FIRST!

Started up Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (Xbox 360). Satire take on 80s action movies built on the Far Cry 3 engine. Lots of neon, Terminator 2 kind of music, and cliched dialogue. So far so good and fun - aside from the frustration of being forced to play for about a half hour or 45 mins before a save point. Had to play the first part twice because I had turned it off, and it restarted me back at the beginning.

I made some homemade thumb stick extenders - Someone on social media mentioned they were helpful with FPSs. Kind of weird to get used to. Not sure it's helping me all that much. or that I notice a difference.

2. Video Game: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years [Average Rating:4.80 Overall Rank:7238]
Video Game: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
For iPad Air (1) on iOS

After breaking Ascension* last week, we reached a certain milestone where we said to our self "that was fun, but it's also getting both too intense and boring". I'm not making any mistakes about it... I know I'm going to play more of it (especially when they release the next expansion, Gift Of The Elements? This was never announced, but I'm assuming since Playdek's been keeping steady exp. release schedule thus far for the 10 expansions + 5 promos worth of IAP).

Here, as we've already been continuing with Kain's tale (Sept. 3rd, Sun.) we shall endeavor to make more progress on that.

* 3p game with 140 honor instead of 90. ALL sets. There were 700 or so Portal cards left in the deck which I wanted to see if I could go through all of them. The game crashed AFAIK, the iPad Air (1)'s 1 GB of RAM isn't enough?

So our game now has us switching back to Kain again. He's about to enter Damycan castle, where king Edward resides...

Spoilers about how the tale unfolds from here...
Spoiler (click to reveal)
A lot of back and forth between Kain and Ceodore/Hooded Man

With Kain, it's pure cut scenes... threatening Edward and his Fire Crystal, and threatening to kidnap Rosa who just shows up, and he and her making their way to Baron via their own airship.

With Ceodore/Hooded Man, it's cut scenes and gameplay. However, gameplay is yet THE SAME PASSAGEWAY* that goes from Damcyan/Kaipo (that desert region), and heading north to Baron castle + Baron town/village, through a series a caves (you go overworld again halfway through for a small portion before having to head back into the caves again. Cid and his airship, Enterprise, meet up with the gang to pursue Kain and Rosa. Nice to have Cid in the group, for more variety again!

* I clearly remember this passageway from FFIV for SNES 20 years ago. However, this game actually had you go through this multiple times via multiple tales..

Spoilers on those tales
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Kain, Edward, Ceodore, and 1 or 2 others I think I'm forgetting. Seriously, it feels like half the FFIV TAY characters have passed through here.

Just Finished Kain's tale
Quite the cliffhanger indeed! In the virtual sense b/c:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
the gang....
From FFIV
Rosa - white mage of Baron
Kain - Dragoon of Baron
Edward - bard of Damycan and king
Cid - airship engineer of Baron

Ceodore - child of Rosa and Cecil

Intervene with Cecil (also from FFIV) and Mysterious Girl (antagonist of this game), and the tale literally ends there.

I guess 1 of the 2 remaining tales will pick up from there

Started Lumanarian's Tale
Spoiler (click to reveal)
So we're playing as Golbez. Without his fancy, prestige looking armor that he had in FFIV, nor this game's flashbacks (for his character model when walking around, nor his image during the combat screen), I didn't recognize him at first. His character model has him just walking around with work pants and no shirt. He's got strength that ranks below the melee fighters like Cecil, Ceodore, Kain, and he even seems to be weaker than Cid? (it takes him 3 to 4 hits to kill enemies that those others would only need 1 or 2) I initially thought that it's because I leveled them higher, but Golbez starts off at lv30, where as Ceodore's at lv31, with Kain at lv34. Then again, Golbez's physical attack may fare better if he can upgrade his weapon, and the potential is there if he levels up.

OTOH, he does start off with black magic... Fire, Ice, and Lightnings 1 through 3, and Bio. A bit annoying that the enemies with revealed stats don't carry over from one tale to another. Libra is a white magic spell, while that "Hemmingway Rabbit mobile item store" did NOT sell any Beastiary items. This means I need to draw from memory as to what elemental spells monsters are weak against.

Last but not least, there is VERY little combat thus far. No random encounters. I can count with one hand how many battle scenes I've had, and it's just 3. They only happen at specific "checkpoints". I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of combat, so in the meantime, it's nice to have free run of the moon dungeon I'm currently in. It's quite the opposite really, as in FFIV, you're going down, and have to deal with random encounters. If you're prepared, it shouldn't be an issue, but still a real threat then unless you're REALLY leveled up. (as a bonus annoyance, dying reverts you to the last save point, whereas here, you just hit continue without having to revert all the way from back then). Here, you're going up, you're relatively low level, by yourself (with you being a 1-person party), but very few monsters. Also, treasure chests contain no monsters.

I do hope FuSoYa wakes up from his sleep chamber, as that guy had both white and black magic, AND were proficient with them.

Iron Crypticle - I am determined to beat this twin stick shooter. Thankfully I am having fun with it, so that helps with my motivation.

Rocket League - My goal is to work on practice a bit more to get myself back in competitive shape. I am not there yet as there are glaring holes in my game.

PoE - My Sunder build refuses to plateau, it just keeps getting better and better. I am having a blast with this char.

Talisman - My quest to prevent Jan from winning is not going so well. I need to go back to tricking the game into thinking I am him.

PD2 - The road to infamy 25 continues. I have really been enjoying the new WWII weapons.

Started playing this and enjoy it tremendously. It's just goofy. From the black and white stick figures to the odd ball humor it's captivating.

Non-spoilery tips. Read books in the first bookcase a lot. You get a skill that is annoyingly hilarious. Don't do the goblin quest until after you visit the town's doctor and read her books. I did the goblin quest first. And now I'm restarting. Only a half hour in so no big deal on the restart.

I got a few of these games in a bundle or trade a while back and finally got around to starting the first one. I have liked it so far at around 9 hours in. The camera can be a little tough to wrangle with at times. It definitely wasn't made for a high DPI mouse. I have mine tuned down to 1200DPI and it still swings the camera like crazy.

I need to try to stick to the main quest when I get back to it this week. This game is loaded with side quests and I have been doing all of those and still haven't got any explanation as to what Rage is or how to use it. I end up with the same issue in open world games. I do all the side stuff and find out it would have been much easier if I followed the story a bit first and got the upgrades I was supposed to.

Besides King's Bounty. I will play a few more levels of War for the Overworld because it gives me pleasant memories of Dungeon Keeper. Paladins Dailies and Orcs Must Die dailies will get mixed in too.

Well, it took over a year, but Prison Architect is finally on sale for PS4!

Not sure waiting 12+ months was worth the $12 saved, but I started up the tutorial levels, which tell a little mobster story.

Have to say, I'm digging it. I'm looking forward to getting into the real game. And so happy you can pause the action.

The game was definitely designed for mouse, but the controller works quite well.

I attempted this in hopes I could finally learn how to play, but my tablet doesn't work for video games. It starts getting too hot. And with the 105F weather we had recently, no way.

So I got a refund from Steam on the way. And it looks like I'm going to donate the boardgame, since it just doesn't seem to get me yazzed about it.

Been plugging away at this, Career mode on Expert, got to the final stage somehow!

I won't be beating the game any time soon though. Partially because Cowboys from Hell is tough, but partially also because, erm... in light of recent events, I think it would be a bit insensitive and offensive to play a song called Texas Flood. I hope I haven't offended anyone, not least victims of the tragedy.

To return to more positive news, I've finally managed to accomplish something that had been eluding me. Check it out:
From gallery of Jackal2k

5 Gold Stars on Expert difficulty, baby! Yes! meeple

Except the song selection screen doesn't show 5 Gold Stars, because, this being the first in the series, it is basic. Seriously:
- 6 Stages instead of 8
- No detailed breakdown after completing a song
- All main songs are covers (even GH2 managed 2 master tracks)
- Only one multiplayer mode
- No Casey Lynch or Lars Ümlaüt
- Judy isn't a Punk
- No alternate outfits
- No Gold Stars
- No Encores
- No practice mode
- No differing money rewards based on difficulty
- You need to unlock things for each difficulty separately.

I'm still enjoying it, though. It has a sort of... rawness that I didn't find when I played a bit of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock a couple of weeks ago. For example - not sure how to explain this - but whilst playing the latter game I felt the camerawork showing the virtual band playing during a song a bit "forced", "fixed", "scripted"... it's more dynamic and random in the earlier games, and I prefer that. I think.

In other news:
- Been playing some Ratchet & Clank lately. Like with Guitar Hero, the original has a little bit of what TVTropes might call "Early Installment Weirdness". Only got to the Metropolis thus far.
- Played some In Pursuit of Greed, got past that damned fifth level. Now stuck on the seventh. shake At least I like the tune for the sixth!
- Completed Injustice: Gods Among Us recently. Sort of.
- Not much happening with Dark Cloud, The Sims 2 (Console), Justice League Heroes or any PSP games. I'm not much good at sticking with games to completion.

I'm back to the game I started a week or so ago--trying out the unofficial 1.5 patch for the first time.

I'm in a tough spot, I think. I started on Myrror, with the intention of keeping that plane to myself. But I wasn't able to block all the wizard towers (interplane elevators), so Horus took over a Myrran continent. Today I beat him back and took that continent over, but half the wizard towers are on that continent, and it was almost impossible to keep them all blocked. I finally managed to do it by stationing heroes there.

Horus was defeated, and my ally, Jafar, was defeated soon after. So now it's just Tauron and me. He has the whole Arcanus plane and is way ahead in army strength. I'm barely keeping him off the Myrran plane, scrambling all the time to do it. Just when I close off one tower, he pops up through another. I'm somewhat ahead in magic power, but he's got some devastating combat spells (e.g., Flame Strike).

I'm researching the Spell of Mastery, but it'll take me another 120 turns or so. Because of having had to run around defending towers, I haven't been able to capture all the nodes and lairs on Myrror. I don't have an army to spare.

I have the global spell Detect Magic going, and every time Tauron starts casting Great Wasting or Armageddon or some other devastating spell, I use Spell Blast to cancel it.

So, I'm holding my own, but I'm behind and not sure how to catch up. I may have to push an army through one of the towers and take the fight to Arcanus. Could be Tauron is weak somewhere there.

I'm liking the 1.5 patch, btw. Seems to have fixed all the bugs and annoyances without really changing the game. It's still MOM, only better.

The closed beta for RAID: World War II is currently open to anyone owning Payday 2, so on Sunday I downloaded the beta, fired it up and played through the tutorial and one of the missions - Destroying an airship.

The gameplay is similar in many ways to PD2, but there are a few differences and it's enough to make it a little disorientating. I also came across a bug whereby I couldn't place gas cans to set fire to a bunker.. possibly because I had already grenaded the bunker, so there was no-one left alive inside to open the door! I restarted the level and all was fine.

I almost got to play with Jan, but given how laggy his game had been, he decided against it.

One change that did frustrate me a little was having to press a key to pick up ammo drops, instead of just walking over it to hoover it up! Tricky, since the faint glow of a dropped ammo box was often hard to see.

Finally, I'm wondering at what point in WW2 they invented laser sights, as I really miss them!!!

14. Video Game: Tomb of the Mask [Average Rating:0.00 Unranked]
From gallery of BoardGameGeek
For Android

The Stage Based mode is where it's at... I hear there are 65 levels here. Avoid obstacles, and reach the exit. Collect all dots and stars to say you "100% the level"*. This is a throwback to traditional video gaming. However...
There IS an energy gauge/meter that restricts how often you can play this mode. When you die in Stage Based mode, you lose one of these, so it's more like "extra lives" in the traditional sense. It gets restored by one for every 30 minutes, up to 5. A bit disappointing that you can't spend real money or coins (in-game currency) to at least speed this up.
OTOH
--because it regens by real time, this ends up NOT costing ANY real game money nor (in-game) coins.
--this mode's easy enough that it hasn't been a hindrance thus far
--Arcade mode is free to play as much as you please, so this energy meter doesn't apply there

Arcade mode is basically endless. Levels are procedurally generated so it's different enough each time you fire it up.

The missions are bite-sized and fun (basically, the game's own achievements, but these earn you extra coins, not mention providing more variety with the game itself) ways to get more coins. Stuff like get 15 Stars, get 5,000 dots, get 1,000 pts in Arcade in one run, play the Wheel Of Fortune 20 times, or play Arcade 20 times. The list displays 3 that you can work on at one time.

* Coins also add to the game's currency, used to Spin the wheel of fortune, continue with certain levels (limited though per level), and buy different powers ups and masks (have some in-game changes like +20% chance of more coins).

There's a shop where you can buy coins with real money, different masks, turn off ads for $1, and double coins for $5. I'm told that both are either meaningless or ripoffs, as there aren't really any ads forced on you (except watching ads for stuff that you choose to do), and the coin doubler either doesn't work, or was implemented that you get less coins available, making it a wash.

Despite that, this game still deserves a full, 5-star rating.

UPDATE 9/5: I'm blazing through the game! It's fun! meeple I'm currently on level 135. It turns out, the dev has expanded beyond the 65 levels from that piece I read online. After all of the levels in Stage Mode are finished, do a few more Arcades, I've "bookmarked" a few levels I'd like to retry, and put this to rest until it gets more levels.
It sucks to revolve around the schedule of when the lightning bolts recharge (energy meter in the form of lives), but the game does give you the option to refill all 5 immediately with 1,000 coins.

UPDATE2: Completed!

I installed this on a laptop and ended up playing it for hours. It's so addictive. There are so many more star systems and little side quests with some small bit of story than there used to be. I'm nearly to St. Kat's system now, though there are a couple systems full of activities I want to go back and finish before I head out of commonwealth space.

I also got a bit farther in Mirror's Edge: Catalyst and Sonic Mania.

This game has left Early Access and is now finished, so I've been playing it again. I really like this game; it's basically a roguelike Mega Man X game. Both characters (X and Zero Nina and Ace) are fun to play. Last time I played, I got to the final level before dying. I got enough soul chips on that run that I bought a permanent chest unlock that gives a random armor upgrade at the start of each run.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed the Mega Man X games.

Back to this, since I finished Master of Magic. For all my complaints, Civ is still a very pleasant and halfway interesting game to play.

This time I chose Prince level so I could cruise along. My random leader ended up being Askia of the Songhai. The random map turned out to be an archipelago. I've managed to settle a nice arc of islands and get into the lead.

The other players--Spain, Persia, and the Ottomans--have been amazingly peaceful and friendly. And I'm finding it easy to make city-state allies too. There's a little religious conflict, and there have been a few spying incidents, but that's it. Otherwise, smooth sailing.

Just built the World Fair, so I've saved and am off to bed.

I've gotten into the Dungeon Past the Shrine of Pain, my Human Knight, Minotaur Fighter, Insectoid Wizard and Reptilian Rogue are all doing pretty well so far, and all around level 5. While I've got a lot more of this game to explore, and I'm proud to say I haven't had to seek outside help for any of the puzzles, yet. Though "Follow the Light" gave me a bit of a hard time, probably because I was really tired when I was solving it.

I also played evergreen favorites, Payday 2 with the Geek's own Matt and Rudy and Ancient Domains of Mystery; Queen Kong died a tragic death at the hands of the Chaos Archmage in the Mana Temple and now I've got a very promising Mindcrafter started!

Had been thinking about Elite: Dangerous, and remembered that I hadn't ever gotten too far with this particular game. So I hopped into my ship and started blowing people away again, and you know what, it's really fun to do. I upgraded to some Mk 3 and 4 stuff now, as I finally got out of the original star system.

I mentioned in a previous post that two friends and I are trying to play through games that we never completed as kids, but always wanted to.

We made it to what i assume is the final boss. And we've died three times trying to beat her. I know there is some trick to it. But we can't seem to figure it out. We're going to try a couple more times before we look it up.

After that we need to find a new game. What made this fun for us is having one person draw a map. Even with the map we still missed the spring ball...

I suggested Shining in the Darkness because that one needs a map drawer as well. We'll see i guess.

I started this up in the last week or so. At first, I was really excited. That's been tempered somewhat by finding that the XP system can make the game into a bit of a slog. XP gained from a given foe diminishes as you gain levels. Right now I'm fighting foes that are not trivial to beat, but they don't give out XP to speak of, which makes fighting them thankless and a little tedious. Otherwise, though, there's a lot I like about the game.

Thanks to a generous VGGeek, I played through the tutorial in this game the other day. I'll probably cycle back and play more of it soon.

Funny--the game reminds me of another gift from a VGGeek: SpaceChem. And both games call to mind a vague memory of Laser Squad Nemesis (though I think I only played a brief demo of it). They're all games that require some advance thinking and planning.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall Combat Mission being like that. I only played a demo of that too, but IIRC you give orders for the next short period of time, then click "go" and watch what happens.

This type of game will take some getting used to. I also have a big one I've been procrastinating on: Civil War II. It's another where you give all your orders, then click "next turn" and wait for the results.

It's a different way of thinking.

I've played through the tutorial--twice, I think--and then stopped. Maybe I should just go with it awhile and see how it lands with me. I kinda wish the tutorial were longer. As it is, I'm left supposing there will be a lot of trial-and-error involved. I generally dislike learning that way.

Playing tons of this - epic game even by Persona standards.

It's been a while since I've played P3:FES and P4, but I'm fairly confident that Persona 5 has the most flexibility in the fusion and development of Persona, which in turn has a big impact on how much you can optimize your team for battle. It's a far more 'breakable' game, which I like, but which other players may feel goes too far, or allows the player to spend too much time gaming out advantages. Similarly, maxing out your confidants ("social links" in previous games) gives out a wide range of meaningful perks, and the process of ranking up is itself subject to greater optimization than it was in the past.

External image

All very fun for me, but I've just entered the 5th Palace, and I'm obliterating everything I come across. It almost feels like P3:FES felt on New Game+... except that this is my initial playthrough.

Anyway, this is turning out to be one of my favorite PS4 games - definitely Top 5 for the console library. In terms of gameplay and presentation, it is a tour de force and the best Persona game to date. The cast of characters is slightly weaker than the last two games. But, the overall themes, once they develop a little, are well conveyed and stand out a bit from the last two games in ways that feel appropriate for this generation.

I've gone back to an old favourite with CIV:BE RT. I picked a Random Civ, Random Map, Random bonus,on Epic speed. I chose a 4 player map but just put myself and 2 AI's on it. We'll see how it goes. I've had a few skirmishes with my nearest neighbour and became fast friends with the other Civ. I am not doing pretty well, but I need to expand to get more income etc. so I can conduct a proper war.
