This past week was Essen. So, since we didn't talk about it on James' list, I thought we could talk all about it (and conventions) this week.

1. Are there any games that released this Essen that you're excited about?

2. Did any of the Essen coverage talk you out of any games?

Do you ever combine board game conventions and your regular vacations together (for example, a vacation to europe + Essen)?

For those of you who have not been to any conventions, what 1 convention do you wish you could attend?

For those of you who have been to conventions, what is your happiest/best/favorite experience?

Are there any games that you feel do particularly well in a convention setting (compared to your regular setting)?

What is one game that you love but you would never play in a convention setting?

Today is Halloween! Do you celebrate? If so, what is your favorite part about the holiday? Bonus for any pictures of you in costume for this year (or past years you are proud of).

Here are a few questions about designers:

1. Who is your favorite "one-hit-wonder" board game designer?

2. Who is the best "consistently great" game designer?

3. Who is the next up and coming designer?

Suggest me a Top 5 for this week

Top 5 things to do at a convention (besides gaming!)

1. Walk the exhibit halls. The first time I attended GenCon I spent most of my time walking through the vendor hall going to every single booth. Almost every booth had a different way of presenting their products, and that was almost more interesting to me than some of the actual games. Also, you can find that set of jade dice you've always wanted!

2. Work a booth The best decision I made at my first GenCon was to set aside time to work Bezier Games' booth. I'd never met a proper board game designer before, and Ted Alspach was a great person to work with. Teaching ONUW to dozens of people was great fun, and it gave me a purpose for the day, which was also helpful since I had not booked any events.

3. Check out the cosplay I'm not one to dress up for conventions, but I did enjoy others' costumes. Some of them are incredibly intricate and creations of their own, while others are standards. The one I got the most laughs out of was Surfer Boba Fett.

4. Find a deal You can't go home without buying a game or two. I'm not much into buying the latest and greatest games that 'may' be the next Agricola, but snagging a $25 copy of Goa or attending auctions for rare 1st edition D&D modules is one of the best parts of conventions.

5. Meet up with internet friends The #1 reason I go to conventions is because other friends are going. If I wanted to play games all weekend then I could host a party at my house. If I wanted tons of new euros I could just place an order at CoolStuffInc. However, I can't meet up with dozens of people I know from around the country at the same time anywhere else. I've met about half of my other GCL at conventions, and several redditors as well. At GenCon in particular it was difficult to walk for more than 5 minutes without being stopped by someone I knew.

Imperial Settlers -- I suck at being the Romans, apparently. I lost to the new guy player Barbarians but not a small margin. Ooph. I didn't draw into my administrations and other powerful roman cards until late game, and I don't know this empire well enough to play around it otherwise. This game is still wonderful, though. I love the card-driven tableau building, and this one manages to do player interactions being both hurtful and helpful simultaneously.

Ethnos -- I don't know how to feel about this game yet. We played with 6 people, and I didn't hate it, so it has that going for it. On the other hand, I wasn't blown away with the game either. I'd be interested in trying this with someone's cultivated list of races. Some, like the Trolls, were hugely powerful, while others (Skeletons) were simply neat.

Hansa Teutonica -- I played with someone who took several minutes on each turn. What should have been an <2 hour game turned into almost 3. It was bad. I decided to build the office in Gottingen (action city) and grab points from that. I followed up building that office with claiming the Office-Swap bonus token, so I was able to hold on to that the entire game and grab something like 10 points from it. Otherwise, I just poked around and got in peoples' way and upgrading skills.

On My Mind:
I went to Grand Rapids this weekend for a "beercation" with a cousin. Lots of great beer, and I was able to introduce them to Werewords too.

I kegged my cider from a few weeks ago. Now I just have to wait a few days and it will be nice and carbonated. The o.g. was 1.057 and the fg .998, so using an online calculator that puts it about 7.5%. I expected the abv to be that high, since tasting the cider it was almost undrinkably sweet before fermenting. I was worried that the cider wouldn't have much flavor, but the fermenting brought out a lot of good tart notes. I bought the tubes and manifolds for 2 kegs, so eventually I'll just have to decide what to brew next.

It's been in the 40s this week, which meant that I finally decided to turn on the heat in the house. Well, I would have turned on the heat, except that the furnace won't turn on. I have a technician coming out today, but for the past few days my house thermostat has been hovering about 49 degrees. Luckily, I have a fireplace and a space heater, which have helped.

On Monday I broke out A Feast for Odin for my first solo play. I started setting the game up around 8, but 9:45 I had only played through one round and had to get ready for bed. There were TOO MANY options. I need to do some reading on the 60 some odd whatever spaces I can choose from before I play again.

Wednesday I didn't go to be regular meetup, but went to a charity event a friend was running. I did bring games because that's what I do. We played Bananagrams and Shh!. The brewery we were at had a few games so we played Brewmaster also. It was an interesting little set collection game.

Thursday was board game lunch day at work we played Ascension with the Return of the Fallen expansion. I hadn't played Ascension in well over a year. It was nice to break it out, but I didn't get the same enjoyment out of it that I used to. Not sure if it was because we were only playing 2 player or if I just don't care as much about this particular game.

Friday a buddy randomly came over after work. We played Legendary Encounters: Alien which is one of my boyfriend's favorites. We wanted to play with the expansion, but hadn't sleeved the cards yet. So that'll have to wait. We also played Lords of Waterdeep with the Undermountain expansion. Waterdeep is one of my favorites so it was super nice to get it to the table.

Saturday my neighbor's husband went to a buddy's place to play Descent so she came over for a game of Parfum. Which is another one I haven't played in well over a year, but this one definitely made me feel good.

That was kind of a lot of days of gaming for me! It was nice. This coming weekend is our 24-hour Extra Life event. I won't be doing the full 24-hours. I'll be a special guest in a D&D campaign and hopefully get some good gaming in before I have to crash.

On My Mind
- Dr's appointment this afternoon has had me freaked out for a while now. Hoping all goes well.
- Super looking forward to taking the kiddo out for her first Trick or Treat, but it's going to be cold so we'll probably only hit a few houses.
- I just updated my spreadsheet with all my October plays. 286 total games for the year, 177 unique. My most played games for the year so far are Barenpark (6), Bruges (6), and Sagrada (12).

Skull
- I usually don't win at skull, I go to risky and die, but this is my second time winning. yay!

Magic Maze - Even more magic maze! I brought this game and someone else brought it so we all played together. Introduced to 3 new people. I think one person was feeling the abuse of the "Do Something" token a bit much. But near the end they picked up the game and got to use it on other people (me) and really seemed to be enjoying it. Fairly certain they will pickup a copy.

Insider - Solid plays we did lose 2 outright though because the insider didn't want to give themselves away.

Kingdom zombie : goo Really crazy randomness happening. It is both great and terrible, happiness and sadness, the dice gods giveth and the dice gods taketh away. I still enjoy it somehow. Maybe because I like playing with matching armor sets so much.

Yokohama - I've been waiting to play this for a long time. I missed the kickstarter deluxe but played someone else's copy and it was amazing. components are great and I really liked the making chains-of-people to fly across the board. Game featured a lot of me saying "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" even on other people's turns. Great Stuff.

Innovation
No idea what was happening. But it happened quickly.

Gloomhaven - Still solid. I was demoing this for a friend that was interested in it. Unfortunately they didn't enjoy the mechanism of losing cards. But I still had a blast. Cragheart!

Arcadia Quest - I don't like that someone got to draft Diva before me but other than that I've been having fun. It's silly and I think being able to chain critical hits for all eternity leads to some hilarious situations.

On my Mind - Went to a corn maze this weekend with a friend I hadn't seen since high school. It was a bit odd in that I really just wanted to play board games instead of driving an hour to walk in a corn maze. The maze had little posts so you knew whether to turn left or right. At one point I think I mentioned to my friend this maze doesn't have as many interesting choices or player agency. He didn't find it as hilarious as I did. Other than that we had a great time catching up. He didn't want to play board games though. cry

I was checking my local coffee roaster and they have Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee at $78 a pound. I kinda want to try it but I know the whole time I'll be thinking "Is this coffee worth $78 a pound?"

I usually don't dress up for Halloween since I feel I would much rather make a costume than buy one. And I don't know how to make costumes. I also don't know what I'd want to do as a costume. I'm already thinking of ideas I will bail on for next year I guess.

No games for me this week. Spent a lot of the first half of the week fighting off a cold. Spent the next half taking care of my wife who somehow caught a cold from some jerk.

OMM

I’m currently getting in full Star Wars mode. While sick, I finished watching Episode V again, went into Episode VI and VII. Then watched Rogue One (Which really isn’t holding up to be as good with repeated viewings.) I got through the first season of Star Wars Rebels, and finally got around to visiting the Aftermath trilogy again, plowing through Aftermath: Life Debt. That ended up being a MUCH. MUCH better book than its predecessor. While arc of the perspective characters aren’t as intriguing in Life Debt as they were in Aftermath, the execution of everything is just so much better and coherent. And the overarching story was much more fulfilling. The Imperial Story Arc is enjoyable, and I’ve already started Empire’s End and can see myself reading many moreStar Wars books now.

I’m also glad Star Wars is getting more of a “religious” focus that I feel was very lost from the prequels. (Where the religion in there was more dogmatic and rigid, and not doctrinal. It lacked elements of faith, which is a great return into Star Wars.

It gives it more of that “fantasy/magic/mysticism” vibe that disappeared with everything feeling more regimented and dogmatic. Having cults, artifacts, conflicts of faith, and many other things really brings in a freshness, and gives characters unpredictable motivations. Having people act in faith and belief, despite having no connection to the force makes everything feel so much more soaked with lore and history.

It’s also nice to go through and have the familiar characters, like Leia, not be so perfect, and be a bit... foolish.

 9   Arcadia Quest x3 NEW!

One Friday night, I hosted my college friends to get an "impromptu Halloween party" going. There was beer, $5 Halloween themed cupcakes from my local Safeway, and a cheese platter. My intent was to get a game of Fury of Dracula in.

Didn't happen.

Instead, we played:

EXIT: The Abandoned Cabin -- There were a handful of times where we had some neat "ah-ha" moments, but for the most part it felt like we were slogging through and stubbornly trying to think of the solution. It was part thrilling, part frustrating, and overall just okay.

Magic Maze -- We played the scenarios where we added the crystal ball, and the little tunnel that the dwarf can walk through. I thought that "Relationship Ender" reddit thread yesterday was topical, because my friend mentioned how much she HATED the thing. They love using it on me, so I deserve it.

So just two games on Friday night, on Saturday, I met up with some friends (including Mr. Necroblaster) to get some more games in.

Innovation -- 2p, and both of our first plays. It's so random, and chaotic, and I had no idea what was going on. I like it, though. For one, my win wasn't satisfying because I sort of fell ass-backwards into it. Secondly, it was kind of neat trying to do the best-thing each turn, whether it was to get a billion cards, a billion points, or tech up super fast.

Gloomhaven -- We had a 4p random scenario, just to demo it. My friend hated it, I fell in love with it.

He mentioned how much didn't enjoy the hand-management, in which every time you have to pick your discard pile, the game forces you to either randomly discard a card or choose one and do nothing.

I think this forced constraint is what makes the game interesting. You have to risk losing an important card if you want to keep fighting, or risk either running out of time, or eating a bunch of damage by doing NOTHING, but you get to choose what you lose. In practice, this makes the game brutally difficult, since you don't know whether an important card or combo will still be available to you later.

It feels thematic, too, since you're getting more exhausted as you dive deeper in the dungeon. And since this constraint already makes the game difficult, I can only imagine how satisfying and fulfilling it must be to complete a scenario, get some money, and level up your little duder. I think it's genius.

Yokohama -- 4p, first play. It's a euro game for sure, where you have to manage a bunch of resources, and you're racing to be first on X track, or complete X contract. It's good! It's interesting.

I can see the Istanbul comparisons, but they don't play or feel at all similar. The only thing they share is the modular board, and how the movement mechanisms are slightly similar. Yokohama is the deeper, more fulfilling design. Istanbul is lighter, a bit on the shallow end, but serves it's purpose well as a good gateway, that plays well at all counts. Yokohama plays very tactical at 4p, and the blocking becomes much more of an issue.

Arcadia Quest -- 2p, we ran through three scenarios at my house to end the night. The first one, we took like 15 minutes as I got completely rocked. I ended with like, 2 dollars.

But by the second scenario, I had some good roll swings to complete my objective faster. So I was able to get a ton of cash at the end, and catch up a bit with my people. I got a hammer that hits people in the face for more damage. Pretty great.

Third scenario, I lost, but I think it was a lot closer than the scores would indicate. It was hard fought, but ultimately he was in a better position to kill the giant troll. I did focus on grabbing cash, so I had a bunch of money to still keep up with upgrades.

I'm loving it a lot. I think it's my favorite Ameritrash game. It's just a ton of fun rolling a bunch of dice and seeing what happens.

Other than a couple small games with our friend (who left on Tuesday), it was a For-Ex week. Played a couple more times, and felt that the resolve contract action was weak, since you forgo any other (better) action in order to move the game along, and it opens up a contract spot for the player to your left. We heard similar thoughts from other play groups, so we tried house-ruling the action last night to allow you to make a contract when you resolve one. I think that helped a lot with the game pace (no more stalling).

On My Mind
Happy Halloween!!

   Dracula's Feast NEW!

Not a lot of plays last week. Dracula's Feast was an interesting idea, and I'd like to play it more, but I suspect that my rating will go down over time. Many of the roles have their own win conditions, and I think they are a little unbalanced. Still, I really like the balance between logical deduction and bluffing in the game, so I'm hoping it will surprise me.

Concordia is great. Everyone knows it. Not a lot to say about it. This particular play had an AP player (who was a little tipsy to boot), so it went a good bit longer than I would have liked, but I was still engaged and looking forward to my turns throughout.

On My Mind

I have to get my house ready for preventative subterranean termite treatment this week, which means moving all of my furniture 2 to 3 feet away from every wall. It's not a fun exercise.

I'm almost finished with book 2 of the final Fitz trilogy from Robin Hobb. I love these characters, and that love and the story has been enough to carry me through, but I am getting tired of how often the storytelling relies on her characters being uncharacteristically stupid.

My wife and I recently signed up for MoviePass, just in time for a month that will include Murder on the Orient Express, Thor: Ragnarok, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. I have friends who use it, and it seems like a great deal. We'll see how it goes.

Little bit late on this because I didn't get much played last week beside a solo game of Arkham Horror. Missed my game night due to work stuff and bought a Nintendo Switch... so Zelda... and Mario.

OMM: The holidays are quickly approaching. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then we're going to blow into 2018. Yikes.

Net Neutrality is likely to be removed soon. I don't see an immediate impact, but I can't imagine what it will be like for my kids as they get older.
