After a long hiatus I've gone back to GTAV to kill time. Already have the story at 100% completion, and while I'd love to play online my Xbox Live subscription has expired. So I've been playing in the sandbox, seeking out some of my favorite cards to pimp out and cruise throughout the world while listening to the great soundtrack, appreciating the scenery, and generally getting into trouble every chance I get.

Getting excited for the After Dark update this Thursday. Continuing the playthrough of my first and only city which is now up to 130,000 citizens. I've recently unlocked the Eden Project monument, which has bolstered land value in the South Western island. Only have 2 more unique buildings to unlock, but they require me to bankrupt my city or increase crime which seems too difficult to do at this point.

The receiver of my current affections, I've been running laps at Watkins Glen Short in the Caper Monterey Stock Car, and also I managed my first race win in the invitation Pan Euro GT5 Historic challenge, where we drive BMWs. Definitely race car BMWs. I got the 6 'useless' points last time but apparently it is a championship of sorts with several rounds. I'm now on the third round, which takes place in Italy on some track, the name of which I cannot remember. Imola, maybe? Anyway, it's a long track with 17 corners and nice long straights. I can't get the hang of it, and qualifying is in the rain - I simmed through practice by mistake and can't go back, so I'm stuck with qualifying. I'm currently at the very back of the pack but within a second of the last car. I like to be at least in the middle for races with qualifying, not so that I'm in the middle so much as so that I know I'm capable of running a decent lap.

Monday night I tried a few solo stealth heists and failed miserably.. then I hooked up with Jan and we played a couple of loud heists on Hard difficulty to help him towards his difficulty mask achievement. Aless heist and Firestarter Pro... both pretty easy for us at this difficulty, with our current skill levels.

Wednesday I played some more Payday 2 with Amy, Jonna and Rudy. We did a White Xmas overkill and made it out with 26 bags. Then we attempted Hoxton Breakout Deathwish... we actually managed to get through Day 1 after a couple of restarts (to avoid the armoured truck!), and after a couple of restarts on day 2, we got right through to taking the server, but we somewhat foolishly detoured into the evidence room to heal up and never managed to get out of there.. We called it quits there, but we all felt we'd be able to do it again.

I recently started playing this again and so far I've completed the first episode and done the first mission of the second episode.

I am finding the controls very frustrating on the PC (a combination of 8 keys), and I am dying a lot from falling into the abyss because of the perspective. I'm hoping the arrival of my steam controller in October will assist in playing this type of game.

I really enjoyed the batmobile level in episode 1, though.. that really rocked.

[I also recently bought Lego Marvel heroes, in a Steam sale.]

My eldest (5) is playing this and really enjoying it, but he doesn't always have the patience to collect enough studs to unlock the characters he wants... That's where Dad comes in. He currently needs to earn 800,000 studs to unlock General Grievous (to be fair he has unlocked a lot of them himself, like Yoda, Darth Vader etc... I did previously help him earn enough to unlock Darth Maul though).

As part of that task, I've also been playing through the game myself... mostly on Free Play, after he's completed the story. I've done Episodes I and II, and am working my way through Episode III. Finding the Red Bricks and minikits is proving to be difficult though.. I think I've only managed 1 complete minikit from episode II... but have a couple of other levels with 8 or 9 of 10 parts found.

This could turn out to be my only non-PC game that I complete in 2015 (assuming I manage it!)

I've been playing the Brits this week and so far they are very good on offense with great static emplacements, but their tanks get rolled by the Germans consistently. I had the unfortunate experience of several of my Cromwells and even a Churchill against a King Tiger and a Panther... It wasn't much of a fight actually as both of my tanks were piles of slag in a few moments. My infantry with Piat AT weapons lasted much longer - before they got mowed down. So, my battles using the Brits take 2 or 3 times longer as I have to inch my way across the map, taking and holding each area as I go, slowly strangling my enemies and taking away all their oil resources so I don't get squashed by their tanks. Its a totally different way of playing than I am used to and though I am learning to be better at it, it's not my natural style of mobility and encirclement and attacking from behind enemy lines like I can do with the Wehrmarcht and US Forces easily. The Russian army is woefully underpowered in this game IMHO when you compare it to late war historical records. They make the T-34 a piece of junk when it was actually a killing machine.

Will sit and play with my PS4 this week as well, and the game will mostly be Witcher 3. I continued last week, playing the main quest. And I did a boss fight, with the Wild Hunt warrior, Nithral. That was in the end of Wandering in the Dark mission, the best part of the main quest so far. Hope the rest is as good. See if I can conclude Act I this week. Working on it.

I made it to Chapter 3, which, according to Dandelion's bardic record keeping, is the last act of the story (other than, presumably, an epilogue).

The story is still much better than in the first game, and that was the original's major strength. Hopefully I will soon be able to save up enough cash for a new suit of armor, as the one I'm using now has lasted its fair share of about 10 of the 28 levels I've advanced through so far. Naturally, as soon as I bought a new steel sword at Loc Muinne, I began another quest that involves killing monsters (using the other sword) in the sewers. This quest involves working with people who I'm almost certain will make me regret my cooperation, two of which I turned down a similarly vague offer of employment in Flotsam early in the game.

----

Update on Sunday: I completed the game. The last battle was intense, but even more so was
Spoiler (click to reveal)
the staredown with Letho in the Epilogue. I decided not to fight him. His plot had already been shut down, and there is an odd attitude of brotherhood in him answering everything I asked and leaving it up to me if we would battle.

Played the T2 table for the first time on Pinball Arcade (PS4) this week. Had some trouble getting this board, even though I kickstarted it, like I've been writen about here: https://videogamegeek.com/thread/1394760/kickstarter-fail-di...

But now I bought the second season, including T2. It's is a really good table. Together with Medieval madness my favorite tables of all time. Will see how may goals I will complete during my first week playing it.

About 4 hours into Front Mission 3. Been playing a little bit at a time, but so far really enjoying it.

This is one of the few late-era PSX games (another would be Metal Gear Solid) that showcases a confidence in the hardware and achieves a sense of style that holds up pretty well. I feel bad for overlooking this title for as long as I did. A friend of mine had it when it was new, but I wasn't much into videogames at that moment in time, and to the extent I that I was, I was a PC gamer.

I wonder what I would have thought of this back then, as I did play a fair amount of Battle Tech, a table-top RPG / hex-based tactical game with giant mechs.

I've completed ten or so battles, essentially finishing the game's prologue. The main characters are established along with their predicament / some kind of military conspiracy. I've been through tutorials for the management layers of the game (mech customization, loadouts), but haven't begun making meaningful upgrade decisions. So far I've completed battles with just the three main characters. I assume I'll get a squad of at least four or five as the game gets going.

So far, I like the layer of randomness/variation that stems from each mech having HP for four different areas. You never quite know how quickly you will disable an enemy mech, or whether you will destroy it outright, cripple it, or just knock out its weapons. I've captured a few disabled mechs and I assume that will turn into a significant part of the game as well.

Range/movement/action points feels a bit more meaningful here than in something like Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Not to knock Disgaea (I had a blast with it), but Front Mission may be a bit more serious when it comes to the tactics.

Back after a long hiatus.

Took a little bit of time to reacquaint myself with all of my rare/legendary weapons but after 30 minutes or so I felt smoothly in control. We seem to be at a point where we've found powerful gear and are just playing it out for a while. For the last three or so hours of play I haven't seen any new gun etc that warranted more than a glance. That's not such a bad thing, though, as I have a great sense of my character and her distinctive arsenal (I have an amazing incendiary SMG with a scope, a fantastic acid-based revolver for point blank encounters, an explosive sniper rifle for certain situations, and a decent legendary shotgun just for the heck of it).

I connected with Todd and his wife to take down Krom. Pretty funny encounter. We didn't know that the turret was manned by Krom himself. Todd took off probably 80% of his HP by sniping in the time it took me to re-equip my own sniper rifle, and then he was toast. I don't think we'd aggroed any of his minions at that point.

The most memorable part of hour recent session came in the form of an unexpected guest. Todd forgot to make the session invitation-only, and we were joined by level 69 soldier with hacked equipment. He ran around killing everything for us for about 20 minutes, dumped a bunch of 10-million-credit rifles on the ground, and bailed.

laugh

We're most of the way done with all the Rust Commons / New Haven stuff. Looking forward to the final stretches of the game.

This might be more appropriate to post to the "ambivalently continued" list.

I've played maybe three hours of this. I liked it a lot at first, but the trait system has become a real nuisance and I don't feel inclined to grind out a win on the next boss, let alone all three remaining story bosses plus the final.

Progress feels too slow. Despite the procedural nature of the castle, it feels too repetitive. The controls feel generally tight enough for long-term exploration / combat against minions, but that's largely due to things like Vampirism that forgive mistakes. With bosses it just feels like I can't achieve consistent evasion, which just leads you back to the grind for raw power.

I really don't like the fact that the trait system gives you a "good" runner every other play or so, and often has you sifting through clearly bad or annoying runners.

I watched a speedrun of this game in which it is completed, start to finish, in 14 minutes. I know it would take me 5-10 more hours. I'm not sure I'm actually missing anything if I bail now.

Picked this game up largely on a whim, have been playing the browsergame "Fallen London" intermittently for over a year now and never fail to be charmed by it's cheerfully dark writing and mysterious writing and flavorful world. So I forked over some dosh, became a Zee-Captain and set my little steamer into the dark of the Unterzee.

Now, two drowned captains later, I have learned much about the world under the earth, about the darkness, lit only by shining of false, stone stars and memories of the sunlight, preyed upon by bound sharks and unfinished man-pirates. I have seen the sights of Frostbound, visited the place where Irem lies, lay, will lay, always lies...And though I expect to die again, I have thoroughly enjoyed the dark atmosphere of the game, the rather relaxing nature of the sea-travel and the good music.

I'll probably write a review about this game later...And maybe see if I can convert it into a roleplaying setting.

With this normal game you can still select the size and shape of the galaxy as well as your race and form of government, But nothing else. I just went with whatever was preselected by the game. So I'm playing some strange race called Human (Military Dictatorship) in a small varied cluster of 250 stars.

I'm having the computer suggest stuff depending on the characters I have. So Ambassadors suggest diplomatic stuff, Intelligence Agents suggests spy missions, Etc. Going to try a semi-automatic approach to research. So the computer will pick my research according to what area the scientists' specialty is. I'll choose the rest until I have Scientists in all fields I guess. Even though I like designing ships, I'm letting the computer handle ships designs this time out. So we'll see how that goes.

Not quite thru the first year yet and I have a potentially hostile species on my “Northern border” and an independent colony of another on the opposite “border”. Looks like I'll be getting to take my first military action against someone other than space pirates real soon.

A bit more of this silly game with tatoolo. Grinding a few dumb missions for materials, as on the actual mission we're currently on, I seem to lose all of our lives before Kevin can kill the boss.

I'm helping!

Getting back into this, and getting into the evil mindset... on a planet with political strife, my instinct is to side with not the asshole. But I'm aiming towards Sith, and so I become convinced to depose a few good people, maybe a little indiscriminate murdering, &c. Finally acquired the last member of my party, so now it's off to a new planet and time to lament my equipment. I'll say this though -- the main reason to be a Sith is that their force powers are much more fun.

EDIT: Although now whenever I try to fly back to Telos, the game crashes and I cannot input any commands/movement. This is currently only at the level of incredibly frustrating, as there are still other planets I can go to next instead. But I worry that it may turn out to be a game-halting bug, which would be super-extra-double-frustrating.

Back to Road Warrior, after taking a week off for JoshCon 2015.

Still digging the game after some 25 hours.
Some enemies are starting to get pretty nasty though.

I really need the armor upgrade badly. The Magnum Opus is getting pretty torn apart by the groups I've been running into lately.

Currently I have up-pointing exhaust pipes, which give more power, but I miss the old ones that spat fire and oil on the ground. I am considering downgrading, just for the visual joy of napalm on the asphalt.

I will probably be playing this to and fro for the coming year, so I don't know if it's sensible to post this every single week. This is a game I'll never learn to my content, and it's frustratingly difficult, but the euphoria when I manage to know the ball into the goal is big enough for me to go on.

Last week I made my first aerial goal (and about the 20th time I even hit the ball at all during an aerial), and yesterday I managed to score a goal with 1 second left, turning a 3–4 loss into a tie. Only pity is that the bot team (opposing) won just 15 seconds into overtime.

I'm about 12-13 hours into this game on my PS3. It's ok, but honestly it hasn't seized me. Not sure why. There does seem to be a LOT of walking around or traveling through space or riding on the Mako, all of which is pretty dull. And I'm not really feeling the progression in my characters, even as they advance to level 25 or so.

I will certainly finish this and complete as much as I can (except for the random mining and artifact missions). And I'll almost certainly finish the trilogy too. But I'm a little disappointed so far.

I noticed that they made some Steam cards, So I figured I would play a bit and get the card drops. Some new levels were also added and they seemed to be more on the easier/casual side. Which is good as that matches my interest level. The few hours I spent with it were enjoyable enough.

With my week off between jobs, I thought I might do more multiplayer gaming or spending time with friends, but NOPE, I've been binge-playing FFXII and Shadowrun. I'm playing FFXII's International version where you choose classes for each person; I find magic-oriented characters quite fiddly, so I have a mostly physical set of classes, though I took all the options that have a bit of magic (Machinist, Knight, Monk, Uhlan). In retrospect, having one person as a Red Mage might have been nice since they get a lot of the basic utility spells. Unfortunately I will have to wait until I can unlock espers to get most of the magic spells I can use.

So far the game is quite a bit easier; I remember getting killed by Garuda (the flying monster just outside the Tomb of Raithwall) the last time I played and tore through him in seconds this time around. I think it's mostly because I knew what to expect and went in packing the most powerful ranged weapons I could buy.

The license grids in this version are pretty bizarre; pretty well all of the licenses of a particular type are clumped together in each grid, so nearly all of my characters have massive HP pools.
