I was chatting about this to a gaming friend recently and thought it was an interesting question: what makes a game funny? (as distinct from fun to play). Is it the graphics, the flavour text, the game play, the interaction?

Does your family have any silly catchphrases which makes everyone laugh for no discernible reason, and which would make no sense to an outsider?

Are there any games that are clearly trying to be funny but aren't? Or any that aren't trying to be funny but are? And finally, any that are trying to be funny and are?

This was a gift to one of my nephews who is getting into boardgames and asked for one for Christmas this year. As expected, this went down very well and was played several times straightaway by various family members (several without me or Helena). Luckily there are plenty more options for future birthdays and Christmases - makes him very easy, and pleasurable to buy for!

Kingdom Builder x 2
Consequences x 1
Dungeon Raiders x 1

Machi Koro x 2
Race for the Galaxy x 4

My annual post-Christmas games day, plus gamers staying over for New Year, plus a weekend with my children and husband all add up to lots of games played, although mostly of the lighter variety, as that's what I was in the mood for.

New games-wise I got to try the first two games of our Pandemic Legacy campaign - this will take many months to complete, as we're going to play through a month each time we host a games weekend with one of two guests, and they'll alternate playing with us. Also got to try a few new Christmas presents, but nothing stellar there, although Keep Talking was quite fun (not in the database yet - must add it!).

Gaming with other adults:

24 x Magic the Gathering
8 x Codenames
6 x The Game: Spiel..so lange du kannst
5 x Terra (just a teeny bit obsessed with this right now!)
3 x Love Letter
2 x Pandemic Legacy
2 x Qwixx
2 x Terra Mystica
2 x Tichu

1 x 7 Wonders, Ave Caesar, La Boca, Alles im Eimer, Burn Rate, Settlers of Catan, Cities and Knights of Catan, Cutthroat Caverns, Dead of Winter, Dominion (Dark Ages expansion), Doodle City, Identik, Escape: the Curse of the Temple, Flash Point Fire Rescue (submarine), GiftTRAP, Gnadenlos, Jungle Speed, Keep Talking , Knowing Me Knowing You, Mao, Mombasa, Picture This?, Race for the Galaxy, Rage, Robinson Crusoe (with the Beagle expansion), Schrille Stille, Splendor, Spyfall, Star Realms: Colony Wars, Tension, Time's Up Title Recall, Timeline (two different sets - Music & Cinema new to me), Wits and Wagers (using the BBC Boxing Day quiz for the questions), You Robot

Gaming with my children:

1 x Bloody Legacy, Bugs in the Kitchen , Cluedo, Telestrations, Top Trumps (first game played in the new year!)

I have to say that this was one of the best gaming weeks in many, many years. New Year's eve was strangely gameless, with a few solid hands of The Great Dalmuti, but nothing beyond that (but still a fun gettogether). My younger daugher beat me in Fauna for the first time (mostly copying my moves and happening to do it better than me). Great! But the best moment was New Year's day when we finally introduced our kids to Tichu. My older daughter had been asking to learn it for a while, so we invited our Tichu bunch at four in the afternoon to play with the kids for an hour or so. And what do you know? Around 11pm we had to force them into bed (ok, there was a long-ish leftover dinner break). They just couldn't get enough of it. And we have played three more times since, making Tichu my most played game of 2016 so far.

I don't know whether any of you can understand what I mean here. I remember some of you (and maybe myself) mentioning that there were some games in the collection that didn't see any plays, but you were keeping them anyway, hoping the kids would like them one day? Well, we play Tichu somewhat regularly and it is by far our favorite game, but still, seeing the kids' first foray into the game nearly moved me to tears. It was a really emotional moment.
(Of course, they are no match for us parents yet - besides being older, we have played the game for decades. But whenever I saw them do a meaningful move, I was just so happy.)

2 x Big Points
2 x Duck, Duck, Bruce

Post-Christmas had a bit of a jumble of gaming...

6   The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow x8 - game of the week because we started 2016 with a big session of Werewolf, introducing a whole bunch of people to the game and having lots of laughs (on topic for the questions above!).
8   Splendor - I think the first play I've had of this with four players, and it's very different from our usual two player games.
N/A   Indigo x3 - a Xmas present; a lot of people think Indigo retires Tsuro, but now I've tried both I disagree, largely as they require completely different thinking to play; delighted to have both in the collection.

5   Nim x3 - a few games with Miss B in a local cafe; she's really got the hang of it now!

We had a trip to the Thirsty Meeples boardgame cafe with another family, so there are a bunch of plays from there with various combinations of adults and children...
N/A   PitchCar - not played this for *many* years and this was an excellent starter game that we were all able to play.
N/A   Ugah Ugah! - quite a neat little Yahtzee-based Haba game.
N/A   Monza - more fun from Haba, I'd heard good things about this one, and it is indeed good, though probably better with fewer than six players.
N/A   Loopin' Chewie - I might have to get a copy of this for those times when you want to play Loopin' Louie but don't have four players.
N/A  Diamonsters - we weren't excited by this, but it was fast and entertaining enough for a while.
N/A   Coconuts - very silly, and the wife absolutely loved it, though we did spend a while trying to recover lost coconuts!

On my own...
N/A   The Game: Spiel...so lange du kannst! x2 - having just got myself a copy of The Game, it was interesting to try it solitaire, and it's not bad in that mode; I'm on one win, one (massive) loss.

No idea where the oldest's new love of Connect Four came from.

We're playing through the Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island – Voyage of the Beagle (Vol. 1) campaign this month with another couple. That should be fun!

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Managed a bit of holiday gaming despite hosting non-gaming relatives and having a lot of social functions of one sort or another to attend.

Played two games of Catan: Junior with one with to me and one win to Mrs Fish. Little Fish the elder wasn't happy with the result but managed to (mostly) keep his disappointment in check.

Also managed some gaming with Mrs Fish. Two plays of Roll for the Galaxy which was good and I introduced her to Raiders of the North Sea which she picked up very quickly and seemed to like.

Really? Chess? Wow, that must be a first since my teenage years! My son-in-law enjoys playing Chess (and Víkingaskák as well) so he duped me into playing a few games. And we also played against my wife's stepfather who used to play a lot of Chess. Otherwise it was a great holiday season, with lots of gaming.
