Looking back over the last couple of months, which are the best games you've newly introduced to your kid(s), and why? Please pick an entry even if it's the same as someone else's because it's more fun that way. Or are there some which have enjoyed a new lease of life and have suddenly become popular again?

It would probably be helpful if you say what ages the children you played with are, and how much they enjoyed it as well as how much you enjoyed it.

Please, add you own entries - one per child might make sense if they are of different ages and abilities. And if you play with kids that aren't yours - nieces, nephews or friends' kids, include those!

Just like the idea of this series of monthly lists, I've also nicked the idea of an announcement thread from Grimwold. If you'd like to be alerted to the existence of the new list when it appears, subscribe to this subscription thread

7 Wonders is a family favourite round here, one of the games all five of us can play and enjoy. So I was not surprised when Matthew (14) easily grasped the rules to this 2 player version and proceeded to play well and enjoy the game (though I did beat him as befits my veteran status).

I thought that Matthew might also like to play this ancient title, but he declined whilst Rebecca (10) asked to play. So a three player game ensued, with my wife (age: top secret, but around 21) joining in the mayhem. It's actually a pretty simple game, and quite fun, though probably less so when you don't know much abut the 2000AD universe. Ironically, this date is before Rebecca was born! So, an OK experience for her, though I'd be surprised if she asked to play it again I think, there are so many others she prefers.

A charity shop bargain, Cat Attack, proved more popular. I got it because I thought the theme would appeal and because it has some nice bits in it. Slightly to my surprise there's a reasonably decent game in there as well, with some tactics/strategy as well as dice rolling.

This quick and simple dungeon exploration game has been played a few times; this time we played it with one of Matthew's friends who enjoyed it, so I think we can safely say it appeals quite generally!

This month saw the initial meetings of a new Dungeons and Dragons club in the Scottish Borders. Matthew was very keen to go, and persuaded two of his friends to turn up too, even though the venue was about 40 miles away. A good time was had by all (and a large number of goblins slain). They have started playing it at weekends as well, and have added other friends to the group. So a definite success - at least for the nerdy category of kids! More seriously, one of the friends is autistic and really struggles to engage with anyone else - hasn't been to school for ages, for example - so it is brilliant that he can spend several hours interacting positively with other people, some of whom he doesn't even know.

Not exactly new to them, but definitely a new campaign. And it's making them think about rules and how good they are - a novelty for the 12 YO...

Then again, we are playtesting something new...

No new games at the school games club (well, one or two of the kids may not have played one of the games before, but in the main we are playing the ones already learned). However I should highlight Incan Gold, which has been requested every week by every group of kids. There's just something about it which appeals. And I'm pleased to say that they can play it in a group by themselves without me having to run the game or explain anything - a real result I would say!

One play of this with Shawn. Despite the foolishness of the event cards and some childish mechanics, it will probably see more plays since we love several if the Cartoon Network shows.

Finally played this with the kids. My 8-year-old caught on right away and had a great time. I was very surprised with how frustrating this game was for my 6-year-old. He grasped the rules but the constant shifting made him very upset. He usually loves racing games so it's possible he was just tired and crabby.

Will definitely play with the kids again.

This was the biggest hit with my 8 year old. Ticket to Ride seems to be too long to hold the attention of my 6 year year old, so TransAmerica is a good compromise. We play without the Vexation expansion. I really enjoy this one as well and my wife has joined in for a couple of games.

We do play a variant on the scoring in that we just play one round and score upwards from zero based on the number of cities connected.

My six year old has had some frustrations with this game, as I don't think he cares for the game ending right before he completes his routes.

This is what happens when a big name designer (in this case the divine Reiner) phones in a game design to a toy company.

The components are great, as you'd expect from a LEGO product, and the Little Fish really enjoyed making the pyramid. Sadly, that's a good as it gets. The game combines roll-and-move and memory mixed with a poorly written and rather confusing rulebook which does not address key aspects to gameplay. From what I can tell Herr Doctor Doctor Knizia's sole contribution here was to lend his name and collect a paycheque.

That said, the Little Fish like it which is great but it's pretty disappointing that there's not even a half decent roll-and-move sort of game in here (like LEGO Batman)

We have house-ruled some aspects of the game so I can see this getting a bit more use. Overall though, this is not a game I'd recommend unless you're a serious Lego collector or something like that.

This was a gift from a gaming friend at our church, and it went down very will with both Joe (5) and Ben (3).

Ben seems to be more the board-gamer than his older brother, so he has requested to play it more often since.

They both get the idea of the game, but the youngest finds it a little harder to add up the points at the end of a round.. and neither really understand probability enough... though they've both realised your more likely to successfully steal if you choose one when rolling the Octopus dice.

Only one new boardgame for our 7-year old daughter: Fresco

we didn't finish our first try due to lack of time, but played it a second time a couple of days later.

She liked it.

We also played a game of Carcassonne last month and for the first time with the full rules (and two expansions). We only ever tried the game once before with her, but that was a year ago and then we left out the farmer rule.

She did well, but found it difficult to cope with the fact that when you finish someone else's city you get to take the resource tiles (wheat, fabric etc.) as she considered them to be her resources.

Board Game: Pharaoh's Gulo Gulo
At present the favourite game for my 4yo boy. Just fell short of reaching double digit plays by the end of April since getting in the second week of the month. Personally one of the best kids games that I've come across and a huge improvement on the original: better narrative, a patrolling mummy in the second act, coupled with the most innovative movement mechanism I have seen: fine motor extraction of a coloured ball from a bowl without causing a weighted stick/other balls hitting the table; success means moving to a spot matching the colour of the ball. Wonderful stuff.....

We play with 5yo and 7yo rules concurrently just to make it easy for him and challenging for me, but the big plus is the bowl mechanism is just as engaging.

This is our new Children's game for our 6 year old son. He loves to play it, and wants to be the one who hides the key. This game can very well be played by younger children I think, - it says from 5 to 99 years on the box.

I own the beautiful Ferti version so by the time I set it up (it takes quite long for such a simple game) Miska (7 and a half) was already amazed. We played only the standard version but he liked it and even did score a few points.

This small game adaptation of the Kinderspiel des Jahres-winning Whoowasit? is a cooperative game that can be played on many levels from beginner to incredibly hard. As my older kids (Borcsa, 5 and a half, Miska, 7 and a half) have quite a bit of experience with both the board game and the card game variant, we played the hardest level - and failed hard. The game is almost impossible to win without a considerable amount of luck, so we had to level it down to a challenging level with a real chance of winning. On this level they liked it and played fine.

Miska is learning to play chess in s hool now so I thought it was time to teach him Stratego. He quickly became a fan, understandably. It's not a game I would play against an adult anymore but it's great to play it against my son.

When I was writing my Ra geeklist last month I found out my collection was missing a SWAT/It's Mine! kind of game that I could play with the kids. Then I found this one in a toystore and found out this is exactly what I needed, with the added bonus of a SW theme which they both like now. So they liked it and proved to be very good at it, probably because of the small memory and speed element (whenever Borcsa played she won).

As my son is not skilled enough for Loony Quest yet (well, he's getting better) the new stuff introduced by this expansion helped a lot. With the help of portals you don't always need to go through narrow corridors, and when we played only I used the pyramid to make my task even harder, hiding and distorting parts of the view of the board. Even when using these in a normal play, I think both of them are fine additions to the game.

My 8yo doesn't like deduction games.

Deduction games with spells though? He's all in.

1 play - 4 players (me, my wife, 11yo son, 6yo son)

I told them rules, strategy and tactics.
I advised them during the play.
I warned them against silly and weak actions.

And they beated me! yuk

My wife - 20 points
6yo son - 17
11yo son - 15
me - 13

I demand a revenge! cry
