Ho ho ho!

My Secret Gelato selected some fine flavours for me. My daughter in particular loves Captain Sonar, and she will be absolutely over the moon that this is now in my game collection.

But wait, there's more...

As if Captain Sonar was not enough, my Secret Gelato also sent...

My promise to open any Secret Santa box I got before Christmas was tested today when a big box arrived. So, I opened it. There was never any doubt.

Board Game: Municipium

Board Game: Bargain Hunter

Board Game: Bugs

(Actually, two copies of Bugs; I'm guessing you can put the decks together for a bigger game).

And Liberté, which I have played once and thought was outstanding. Martin Wallace makes good weuros.

So - thanks Secret Santa!

Edit: Oh, the joys of Sunday delivery! I was pleasantly surprised to have a ring at the door and find a box from GMT. Wasn't sure what it was, but I opened it and thought "When did GMT start gift-wrapping their games?" Undeterred by the fact that it's eight days to Christmas, I very very carefully opened the wrap (trying to dislodge as little glitter as possible). When what to my wondering eyes should appear but - Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain! Awesome - thank you Gelato Claus; I was getting ready to order this for myself...

The expansion for Quadropolis (one of mine and wife's favourites, mostly because she wins half of the time) and the revised edition of Machi Koro arrived a couple of days ago. We played Q:PS yesterday and it makes a big difference- we both like it a lot.

Dear Secret Santa,

I received an envelope yesterday - I assumed one of my magazines, or something from the Geekstore? I admit, I opened it. Before Christmas.

It came as a total surprise!

This is totally awesome and the best gift I received in years! The perfect gift for a Beatles and a Star Wars fanboy! Fantastic! I'll frame the picture and the coasters are already in use!

Thank you so much!!!

Well... ...I am the proud recipient of the best Secret Santa gift I have ever received in my life.

Not only did Santa carefully comb through my wishlist to choose a rare game that was exceptionally high on my list, he found and sent two games high on my list:

From gallery of grammatoncleric
From gallery of grammatoncleric

I missed the boat on ordering 1880: China twice in a row, so to open the box and see this one totally delighted me. And notice the inscription on the front of the box from Lonny Orgler!

(It's almost as if Herr Secret Santa has a direct connection with the designers/publisher of this wonderful 18xx title!)

And then there's The Guns of Gettyburg. I love Simmons Games, and for some reason never picked this up. I'm thrilled to have this one, too.

To have not just one but two gifts sent to me—and candidly, for Santa to go to all the trouble of picking 1880 directly from Austria* tells me that he spared no expense in reindeer fuel to get this one to me. I was actually floored when I saw the shipping weight noted as 3.56 kg. It was a princely sum to spend to send both of these.

*Various governments' customs agencies take some of the surprise out of Secret Santa-ing, but not the fun!

Herzlichen Dank, Santa!

An unexpected delivery over lunch on a Saturday: quite unprecedented, unless we're close to the holidays and vectors and post offices work one extra day per week. So, when someone rang my doorbell, I was torn: it could have been a salesman pretending to sell me a new version of a microscopic washing machine (I've read an article about it, fully loaded it manages to wash a pair of socks, but you can have it in your purse for any unexpected need), OR it could have been Santa.

The possibility of Santa made me giggle and I decided to open and risk the salesman arriving and yay, no salesman but an Elf, carrying a mysterious parcel! My Secret Gelato told me something might have arrived between Friday, 15th, and Wed, 27th, so, I'd say Elves here made the run in quite the shortest time!

So... time to hold the parcel dear

From gallery of Scarlet Witch

pondering a bit about what could have been on the inside (a ton of micro-washing machines! No way, mr/mrs Secret Gelato is certainly a connoisseur in games!). Then I remembered I was given permission to open it, so...

*finds cutter*

*incision*

And...

*drum roll*

It's a game that I've been wanting for so long!! I tried to buy it a couple of times in the last few years, but for a reason or another, it never made its way to my vault. Until now!!!!

From gallery of Scarlet Witch

HAPPY!!!!

And...

Secret Gelato tells there's a Wave 2 coming at a later time. Secret Gelatos are the best!!!

(and yeah, I'll edit and post pictures once it arrives, no worries folks!)

Thank you again!!!

The Advent of Wave II

A few days ago the second parcel landed in! Super-excited, I opened it while Andrea was away from work, so, sadly, no "live pictures" of the opening, but at least I can report on the content

Soooo... you must know that I'm a total sucker for promos (and possibly a bit OCD for completionism of some series whistle ), and Santa hit in the right spot here because there were two promos for two games I like quite a lot and were played a ton So, I've got:

- Roll for the Galaxy: Bountiful Gaming Grid Promo Tile
- Sagrada: Promo 4 – BoardGameGeek Window Pattern Card

a lovely letter, a postcard and a delightful dice pouch shaped like a dragon egg (I've heard Daenerys protest my pouch's cooler than her dragon eggs! And it's way cooler, let me tell you *evil laughter*)

Thank you Secret Gelato kiss

(and sorry for the very late post, been sick the whole week)

While I was off playing Santa at the local Mall... Something I never thought I would hear myself say, "Hi, I'm a Mall Santa"... A package arrived with games from my GCL Secret Santa.

WOWZERS Santa! you hit it out of the park with these games.

First up was Secret Hitler, a game I didn't think I would like, until Roger convinced me to play. Needless to say, it ended up on my wishlist and with that, one of three games from GCL Secret Santa.

Next was Camel Up, a game I heard about, but until I got to play, didn't think about picking up a copy. By then, the first run or two were out of stock and so this was a wonderful surprise. In fact, I so liked the game, that I went ahead and bought the Camel Up: Supercup expansion, figuring I'd eventually get a copy of the game. Well done!

And, adding to the bounty was a copy of Codenames: Duet. I do like Codenames immensely and this gives me more opportunities to play.

Many thanks GCL Secret Santa, you went above and beyond and I cannot thank you enough.

It's been a rough week.
I had in-laws staying over and there was a problem with the toilet in the downstairs bathroom, so they had to come upstairs all the time.
Not a big deal except that after the plumber fixed a faulty backwater valve-- which involved a second 3 hour visit where they had to break apart the concrete floor to get access to the pipe-- I was left with an almost $2,000 bill.
Next day, I go into the laundry room and there is a pool of water near the washer, which is displaying a digital error code read-out.
My wife reads the manual and sees that it is a faulty water sensor. Now I need to get that fixed.

At work, my forklift starts acting sluggish. Like the emergency brake is partly on. A call to the repair place means an on-site visit from a tech who gets it moving again, but there is fluid on the floor and we suspect a brake cylinder is leaking.
Next day I arrange for them to take it to their shop. NOt just leaking, but cracked and in need of replacement.
Not only will I not have the forklift for 10 days, while the parts come in, that's another $1,600 brake repair (plus the earlier service call).
soblue

So that's enough griping, for one list item, I feel.

When I arrived home yesterday evening, there was a large carton on the dining room table for me.
My Secret Gelato present has arrived!!

Everything is joy and disbelief from this point of the tale onward.
Either the exchange rate to Canadian dollars is extremely favorable or Secret Gelato Santa didn't get the memo about the suggested cost value.
Because, inside the carton, there were not one, not two, but three new games from my wishlist!!
And they are beauties.

The most impressive one is Junk Art, which is going to be a huge hit on Christmas Day when we visit family for a big meal and get-together.
After removing the cardboard, there is a very impressive wooden box, with proper carpentry corner joints, and a sliding lid that reveals the caches inside to hold all of the pieces.
This is a gorgeous item, and the production values are sky-high.

Then, within my family, I have three people who I will now be able to enjoy an intriguing new game with; Kanagawa.
Co-designed by Bruno Cathala, this game about Japanese Art looks to be a real stunner, visually and thematically. I can't wait!

Finally, a smaller box that is Unreal Estate.
This is going to work great with my regular game group since it is compact and easy to play, and there is plenty of interaction available.
My guess is that it will be the first one to be played.
Quel surprise!

Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, Gelato Santa!
You've helped me to forget my plumbing problems and my work woes.
Your generosity fills me with gratitude.
Bless you!!

My Santa has been teasing me with stories of elves heading down to Colorado, getting lost, caught up in some funny adventures, and finding their ways back to the North Pole, but without finishing their jobs. Silly elves!

Well today a package arrived! Santa had mentioned that they might pop down to Canada to send off a package, and he/she was true to their word! I avoided looking at the customs label and got to opening the package!

From gallery of Lil Red Head

From gallery of Lil Red Head

There was a lovely card and some goodies! More on the card in a moment.

From gallery of Lil Red Head

That's a bag of gluten free Amaretti cookies! Santa says that they washed the bowls and measuring cups before starting so they're very Nikki-safe! And they included the recipe so I can make them for myself anytime of the year! And oh yes, they are *very* yummy, mmmmm!

From gallery of Lil Red Head

And yes, games! I have the Brettspiel Adventskalender, and this was like that, but all for things I know I have or want!

So...in the card Santa mentioned that hopefully this package is as welcome as the main one was. Hmmm... I have not yet seen the main one! Uh oh! Also, I have Notre Dame and San Juan, but not Puerto Rico...I wonder what might have been in the main package...(hee hee).

So thank you Secret Santa and I'll be on the lookout for another package!

Update: 12/24/17

Dave of Time Well Spent filled in as local elf, delivering a trio of beautifully wrapped packages last week. We've been back to back busy, but I finally got a chance to open the presents last night.

From gallery of Lil Red Head

Three lovely presents. I wonder what's inside?

From gallery of Lil Red Head

I started with the smallest. I figured it was some set of cards, but what game?

From gallery of Lil Red Head

It's Coloretto! A nice solid 7 ranking on the geek; I'm looking forward to having this in our game library to share with other people.

From gallery of Lil Red Head

Next was a box that made noises as if something was able to slide around inside. I guessed that it might be a game with cards as well. Yup! It's Kodama: The Tree Spirits! This game is super adorable and I'm really looking forward to getting to try it some more in the comfort of my own home.

From gallery of Lil Red Head

That left one more. Heavy, small-ish, and not a lot of noise when I shook it (gently). I opened it up and found Kanagawa. I'm not familiar with it, but it looks very pretty from the outside. I'm looking forward to trying this out too.

From gallery of Lil Red Head

I'm looking forward to hopefully getting in with the new games sometime before we leave on Friday. Between the new games and awesome expansions, I feel well loved by my Gelato Santa, and I think my Santa had a good time too, hurray!

I hope everyone had a great time with this Secret Santa exchange!

Two days ago I ordered some comic books and the expected delivery date was yesterday. I really wondered why they sent two parcels ... well, amazon. They sometimes do this. Both parcels were pretty heavy, so maybe that was the explanation.

I opened the first one ... and I was totally surprised!!! Look what was in there ... no comics at all!!!

From gallery of PzVIE

It looks like Santa doesn't really live in Rovaniemi, Finland, but in Las Vegas, USA! meeple

And also, I noticed the totally insane postage fees on the customs declaration ... zombie ... oh boy! But everything was perfectly and safely packed, the T-shirt I'm wearing did also great to protect all the stuff that was inside (and Santa does even know exactly my size - wow!).

And original casino chips, cards, and dice. What a great gift for a gamer! I'm totally happy! Thank you so much!!! And Janice will surely pop up in our next game of Star Trek: Five-Year Mission.

Just in time for Christmas!

I received a package from my Gelato Santa all the way from Australia. It included two mini games, Cycling and Football.

I've never played them, though I feel like I've heard of them from somewhere in the Gelato threads. ninja

They look very interesting, especially the cycling one, and it plays solo in less than an hour!

Happy Holidays!

Thanks Santa!

Edit: wow, so many gifts from all over the world!

I received a package from Spain today from Nestor Games with two games I've wanted, and three I'm sure I'm going to love:

Penguin Soccer by our very own Avri
Tetrarchia by a long time fellow contributor on the Commands and Colors boards that I've had on my wish list since it was designed.

And three new games to me:
Siege Master
Sleepers
Myrmidons

These are my first Nestor Games, but they look like a lot of fun! I can't wait to try them.

I'm sorry I missed learning Penguin Soccer from Avri at Bggcon!

Thank you Secret Gelato Santa!!
