We all read plenty of books - rulebooks! But I am certain tha some of us enjoy some other books. I mainly read during the winter when I can't drive to work on motorcycle but once in a while also at other times.

This list is to list what we are reading - or just finished reading. Feel free to add your own books!

The Young Lions by Irwin Shaw
Format: Paperback

A classic WWII novel about two Americans and a German soldier, each connected one way or the other; the Jewish American soldier, Noah and the New York theater man Michael train together in Florida before going to Europe; they are split up, and fight the war in different ways before they are reunited again at a reserve camp.
On a vacation in the late 1930's Michael's young girlfriend, Margaret meet the Austrian ski instructor Christian, who later joins the call and enter the war. Christian starts in France, but is after his vacation in Berlin sent to Africa, where he barely escapes with his life, survive another campaign in France, and make it back to Germany where he in the end of the war have a showdown with two American soldiers...

A great book: I actually like the way it jumps between the different persons, how it tells the stories about their lifes before the war, how they manage the terror in different ways, their joys and internal battles. A great story about three men with three different ways to fight and survive.

I think I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good war story, mixed with love, historical stories, personal hardships, and descriptions of the daily life.

Richard Petty's 1977 biography "King Richard" by Bob Libby. A good read with plenty of input from Petty himself.

I've been getting into the history of NASCAR for the past 6 months and have read the biographies of Curtis Turner, Dale Earnhardt, Wendell Scott, etc. along with a lot of general interest stories of the sport in general. Strange, but I find it very entertaining - almost more so than NASCAR today.

The Battle of Jutland by Holloway Frost.
I grabbed the Kindle edition for .99 and I'm enjoying it. Just getting to get to the main event this morning. With all of Consim Press press releases on the Battle of Jutland for their upcoming game, I had to start reading to gain a better view of this WWI naval engagement.

A Man Called Ove
By: Fredrik Backman

A story of a man who seems just grumpy and out-of-touch with the modern world. But as this story unfolds, the reasons for Ove's behaviour become clear and you start to see the good within.

Very well written and relatable.

I'm not finished yet, so please don't spoil the ending if you've read this.

Game 7 1986 by Ron Darling

2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the 1986 Mets World Series championship so a few books have come out in honor of that famous team. Darling's book is an interesting look at his 3rd start in the series on game 7. It's no spoiler to anyone likely to read this book that Darling got rocked in the first three innings of the game and was pulled out with the Mets down 3-0. This book is partly a pitch by pitch account of that game from his viewpoint and extended memoir type recollections of his career forwards and backwards through the lens of that fateful game. It's kind of refreshing to read a first hand account by an athlete of a game where he just didn't have it and it's definitely refreshing to read an account of the 1986 World Series that doesn't focus on game 6 and Buckner's error.

I've been on a Hitchhiker's trip again recently. Re-watched the BBC TV series (truly excellent). Re-watched the 2005 film adaptation (rather disappointing in most respects). Started re-reading the book series. Finished Book #1 last week and currently working on Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Just finished Leviathan last week and am in the middle of Gibbons' Decline and Fall, and while I'm slowly going through John Irving's 158-Pound Marriage, I've really been pulled into Patrick Rothfuss' trilogy.

With slow reading, I was hoping to be caught up by the time the Doors of Stone comes out, but only if he brings it out in July, which seems far from likely. I hope this doesnt end up like my wait for Susanna Clarke's next book.

Still, anything good is worth the wait.

Now that I finished The Young Lions (Than you for the tip about the movie - I must see it! Great cast!), I kinda continue in the track of lions; the Danish title is simply made as "Richard Løvehjerte" (Richard Lionheart), but the official title is A Search for the King by Gore Vidal.

I have just started, but I have read some very mixed reviews - some say it start very good but then goes flat, other praise it like almost everything else by Vidal... I never read Vidal before, so we shall see.

The medieval theme interests me, and of cause - as also stated in the prelude, this is not faction, but is fiction, and even the things that he knew were wrong, he did not change much on because it had always been like this.
The book is divided into four parts:
Part one: The capture, autumn 1192
Part two: The search, winter 1192/93
Part three: Home coming: Spring 1993
And The Battle March 28, 1194.

We shall see what I think.

The copy I am reading is a hardcover from a Book Club printed in Copenhagen 1951. The illustrated cover is missing, but the binding and paper on the hardcover also looks nice.

Before I will go to sleep (soon), I think I will take another chapter...

I'm starting in on Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson, an author highly recommended by my brother. I actually read the third book in this series several years back so I know he's a fine writer. Also reading Lord Peter, a collection of short stories by Dorothy L Sayers. And Trouble in the Brasses by Charlotte MacLeod (as Alisa Craig). And want to reread How Much For Just the Planet? by John M. Ford (if only to read Neil Gaiman's death scene again...) And I'm about due to attempt Moby Dick again. Maybe I'll make it through this time....

After finishing the story about the bard Blondel's search for the captured King Richard, I picked up a short version of King Solomon's Mines by Rider Haggard.

A pretty good book; I might even take up the full version. The copy I read was an edition from the late 1960's edited by Kjartan Holm. It was only on roughly 90 pages.

The Postman Always Ring Twice.
A noir classic from the 1930s, which was banned in Boston when it was first published. Too much sex and violence.

Frank, a young drifter begins to work at a roadside diner in California, where he falls inlove with the Greek owners American wife. The two young loversdecide to get rid of the Greek and might see themselves at the gallows....

So far pretty good! I'm half way through it and the Greek is written in Broken Danish, so I assume that he is also written in Broken English in the English versions...?
I think I picked this up at a "take some books and pay what you want" shelf outside someone's house. I paid a couple of dollars for 5-10 book.
I believe the book about Richard Lionheart was also one of those.... Lionheart is donated to a non-profit second hand shop, together with Quartermain (King Solomon's Mines). So far, I might keep this one...

Finished the book yesterday before going to work; It was a quite good book! No wonder this became a classic. I kinda expected the end conclusion, but not how it happened!

The Relic by Evelyn Anthony

This is one of those books which have a title translation like movies used to have in Danish: A good example is James Bond: Dr. No is "translated" into Agent 007: Mission Drab (And the book is titled Agent 007: Operation Mord) - okay; you don't understand my hoax language Mission Kill and Operation Murder - that is the Danish words for Dr. No.
Goldfinger as called Goldfinger (movie) and Contra Goldfinger (book), and From Russia With Love is called "Agent 007 Jages" - this book have one of those translations too: "The Relic" is in Danish called "Farlig Kærlighed" (Dangerous Love).
The title was not very inspiring to me, but the cover showed the face of a beautiful woman, faded over the Vasilji Cathedral - so as a russophile I was already alured, and thougth it could be one of them spy novels with a dangerous Russian woman sedusing a spy or who is a spy or..

The description was short and not spy like; Shortly it tells that an old Russian (according to the text, Ukrainian according to the following) imigrant is about to die at Jersy island, he asks his daugther Lucy to return an old cross to Ukraine.

So far I have only read the Prelude, starting in Stalinistic, pre-WWII time (late 1937 if I remember correct): the prolouges main character is an Ukrainian born, high ranked NSVD officer, and have seen his old friend's name on the regime's death list. His friend is visiting him directly at the office where he gives him the old relic Sct. Vladimir's Cross (claimed to be destroyed by the Red Army during the Russian Revolution) - the cross was given to his mother by the Patriac of Kiev, whom his father had tortured to get it, not knowing that his religious wife had gotten it and hid it away. With this, he should save him self after Father Stalin's regime ends. He also ask to help his wife and two sons, as he know they too will die. He is mostly afraid of the torture, and his friend tells him that he wont let it happen, and gives him a hug... during this he shoots him.

He help the wife and kids to his mother in Kharkiv, and from there finds an abandoned farm where he installs them, and his friend's driver to protect them. After some time, he falls inlove with the widow (she know that he shot her husband - and also why. She also knew he was marked as a traitor of the state, and was fearing this), and the feeling is mutual. They even get married and have a daugther together.
When the German-Soviet pact ends, our man sign up for the army, and sends his family towards Moskva. His wife is pregnant again.
... as they are packing, a gray sidecar motorcycle with a black and white cross drives to the old farm... as the kids are hidden away, one of the two German soldiers enters the house...

And this is how the Prelude ends! Talk about a cliff hanger!
I assume that the unborn child is the Lucy's father, Yuri (as the two other kids are called Stefan and Victor), and this is the Cross' and family's story, more than a story about the people themselves. But the very harsh cut makes me confused about what about this gab that there might be?! What happened to the family? Did the mother get raped? Did they escape to Mosvka? Or was they sent to camp? When did Yuri get from Ukraine to England? Was it even Yuri who was the unborn child (or was it never born?) - or is Yuri actually Victor (who are the only of the sons who have seen the Cross)?

Already this is getting ingriguing for me... but I am afraid it will be too girly a story when I get further in.

I think no matter what, this is a keeper, as it fits my Russian Collection, despite it may not be too closely connected - or correct (it is fiction after all)...

More to come later

Pelle Erobreren (Pelle the Conqueror)
by Martin Andersen Nexø

I have been reading a classic for some time now: I have one of the first editions from the early 20th century (this print is a 1915 print) running along, I believe it's 7 volumes.

The book is about Pelle, who comes to Bornholm (a Danish island in the Baltic Sea) around the age of 6 or so with his father to get work on one of the farms there. After some time they find work as herds at one of the big farms and life there have it's ups and downs.

Pelle also starts school, where other farmland boys go - as well as sailor boys - and a handfull of girls. Schools back then were different from now I can tell you! Pelle learns a lot in his time on the farm, and changes a little bit during his growth.

I just finished the first part (two books) called "Childhood", and is now taking up the second part "Learning Years".
Pelle is leaving the farm (a thing he and his father often discussed to do together many times - and even tried to in the middle of the night) short after his confirmation, and is now after seven years on the farm on his way to the town to find work - but he do now know what work he want to get yet.
He sees many people entering the town, just as himself - but also see many people, including a lot of Swedes, leaving the town to find work on the farms, just like he and his father did.

Pelle Erobreren (Pelle the Conqueror) is written by Martin Andersen Nexø: A man who just like Pelle moved to Bornholm with his Family (but from Copenhagen, not from Sweden). His political interests (at the time he wrote Pelle Erobreren he was a Socialdemocrat - and later on he became a Communist), is shown a lot in his books - mainly in Pelle, as it takes a close look to how the workers lived. Firstly on the farms, in the later book (where I am starting now) at the crafters in the towns, and further more in the industrial city - where Pelle is also joining the worker's movement.

In 1989 the first two parts were made as a movie, which recieved an Oscar for best foreign movie.

This print is written in an older version of the Danish writing rules; there are some words that is spelled differently, as well as capital letters of nouns, and "aa" as prior to "å" which was intoduced in 1948.

A Street Cat Named Bob
By James Bowen

I have just started this meowgraphy by a guy in London, who was "a failed musician an recovering drug adict", who finds an injured ginger tomcat in the gloomy hallways of his accommodated shelter.

This meeting changes his life when he chooses to adopt the stray - and together they help each other out.

Quote:
When James Bowen found an injured, ginger street car curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change.

Soon the two were inseparable and their diverse, comic an occasionally dangerous adventures would transform both their lives, slowly healing the scars of each other's troubled pasts.

A street cat named Bob is a moving and uplifting story that will touch the heart of anyone who reads it.
I was recommended to read this, so I now that Pelle is put back on the shelf, it's time for some purrfect reading...

Currently reading the rulebooks and command books for WarmaHordes as my son has developed at least a passing interest in the game. So far, looks to be a solid minis system. I look forward to when we can actually start playing some games.

Mafia (Original title: The Godfather)
by Mario Puzo

After reading about the street cat, I wasn't sure what to read. But as I was taking the bus to work today, since I will have a long day at work, I had to pick a book: Some of my Danish colonization books have been waiting for me to give a read - however, I had also been thinking about giving this classic a go. I haven't actually seen any of the films - apart from 10 minutes here, and 5 minutes there and so... So it will be the right way of reading the book - then maybe later watch the movie.

I have only just started the book, but I hope it is well worth reading. It has a 4.35 rating at Goodreads, so it can't be all that bad...?

Took another one of my old books from the shelf to give it a try: A collection of short stories by Steen Steensen Blicher, with the first story being The Rector of Veilbye (1829) - considered to be the first crime novel in Denmark.

This is a book that you need to be wanting to read in order to finish - my copy is early 20th century, if my memory serves me right, and is written in a very old style - very fitting for the first half of 19th Century.
The story itself was not bad, written as diary sections, and is based on a real event from the 17th Century.
But after finishing this first story, I chose to give this book a rest - read another one and then pick up the next story after this.

... When I come back home I might update with my current book.

Tyvenes Marked (Original: Tjuvarnas marknad - Translated: Marked of Thieves) by Jan Guillou

Swedish crime by a well know Swedish author; the man behind other crime novels such as the Hamilton series, the stories about the fictive Swedish templar knight Arn de Gothia, and more.

In this story we follow a group of policemen from different districts in Stockholm put together in a task force led by the female inspector from Fraud, Ewa in a hunt for some thieves breaking into some homes owned by rich people - all by the same M.O.: Break in, steal art, jewlery, and collector's wine - fit in into one of the victims cars and steal this too.

The book also follow the story of a new-rich CEO, and his ways of getting more money - in legal ways, while legally avoiding to paying tax for them. He grew up on the country side and have fought his way up. His battles with the press - and the pricks in his social circle.

A man asks a woman what she does, and she tells him to tell her first what he does; after some hesitation, he tells the woman he is a retired thief. She laugh: She is a police inspector... But she is drawn to him...

So many stories in this all put together in a nice web... Were they all necessary or more to fill up the pages? Well, I am not sure; some of these side stories just seem to add in some cliff hangers and some extras, that aren't really a main line of the story.
But the story is still good. I enjoyed reading it...

But now it is back to one more short story by Steen Steensen Blicher before I can get to read something else.

Towards Zero by Agatha Christie

It have been a while since I last read some Agatha Christie (The Big Four in Feb 2015), and I have a few of her books on the shelf so I thought it was time to read one of them.

This is neither Miss Marple nor Hercule Poirot: This is one of the stories featuring Superintendent Battles. The story is about a... kind of messed up marrige - and the perfect murder!
Neville is a wealthy man and an avid sportsman; great tennis player, good golfer. He is married to a young, beautiful woman - his second wife the lft-haned Audrey visits his childhood home every September, and this year Neveille and his wife Kay will be there at the same time: According to what everyone's being told; a way to make peace and friendship between the two wives.

Thomas - a man, working in the colonies, are also coming back to England for a vacation - he have his own plans with Audrey.

Kay's friend Ted is living on a nearby hotel visiting the house... he is a lazy playboy, no one really seem to be too fond of him apart from Kay.

Then there is the old laywer... an old friend of the Lady; the woman whom Neville grew up at after his parents passed away.

The lady who help the Lady - apart from the house staff... a quite intelligent woman.

And of cause the Lady herself.

First the old laywer dies: A heart attack from walking up the stairs at the hotel because of the sign on the elevator saying "Out Of Order". The hotel on the other hand claims it have been working perfectly fine...
Then the old lady dies: A hard blow to the head, a bloody right hand golf club only with Nevilles prints on it. The blow seems to have been done by someone left handed. Neville's blue jacket is full of blood, and both blond and red hairs, as well as powder on the collar.

But did Neville really do the murder? Something does not match up...
Battle was actually on vacation at his nephew who gets put in charge at the investigation, and Battle helps along and take charge as of he higher rank...

This is a story that goes in and out like a snake - pretty good!
