I will be using this list to track what I play over the coming year.

It will include everything I play from when I submitted my top 20 for the People's Choice Top 100 Solo Games for 2017 until I do the same for 2018.

It may also include some other ramblings.

You have been warned.

I took my inspiration from all of those great soloists who have game play tracker geeklists, personal challenge geeklists, etc.

Thank you all.

First of all, there's a board game about this TV show?!?!

Anyway, here are the board game related challenges I am setting myself this year:

IN PROGRESS:

Make sure all the games still in my collection at the time of 2018's voting have a minimum of 10 plays.

Make sure all the games that already had 10 plays before the start of 2018 receive 1 play by the time of 2018's voting.

Get the number of unplayed games in my collection down to 1 and keep it there (I currently have 2 unplayed games).

The Unplayed Games: Pandemic Legacy: Season 2, Star Wars: Rebellion.

Make sure I have played all the unplayed expansions in my collection by the end of the year (I currently have 5 games with unplayed expansions).

The Games with Unplayed Expansions: Galactic Strike Force, Dragonfire, The Walking Dead: No Sanctuary, Star Wars: Rebellion, Space Empires: 4X.

COMPLETED:

Play a legacy game through to completion (I got Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 for Christmas).
After 9 of the 12 months these were my initial thoughts: It Is A Bit Good
Final thoughts can be found here: It's Still A Bit Good

Try and solo War of the Ring: Second Edition by playing both sides.
My thoughts can be found here: #Cool

Learn Magic Realm.
Here's what happened: Buddy the Elf

Try a Series: COIN (GMT) game (I have bought Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62). I didn't like it and technically you could call this a fail, decide for yourself by reading about it here.

That's it for now but I may add some more throughout the year.

I recently bought a copy of the Karim redesign of Magic Realm and one of my aims over the next 12 months is to learn that beast.

I decided to start my journey towards that goal by playing this PnP game that takes some of the basic elements of Magic Realm and puts them in to a game that lasts 30 minutes or so.

I played it 12 times in the space of 5 days. The first 7 were with the basic rules and the final 5 were with the Magic Realm Light 30 Asterisk Expansion rules included.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

I loved it. I was almost tempted to re-submit my top 20 to Kevin and include this (probably at #19) but I didn't. He's busy enough as it is.

Every play had great story moments. My huntress who took down a giant on her own but was killed by 2 giant bats the next day. The alchemist who was able to absorb a demon and become it for the rest of the adventure, slaying trolls, giant spiders, serpents and anything else it encountered.

I think the expansion improves it. The simple addition of being able to alert magic chits turned the magic characters from meh in to marvellous.

I'm now excited to take on this monster.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

I'll probably epically fail at learning it though. shake

Last night was my wife Amy's annual Christmas party for her friends.

I was politely asked to vacate the premises until about 2am.

I went to my occasional gaming buddy Keith's house.  His wife was at the party and it was his birthday so some gaming was in order.

We played a couple of games of Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu.  Keith won his copy at the UK Games Expo in 2016.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

We won the first game on easy and then lost the second game on standard difficulty.

In fact we lost twice but the first was because we stupidly didn't keep track of the number of cultists in the supply.  We accepted the defeat and then replayed the turn.  We did better but lost when Cthulhu awoke with victory in sight.

Definitely my favourite Pandemic game.

It was nearly midnight but he suggested we play his copy of This War of Mine: The Board Game.  I said yes instantly.  I've wanted to play it since his KS copy arrived in the summer.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

We got through 2 days before my wife text me to say that it was time to come home. Well, time to come back and do taxi service for her mates.

It was only a brief time with the game but I really liked it.

I liked having a car full of drunk women considerably less.

Got to bed at 2.30am.

I am considered the Grinch in my house.

One of the reasons is because I refuse to wear a Christmas jumper.

That's changing this year.

My wife bought me this.

Finally.... a Christmas jumper that I'm ok with.

I tried hard (well, sort of) to resist this after seeing a few of my BGG buddies playing it but I finally caved.

Played it solo 10 times over the weekend and I really enjoyed it.

From gallery of garyrbrooks
I was green.

It's a very simple game, with a little bit of strategy and tactics but not too thinky. The solo method works really well, pushes you right to the end and takes seconds to implement.

Trying to get your Sprinteur and Rouleur to work together, capitalise on what the other teams are doing by slipstreaming them and save some big cards for the sprint finish is a nice little puzzle.

However, the simplicity is it's weakness. Once you have a grasp of that puzzle it really is the same puzzle for every track. After, a few games I had a strategy and it worked very well. 1 win in my first 4 games, 4 in my next 6.

It is fun to play but the lack of variety in strategy has put it on my trade list and in to this month's UK Maths Trade it will go.

I can then add this to an ever growing list of games I like but don't own any more (e.g. Fortune and Glory, Legendary Marvel, Descent, etc).

Anyway, thanks to those of you who put this on my radar. I'm glad I tried it and it was fun to play.

Bonus play:

Tried it with one Peloton Bot and one muscle team. Used the only track I hadn't got a win on.

It was fun and having two AIs that work differently was good. I still won though.

I'm still trading it but thanks Mo for getting me to try it.

Second game night in less than a week (this multiplayer thing might catch on ). My mate brought round his copy of this so we could give it a proper go as we'd only been able to play through 2 rounds last time.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

We lasted 3 rounds and then everyone had either committed suicide or been taken by human traffickers. It had felt like a lot longer than that because this game is an unrelenting tale of misery and woe (Keith says it's tougher than the video game).

There are 5 tokens you can put on a character to indicate their state. Hunger, fatigue, misery, illness and wounds. In less than 3 rounds 1 of our characters had all 5. This was the 1 who didn't commit suicide. They tried to escape to Canada(?!?!) and got abducted by human traffickers. Yay!

On our first scavenging run we had to choose between food for everyone or a baby. We saved the baby but in the end that helped caused everyone's suicide, etc. Yay again!

This game is full of tough choices but I'm not sure it's tough choices I want to make.

Keith said I could hang on to it to give it a solo try and I will but I'm not expecting to enjoy it. Mechanically it's a good game but do I want to play games where I choose between feeding myself or helping an abandoned baby?

Do I want to play a game that ends with suicides and human trafficking?

I think it does a great job of showing the choices humans would have to make if they were civilians caught up in a war but I think it might do it a little too well.

It's a well produced game but I'm not sure it's fun.

We then played 2 games of Flamme Rouge to wind down. The first just me and Keith and the second with 2 solo bots (muscle team and peloton). He really liked it.

Another reason to keep it?

Played this twice last night.

I was giving Marty's December challenge a go and to see if I wanted to keep it.

I've had it for nearly 2 years but it hasn't made my top 20 either year. Not a great sign.

I scored an 88 and then an 83. Pretty poor scores, even for this tough challenge (no engine so only 2 workers all game).

Although I enjoyed the tension as the bad of resources runs out and more events appear (a great mechanic), I find the theme creates zero excitement and I'm shooting for a high score.

Those 2 things have always been an issue for me and so with a heavy heart I'm putting this in this month's UK Maths Trade.

Not updated this list for a few days. Sorry.

A great day out in York on Sunday with Amy and the girls. We took the train and it takes less than an hour.

There was a Christmas market, an ice trail (ice sculptures) around the city centre and it snowed. Just a lovely day wandering around the city and soaking in the atmosphere.

I meet friends there a lot as it's on the same train line as where I'm from. I've frequented many a drinking establishment in the town so I enjoyed seeing this poster for sale in a shop window.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

Later in the day I passed my favourite hostelry in York - Pivni.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

No chance to visit it though. cry

We also bought my dad a flat cap for Christmas. I had to try it on to test the size and my family said it really suited me. I don't suit hats. That's one of my things. I'm not sure I believe them.

I'll let you lot decide.

5 plays over the weekend. Used the Elysium and Hellas boards.

Won 1, lost 4. The same as the first 5 games I played of it. It's good to see I haven't gotten any better.

2 of the defeats were due to stupid mistakes that my brain made that meant I didn't have enough money in the last generation to pay for stuff that could have won the game.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

(I wanted this to say "Mars Attacks My Brain" but I didn't have enough A's.) shake

I like the decisions this gives you to make, I love the theme and I enjoy how it really ramps up (from next to nothing you can do on turn 1 but you are a terraforming god by the end). I also like that to win you have to actually terraform Mars (complete the 3 parameters).

However, I just can't shake the feeling that I'm not playing the full game. You don't use the awards and milestones, cities have very little value (a few give small bonuses when you place them) and there isn't competition for cards so you can sometimes not cycle through enough cards to get what you need.

If this had Viticulture's theme it would be on it's way out, if Viticulture had this theme it might be my #1.

Today is all about this:

From gallery of garyrbrooks

Taking my eldest Darcey who is nearly as excited as me.

We saw The Force Awakens 3 times together at the cinema (I saw it 4 times in total shake) and I expect we'll see this more than once.

I will post an update later tonight when I've seen it. No spoilers though.

Update:

Darcey thought it was the best film ever.

That's all I'm going to say.

I've always been interested in this game. The Drive Thru Review playthrough of this had always made it seem like my kind of game (exploration, hand management, sci-fi, etc) but it had no solo rules.

I love his rules for Core Worlds so my hopes were high.

Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed after just 2 plays.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

The solo rules work fine and achieves what it sets out to do but it is far too easy to win. There is a big penalty for not exploring but it can be mitigated in the first couple of rounds if you get the right cards.

I score a 17 in my first game and a 10 in my second when I played very conservatively. I also made it harder on myself by not putting cards the AI failed yo use back under the deck so this shortened the game. I also checked to see if I was scoring correctly and I was.

To win you need to score 3. There are levels of victory but I'll let Vin Diesel (the great philosopher himself) say what I think about levels of victory.

All that being said about the solo variant, the game itself just didn't excite me. It was merely an OK game to play that probably is a better multiplayer experience with battles and trying to work out what your opponent will do next.

So the fact I'm putting it on the trade pile is no fault of the game or the solo variant. It was me. I expected too much from it as a solo game.

I could try it some more but I've got a few unplayed games to get to (and more coming at Christmas) so I just can't justify the time.

Not much gaming this weekend as a lot on.

Friday night was Christmas beers with the lads. 6 hours of talking nonsense.

On Saturday we went to the panto at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

I hate pantos. It's another one of my things. However, just like hats I might be changing my stance. The last 4 years of going to the Theatre Royal is having an impact.

13 years ago they stopped hiring actors off the TV, etc and got a father and son team to write and produce it. This means they have more budget for other things like a giant crocodile that comes out over the audience, top class acrobats and performers, 3D backgrounds, etc.

It has paid off. It's a proper spectacle and I have even been known to laugh. We've already booked for next year (Goldilocks and the 3 Bears).

Also, had a couple of family get togethers and finally Kitty's Brownie Carol Service on Sunday night.

I did manage to play Galactic Strike Force (a Black Friday sale purchase) once over the weekend (a few turns here and there). I'll post some thoughts after a few more plays.

I had the morning off work as it was the KS2 school carol service today at a local church. The children who are learning instruments also play at the event.

My eldest Darcey was playing the guitar. For 12 months she has been going on about her debacle at last year's service. She had only been playing the guitar for 3 months and totally messed it up on the day. It has really been playing on her mind for the last couple of weeks.

Today she would have to play Silent Night with all of the guitar players and then We Wish You A Merry Christmas with just 2 others from the year above.

Silent Night went fine but then she had to wait about 15 minutes before she played WWYAMC at the end.

The time came, would she do it?

Let's just say, she played it well. No nerves at all. So proud.

Kitty was there singing and next year she will probably be part of the violin group.

My dad (who now lives in the area) hasn't seen any of this sort of thing before and loved it.

Even this Grinch is starting to feel a bit Christmas-y.

Galactic Strike Force is still on the table and I'm in to my 3rd game of it. I quite like it but worry there is 'one strategy to rule them all' when playing it. I think it's going to stay set up until a Christmas gift knocks it off.

It's taken me a whole week to play this just 3 times. Not because it's bad, has difficult rules or takes too long to play.

I've just been busy with work and Christmas stuff.

It can take up a lot of space when you've installed a lot of tech and there are loads of opposition ships out.

It is...

I bought some glass beads to track all the phase actions and it worked well. Without them it would have been a non-starter as I'd never be able to notice them all.

Update 4/1/2018:

These 4 plays were fun but not challenging enough.

It has all the mechanics that make Castle Panic enjoyable and some nice new stuff that helps it stay thematic too.

Winning by completing missions makes it feel like Star Trek.

However, if you find Castle Panic too simplistic and easy then this will be too.

This will need expansions just like Castle Panic to make it a decent solo game. Also, the card play in Castle Panic is more interesting (with Castle Panic: The Wizard's Tower included).

I will be putting this up for trade as Castle Panic with the 3 expansions is the better game and they are too similar to have both.

This has also probably crossed Dead Panic off my must try at some stage list.

Apologies for not putting many details about the games I'm playing at the moment but the last couple of weeks have been pretty busy.

I'm also using these posts to keep track of what I'm playing so at the moment that's what they are doing.

Hopefully, I will get a chance to update the posts with more thoughts soon.  However, it will probably be in January as I'm off (with the family and lots of friends) for a few days over new year.

This may also mean I won't get a chance to wish everyone a Happy New Year.  So in case I don't, here it is now - HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Anyway, a little about Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

I said I wanted to play a legacy game this year and now I have - 11 times in 3 days.

I had bought this twice before but sold it both times before opening it.  I have never been interested in playing Pandemic and because I didn't want to start something I might not get all the way through.  I didn't want to waste money.

Well, one thing this isn't is a waste of money.

I'm two thirds of the way through this game now and it's been a truly great experience.  It's the equivalent of a good page turner or a binge worthy TV show.  It's my Game of Thrones or Dark Tower.

As soon as I finish a game (no matter the outcome) I want to play another.  I'm always thinking about it.  I'm trying to guess the next thing that's going to happen.

I'm a little sad to be leaving it for a few days.  I want to get to the ending.  I need to know how it all turns out.

I said in my top 20 that Mansions of Madness: Second Edition was my best 'experience' game.  Well, not any more.

I'll let the light box have the last (seriously understated) word.

I hope everyone had a nice New Year's Eve and I wish everyone all the best for 2018.

I'm back now (even had to come in to work today cry - I'd hoped to be off until the 8th) after a few days away with friends. 25 people in one house (a big one admittedly) was fun but no gaming and limited access to the internet was the cost.

Several hundred subs waiting so just had to mark them all as read. Apologies to those of you whose geeklists, etc I follow.

Got home yesterday afternoon and got in a couple of games of Pandemic Legacy: Season 1. Still amazing.

Will give some final thoughts on it soon (as well as give some more detailed thoughts on some of the other games I played over Christmas).

Anyway, good to be back, wishing you all well and let's crack on with 2018.

It’s finished.

The story is done.

The experience is over.

18 plays. 9 wins, 9 losses.

It will never be played again – at least not the legacy elements of the game anyway (I could play standard Pandemic on the board but I won’t – more on that later).

Or as my wife Amy put it, “You’ve succeeded in creating a load of recycling.”

Here are my final thoughts (spoilers will be hidden):

Story/Narrative/Experience/Theme, etc

Not the most original story but it is handled so well and the game play works with it perfectly.

I was never taken out of the experience by the mechanics.

This game just kept forcing tough choices on me, including one of the most difficult I’ve ever had to make. It also had ramifications in later months.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I sacrificed Kitty to win in November. She had been part of the game since the start and is named after my daughter. She was the researcher and her skills had saved the day many times. However, I would lose on the next infect cities step or she could die to prevent that occurring. I chose to let her die.
Fate punished me for such a callous act though, as her skills would have made her essential in December. I lost both attempts at it. It felt thematically right though.
Another tough decision, was to use a nuclear weapon and what city to use it on. I’m sorry Tehran.
Just amazing. Like I said before, it is a page turner. 18 plays across 5 different days. I never play games that much, that quickly.

Mechanics

It’s basically Pandemic with extra rules (quite a lot of extra rules by the end).

I’ve always found Pandemic ‘meh’ so thought that would be a problem, it isn’t. Everything I’ve mentioned above made me forget I was playing Pandemic.

Also, the extra rules added some things I really liked.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Searching was always fun. Equipment and sabotage were also nice.
Legacy Elements

Handled excellently with one exception (see the spoiler box). Each new reveal was timed right and complemented the story and mechanics.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Some great examples:
Opening a box to find out the disease cubes are now being replaced by faded people minis.
Opening another to find out a search mechanic is being introduced.
Scratch cards that reveal win bonuses for the next month or the next thing you needed to make a vaccine.
Having the game turn from fighting an unknown disease to uncovering a conspiracy and you need to sabotage the military infrastructure.
The only negative:
The sudden change of direction in December. The new objectives to win that month were a bit too jarring with how things had developed smoothly throughout the game.
Replayability

Obviously, each copy of this has no replayability as a legacy game.

However, just like my other favourite ‘experience’ game Mansions of Madness – the strong story and narrative leads to a lack of replayability even if you buy another copy.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The story is extremely linear, although a few elements would change (e.g. the disease you pick to become the one you can’t treat/cure, the characters you use, the cities that would fall, etc) the overall feel would be the same and by the end of the game you would have unlocked all the same stuff. Also, as you know what to expect at certain times you can plan for it. Not knowing what is coming makes the game a bit harder but also makes it feel more real.
There is also a scoring system to work out how well you did and gives you a different epilogue based on your score. Knowing what scores well and what doesn’t would influence your choices.
IMO there is no point buying another copy and playing through the legacy elements again. It just wouldn’t be the same experience.
Also, I don’t want to play standard Pandemic on the board (which is easily doable) as the game still holds no interest for me. 18 plays confirmed I still find the mechanics ‘meh’.

New Rules

The game introduces new rules constantly to keep the story flowing and they worked really well. They all added to the joy of playing it. None were too complex.

However, they came so frequently that some of the more passive ones (i.e. not actions you take but additional steps in the turn order) could slip through the net on occasion. I definitely missed some rules in some of my games.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
For example, during the draw cards step you have to added faded figures to the cities of cards you’ve drawn that match the colour of the disease you can’t cure/treat. I forgot this regularly and had to go back and put out figures on several occasions. Remembering to put vaccine doses at vaccine factories was another one.
After it happened the first time, I just accepted that it would happen and this allowed me to enjoy the games more.

Overall

The best solo game ‘experience’ I’ve ever had but not the best solo game I’ve ever played.

I can’t recommend this highly enough though. Even if you don’t like Pandemic (and I don’t) you should give this a go (either solo or with a group). A binge worthy treat.

Even the fact that you can’t play it again (something that stopped me trying it before) should not worry you.

I paid £39.99 for my copy and despite it never being on my table again it was worth every penny. That’s about the cost of 13 pints and I’ll remember this better than I would the beer, in fact after 13 pints I wouldn’t remember anything.

Some of my other favourite games still haven’t reached 18 plays.

If I had to rank this now it would be my #3 or #4 solo game of all time and I’ll never play it again.

The question is though, how do I follow it? whistle

Posted this elsewhere but feel it should go here as well.

I've also put it before War of the Ring as it happened before I set that game up.

Had the day off yesterday with my 2 girls (9 and 7 years old). They go back to school next week.

Between some chores (visit to Ikea, tidying the kitchen) we played a bunch of games. We started with a couple of games of this.

I lost both times. One win each for my girls.

However, my moment where I gave the single die I had left a stern talking too and that it just needed to be a 6 and then rolling a 6 was a fun moment.

We then played The Game of Life and my youngest one that. We were all within £100K of each other and if my eldest had sold her house for more she would have won.

Then a game of King of Tokyo. I managed to win it. I was in Tokyo for ages and in the end that was what gave me the points to win. My girls just don't get punchy enough. Maybe that's a good thing.

Finally, we played Catan: Junior and my eldest romped to victory. She just seemed to roll what she needed every turn. I couldn't keep up. My youngest got bored and just decided she would collect as many goats as possible and open a goat farm.

A great day.

I continue to wade through my unplayed games. This was under the tree at Christmas.

It is is my second game from the 'Justin Recommends' selection.

Someone helped me set up and also fiddled about with my light box. 10GG for the first person to guess who it was.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

I'm going to play this two handed, something I usually hate.

I don't expect this to be a keeper but the theme and Justin's enjoyment of it made it something I could not ignore.

I'm excited though.

Updates to follow soon.

Update 7/1/2018:

So take this with a pinch of salt.

I've only played the game once and it's never good to judge a game after just one play.

My first play of Scythe sucked and now I love it. I like to play stuff a handful of times if possible these days before passing judgement.

These are just my initial thoughts and may change after another play or two.

The short version is that I really really like it. I might even go as far as to say I love it.

Playing both sides wasn't an issue. I picked my strategies and try to stick to them. I only looked at cards when it was necessary. I decided there were no take backs for either side (I had to accept my decisions, even if I realised there was a better one before the next sides turn). Played it optimally for both sides.

I was in the Lord of the Rings. I was Frodo and Sam. I was Boromir helping to defend Minas Tirith. I was the Witch King defeating the North Men in the Shire. I was sad when Strider was killed early in the game. I felt both good and bad when Isengard forces took Helm's Deep.

In the end I pushed the Ring bearers too hard and they were corrupted in sight of Mount Doom.

Another 'experience' game and another cracking one at that.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

Like I said, this may change with further plays. As I learn the cards and the strategies it may start to get stale. Right now it's putting a smile on my face. I'm going to enjoy it while it does.

I've set it back up again. Round two.

Update 10/1/2018:

After my second game I'm all over the place about this game.

My heart loves it. To my heart it is definitely my precious. Why read or watch LotR ever again when I can be in it and even write my own ending.

The level of excitement I felt after getting Gandalf and Boromir to raise an army in Edoras and take back Helm's Deep and then conquer Orthanc can not be overstated.

However, it became clear that it was unlikely that the ring bearers would be able to get to Mount Doom. Their corruption had reached too high and they hadn't been able to move quickly due to some bad/good rolling by the shadow player (e.g. on 3 straight turns there was a minimum of 5 dice in the hunt for the ring box, 7 at one point).

I kind of felt I was left treading water for a few turns until the inevitable win by the Shadow player.

Also, the Shadow player lacked any really exciting moments. They gathered victory points by simple attrition and this just wasn't overly fun.

And then there is the fact that I can only see me pulling this beast out once or twice a year when I'm in the mood. Not really enough to justify keeping it.

My head is telling me that I shouldn't keep it and my head usually wins these battles.

But....

It's the best dip in and out of board game I've played. I usually like to sit and play a game in one sitting but this just suits a turn here and there. I like stepping away from it and reliving it in my thoughts.

However, it is also a great 'just one more turn' game. The amount of times I sat down to play one turn and then realised I'd played 5 or 6, well it was a lot.

So will my head win or can my heart claim a victory against the odds, just like the Free People?

I'm setting it up for a third and final play through. Let's see.

Update 13/1/2018:

Third and final play before deciding what to do with this glorious beast of a game.

It told another story. Different to the previous two games and the book but familiar too. Like an old friend.

Helm's Deep fell easily to Saruman but Boromir led a defence of Edoras for the ages.  The Southrons besieged Dol Amroth and fought and won a legendary battle against an army of Gondor.

Frodo and Sam reached Mordor.  One step from the Crack of Doom.  Victory over Sauron was in sight.  It was risky (the corruption track was on 9) but they drew a hunt tile.  It was an eye.  3 corruption.  Taking them to 12.

Just like the book.  Frodo corrupted at the last minute but no Gollum to bite his finger off this time though.

My heart filled with joy.

However, all the problems I mention above still exist.  My head still can't justify having the game in my collection.

So did my head win the argument?

From gallery of garyrbrooks

The enjoyment of playing this far outweighs the final result.  The ride is important, the destination isn't.

This stays in my collection.

Now I have to give some of the minis the hot water treatment.

Bought this when I popped in to my FLGS on Saturday.

Set it up Sunday after going with Darcey to see   Star Wars: The Last Jedi again.  She still loves it and I enjoyed it a fair bit more than the first time, which surprised me.

This is a small and reasonably quick game to set up and play.  Picked it to play next as I've got a games night on Tuesday and I don't want to get into anything too heavy until after that.

The solo variant works really well and is easy to manage.  It's also a decent challenge.  2 wins out of 5 plays is about where I like it.

You have a few choices of how to use the cards and I always like that in a game.  You can also try and game the AI.  Some might not like that but I do (the Core Worlds soloplay variant is the best example).

It adds a little more thinkiness to the game.  Not a bad thing.

I love the portal card art.  These are 2 of my favourites.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

Homicidal Gummy Bear World and the Land of the Zombie Toys.

I quite like it but is that good enough these days?  Possibly, possibly not.

After my last 2 new game experiences this just feels so tame in comparison.  Shouldn't blame it for that though.

So it turns out I'm not that good at fishing.

Picked this up at my FLGS on Saturday along with Multiuniversum. This was half price so despite the theme being of little interest my bargain brain said "Buy it now!".

I had watched a couple of solo videos so knew the solo mode looked OK.

It actually plays better than OK, it's a frustrating fight against an AI opponent that just keeps catching fish and blocking your moves. Imagine if the bot from Race for the Galaxy and the Automa from Viticulture decided to go fishing together.

Played it 6 times and only managed 1 win (in the fifth game). I definitely got better in the last couple of games but the AI opponent didn't care.

There is a little randomness and luck in what colour bait you draw but managing that and making sure you remove the right colour last so you get the correct fish is vital. Combined with making sure you get the best use of your 2 actions (when the AI lets you) makes for more of a mental challenge than I expected.

A surprisingly good solo worker placement/removal game that plays in about 30 minutes.

It gives me some of the feeling of Walnut Grove and Viticulture. High praise from me anyway.

I'm still not bothered by the theme though.

So far this month my wife Amy has been on a mission to clear the house of clutter and update a few rooms.

I have been to the dump several times, the clothes bank a few times and the loft is filling up.

She's also improved the girls rooms, new beds, storage options, etc. They even have wall mounted light boxes which you can write on (I'm jealous).

Anyway, Dunshire needed a sort out too and so I did it yesterday.

Everything is now in it's proper place and all my games are in the cupboard. There is even some sense to where all the games go.

From gallery of garyrbrooks

Shelf 1 (top): On the left is Mansions of Madness: Second Edition (it has outgrown it's box) and on the right are games I want to trade.

Shelf 2 & 3: Games I've played more than 10 times and I know I'm keeping. Basically, the awesome stuff.

Shelf 4: Games I've played more than 10 times that have expansions I haven't touched.

Shelf 5: Games I've played but less than 10 times.

Shelf 6 (bottom): On the left are all the family/kids games and on the right are all the games I haven't played at all yet (there is a second stack behind that you can't see).
