Noticed I made list 123 and now list 223. Can it be I will make list 323 too?

Also noticed that I finished Peter hamilton's "Judas Unchained" the week before I made my last list(204) and this last week I finished Peter Hamilton's "The Reality Dysfunction"

This list is inspired by the book "The things they carried." about what American soldiers carried with them in the Vietnam War.
I read it during an American litterature course during my teachers academy years.

What things are you carrying with you on a normal basis?

I'm always carryig my phone, cardholser, keys and a token to use on the shopping carts at the shop. I have such a token attached to every keychain I use.

I don't often carry cash, as I use my card to pay with.

What do you carry on a normal basis?

When I go on holiday a flyswatter is always in the baggage. There is nothing more annoying than flies in your room on the first night.
When we go to Croatia we also bring carbine hooks to attach beach madrasses to the backpack if we have to walk to a quiet beach. Carbine hooks are awesome. And books.

What thing do you carry on holiday that might be a little of the beaten track?

Game Week

 8   Zombicide: Black Plague x5
9   Roll for the Galaxy x3 NEW!
 8   Bohnanza
 7   Extra! x2

Andrea and I had some unfinished business with scenario #2 from Zombicide Black Plague, so we put that on the table on Monday evening. But the game won again - Zombicalypse. We tried again on Wednesday evening, and finally, we won. That scneario needed three playings to finally win it!

Our RPG night was scheduled on Friday, but unfortunately, or GM fell ill, so it was cancelled. Andrea and I decided to try out Roll for the Galaxy - I have that thing lying around for more than a year, unplayed! If you know Race for the Galaxy, the rules are pretty easy!

On Saturday, two friends came over, and as the weather was fantastic, we played Roll for the Galaxy again on the patio. 4 players. The game really shines here! We had two games in a row, before we enjoyed a fine tuna salad we prepared earlier. Then we went into my Gaming Dungeon to try out Quest #3 from Zombicide. Our friends also kickstarted the game, and wanted to play it badly. It was a desaster. In our first game, after one hour, the board was full with zombies, necromancers and abominations. When our third survivor went down, we conceded and set up again. But the second game wasn't very different from the first - we simply were overwhelmed by the zombie horde. It was already late then, and so we looked for something light to end the evening, so I suggested Bohnanza - I haven't played that one in years. Surprisingly, it was a huge success! Everybody seemed to have fun with that little, highly interactive card game!

On Sunday, Andrea and I tried scenario #3 again. Funny, this time it was a cakewalk! Although we needed two and a half hour to complete the scenario, we won easily, with only one survivor dead in the end (but that was my fault - he stood alone on a double spawnzone when 8 zombies accompanied by an abomination entered the board. But while the zombies chipped him in pieces, the others completed the objectives and we won the game.

I put a roast into the grill and while we waited for it, we played two games of Extra! (there are two German versions around, one is named "Choice" [!] and the other "Einstein"). Also a game I haven't played in decades ... Andrea wasn't very impressed by it - I guess nowadays, there are much more and better dice games around. I think I'll retire this one.

New Games

I got an email from my FLGS, three new Star Wars: Imperial Assault minis are available - one of them Greedo! Remember? Han shot first, but poor Greedo died ... great to have that guy around for our next campaign (which is scheduled after our Baltic Sea tour); Andrea got Obi Wan Kenobi for the Allies and the Grand Inqusitor (from the new Rebel TV series) also makes an appearance in the game.

When I collected the minis from my FLGS, I also saw a brand new game on the shelves: Tyrants of the Underdark ... a deck-builder with Dark Elf theme. Despite the price, I was sold immediately! Looks great, I hope to play that one soon. As Andrea was also very fascinated by the Drizzd do'Urden Dark Elf trilogy, I guess she will like the game too!

Solid week. Got some dissertation work done. The bolder continues to move slowly--one half page at a time, but at this point I'll take any progress I can get. In about a week I will have established a pace that I can use to set a schedule.

On the game-playing side things were excellent. I had some family over for some lighter games on Saturday that were all enjoyable. I played a good game of TS with a friend and Cati and I started up a CoC campaign. I'm really impressed with the rpg. It's got great, simple rules and I could see it becoming a regular pastime for us. I didn't realize how much I missed roleplaying.

Alright, then, big news, I just signed the contract for game 2 (the opium wars game). I'll have more to share on that when I'm able, but things are moving forward.

THEN that game John Company I mentioned, well I had a couple lovely conversations about it and figured out some things I needed to figure out. The game has its key mechanism now (which is very odd and new, I think) and its simply a matter of sharpening the edges. I'm pretty pumped for it and I think it's going to be the Fall's design project. If all goes well I'll be tossing it towards Phil at the year's end.

Trains: Rising Sun ww 2p x2
Played with wife, on 2p maps. Excellent. I really like the extra level of player interaction the board adds to a, by now, oft-imitated rarely-acceptable dominion formula. It was so much better than I expected. It allows for, well, not screwage, but a lot of shoving, if that makes sense. And waste generates so quickly it's got an extra exciting PYL element to it- do you barrel forward damn-the-expense, or do you try and take a more measured approach? We split the games. The first Megan annihilated me, as she played the board better, the second I took, because I played like Megan from the first game.
H. H. is becoming one of my favourite game designers- he creates euros through the mirror darkly, and often with an interesting element.

Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper ww 2p x1
This game is absolutely fantastic. The more we play, the more we see the off-colour beats and the fun little thrusts and parries. Megan took me down, one round having the most amazing prediction I've ever seen.
From gallery of hanibalicious

Roll for the Galaxy ww 3p x1
One of the most disgustingly high score games we've ever played. On the last round, Megan and I both triggered about 10 dice on produce/ship- I producing, she shipping. Her mother didn't get in on that parasitism, and as a result, we blew her out of the water.
Most memorable moment:
Megan: "Is there a 6dev tile that rewards you for blue planets?"
Me, holding tile I just built: "Yeah, this one."
I won with 59 to 49. Disgusting, I told you!

51st State ww 3p x1
I blew everyone away here too. Megan and I are both of the opinion that the Mutants are, perhaps, a little bit better than the other factions, especially considering the new trimmed game length (and the fact that you no longer wait for spoils). Card draw is definitely king in this game- the balance is a bit different than in the old game. I still enjoyed it but Megan was a bit miffed that my engine basically hit supernova at the end, maxing out two different scoring buildings.

Also, went kayaking in the American River- that previous geeklist musta inspired us:

Board Game: Carcassonne

MesterQuiz x2
Two games with the wife at the cabin we stayed at from Wednesday to Thursday. I quite enjoy this quiz game. Wife took both games.
Carcassonne
A quick game vs. the wife on the iphone. Wife won.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Quidditch Card Game
VS. my daughter at the cabin we stayed at on Sunday. Slytherin took this one. I was Slytherin. Daughter won on Monday with Slytherin.

Kickstarter.
I plunged for the Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles 2nd chance kickstarter for the 3 game package. THis on the merit that I have enjoyed Jim Krohn's other designs. And he has mentioned solo rules in the making. It's a bunch of money, but less than Conflict of Heroes w. solo would be.
Still have a few days to decide if this is the tactical game to get. Might need to get Roger's wonderful ASL: Starter Kit 2 played before the kickstarter ends to see if that might be something. Decisions, decisions.

Running
Last Monday I ran 11 kilometers in just a few minutes over the hour. Very happy with that.

Hiking
Me and the wife went on a hiking trip Wednesday to Thursday.
We walked what amounted to around 15 kilometers each way, in sunny weather on Wednesday and with rain threatening, but never coming, on Thursday.
http://www.ut.no/kart?lat=59.11637&lng=6.97786&zoom=13&hytte...
In that map cutout we started at Elsvasshei in the lower part and walked to Storevatn in the upper right.

An overview of the Storevatn cabins and Storevatn. The water is at 959 meters.
From gallery of ad79

Just an image of the door of the cabin. This is an old cabin that was restored in the 80ies. It's originally from the 30ies. Used by a Heiberg fellow to organize hunting trips for rich and aristocratic British.
From gallery of ad79

At night we got to witness the moon rise over the nearby mountian.

A very nice trip and we used 3h15m on our walk in and 2h55m on our walk out. More uphill on the way in.

On Sunday we went to Nilsebu. A cabin where my father in law is spending the week as a "volunteer". We stayed form Sunday to Tuesday and went fishing and picked some berries.
External image

The cabin in the front with the unpainted par is a private cabin. The one we stayed in is the one closest to the water. The small building with the green door is the toilet/doghouse/woodshed/garbage room.
The cabin is accessable by boat after a long drive into the mountains. The road is there because the water is used by the hydroplants and when we were there the water was about 10 meters lower than in the above image.

Both of these cabins we visitted are part of Turistforeningens network of cabins and hiking tracks. All the cabins are open and you don't have to book in advance. On some cabins you can book in advance if you like. Some are manned by staff, some have a storage of food if you don't want to carry everything and some are unstocked. It's a very cool part of Norway.

This gent and I were last seen together in person in 1983 in high school in Germany. We've kept in touch ever since, the means of which were determined by the technology of the time. People who knew us at the time used to joke that we were two people sharing one brain, and we always joked that this made us halfwits. Through serendipity, Michael was returning to China where he's been for the past decade and a half, and had an entire day in Vancouver. We got together and picked up where we left off. A wonderful day. And we played some games.

 5   Star Realms NEW!

 9   Manoeuvre
I won as the Spanish over his Ottomans. This game is still as appealing to me now as the last time I played it - in 2014!

 6   The Last Spike
Not as good two player.

 7   Deep Sea Adventure
The drowning game captures another victim!

This past week the following interesting things have happened:
Saturday was the big highlight of course, but yesterday, I was able to attend the second of two shows in Vancouver of The Tragically Hip, on their farewell tour. This band is huge in Canada, and their lead singer and creative influence, Gord Downie, has terminal brain cancer, and he wanted to go on one last tour with his band.

The show was phenomenal. Emotional. A 17,000 person sing-a-long.

Gord had moments where the odd word was missing from the lyrics. He had teleprompters around the stage to help him out. soblue

His voice was in fine form. We all sang along. 2016 continues its annus horriblis of consuming artists and musicians and actors...

This is a sad song that didn't leave a dry eye in the house...

Ok, since I'm supposed to tidy the house I needed music.

Put on Muse and the Live at Haarp show on the cd player.
