Welcome to
Solitaire Games On Your Table
December 2017

Home of "Together, We Game Alone"

Hello, and welcome to another month of exciting times with solo games! Feel free to participate in any way you like: Post about the solo games that you play, share your latest solo design or variant, comment on entries that strike your fancy, and join in. This is a very friendly group, and we happily welcome aboard every type of solo gamer!

Guidelines

1 Play a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.
2 Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it. Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags:

1 Add the <summary></summary> tag to include a short overview. All summaries are recorded, as on my overview page.
2 Add the <rating></rating> tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0. Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded, as on my ratings page.

3 Be nice, but most of all have fun!
4 See something you like? Give it a thumb.
5 See something you think is amazing? Give out some !

It's extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some thumbsup and thumbsdown describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They're great visual aids to summarize your post, and might help to keep the wallet damage down a bit!

Need a little help with formatting? Check out the Forum Formatting Guide and Tricks of the Geek.

About Me

Who is this month's lucky host?! I've become more a solo gamer over the past two years even though I've been a avid boardgamer since 2009 when I first played The Settlers of Canaan with my then 7-year old daughter and was blown away with new gaming concepts beyond Risk, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit. I've been posting on the SGOYT for a little over a year, but not consistently. For those that may have not paid attention, I've become quite fascinated with playing Terraforming Mars solo, because it just really hits a sweet spot for me in my current crazy schedule.

*If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to send me a GeekMail! I'm sure I'll be busy with keeping up with the list and the various activities, yet I spend a good deal of time around here. It's an amazing place, filled with all of you absolutely wonderful people! Enough about me, though... Get those solo games out!

The Theme for December is
My Favorite Holiday Treat

The SGOYT lists are all about individuals playing alone and sharing their very unique tastes. This month's theme reflects the holiday season, so isn't boardgaming related. Just something we can share to get to know each other better. This month tell us about a holiday treat that just isn't the holidays if you don't have it this time of year because you love it so much.

A favorite meal.
A favorite side dish.
A favorite drink
A dessert.

Feel free to provide multiple examples of different items as you post different entries! Or you can just lump it all into big huge post!

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to include your favorite treat and why it's your favorite near the top or bottom of your entry with a clear label. I will be awarding GeekGold to any entry with this addition, and images are not required but would be awesome of if you did! Just be sure to make it obvious so I can spot it easier. Thank you!

There will also be contests for throughout the month, which can be found via the following links. Check back often, and good luck!

Long time listener, first time caller (well, feels like it, wow, it's been a while).

Doing some more solo playtesting of the 1066 variant for the other bot - Harry, or Harribo as I like to call him.

It's quite interesting playing from the other side of the channel so to speak, having worked on WillyBot previously. The asymmetry isn't batant but you can feel it for sure.

Anyway, had a good session, got some issues earmarked and some fix suggestions so we'll see.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this game solo even when losing 2-1.

A quick example of my luck, played a lovely card that lets you reveal the top 2 cards of the AI deck, discard 1 and put the other back - what 2 cards did I reveal:

My highest score!

Edit: I messed up my mountain placement.

Rookie error.

I'm gonna go hide my shame in a tall glass of root beer.

I'll have to review a few more times to make sure my scoring is correct. I had to adjust 1-2 because I found a shorter route and that route didn't go through the bonus square.

It's just a mess of turns for the southern tracks...and it feels a bit cheap to toss the mountains in the corner, but there's nothing in the rules about it so I'll take the score and run!

I think my previous high was 87, so I'm happy to squeak out some more points...

Played 4 games ( so far) of this during chirstmas vacation, scoring 30 40 50 and 60 points (though not in that order). On the 23rd my 7 year old son got bored waiting for a family christmas party to start, so i introduced him to this game. He easily beat me with a score of 64 on his first attempt. i did offer him a suggestion once or twice when it came to placing the switches, but he most,y made his choices himself. He was quite proud.

I have been working on a couple of PnP games over the last couple of days and I started with one of the simplest to make: 300 Rails.

It's pretty fun! I like that the randomness of the dice rolls come with mitigation in the form of choices for where you place the rails, as well as the two overrides.

From gallery of Dubious Bryn

Not great scores, but a couple of fun games. Lesson learned from game #2: don't surround the mine on three sides, amateur!

Now I just need to print up a bunch more sheets for this, I think!

Board Game: 7 Wonders Duel
Me: 84
Scott (AI): 76

This was my first game of 7 Wonders Duel, solo or otherwise, and I absolutely loved the puzzle aspect of trying to build up my score, prevent Scott from getting immediate victory, and limit his final score. I probably made a few mistakes along the way, but I had a blast regardless. This one got immediately sleeved afterwards, and is being added to the lunchtime rotation. I'd put off buying this several times, but bought it on a whim with a Barnes and Noble coupon a week ago.

My goal for the rest of the month is to play some of my heavier games, except obviously when I play at lunch, and to play them more often. Last month I really wanted to see how many different games I could play, but this month I want to get more plays of fewer games.

I haven't had much time to play solo games the last couple of weeks, but I did manage to squeeze this one in early December. I've been preoccupied with getting SGOYT activities ready and the toughest week getting through my two daughter's Nutcracker Ballet performances and helping usher. Ugh! It's taken almost a week to recover from that and we've all been fighting off various forms of colds too throughout the last two weeks. I can't wait for Christmas vacation ... although I'll probably be doing a lot of yard work and "honey do" list trimming.

solo variant of 7 Wonders Duel, and I must say it is quite good. The rules are located here: Pericles Rules

I lost the game by making a huge mistake of not keeping a close eye on the AI's shields on its wonders. I had done a good job of denying it the resources it needed for 2 rounds, but it was at the expense of allowing it to get a lot of shields. As soon as it was able to build wonders, it was able to push through for military victory.

The AI is more complex than the Scott variant, but I don't think it's overly complicated in figuring out the Pericle's next move. Madmihi did a pretty good job of giving enough information to drive AI's decision tree. I had one small question about resolving the science token which I interpreted as most points. Even knowing the AI's decision process ahead of time, still makes this solo variant and interesting and tougher "puzzle" to beat. I like that this variant also allows the player to obtain a military or science victory as well as opposed to the Scott variant where you have to win on points alone, but Scott can win also with military or science. So it's closer to the regular game which I prefer in my solo games.

thumbsup More challenging AI
thumbsup Plays more like the regular game by allowing military and science victories

Favorite Holiday Treat

I know that Egg Nog is a classic holiday treat, but let me just say that I hate it! However, what I truly love to have is a small cup of fresh boiled custard. Yeah, that's practically egg nog for some people based on how they make it (not always the case). I think it's the nutmeg I don't like in Egg Nog (but I do like it in other things). I love the rich creamy sweetness of boiled custard, and if it's fresh off the stove... the better. One time my oldest daughter attempted to make boiled custard one Christmas season, and it turned out amazing.

I'm including this here because it contains a detailed play-by-play of one session (not a whole playthrough, just one sit-down with the game) featuring Mary Kingsley taking on the Icy Maze. While there are spoilers, including one hidden area, I don't consider them anything major, and I haven't spoiled any puzzle solutions.

Also included is a review of the game and a discussion of spoiler sensitivity in games. In general, while I try to be sensitive of major story spoilers and puzzle solutions, I think recent trends in gaming (especially Legacy games) have gotten players worked up into a state where EVERYTHING is a spoiler, and it ends up spoiling discussion and community around the game, in my opinion.

I think this is one of the best things I've written this year, and I'd love it if you could take a look.

This continues to be a solo hit. I’m really enjoying it.

There are a ton of cards. This means there are lots of areas to explore.

I’m really thankful for the card dividers. There are so many cards to organize it would be difficult to find anything.

This is an excellent game. There are so many cards to explore. At least they are organized.

After completing the Voracious Godess curse, I put this game a way for a while. Late December, I went back to it, tackling both the Offering to the Guardians and the So-and-so Chest with Keelan.

I mostly pick Keelan because she does all the 050 cards and I really want to see what knowledge the continent has to offer. I used the 777 card (lame me) because I did not have the courage to risk starting all over again. I guess this will change, once I'm confident enough with the game. Though, I am still looking forward to Immortal Mode when the expansion is delivered.

Even though I already knew a great deal of the continent, I found the replayability to be great. The stories that happen to your little explorer are just so different.

I played with all the expansions mixed in and met 2 huge and 3 medium rockworms along with some babies.

I solved both curses, but barely. I found a nice treasure to help me open that chest (twice). And I am not sure if at one point I drew the right amount of cards. So, there's that. Anyways, the play was fun and I would recommend it.

thumbsup riddles to solve (might get stale after some playthroughs)
thumbsdown sorting cards back is not immensely bad, but not my favorite

(That's a lot of thumbs down, but I think it's still really great.)

Fun game that has seen my table every night for the past 2 weeks - about 15 minutes a game - with enough strategy and choices to be more than just a "chuck the dice game and hope" - It has that all important "just 1 more game" feel to it - very enjoyable and highly recommended -

Really happy to have time to get Ada Lovelace: Consulting Mathematician played. Truly, this is a wonderful solo game that's never, ever boring and always a great challenge.

Two games for the Dicember 2017 Challenge. Scores were 48 and 56 points. Poor Ada had no case, then she had to blame poor Charles Wheatstone! *Sad trombone*

Nothing to do at work today (and I didn't have to go in for Jury Duty!), so I printed this out and rolled dice using a phone app.

I know I am not a spacial thinking guy (ask my wife when I go to pack the car....yuck), but dang this game is tough. I finished with 31 points, which is barely out of the "exit the museum in disgust" range. Even though I unlocked both key and apple, I had no place where any of the four shapes would have helped me at end game. That's some poor planning on my part.

Looks like I have to print out another sheet and get back to it....this is a game where you must get better by playing more.

(New enhanced picture!)

EDIT

One more game. 56 Points this time. I knew I'd get better this time, but that still makes Ms. Lovelace accuse the wrong person. 5 completed rooms and 6 collected pieces of evidence doesn't cut it? Phew...75 seems a long way away.

Five games of this since the 22nd. I really need to purchase a laminator; the eraser on my pencil is dead.

This is up there with 30 Rails and Raging Bulls as far as super fun, rolling dice, need-to-replay-right-away games.

It's also got a fantastic name!

Scores so far:
52. 54. 61. 47. 67.

Not sure if I can top that 67. Still didn't get me a win (correctly solving the mystery needs a 75).

One more entry for Adas lovely little game.

If you play this long enough you will get a good feeling on how to fill the rooms in the most efficient way. There is still bad dice luck though. I came came pretty close this morning. Unfortunately all of my last dice rolls came out low. At least one 4+ in 3 rolls to fill the teapot would have saved the day. But as it stands, Charles Babbage gets blamed again.

My first play of this resulted in my reputation ending up in tatters (AKA I scored 44 points), but I already see some strategies I want to try the next time I play this.

This reminds me a lot of Pencil Park, only I like it a lot better. I couldn't even finish a game of Pencil Park for some reason, but this I want to play again. I think it is the idea you can combine what you are doing on the board with special abilities you can unlock (which you NEED to unlock if you want to do well) that makes it a more fulfilling game experience for me.

I like the name too.

Hey Everyone - Played my first solo game of this the other night. WOW. I really enjoyed this. One of the few times I instantly regretted backing out of a Kickstarter. But a huge thanks to everyone who answered my other thread and help me along to purchase.

For my first game I played two mages and fought the Rageborne. I was able to defeat him without much issue. My second match i randomly choose two mages and fought the Carapace queen. I won but realized I made a rule mistake so I will need to replay.

Since that night I have ordered War Eternal and The Depths. I will be grabbing anything and everything for this game. Instantly in my top 5 solo and I am sure my game group's will dig this. Huzah!

Recently traded for this and played my first game this evening.

I'm kind of surprised I won versus Rageborne. 'Course, it was the introductory "scenario", so I presume it was significantly easier than perhaps other scenarios. Also makes me wonder if I did something wrong, but the rules seem fairly straightforward, so I don't think I did.

It was a lot of fun with the heroes slowly building up their power and then unleashing a ton of hurt just before getting clobbered themselves. I avoided a loss when a power would have done 18 damage to Gravehold by discarding 6 gems. I had those because Mist used her ability previously to give Jian an extra 4 cards in his hand.

The final blow was dealt by Jian with a Planar Insight in the 4th Breach. With all breaches opened, he did 7 damage and used his ability Black Mirror ability to fire it off twice to finish off Rageborne.

Very cool game and I look forward to trying out other mage and Nemeses combinations.

Played this one last night, and it ended up being my last solo game of 2017.

I got this for Christmas after all the love its seen on here. I don't know why I waited so long to get it! It's great

I lost pretty bad, but was definitely able to see how I could greatly improve for my 2nd game tomorrow. Plus with the other characters and bosses, this looks to be a lot of fun and is an addition to my 10 x 10 list.

I've seen all the talk about it being a brain burner, and I can see that, but rules wise it was a lot simpler than I thought it would be. I can see this being a nice challenge when I'm in the mood for something that isn't several hours and tons of work to setup.

I am continuing to play through all of the expansion nemeses for this game. This time, it was Malastar, Nym, and Xaxos against Blight Lord. They didn't win, but they did get his life down to 29 and held on surprisingly long considering there were no healing cards in the deck. They were eventually destroyed by two nemesis turn order draws in a row, the first of which brought out a Monstrosity of Omens. Since Gravehold was already down to 2 life at that point, there was no chance.

Most of the card offer was cards from this expansion, except for 2 gem slots, which were filled randomly. Looking back, my strategy--to load all of the tainted jades onto one player--worked well for getting some damage going, but did not work well for preventing the tainted track from advancing because it took a while to get through a reshuffle for that character.

Edit: Played another game with Phaedraxa, Zhana, and Mist OG against Wayward One. This was one of those weird games where I felt I was doing really well but lost before I could do any damage to the Nemesis. My engine was just about to get going! I had culled a lot of crystals, had at least one pair of diamonds in each deck, had gotten some strong spells purchased, and had all breaches opened, but I hadn't gotten to use any of them against the nemesis because of the dang unleash ability and the minions that kept coming out.

Sparrow, Xaxos (voidbringer), and Ulgimor versus Knight of Shackles. Loss. I got a good rhythm going and got the boss down to 34 health, but his Invade ability killed me. Next time I should spend more aether trying to keep his breaches closed.

I am loving this expansion so far. The Nemesis is not as creative as some of the others, but his story is a lot of fun, and he has a few big tricks up his sleeve. The cards, on the other hand, are amazing in this one. I played with almost every new card in the offer, and cards like Fulminate (Link, so you can prep two to a single breach, and it gives +1 damage to every other spell you cast while it's prepped) and Eternity Charm (focus your lowest breach and then search the top 3 cards of your deck for a spell and prep it) are even better than they sound. With two Thermal Darts prepped to a Breach III or IV and a Fulminate prepped to Breach I, I was dealing 10 damage and gaining a charge, then getting those spells back into play quickly with my Eternity Charm. What did me in was when Invade brought Cataclysmic Fate, Morbid Gyre, and Gravity Splinter back into play, then the Nemesis got another turn before I could deal with any of them.

Adelheim, Brama, and Garu versus Maiden of Thorns. I won!!! It was a solid win, too, with every hero close to full health and Gravehold at 7. It came down to whether Brama or Garu would get a turn before Apocalypse Ritual went off.

Maiden of Thorns is a fun nemesis. She interacts with the supply piles, which really not enough of them do (it is a deck building game, after all). She forces players to quickly buy up cards in the early game to prevent her "Impale" ability from doing much damage (it deals damage equal to the number of cards in the pile her thorn token is on, then the token moves to a more expensive pile). You also can't completely empty the supply pile or she will essentially skip over it. However, once you have gotten at least one pile for each cost of card down to 1 card, you can pretty much ignore her. Actually, the fact that she forced me to buy cards I wouldn't normally have early on may have contributed to my win; I tend to spend too long trying to build an economy.

Another big factor in the win was the amazing Fulminate card that came out again. Also, I had Adelheim play a pure support role (an advantage of playing solo), buying up all the Conclave Scrolls and using them to charge his ability while thinning his allies' decks. I was able to avoid 3-4 nemesis cards this way. The second to last turn, Brama fired off 3 Resonates and 2 Fulminates for a total of 27 damage!

One rule that I think I played correctly is that even spells that deal no damage (like Garu's Torch when used to focus a breach) still get to deal "additional" damage. I forgot about that for the first half of the game but ended up taking advantage of it later on to deal 6-9 damage total.
