Sometimes you're stuck waiting somewhere with just your phone and some free time. It makes sense that most games made for phones seem to be simple time wasters, but some games on phones are actually quite good. Good enough that they rise above the status of "time waster". That they can still be played in short bursts on the go is a plus.

In celebration of VVG's "Mobile Game's Event", here are some of my favorite mobile games (specifically for phones).

I find Terry Cavanagh's games to be so delightfully charming, from the adrenaline-pumping yet simple gameplay to the amazing music. (see also VVVVVV) I actually prefer twitch-reflex type games like this on my phone rather than with a keyboard or controller on the PC. I'm not sure why. This game is super addictive and feels so satisfying to beat the 60 second mark on the levels (I'm still working on Hexagonest, though).

Great for short bursts!

Part restaurant management, part twitch action, this game turned out to be very engaging and addictive. All the extra little weird tasks and stuff that happens, like the Iron Chef TV show and girlfriends who only like you for the free food, keep it fresh. The only thing I wish were different is that the 20 day requirement for each upgrade was gone. My game glitched and counted the days wrong for my first two starts, totally negating the 20 day requirement, which was nice. Super fun game, overall, one of my favorite games ever on Android. What a great port; works great as a mobile game. The touchscreen controls/gestures are very well done.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition is really nice. The annoying "look recepies up on a wiki" method of crafting is replaced with a crafting menu where you just select what you want to craft and tap it to completion. Up to 10 people can play together on a local server on different Android devices, and it's easy enough to set up that my 5 year old son figured it out on his own. thumbsup

Probably my favorite JRPG ever. Great music, great characters, even if a bit cliche, great premise and varied worlds. JRPG combat that actually isn't annoying! It's just so cool! So memorable! So... awesome!

Classic turn based RPGs like these are great on phones because the sloppy interface doesn't slow you down. Whether you emulate it, or use the app they made of it on iOS, it's great.

Duet is an arcade action type minimalistic game where you can rotate one way or the other to get past obstacles. It's reminiscent of Super Hexagon, but different; it's broken up into many manageable levels instead of having just a few really hard levels. The music is good, and whenever you hit an obstacle, you splat against it like paint and restart the level. By the end of a difficult level, many obstacles will be spattered with paint splats. It is pretty addictive and enjoyable.

This is a text-based choose-your-own-adventure style work of interactive fiction, but it is much more complex and keeps track of much more variables and different choices/outcomes than any book could hope to. I found it very impressive. There are other IF games like it, but I've found this one to be the best, by far. Good replayability, too.

Fruit Ninja has evolved a lot since it first came out. Now, there are experience levels and mini missions and stuff (similar to those in Jetpack Joyride). Also, all the blades and dojo backgrounds have a unique special ability or power, which is a really nice addition. Fun game, perfect kind of game for touchscreens.

Chess and other board games are great games for phones that you can play a handful of turns and then pick it up later to finish a game. Chess is my favorite, but there are also apps for games like Backgammon and Stratego that have good tutorials, which I find an easier way to learn than just reading the rules.

The only game I've really enjoyed on the phone, is this beautiful but relatively simple puzzler.
