ABOUT GCL Microbadge: GameChat League - Gelato Division: "Discover your favorite flavour!" GELATO DIVISION Microbadge: GameChat League - Gelato Division: "Discover your favorite flavour!" SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

What is a Geek Chat League?

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

So what do reversals have to do with records? Not much, except that the record keeps on spinning, I suppose. But that's kind of the point of this week's list.

I want to talk about reversals.

What memorable game have you played wherein you were in the lead and ended up losing after a sudden reversal by another player?

What is something, boardgame or otherwise, that you go round and round with. By this I mean, you might love it for a few months, then you can't stand it for a year, then you inevitably come crawling back to it.

A small range of titles this week but some really good ones.

Arcadia Quest is just a ray of sunshine in that HeroQuest bracket, but it fixes most everything that was a let down with HQ (monster strength...scaling etc etc).

Risk Legacy continues to be a blast as we logged battle 8 in the ongoing war. A couple of fun surprises and one huge 'what the &#%#&) moment in this play. Hugely memorable both games this week.

The rest served as holiday fare with my sister and Annie. Good times.

6   Yikerz! x2 - It is always more fun to just play with the magnets than to play this game. Once you throw two of them in the air causing them to rattle together, the kids don't want to do anything else.

8   Knapp daneben x2 - This is the precursor of the Ghost Blitz series. To be honest, I am playing this to increase my H-index. I have been stuck at 44 for a while!

N/A   Hands x2 NEW! - I was happy to finally play this. I saw this a while back and knew I needed to track it down. It borrows from Hands Up and Brouhaha a bit, which is a very good place to draw from. It's a little hard to enforce the rules with kids, but it's still a lot of fun.

8   Crossing - Barring some surprise from Essen, I'm pretty sure this will end up being my game of 2015.

 6   Beasty Bar
 7   Battleship Express
 6   Zitternix
 8   Le Passe-Trappe x4
7   Kuck Ruck Zuck! - I am on a mission to play all of my Roberto Fraga games again!

 7   Katzofant
6   Kalle Kanalratte - I need to revisit my rating here. I did not understand this game at first, but once it clicked it has been a great little bluffing game that the kids love.

7   At Full Throttle - Looks like this has just been rethemed as Me Want Cookies!, which is a fun theme.

 9   Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition

N/A   Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends - Finally redeemed my last performance with a decisive win.

N/A  Starfighter NEW! - This is a weird one. It has some interesting ideas but I would like to try it again. Looks like Ystari has finally given up on their naming convention. This could have been Starfyter. And why is their next game not called Shakespyre?

9   Brass - This is a play of the upcoming iOS/Android app. The AI is TERRIBLE. On the first turn when all three AI players bought cotton mills I knew it would be a pointless exercise. The AI is so bad that one of the players ended up bankrupting on the first or second turn of the rail era. The other players ended up passing their last few turns. I hope there is some improvement here, because the experience was terrible, a waste of time.

9   Promi-Klatsch - After we finished the game, we all agreed that the only game win of the night that mattered was this one. Who cares about winning Goa when you can win Promi-Klatsch?

10   Nertz x2 - I was happy to win my 350th logged play of Nertz!

 8   Goa
 7   Bargain Hunter

Other Stuff
I've been a fan of Tig Notaro ever since her album "Good One". I am not into comedy at all, and I never watch standup comedians. But since the album was released by Secretly Canadian, I took a chance and had a great time listening to it. I like her delivery as well as the fact that it's pretty clean. My sense of humor is pretty stupid, but I loved the "No Moleste" bit, as well as her story about Taylor Dayne. She became massively popular when Louis C.K. tweeted about her show a few years back where she announced that she had cancer. This week I watched all of the 2015 features with her, the HBO special "Boyish Girl Interrupted", the Showtime documentary "Knock Knock, It's Tig Notaro" and the Netflix documentary "Tig".

Netflix is developing a habit of releasing documentaries titled after a famous person's first name. I thought their documentary "Mitt" was great. "Tig" is interesting to watch, mainly because she is such a likable person. I'm not sure why there has been such a desire to make documentaries about her, but they were pleasant to watch. On the BGG rating scale, I would probably put all of these at a 5 or 6. I haven't enjoyed anything of hers that I've seen as much as her initial album, but I'm holding out hope for the future.

This is the week that was:
Board Game: Exploding Kittens
Board Game: Power Grid
Board Game: Twilight Struggle
Board Game: The Last Spike

 N/A   Exploding Kittens x3
 10   Power Grid x2
 10   Twilight Struggle (Chantry)
N/A   The Last Spike x2 NEW!

A good week as I got to play Power Grid twice. The first time was on the Baden map and I came in second, and on Thursday on the Brazil map where I was able to build 7 cities on the final turn to bring my to 15 powered cities for the win and the next closest player only could build 13.

A new game arrived, The Last Spike. I really really liked it. Very good first impression. I do have to agree with the critics though that the board is shite. I'm writing a review... this game is a WINNER!

This past week (through date of posting), these games continued:
Thunder Alley, Cuba Libre, 1989.

This past week, these games concluded:
None.

This past week, these games/accessories were acquired:
Combat Commander: Europe, Combat Commander: Mediterranean, Combat Commander: Pacific, and Combat Commander: Battle Pack #3 – Normandy. I bought them as a bundle to use for my CC:E tournament this November at BottosCon as I know I'll need a set for that purpose above and beyond my own.

This week, these games are on my radar:
None.

This past week, these interesting things happened in my games and my life:

BGG Con: It's a go unless and until I hear otherwise. My schedule is about as full as I'd like to make it for the moment.

BottosCon: This one's on track as well, and it looks like the CC:E tournament I'm planning on is a go. I've received prize support from Rodger MacGowan, and I'm thinking of getting a trophy made.

Game Week

 10   Advanced Squad Leader x2
9   The Napoleonic Wars (Second Edition) NEW!
 8   Love Letter
 10   Eldritch Horror x3

Our weekly game of Advanced Squad Leader was a disaster. We choose a scenario where a couple of British commandos tried to hold up a German breakthru, and boy, they did! I guess I played completely stupid and my Jerries died like flies ... it was over in turn 3. As we had plenty of time left, and we still had one unfinished Stalingrad scenario, we decided to continue that one and we finished it. So two ASL playings this week. The next time we'll try a big one - Stalingrad again. I'm looking forward to that.

Saturday - finally! We had scheduled a game of The Napoleonic Wars, which sits unplayed on my shelf for years. Oh boy, what have I missed!!! A wonderful card-driven game, covering the whole war from 1805 on with only 21 pages of easy rules. Fantastic game. As we played only with four people, Prussia was a proxy; I played Britain. The Battle of Trafalgar went very well and I sunk all those fancy Spanish and French ships, losing only one squadron. While Napoleon overrun the poor Austrians, he also sent a small force down to Italy, where he encountered a few Skirmishes with the Brits. I also openend a front in Spain, but wasn't able to gain much terrain there. When finally the Russian army arrived, an Austro-Prussian-Russian force (with a little support from my Ottoman Empire) was able to drive Nappy back - and when I finally landed British troops in Belgium, the campaign was over. Great game, really great game! Loved every minute of it! Oh, and Austria won. Measly two points in front of my Brits! I'd love to play that one again; it could easily raise from "9" to "10".

Here's an image of that session - guess who played the French!

Board Game: The Napoleonic Wars

As there was still a little time left after that epic wargame, we settled on a game of Love Letter, which was also won by the player who lead Austria to a glorious victory against the French invasion. meeple

On Sunday, Andrea and I revisited Eldritch Horror again. This time we finally wanted to defeat Cthulhu himself. No easy task ... we played three games, and three times, we were defeated. Heck, what do we wrong???

Board Game: Advanced Squad Leader

Hope you all had a great week too! meeple

Board Game: Star Realms
Board Game: Ascending Empires
Board Game: Leaping Lemmings
Board Game: Sushi Go!
Board Game: PitchCar

Star Realms x3
Solitaire with the new Crisis expansions thrown in. Good fun with some new cards.
Ascending Empires NEW!
3-player game with Ingmar and Terje. Fun little game, but the Ramming rule is odd. Took out one of Ingmar's planets in the last turn, but he still anaged to take the win in tie-breaker at 27 points. I was thrid at 24.
Leaping Lemmings
Same group as above. Came in second.
Sushi Go! NEW!
Same group as above. Just a filler. Came in third after getting dreadful cards in the third round.
PitchCar
With kids at school. Alternate shots with teams of two.

Reading

Finished Jan Guillou's Ondskan Sunday after reading a few hours. Well written book on the subject of violence and threats and the phycological battle between enemies. Jan Guillou have never revealed how much of it is true or not. Some scenes in this book are scary and horrible, but it is a great read.
Called Evil in english, but doesn't seem to be widely available. Available in German, I know. Not sure how easy it is to get hold of.

Watching

World cycling championship.
Sagan took a deserved win, but the producers failed to show the sprint for 2nd place because they focused too much on Sagan which had passed the finishline. Norwegian Kristoff came 4th. Very cool race.

Narcos
Continue to watch this on Netflix. Good fun.

Games on my radar

Talon Still very tempting. Combat in space.
Thunder Alley Crew Chief Expansion[/b] In development at NNG. Not sure if GMT will be involved, but more stuff for Thunder Alley must be good. The blogpost linked with the name also mentions me as a proofer for Grand Prix
Star Realms: Colony Wars Probably a must buy. Might just toss the cards in with the regular Star Realms cards to get a little more variety. Or try the new cards against the solo challenges.
Mr. President: The American Presidency, 2001-2020 Sounds like an interesting game. Resource management. But might be a little too long to get much play. Still time to decide.
Red Winter: The Soviet Attack at Tolvajärvi, Finland – 8-12 December 1939 As Ondskan mentioned the war in Finland this one had to be browsed again. Looking really cool.

Life
The cough has improved.

Got up at 4 in the middle of the night to look at the Super Blood Moon. A cool thing to have witnessed. Woke up both kids and showed them. Not sure they actually remember seeing it, but hey, gotta show them when it is next scheduled for 2050 or something around here.

Ultra short report this week.

There was one gamenight that saw:
x1 Hanabi
x3 Codenames
x3 Khmer (six point matches)

Work is in overdrive so games took the backseat. Still, it was nice to have folks over. The gathering was among close friends so it was mostly chatting, but we did play a few games. Codenames is still going strong here. The group loves it. I was happy to teach Hanabi to a new set of gamers. I think I'm getting up there in plays (probably 100+ hands) and it just keeps giving. I still haven't managed a perfect game with five, and we haven't thrown in the rainbow suit yet. I'm so happy they won the SdJ.

Most folks left after dinner, so I ended up just playing a few hands of Khmer, which is also continuing to grow on me. Like Hanabi, the best part of the game is the charming wordless "conversation" that develops over the plays and counter-plays. This one is sticking around.

Let's see...on the non-playing gaming front, I started doing some Essen research and getting my BGG.con schedule lined up. Sadly I still don't know if I'll make brunch. It depends on if I find a car or take a bus. Currently my purchases this year are likely limited to the new Splotter. I'm hoping it will round out the year nicely. Fall is an exciting time for new games. Ships, C&C Marshals, and the Civil War will be on their way at some point. That should keep me busy for awhile. I'm thinking about following Tommy's lead and not purchasing any games 2016. I've only got a couple of unplayed games, but I want to pause purchase so I can go a little deeper into what I've got sitting on my shelf.
