What is a Geek Chat League?

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

I listen to some podcasts and I recently heard an episode of the podcast Every Little Thing. It's not groundbreaking, but I heartily enjoyed the first episode on people whose hobby it is to experience Total Solar Eclipses. They plan years in advance and then travel to often remote places to experience these supposedly life-changing experiences.

Sorry for the late list, I'm filling in for skippen.

Anyway, in the podcast, they discussed the almost mystical nature of total eclipses, that they produced unexpected emotional responses in people that witnessed them. Once they saw one, they were often hooked, even if it only lasted for a few minutes.

Question 1: Have you ever witnessed a total eclipse? If not, any other astronomical phenomenon that impressed you?

Apparently some people could not control themselves during the event, they were overcome by emotion. Something about the event triggered a sense of our place in the universe and the grandeur of the heavens. This often resulted in a sort of feeling of cosmic brotherhood.

Question 2: Can you think of an event that brought people together, even if only temporarily? What about a game that produced camaraderie?

There is a memorable audio clip of a man sort of bumbling to himself as the eclipse begins. They actually compare the noise to an orgasmic moment, in which I'm not sure the man knew what noises he was making. The experience just overcame him. I encourage you to seek out the podcast if only for the audio clip. Hearing this with people applauding in the background first amused me, then almost made me understand the emotional gravity of the event.

Question 3: Do you talk in your sleep or sleepwalk? Are you ever accused of making odd or annoying noises? If not, what noises annoy you?

You must use eye protection in order to view the solar eclipse.

Question 5: Have you ever been injured (or hurt) while playing a game? If not, would you keep playing if you got a cut or jammed your finger? What would it take to get you to stop playing a game you were thoroughly enjoying?"

You can consult maps that show the "path of totality" where the eclipse will take place. Here's one for Nebraska:
External image

Question 6: Are there games where you can foresee the path the game is going to take? Is there a certain point where you just call the game? Or do you always play it to completion?

N/A   Secret Hitler x3 - I think I need to finally rate this game. For me it's a 9. Just about every time there are intense moments of joy that I love. That joy usually involves yelling.

N/A   Bubblee Pop x2 - I enjoy playing this with my 6 year old. It's a fun little "match 3" type game that plays pretty quickly.

7   Big Boggle - I always enjoy Boggle, there were some truly impressive words found.

10   Can't Stop - We had a first - the winning player won with 5 columns! It gets increasingly risky, since as you lock columns you decrease your available options. Luckily the winner brought the last three columns up fairly equally. But it was really an exciting finish. It almost seems shameful now to win with just 3 columns.

8   Dominion: Dark Ages - Sort of a slog of a game, dictated by everyone messing around with Fool's Gold.

9   Dominion: Prosperity - A great big money session. It just feels great to have a ton of money!

N/A   Fool's Gold - This played more quickly this time, it's a passable alternative to Thebes, though it plays a little too long for my tastes. It would be best as a filler.

7   Giro Galoppo - This is a family favorite.

7   Hey, That's My Fish! - Jacob beat us all handily!

7   Kemet - I know some people don't like games like these, where everyone conspires to prevent a player from winning until everyone is on the brink of winning and you just let what happens happen. Going later in turn order definitely made a huge difference in this session, but I'm okay with it.

10   Nertz - It felt good to win after a fairly long drought.

 8   Pickomino

9   Ra - I was way too greedy and almost got nothing, a truly shameful showing for me.

8   Race for the Galaxy - I've been playing the new Android/iOS app and it's great! Roger, all it takes is a bunch of plays against the AI to understand the game!

N/A   Sagrada NEW! - I was glad to play this and a little disappointed to discover that I really like it. The theme is actually kind of fun, the colorful dice look good. And the puzzle-y nature of the game is fun. It feels like Take It Easy at the end. I like how quickly it plays.

N/A   Tichu - We got absolutely pounded. Often the game is a slog, but this one was over incredibly quickly. It's crazy how fast the game goes when one team gets a couple double wins, one of them with a grand tichu.

I'm starting to get excited for the Cannes Film Festival, which is a cinephile's highlight of the year.

Game Week

10   Mansions of Madness: Second Edition x3 NEW!
 N/A   Unpublished Prototype
 8   18SS x2 NEW!
 8   Carcassonne: Star Wars

You might remember … I added a new FFG Arkham Files game to my collection last week: Mansions of Madness: Second Edition. And I’m so happy I did! We played it three times the last week – two times Scenario 1 (we won one of them) and Scenario 2 yesterday (in which we were badly defeated – boy, this seems to be a hard one!).

I’m happy to report that MoM2 is a board game, not a computer game (otherwise, it would have been marked “for sale” immediately. Nevertheless, you need a tablet or similar device near the game board. Basically, the app takes care of events (which would have been card draws otherwise), changes the scenarios and encounters every time you play them (to get a good replay value) and does all the bookkeeping for you. Not bad! This is – to my surprise – the most immense and thematic Arkham Files game I own. The atmosphere is so dense, and the game play is one continued, uninterrupted tension. Andrea and I, we both loved it after the first five minutes of play.

Friday was train game night, and Lonny – after finishing his 18CZ design – came up with a new idea: 1840, Vienna Tramways. We played for about 2 hours and then we stopped because of some troubles with the rules. The game still needs a lot of work, but it sports totally new concepts for an 18xx and I’m already excited to play more of this!

I then pulled out 18SS – a Japanese design, set in a fictive area. A quick & short game; although it features 15 companies, the game is played in two hours! A few tricks here and there and a bank of only 8,000 Yen help to achieve this goal. The first game was over in 1.5 hours when two players went bankrupt and the others decided not to move on alone; it would have been boring for the others. So we started a second game (and now knew what to expect) and we finished in a little more than 2 hours. This one will surely be revisited soon. As the game is still available in Japanese hobby stores, I wrote a quick review to provide an overview of the game and the gameplay: 18SS – familiar on the outside, different on the inside, but still 18xx

After the MoM2 scenario from Sunday, Andrea and I played a nice game of STAR WARS Carcassonne, thus celebrating the release of Rogue One on DVD (already ordered) as well as Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you Microbadge: Darth Vader fan).

New Games

I saw it and I immediately bought it: Cave Troll (2nd Edition). I own the first edition, but the second looks much nicer and even contains a lot of miniatures for each player, so I couldn’t resist. The game is nice, but nothing more. Maybe too Euro for my overall taste, but nevertheless, when I saw it, I had to buy it.

Other News

I was at a wedding party yesterday – one of my train gaming buddies finally put a ring on his girlfriend’s finger. Great party, great food, great people! I should go to weddings more often! One of our gifts was a personalized (photoshopped) copy of Love Letter. It was a total hit! Everyone was excited by the self-made cards and a lot requested immediate game play! Of course, a wedding is totally the wrong place for gaming (or am I wrong here?), but the groom promised everyone an invitation to a game night!

I hope you all had a great week too! meeple

 8   Let's Catch the Lion! x2

Ok, so not really Shogi. But with Let's Catch the Lion I'm seeing my boys really develop as think-a-turn-or-more-ahead players. If the sum total of my gaming hobby is fun and that, then I'm pretty content.

Rory's Story Cubes made its return to our table after a long bike ride to a cafe. It served admirably as a pastime while we waited for our order. Speaking of bike rides, I am super proud of my boys: on their little bikes (with training wheels), they rode 10kms on Saturday. The payoff was a petting zoo with alpacas, ostriches, and at least 20 parrots, one of whom said "Hallo!" as we walked by. Great stuff, with promise for more.

PBEM
I have never been as lost in a game as I am in Pax Porfiriana. None of my instincts are paying off, nothing I want to do is happening (or happening easily), even the basic mechanics elude me (I've read the rules twice & watched a video). And it's still fun. If I ever grok it, I'm gonna rock it.

El Grande wholly lives up to its name and reputation. I save a lot of money by not buying new releases because they do not do what the 1990-2010 generation of games does: simple rules with complex play.

It occurred to me that I have to 25-minute blocks a day when I'm guaranteed to be all by myself: my commutes. So I got a little microphone and I've started writing, by dictating. I transcribe the following morning, while the kids and Shenomad are still asleep. So far, so good.

My game den is almost done (got the artwork up yesterday, cut the table cloth today), and I have side-by-side projects on deck: set up Warriors of God, so I can finally begin my thrashing at Jacob's hands; and construct my copy of Agricola. Good things await.

We just started a new term here, and my main trainer from last term (my first here) is on maternity leave. So (what to me feels like) all of a sudden, I'm kind of on my own, as my remaining colleague in the English Dept. doesn't teach any of the same classes I do. Which means I'm doing a lot of stuff myself that used to be done for me, including composing 6 exams by Monday. Long story short: I'm drowning in a sea of paper.

Finally, my ultimate season starts this weekend. I've flung plastic all of once (at a practice) in the last six months. And on Saturday I'm making my local debut in the Dutch Elite League--yikes!

Hope you all have a lovely week.

 8   Button Men x22
 9   Blam!
 8   Cephalopod

I played my first games in an online Button Men league last week. There are a number of tournaments running at any moment, and the one I joined is an odd round robin sort of thing.

5 divisions of 6 players (I joined in the bottom tier), and each season the commissioner picks 8 buttons with a theme and similar win rates - this season is buttons with 4 dice (the typical recipe calls for 5) and a win rate in the 52-56% range. Each player ranks the 8 buttons in order of desire to play, leaving each player with a button with which they will play a match against every other selected button in their division.

I ended up with my second choice button - The Tick! - and in an ironic twist the first completed match saw me beating my first choice button!

I am continuing to be astounded by the breadth and depth of what on the surface appear to be an almost trivially light dice game - there is so much more going on, and an impressive and welcoming community exploring all the different ways to beat people up!

-----

Finally got to see the result of all of the work Johanna has been doing for the past couple of months when I went to the opening of the NYFA production of Urinetown she directed. This is a show I saw regionally a decade ago which really left very little impression, but which blew me away this weekend (a story I heard from a number of others in the audience that night.) JOhanna thinks it may have been the best thing she has produced, and the response from faculty and cast has been uniformly positive. The comedy was sublime, with some of the timing otherworldly, and the wall of sound harmonies were magnificent. I'm so proud!

And next week I get to see the premiere of the original movie musical she directed, Food Like Love! (Music and Lyrics by Bobby Cronin, Script by Christina Toy Johnson.)

Then for her birthday, Boo's first Broadway show - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Rftg: AA (No Orb) 2p x1

We started out with laser guns
hard life livin', underneath two suns
traded guns for cash goods,
and our plasticine hoods
now we're pimpin blue fun to the galaxy's sons
--
Really Enjoying this with my co-worker. He's a fun guy, and we play a lot online. This however, is in person. I'm slowly trying to shift away from screens in my free time. AA might be my favourite arc- we'll see if xeno makes a bigger impact.

Roll for the Galaxy - Ambition (no goals) 5p ww x1

We started out a simple race
content to stay in just one place
beneath the silver-bluish sky
until a jumpship floated by

Now our race begins to stir
as new galactic trades incur
and lead us by the spiral arm
to other worlds that mean no harm

We sold our people's novelties
imbued with charming qualities
intrinsically. our race did well
no uprisings or wars to quell

But oh, when this new age had passed
and we were judged by wealth amassed
The people with the biggest gun
were deemed be the ones who won.
--
Roll, man. What a kick it is. I love the way that game, to me, is an intergalactic narrative. I become emotionally invested in my empire, imagining what sort of lives my subjects lead. Sure, it's doubly dependent on luck of the cards, but it's super satisfying to pull meaning from the whirling aether. I stepped away from the second game, as I was preparing nachos, but both games were memorable. The first had a new player slam military- and bolstered by nanotech, she just piled up her build stacks and knocked 'em down. The second had Megan generating an all-time high score shipping genes across the galaxy- we like to imagine genetic goods are not unlike racehorse stock, if you get my drift.

Jump Drive 4p ww x2

Oh lord how cruel these portals be
that give you naught but empty sea
and over there, the men do find
through eyeballs did they leave behind
--
I won once, with 50 exactly thanks to the cheap blue rush and a penultimate war propaganda (I know, it's my favourite!), but the second game was just a blow out, thanks to our friend with the eyeballs.

Quandary 3p x1

A sphincter clenches, a fist slams down
and boom! There's zeros, all around
Though we lead lives most blamelessly
In this, we're assholes constantly
--
From gallery of hanibalicious

I mean, really. This was a beautiful game- full of crazy wipeouts and insane scores. In the game right after this one, I scored a near perfect 35. And yet, the one who remained victorious was the one who, over three rounds, maintained second place. Not one to be tossed about by the vicissitudes of fate, his unrelenting steadiness brought him victory. Everyone involved loved it- it was a straight up hit.

Wettlauf nach El Dorado 4p x1

All your fancy telephones
biplanes, and cum-davy-jones
mean nothing at all
for you'll all surely fall
to the pioneer and his two fellow clones
--
I catapulted from 3rd to first on the hard map, thanks to lots of thinning, and treasure chest to pioneer conversions... and of course the watermelon chopper, which, to misquote Tetzel: A machete the watermelon splits/ a soul from the jungle thus remits.

Note, this is just ultrasound- not a delivery, that's hopefully in September:

 8   Hey, That's My Fish!

My wife and my son and I played a rousing game of TtR, in which I lost handily to my wife. She practices a lot on the digital app... yeah.. that's why she always beats me.. whistle

I got to play 7 Wonders with my kids at the Tabletop Club. We had 7 players this time, and it was great. I came in second by one point! The second game I was going to play we had a newcomer (our first female signatory!) so she joined in my place and they had a great time. It's been quite a hit since they can play with so many players and complete two games each time!

My son wanted to bust out Zombicide last Thursday, so we got it out, and it took us until Saturday to finish playing it. We played Mission 2, and it was a little disappointing. I suppose if we weren't playing with the Zombivor rules it would have been a bit more difficult, but I'm not sure how much. As it stood, we had 3 zombivors and 3 humans at the end. The way this one sets up put a lot of zombies into these fenced in areas that they can't really escape from unless an Abomination gets in there, which never happened. It was an interesting game though, and my son rekindled his love for the game, so that was great! He wanted to immediately set up the next scenario, but I unfortunately had to turn him down as the table doubles as my work station while grading.

We did, however, then try out Warfighter on Sunday. He actually enjoyed it, because it reminded him of Black Ops III, so that was pretty cool. We got our butts beat pretty badly, but it was a fun experience. I hadn't taken it out before, but I wish I had done so earlier. I'll definitely get some more plays of it in!

Finally, I got extremely lucky in Hey That's My Fish on Yucata and won that game against the fellow Gelati here. Thanks for taking it easy on me guys!

Online games of Talon, Pax Porfiriana, and El Grande continue. I am pretty intrigued by Pax and El Grande. I have no idea if I'm playing either one correctly, but I'm enjoying myself nonetheless.

Talon I have had trouble staying more consistent with since I have to log onto my laptop to play that one, and I am rather notorious about using my laptop ever since my last job where I would sit in front of computers all day for 12 hours a day. However, we have less than a month until our school year is over, so I'm looking forward to all kinds of gaming goodness!

Edit: I wanted to clarify that I don't actively avoid my laptop, it's more of a subconscious thing! I usually forget about my online gaming until I get in bed where I have my iPad, or Twilight Struggle on my phone, now that the Android version has been out for a while and works amazingly well on my phone. Vassal needs to go mobile!

I start my one summer class June 5th, and we have a short summer this year as they are adjusting the school year to end the first semester right before Christmas break instead of two weeks after (took them long enough), and I have a gig doing the internet for the convention again this summer, this time for 10 days instead of 4, so I'm excited about that. The pay is good, and ten days worth of pay is even better!

I am getting my final exams ready, getting grading done for my students' final research papers, and otherwise wrapping things up.

The end of the year sure hits fast. It reminds me of the idea that you have to do a reverse run with the motor on a boat to slow it down before you hit the dock. I feel like I'm going to hit that dock at full speed!

I hope everyone has a great week!

Kandinsky, beloved tabby cat, dies at age 9.

Kandinsky who started life as an aspiring catwalk model with his stunning good looks passed away peacefully at the Lincoln Animal Hospital on May 12, 2017 in the company of his loving service humans with the assistance of the caring staff and vets as a result of an unknown but intractable illness.

Kandinsky joined his service humans just shy of a year old in the fall 2008 from the Richmond Animal Protection Society along with Camille and provided much entertainment to the household with their endless games of chase cat.

Once used to his new home, he developed his late night singing repertoire to celebrate the capture of pipe cleaners and his favourite toy, a small catnip giraffe ball. He also enjoyed supervised leashed visits to the back yard where he could enjoy the sunshine and sitting in the grass.

Kandinsky distinguished himself among cats by staying close to his service humans, usually by occupying the morning newspaper and carefully inspecting the empty coffee cup at the breakfast table to ensure every last molecule of stray coffee cream that may have adhered to the inside of the mug was accounted for. He was also a championship calibre fireside napper, often tidily curled up with his tail over nose.

Kandinsky leaves behind his incorrigible feline BFF Camille, his three service humans, and Merry and Pippin the two guinea pigs.

In remembrance of Kandinsky and the joy of animal companionship brings to all service humans everywhere, skritch your beloved pets behind the ears and give them extra treats.

Yes, there is a Star Wars Qwirkle....

This is mostly an update from my surgery back on April 24th. The surgery went about 7.5 hours, a tad longer than the expected 6 hour window. On the plus side, my surgeon found after removing a lot of scar tissue in my lower abdominal area, that the muscles were in good shape and close enough to suture back together, which had the added benefit of getting rid of the hernia there.

Both he and his assistant were very pleased with the result of the surgery. Both said it exceeded their expectations and gave me some of the credit for being so prepared.

I came home a week after surgery (May 1st) and have been getting better every day. I am limited in some ways, I can't lift anything over 10 pounds, which means I can't pick up the cats as they both exceed that weight. I have to wear this "binder" around my torso so as not to tear at the incision as it heals. I have about five more weeks of that.

Most of the pain and discomfort are gone, though I can still feel it when I move about too much.

Thanks for all the well wishes and good thoughts, they were a boost for me.
