Well, halfway through February and I'm just now buying new gaming material? What's wrong with me?

Well, that's not entirely true. I preordered ASL Journal 11 last month. But I don't count it until it arrives.

There's a bunch of stuff I'd like to be getting, but money and space are tight. Still, I hope to get Hakkaa Päälle!: ASL Module 14 at some point this year.

At the moment, Threshold is coming out with new issues about as fast as I can get through the previous ones. The elves are an interesting idea for an issue focus, but I've yet to get into the issue enough to see how it went.

Captain's Log #41
Captain's Log #41 Supplement

I was expecting CL41 to hit PDF four months ago, but it just happened today. Not sure if something interfered, or if the 'one every three months' is just wishful thinking on my part. I'm sure the last month is because of various surgeries at the ADB office; I'm just wondering about why it didn't happen around September.

Anyway, the initial glance says nothing too interesting is in it, though some of that is because I already have the compiled PDF of "Maelstrom" which was partially published this issue. This is especially true of the Supplement, where that was the main item, though there is a Terrorwerks story in there, and that should be entertaining.

And after about three years, the ASL Journal is back! There's a lot I'd like to get, but the Journal is the one thing I make sure to keep up on.

Looks like no history in this one, which is fine, but I hope that's not permanent. Lots of articles around various products, which is nice. I'm probably the only person who doesn't care for the separate scenario cards (they get scanned either way, and I don't want to deal with all the lose paper), but the stack is impressively thick this time. Looks like two three-player scenarios, and of course, FB19, which I helped playtest.

Pyramid (Volume 3, Issue 91 - May 2016)

I bought a year subscription to Pyramid last year, which ran out in January. I was well behind on my reading when it ran out, so I made no immediate plans to renew, aided by a February issue I found relatively uninteresting.

But, I've ended up catching up on my RPG reading over the last few weeks, and the current Alternate Dungeons issue looks very interesting, so I've gotten a new three-month subscription, and I'll decide again when the June issue comes out.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Baldur's Gate is a big on-again off-again struggle for me and Smudge. Our first attempt to play it together back in the day fell through due to disk-swapping bugs, and a second recent attempt fell through because the old graphics were just too blurry for Smudge on a modern screen.

So, I've been waiting for the Enhanced Editions to be on sale. Which they finally were to celebrate the new Siege of Dragonspear. I almost picked that up as well, but... I don't know know when we'll get to the originals.

PG&E had a scheduled power outage to do some work in our area. Smudge and I had a long lunch (really long, they lost our order in the new system the first time), and then went down to the local game store.

And neither one of us got out without spending money. Smudge got a set of mouseling minis she's been staring at for a while (it says good things about the staff that they all think they're cool, instead of sneering at non-gaming minis).

Meanwhile, I spotted one of the Der Weltkrieg series on the half-off shelf. I remember several prominent people on the wargame forum being favorably impressed when they started coming out, though I haven't seen so much lately. So I grabbed it, and have been poking my way through the rules. They seem conventional enough in most respects; just the hexside terrain is different so far.

So, I've been caught up on the RPG reading for a bit, and the other reading is actually leaving me some extra time.

I used the opportunity to finally finish off a review of GURPS Thaumatology, and now I'm back to buying and reading new items. Sorcery is basically a translation of the magic system over to a Power framework. This idea's been popular for some time, and now there's a published 'reference' version of it.

Ever since being impressed with Divine Favor, I've been meaning to keep up with the Powers series. And a detailed look at fine tuning various senses seems like a good idea, especially since that's often part of the flavor/detail of furry settings and some aliens.

GIFT

So Patch came over today for some gaming and dropped a birthday gift on me! This was thoroughly unexpected. Thanks again Patch!

Apparently, he'd contacted my roommates to make sure they talked me out of buying it if I started talking about it (Not a major danger, I've been thinking in other directions, though I contemplated it back in Feb.)

This is one of the main GURPS supplements I've been meaning to get to. While RPG rules concentrate on the physical, most RPG games I've seen mix in a fair amount of the social on a pure personal level, and I'd like to see something about the broader stage. $14 was a bit of sticker shock, but at 88 pages its probably about twice as long as the normal PDF supplement.

July seems to be the traditional time for Toys R Us to have some sort of Skylanders-related sale. This year, they were offering a 3-for-1 deal on any of the single figures. I ended up picking up the Giants version of Hex (which will work with the original, unlike the Lightcore version I already have), Camo (Life dragon), and Lightcore Flashwing. They're all nice looking models, which is why I got them at this point, but I should break out the game to try out Hex and Camo (including their trials).

And another 200 pages of Mystaran goodness to go through. It's going to be interesting; there are bits of the history I don't like, but in general it is one of the things that makes the setting work.

Captain's Log #42 Supplement

GURPS Sorcery is really well done, and the only reason I didn't pick this supplement up immediately is that Threshold #12 came out the day before. About the time I was wrapping that up, the next issue of CL in PDF came out, so I got it all in one big package.

The Settlers II: Gold Edition
Imperialism
Imperialism II
Anno 1503: The New World

So GoG pulled me in with a sale again. I discovered Settlers II ages ago, so the primary motivation was to get a legal copy of that.

The Imperialism games were cheap, so I picked them up so I can play without the CDs (they actually run fine on Win 7, though it takes some effort as the 16-bit installer doesn't work on a 64-bit OS).

And, I picked up one of the Anno games to try out... someday.

I thought about getting Panzer General II as well, especially as it does not like modern OSes without tweaking, but it was more expensive, and I've gone through most all of it.

In bad news, I recently found out that GamersGate got bought by people who are not honoring their commitments, and I've effectively lost most of my Crusader Kings II and and Europa Universalis IV DLC that I never got around to converting to Steam keys. I got them all on good sales, and if I do that again, I'll probably still spend under list price, but I'm certainly never dealing with them again.

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire

I occasionally play some DS games (guilty note to self: finish Professor Layton and the Curious Village), and the transition of several things I'm interested in to 3DS has had me wistfully looking at that for a while.

And then I've been paying attention to Pokemon for the last couple months. Turns out since this is the 20th anniversary, they've been doing promotional giveaways of legendaries every month.

So, I finally decided to just go blow the money on a 2DS and a current Pokemon game. Hopefully I'll get through it and will continue on to other games.

And once again I happen to check the forum right after a new issue comes out. I'd like to know how that sixth sense of mine works.

Anyway, this issue of Threshold is about the multitude of intelligent races on Mystara. Should be very interesting. Sadly, my reading time is down at the moment, so it'll probably take a while to get through.

Pyramid (Volume 3, Issue 52 - Feb 2013)

SJG rarely has sales. But until the 15th of this month, they're holding a 40% off sale on all GURPS items, physical and electronic. The last time they did something like this was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 4th Ed. I'm not sure they've ever done it before that.

I figured the best way to take advantage of the sale was to get the next 'big ticket' item on my want list—Martial Arts. I then got a couple back issues of Pyramid that look handy (especially for "The Deadly Spring", and got Technical Grappling, which looks really promising from what I've seen.

And now that I'm overflowing with things to read, ADB releases the next issue of CL in PDF. There's a mid Y150s scenario to look at, but the ships are a little less interesting (though the KNH could be fun). The Supplement looks a little thin on content, but there are a couple of Lyran/Peladine designs, and another Terrorwerks adventure, which is always fun.

Bought: $21.74

Another impulse buy gone wrong. Smudge and I spotted a copy for somewhat cheap at GameStop and picked it up (last one in the store), intending to go to Toys R Us to spend a gift card on a second one so we could play together that night.

Naturally, Toys R Us was out. We're sure we've seen it there before.

We ended up checking GameStop's web app to find a store with another copy, which worked, and we spent a fun few hours playing together before the end of the year.

Total for the year: $448.86

Up a fair bit from last year, but still around my normal spending.

There's nothing I really regret missing out on, but I'm staring at some big pre-orders for 2017, and trying to decide how much I can afford. (Red Factories: An Advanced Squad Leader Historical Module – Stalingrad 1942 is definitely out of my price range, but I'm staring at it anyway.)
