In an upcoming effort to become more mobile I have stopped gaming on the soon to be sold Wii, PS3 and widescreen tv and have started playing my Vita and laptop computer more. These will be the gaming machines of my future.

My gaming time has not decreased even though I have ride myself of nearly 200 games. I am still left with an ample amount of choice to begin each gaming session with.

Final Fantasy IV is also getting a lot of love this weekend, via the PSP remake which I am playing on the Vita.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong when I have the time. I usually have some time in the mornings between when I wake up and work out, so that will be the Geek and Shadowrun time! Really loving this installment in Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun series. I thought it couldn't get better after Shadowrun: Dragonfall – Director's Cut; I might have been wrong. I'm finding all of the characters really interesting. There's also so much more dialogue - I can talk to so many non party-member NPCs and just learn a lot about them, not associated with quests. It's the best!

I'll also be getting smacked around by the computer more in Grey Goo. It's for upcoming review on a games website I work for. It's a really impressive game, but so far I'm just terrible at it. I need more practice!

Still in the grip of madness.

My characters are all at or moving toward level 190, so soon I should be able to realize my goals of unlocking the best character class, Maijin, and clearing the Cave of Ordeal, which means going head to head with a level 1000 (yes, one thousand) Zombie King. The level is a little deceptive, though, as he "only" has around 115k HP. For comparison, I recently fought a rank-9 Item God, who was level 244, but who had 145k HP and pretty good stats all around due to being a Divine Maijin. I won't know for sure until I fight him, but I think the risk with the Zombie King is that he hits hard enough to likely one-shot (or close) several of my characters. However, I think I should be able to have my speed so high on my Ninja that he evades any attacks. Looking forward to that fight.

This morning I defeated my first Item God, so there's one post-game goal to cross off the list.

I'm not sure just how much more time I'm going to sink into Disgaea. Being able to unlock an ultimate piece of gear (like the Hyperdrive) seems a long way off, even though I have the pre-req gear in that instance. Clearing out the first Item King in a rank 25 item is a good challenge for my party right now... can't even imagine how ludicrous it would be to defeat the Item God at that rank, let alone at rank 39.

I do want to counter-invade the Human World. Feeling a bit annoyed at how steep the senator penalties are - I could force persuade but I've built up so much goodwill it seems a shame to do so.

For a while I've felt like character levels are relatively unimportant. They go up while you pursue better gear and specialists, but it's those things that have an outsize influence on your overall power. After I hit final character classes, I told myself I wouldn't consider any transmigrations until at least level 250... unless I discover otherwise by digging around online, it seems like any further character-resets are of marginal value unless you go way, way up in level.

Thing I'm most excited about is finding a rarity-2 sword of some kind (I'd take an axe, but a sword would be better). For that rarity grade, I've assembled an Accelerator, Celestial Armor, and Holy Orb. Just itching to get my hands on a weapon to pair with all of that.

6. Video Game: Clicker Heroes [Average Rating:4.88 Overall Rank:7630]
Video Game: Clicker Heroes
I have a hate-hate relationship with this game, meaning I hate the game itself and I hate myself when I play it. I had a highly successful months-long break from this monstrosity until, like an alcoholic falling off the wagon, I decided to give the most recent updates a little nip (clans and relics) and found myself completely sucked back in. (Thanks, frumpish, for telling me the game had been updated.)

I am still ashamed to load this up every single time - indeed, it is in a background tab of my Chrome browser right this moment - but even I can recognize the devious ways in which this ridiculously stupid incremental game tickles the pleasure nodules of my brain just enough to insist that I play for just one more ascension...promise.

Suffice to say that, despite a hard reset near the very end of my last hard-core addiction (during which reliving the early grind in part persuaded me to go on hiatus), I am now back to the point in my progression where I have moved all of my gilds onto Masked Samurai and am pretty close to being able to idle up to level 1000 with ease. If my memories of my last play-through are correct, I am not too far from being able to move my gilds again to one of the rangers to continue progressing ad infinitum.

The new features that incentivized me to return are just okay so far. Relics are pretty neat (particularly when they increase the chances of primal bosses), but I haven't leveled Iris enough to maximize my chances of obtaining high-level relics. And clans seem like they would be cool, but I initially joined a clan that was stuck on a level 32 immortal so got nothing out of it, and am now in a newbie clan that gives paltry awards, so I'm not seeing any great benefit there either.

No doubt this means that I should stop playing. I'll let you know how that goes.

Stoked they delivered dual Mad Maxes today, on a Sunday surprisingly!

Just started the game, gonna watch the movie tomorrow. Really like the idea of building up your car, like your ship in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Max isn't entirely a loner in this. He's got a mechanic, Chum!

This isn't the Chum in the game, but I pretend it is. laugh

The fighting is Batman: Arkham style, which is fine by me. Feels good whumping goons in the face. The desolate Australia outback feels lonely, and searching for meager water supplies, car parts, and gas tanks reminds me a bit of Fallout.

My first goal is to get spiked rims on my wheels, so then I can go Ben Hur on the wasteland.

I finished my first playthrough of Massive Chalice.

Actually, this was my second game. My first I stopped after about an hour, when I had only three heroes left. Evidently I started out wrong.

The second game I played until the end. I played on Normal mode, which is the easiest of the three modes. And already I think this game is brutally hard.

The game plays over a period of 300 years, during which you have to fend off many assaults. There aren't that many different enemies, only six types, and each of those exists only in two difficulty levels. They all use different tactics, though, and have different special abilities.

Until year 150, you only meet the easy enemy levels, and the game seems well doable. But after the halfway point, the harder enemies come into play, and they are definitely a LOT harder. They have double or triple the hitpoints, and have many more special abilities. In the meantime, your heroes have not become that much better, and you'll see them being killed off quickly.

After year 200, the game levels up another notch, when you get the hardest of the harder enemies in almost all the battles, have them surround you from the very start, and have double or triple the numbers in each area. It's save/reload time!

To have a chance at winning, you will have to focus on relics, i.e., weapons that your best heroes leave to their heirs. The problem is that as a new player, you do not realize that only the most basic weapons may become relics; and since you can research upgraded versions of the basic weapons, as a new player you tend to have your heroes fighting with slightly better weapons than the standard, not getting relics at all. And once you realize what is happening here (by searching the Internet), you are already too late, as you need about the whole game to level up a relic to its maximum levels.

So here is how I think you should approach this game: Early on, focus on getting bloodlines started. Weapon research is useless, let all heroes fight with basic weapons only, and try to give the kills to one of the heroes until he or she gets a nickname -- then they will leave their weapon to their children upon death.

You need to build at least three keeps, one keep for each of the basic classes. Each keep is a bloodline, and you should make sure that your relics remain within a bloodline. It is useless to have a relic on a hero who does not give his or her name to a descendant, because then the relic is lost. So a hero with a nickname, if he or she is not part of a bloodline, should get their own keep. It is also fairly useless to have a relic on a hero who is not fighting, because you need to level up relics in fights.

You need to recruit new heroes regularly, until you have a roster of about 20 of them. You also need to build a Sagewright and a Crucible. Sagewrights speed up your research (but you need heroes to man them, and note that these heroes lose their bloodline) and Crucibles make your heroes better. At about the halfway point of the game, you should have six keeps (two for each of the basic classes), two sagewrights, and two crucibles. You have just enough room for that...

...Just enough room, that is, if you do not lose any land. Which you probably will, as the game seems out to put you into situations where you will definitely lose something. It does this by confronting you with three attacks, only one of which you can defend against, or even through "events" which randomly do something slightly good or awfully bad to you. 50-50 odds.

There is an iron mode to this game (you cannot save, and the game saves automatically after each action), but I don't think that will be much fun. The game is a lot like XCOM in its design, but in XCOM ironman mode, you can do pretty well if you play carefully. Nothing like that in Massive Chalice: you get about 20 random events during the game where you have to make a choice, and that choice may turn into something good or bad, but that's just the roll of a die. There is no way that you can influence the outcome. And that's just stupid, especially since many of these events have a HUGE effect on the game.

I bet some people will play this game on Brutal Iron mode, just to get the achievement, but I think that will be an exercise in frustration. As it is, the game certainly has its fun sides (I will probably do one more playthrough at some point), but overall the design is just a bit off. I think it needed one more overhaul to make it good, but probably the Kickstarter funds ran out and the game was considered finished.

Oh, and why the hell do you not get the ability to create your own family, create your own banner, name your own descendants, and give your own name to relics? In a game like this, a little bit of personalization goes a long way to get the player involved. It would be such a small change. But yeah, this is typical for Double Fine's attitude to Kickstarter: once the money is there, you have fulfilled your obligations by releasing a game, no matter the state it is in. A couple more weeks of tweaking in response to player reports could have turned a reasonably entertaining but quite flawed game into a good one. But Double Fine does not seem to have any interest in that.

Trying to get through this.

This wasn't in the database, so I guess I'm the first on BGG playing this (?) Anyway, it's a horror puzzle adventure game. Movement itself is not point and click, but the rest is: Walk around in house, look at stuff, pick up the occasional item, try to advance in the narrative. Keep lighting matches, because they're your only light source until you find a light switch in the room (though their lights don't provide more than small oases of respite). Avoid ghosts. Try to pray the match doesn't go out at the wrong moment.

Up so far, it's very entertaining, with a few annoying aspects. I like the stark black and white graphics, and the atmosphere is nice. The horror works. If you die, you actually reset to the most recent save, and you can only save in the armchairs. There are armchairs a bit here and there in the house, so that's not a big limitation, but the game doesn't exactly invite you to go and save every minute, so getting caught by a ghost does actually imply a penalty. The puzzles are not so much puzzles themselves, the real puzzle is to find what you can find, since your field of vision is so limited.

I'll post a little review once I've got my act together.

(Strange note: When I entered this game, typing in "White Night" in the input box, and the databse couldn't find it. When I typed in the game ID, the system found the game. Has anything to do with that it was just recently approved? Anyway, I'll upload some images soon)

Continuing the long gun fight that is Uncharted 2. At the monastery.

It seems to me that the scenery is just there as a backdrop for the gun fighting in Uncharted 2, compared with Tomb Raider Trilogy games where Lara would be telling you about the history and myths associated with the temples etc she was looting. In Uncharted 2 they didn't even tell me the name of the

I'm still getting started with this. Weird feeling, I've played now for about 14 hours, and I feel like the story haven't really gotten going yet. Probably because I've mainly focused on side missions, but still. It's weird for being a Metal Gear game. So far it feels less Metal Gear Solid and more Metal Gear Skyrim.

Been revisiting the original city I created when I first got the game at launch. Money is rolling in steadily, and I'm over 105,000 population. Trying to solve a number of challenges with this city. Namely, why certain industrial areas can't thrive, as well as a few areas of heavy traffic congestion.

Love this game. It's a peaceful change of pace from the intense FPS games I typically play, and great as a filler when there's not too much time to invest in gaming.

After a long hiatus I've been getting back into this amazing game. Been playing a lot of Frontier Defense to get my skills back up and reacclimate myself to the game.

Very close to reaching Gen 5. I'm at level 48 and only need some pilot kills with the DMR and auto pistol. These guns aren't suitable to my run and gun playstyle, so it's really been challenging trying to shift my tactics to get kills with them. Been relying on cloak a lot for a change.

Titanfall is a game that's very satisfying to play. You feel like such a badass in it.

Pretty much all I've been playing lately.

The way other players can seamlessly integrate their play into your story, your adventures, your areas, is just magnificent. Makes the main problem with MMOs pretty much a non-issue.

So you're sitting there, hanging out in a town. Safe, right? Wrong! All of a sudden, a group of centaurs attacks it. Not just any group, of course, but a couple champions and a huge army and some reinforcements, just for good measure. Holy crap. We got slaughtered, it was amazing. They took the town. Then we had to kick them out in a separate event, which we succeeded, because there weren't such big enemies and the army was smaller. But wow, it was just amazing playing in such a huge group. The problem being that I didn't make any friends out of it. I haven't made any friends in the game that I didn't already have. And so that's the great brilliance and the great tragedy of this game all in one event.

When I saw this on a recent bundle I bought it instantly. I'd have bought the game itself if I'd known it was out as I really enjoyed the original.

This is more of the same, clicking things to collect them to enable you to click other things and collect them. Nice and relaxing.

There is also a storyline about ghosts, pirates, kidnapped sisters. But that is secondary to clicking and collecting. Actually that's how I get my groceries these days too.

More Road Warrior action with my new favorite game. I finally unlocked a leather jacket, so I look the part now. I'm having a blast with this one. I even watch Fury Road on the big screen just to supplement my gaming experience. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's right up my alley. It might not be the deepest story, but the game is just plain fun to play.

Heists with Rudy, Jonna, Jay, Andy, Amy, Adam, and Brian on Monday. I got away with some decent sniping. There was a good run through the Golden Grin, Big Bank, and Cash Bank Heist, mixed in with some more difficult attempts at White Xmas, Cook-Off, and Watchdogs.

I finished off my game of Civ BE and stomped the last remaining enemy into the ground easily. I could have dragged it out, but I knew I had won a long time ago so I didn't see the point in making it last any longer.

My nephew went to Pax a few weeks ago and got me some Steam codes for new games. I got the big TellTale collection and installed about 10 of the 30+ games that came with the pack. I started played Game of Thrones - Episode 1: Iron from Ice. Its pretty good. I can't say that I am a huge fan of these type of games as I like more freedom to do what I want than watching an interactive movie. That being said, its free and I am a Game of Thrones fan so I played it about half an hour or so. Preliminary score of 7/10. The story is interesting but you have to do the exact move at the exact time to win fights or get past certain points, while interesting it provides no freedom or creative thinking, you may as well just be a robot following the commands.

Labor Day was 'work on GW2 day'. ...There's been a number of those recently.

Smudge is contemplating us reserving GW2 largely to the weekends, and doing Neverwinter during the week, as we can easily go in and get things done in my limited weekday time, and GW2 has a lot of 'just one more thing'.

Any rate, Farmishi and Shrimpette finished off Queensgrove Sunday night, including doing a small jump puzzle on the map. That one's fairly easy to get through. The tricky parts are that there's three paths (all with a reward), but only one gives the achievement, and they swarm you with monsters at the end. Bring a friend.

We also went through part of act two of Farmishi's storyline.

Smudge had to stay up and help her husband, who was having trouble (food poisoning, and muscle spasms). While she was waiting to see if she was needed again, she finished off the big jump puzzle in Metrica, thinking 'its good I'll be able to explain this to Rindis before going in.'

So I spent a couple hours working it out for myself before she got up the next morning. For those interested:

This starts in a cave in the cliff wall south of Cuatl Waypoint. Part one is in two sections. One in the cave up to an overlook, the other is floating stepping stones over to a gate, and there's a chest (openable daily) right there. If you like random loot chests, it might be worth doing just that part....

Step through the gate. Look at the map: you can't see this elsewhere. Also note that generally while on that map, falling does not kill you, you just reset to outside the first gate. Part two has a fairly obvious path forward, with three places in a row where you run across vines while winds try to blow you off. That's about as far as we got Friday. I went through all of parts one and two on my first try smoothly (this is shocking for me) until missing the final jump to another gate.

A few tries later, I made it, went through the gate... and ended up at the first gate with an 'attunement error'.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
A little before the first vine is a less obvious path down. This ends at another gate with an 'attunement device' in front of it. This applies a 20 minute buff... The gate goes to a spot a bit above the first vine. This is Windy Station.

Getting through the gate again, I figured I was done....

Spoiler (click to reveal)
But I was at part 3: Stormy Station. A series of islands that were constantly getting struck by lightning went off towards a floating tree. Thankfully, I noted that I was no longer attuned, and there was a couple paths.... Going to the lightning elemental got me to a gate with another attunement device. The other direction has a series of roots to jump between; the middle one gets hit with winds (this not immediately obvious). I actually made it through all this the first three times to a set of chevron stairs. And then I spent most of an hour struggling with that part. Smudge never did manage the roots, and found a shortcut around them. I kept missing the final jump to the gate platform, and eventually found you just need to follow the inside curve of the stairs the entire way.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Part 4: Chilly Station. This was relatively easy, but the periodic slow buff from all the cold needs respect. Took maybe half-a-dozen tries, mostly from being slowed at the wrong time when I pushed for two jumps between slowing. By this point, a couple other guilds were working members through the puzzle, and that helped me spot the attunement path.

Part 5: I nearly cursed when I saw a stepping stone path. But I made it the first time, and arrived at a large building. There were a pair of people from one of the other guilds there. They spotted me, jumped around, and took off for the boss! Goemm the Mad is fairly tough; I'm glad I had help. I forget what I got from the final chest; it was fairly nice, but I wanted the achievement.

I also started up cooking on my Charr. Tip: don't start until you have a bunch of materials gathered, and you have empty bags. Then buy everything you can from the cooking vendor. There's a bewildering variety of things to discover, some of which are still just ingredients. Many of the finished items (buff food), are also ingredients, so you need to keep a bunch of things on you for discovery (or... look it up online, if you want to be boring). Also, there are expensive recipes that show up automatically that can give you random dyes. If you want re-coloring options, cooking can help.

Spent time with Jythier last night, including testing out a three way call on Skype, which worked fairly well. Good to have a voice to go with the bill.

Started with this.

It's a bit strange, because while I normally don't play online and am not interested at all in competing with others, two games where I actually feel that it would be fun to at least try popped up in the same week (at least to my radar): This and Splatoon.

For those that don't know, this is a weird football/soccer game where you drive cars that should push and knock the ball into the opponent's goal. The cars can do small jumps, boosts and variot tricks, but there are no weapons. Just whack the ball into the goal.

I am a hopeless newbie at this point, but I've at least gone through the tutorials, played a few matches and started to play local seasons against AIs. It's ridiculously satisfying to get a good knock into a goal. Also, the online matches are cross-platform (PC/PS4), so I can actually play with a pal who has it on PC.

Went up against my first convoy today.
Not quite this big...just 4 roadsters and a tow-truck with a big red fuel tank.

External image

My harpoon is super powerful, ripping off doors and their drivers right out. Also now I can rip off tires too, which makes the cars docile in the sand.

External image

The first convoy I hijacked the gas truck, after I ripped the driver out of the door with the harpoon. I drove the gas truck all the way back to the stronghold....only to find I can't store that type of vehicle. So I lost my gas truck. yuk

Back on the road again to find another convoy, this time I tore everyones' wheels off and shot the gas truck with my shotgun. devil

External image

With the gas truck KABOOOMED, I got a new hood ornament, which bolstered some of my car's abilities.

One area is now cleared and Max is starting to feel like one--

Have been playing GW2 since I created a character this past Friday. I found very amusing one of the races physically resembled Stitch (my avatar), so tried to make my character similar to him. Couldn't name him Stitch, as it was already taken, so went for the name of the Hawaiian island he crash lands on: Kaua'i. Which, because of other limitations, ended up being Kaua I. I'm level 22 so far, and I've completed the first part of the story quest, as well as both Asura and Sylvari starting areas.

MMORPGs are games that I usually like in theory, but very rarely I like in practice, as the moment grinding is required I get bored. Indeed, the only one I've played for months, and not only for a couple weeks, is Space Cowboy/Air Rivals. While this is no longer the case, in its early days, while levelling up was relatively slow, the game had a very strong faction-based PvP component, and you stood a chance in battles the moment you reached level 40. Someone with more levels and better equipment would have an edge over you, but you could reasonably 1v1 them.

With every other game, it's always the same: I have fun until I have to spend hours, stuck in the same area, for a meagre level. In order to compensate this, the month I played World of Warcraft I spent my time creating five or six different characters, exploring the initial areas.

Now, Guild Wars 2: it doesn't feel grindy! You still need to acquire levels, but has a very strong component of exploration, and you don't need to stick to an area in order to progress. And, for what I've seen, you can earn a reasonable amount of experience when completing quests from *any* area, regardless of your level. This is achieved through level caps: there's a maximum level for each area and, if your level is higher than that, it'll temporarily become that level. So if, for instance, you go to the area where new players spawn you are level 50, your level will be 3 while you are there.

I haven't tried PvP yet, but even if I've only spent a few hours in the game so far, it has the strongest PvE of any MMORPG I've played. And this is solely due to the dynamicity it gets from its strong exploration component, as you don't feel constrained by the environment. But then again, I love exploring and dislike grinding immensely.

And last but not least, yesterday I played a couple hours or so with:
