This is a geeklist to discuss the movies you watched throughout the year of 2015. Please feel free to post your own, and discuss freely with others about the movies they enjoyed. You don't have to make a big post, or list a lot of movies like I did. If you just want to share one, that's great!

Also, if you're interested, we have a monthly list that is posted where you can talk about movies as you see them. We have a small but dedicated group who get together every month to chat about what's new to the theaters, and also which old movies we watched. You can find the subscription thread for those lists here: Movies You Watched Subscription Thread

My movie watching is still way down on what it has been in years past, but I did still manage to see a few key releases, and watch a few older movies that I'd missed... I did watch more than 10 movies this year, but I can't pick more than a top 8 it seems...

d10-1 Interstellar
d10-2 The Hobbit : Battle of the Five Armies
d10-3 Star Wars : The Force Awakens *
d10-4 Ant Man *
d10-5 Guardians of the Galaxy
d10-6 Inside Out *
d10-7 X-Men: Days of Future Past
d10-8 Avengers : Age of Ultron *

Not sure I'm completely set on the order.. originally I had put the Hobbit first (hence the geeklist entry), and I don't rightly know about putting Ant-Man ahead of Guardians... but it was a lot of fun.

Entries marked with a * were seen at the cinema.. others were on DVD or bluray

Movies I'd like to see:
Mad Max : Fury Road
The Martian

I'll go with Birdman as my favorite 'new to me' movie I saw in 2015.

Other ones worth a note: What We Do In the Shadows (a New Zealand spoof on vampire movies); Dear White People; The Babadook (a good Australian psychological horror flick), and Going Clear (a documentary about Scientology).

STAY AWAY warnings for: The Rage in Placid Lake (a disappointing Aussie movie); Walkabout (an Australian movie from about 1970 that was pretty terrible); Her (disappointing science fiction featuring horrific high-pants on men).

Wow... and I thought I watched a lot of movies. I managed to see 149 films last year. Some were great and some were horribly terrible. In no particular order...

New To Me - Top 10

1. The Puffy Chair (I now know that I'm a big fan of mumblecore)
2. Gone Girl (a fantastic book too)
3. Friday the 13th IV: The Final Chapter (I watched the whole series)
4. Once (also a wicked broadway show)
5. Project Almanac (I'm a sucker for time travel)
6. Quiet City (another great, raw mumblecore)
7. Before Sunrise (loved the whole trilogy, but this was tops)
8. It Follows (best horror movie I've seen in past 10 years)
9. Like Stars on Earth (not quite as good as 3 Idiots, but I loved it)
10. Predestination (not what I was expecting, but wow, so good)

I started really getting into movies on a deeper level this year than I did before. I've found myself trying to watch a variety of movies and I really prefer the contemporary style over the slower pacing of movies of decades past, likely as a product of my being young and raised on faster-paced media for my entire life. Some of these I will leave some comments with, others I'll simply list, depending on how well I feel I can articulate my appreciation for the movie.

Movies I rated a 4.5/5 on Letterboxd that I saw this year were

Mad Max: Fury Road--I haven't seen the original Mad Max movies but this one stood on its own brilliantly, dropping us in a fascinating world and jumping straight into a whirlwind of action with little exposition, leaving us to discover the world for ourselves while at the same time seeing an empowering story unfold full of interesting characters. Saw it with my friend in 3D in the theater as a fun man-date and watched it again on my laptop after it came out for home consumption and it was incredibly fun both times.

Ant-Man--I can't help it, I'm a sucker for the MCU. Pretty uninspired story but so full of colorful and fun characters, brilliant effects, great action, and one of the better scores to any MCU film to-date.

Kingsman: The Secret Service--I laughed more at this movie than any other I saw this year.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World--I absolutely loved this movie. The characters were wonderful and the sort of surreal and unbelievable tone was humorous and endearing. The dark premise created an absolutely beautiful dissonance with the light-hearted roadtrip style.

In Bruges

Amelie

Three Kings

Nightcrawler

---------------

And three new-to-me movies of 2015 entered my top 10 favorite movies and got 5/5 ratings

Birdman--As a classical musician, I loved how this film articulated the thematic concepts of the differences in high art vs popular art and how artists must find their way in the world. The film is full of deeply interesting characters with phenomenal cinematography and an absolutely brilliant score. While many movies about film, theatre, and acting can get so self-congratulatory, this film is full of self-critique as well. The characters do so much in this movie, as every single one has deep flaws and greatly endearing qualities, allowing the viewer to take anyone's ideological side in the thematic concepts they advocate for or represent. Birdman just gives the viewer tons to chew on and lets the viewer think what they want about it and it does it all incredibly.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Moonrise Kingdom--These two Wes Anderson movies are the first (and still only at this point) Wes Anderson movies I've seen and they both entered my top 10. I'll just say when I finished watching Moonrise Kingdom I couldn't stop smiling. With or without so many things to love about in these movies, their emotional impact is enough for me to truly love them. Anderson's aesthetic is incredibly endearing, and it helps that he tells such beautiful stories full of wonderful characters with that incredible style of his.

---------------------

Lastly honorable mention to Star Wars the Force Awakens simply for being a new Star Wars movie. In my revisiting marathon of the previous 6 SW movies reminded how really not that incredible the existing films are, but the fact that the Star Wars universe that means so much to me and was such a huge part of my childhood is back and will have more chances to have a truly great story told in it is a beautiful thing.

I rarely watch movies anymore and often just fall asleep. I did watch a terrific movie this year:

Surprisingly good and mind-bending (before the "reveal"). Hitchcock is not consistent with me, especially his older films.
