This geeklist is for all those games that we gave up on. Whether the game was too boring, wasn't challenging enough, had poor controls, or any other reason, if you don't feel like finishing a game, post about it here!

Information you're encouraged to include:
- Platform
- How long you played
- Reason for abandoning
- Anything else you want to share

Remember to keep your comments friendly and discuss only the game. Comments attacking people, e.g. "You're just to stupid to appreciate this game!" are not acceptable.

New Users:
Feel free to join the discussion at any time. You need not read all existing entries before participating. Simply post your abandoned game to the list.

As always, if your comment would be good to include in the User Information on a game page, be sure to post your comments there as well in order to also populate game pages with information.

Waaaait a minute... who are you?
Oh, right. Hi, I'm Krzysztof (Kristof for ease of typing, Kris for short) and I've been an enthusiastic game abandoner (and hence a guy who posts in these lists a lot) for a few years now.

used to run these for the last few years, but he decided to transfer it to somebody, and I volunteered. Simple as that.

What does that mean for the list?
Not much, frankly. Other than me being the person to post this list in the first place, and the bit of nonsensical self-indulgence you're reading right now, everything else stays roughly the same. AFAIK there was never any need for a moderator to step in one of these lists, so you'll likely just see me posting my own abandoned games from this point onward!

actually Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, basically same damn game with a D&D Moustache.

I have 144 hours logged on Steam, although that's a bit deceptive since large portions of that time involved having the game run in the background. It's a Clicker/Incremental game, but one that doesn't really prestige much and relies more on finding good gear for your characters. After some gifted chests and some freebies, I finally managed to get enough gear that most of my characters had most slots at least filled with something, even if it was just common gear.

But the overall gameplay isn't very good. I'm planning to play fewer clicker games in 2018, and more games I actively enjoy, and just home from my NYE party at 3 in the morning, I'm going to start 2018 by deleting and abandoning this game I no longer enjoy.

Abandoned might be too strong a word, but honestly the future looks dim for this one.

I liked Katamari Damacy so much.

This like God of War/God of War II I think a lot of the thrill was the novelty of the game. I had never played anything like it.

Playing We heart Katamari I kept thinking it was more of the same. Just not quite as good. The music went from being super fun and enjoyable to being offputting.

And the mechanics in the overworld I don't care for. It is impossible to know what will open a new fan. And I don't know how to tell if a particular fan has more objectives available or just the one. I know some have several. It's possible all have several. I don't enjoy the mystery.

Now that we are in 2018 I have my full hardcore list that needs tending to as well as other community challenges. I just doesn't seem likely I will be playing much more of this.

Why abandoning: Unpolished gameplay and graphics. I didn't really like it.

STALKER is one of my favorite games, so I tried out this earlier game from the same devs. I can definitely see some similarities to STALKER; it's a near-future FPS set in an area that has been taken over by some kind of mysterious alien anomaly. The game has a really hard time running properly on my computer, and the muddy low-res graphics make it really hard to see enemies, which makes things hard when enemies are shooting me and I can't figure out where they are in a wide open field.

I'm glad I tried it, but I could not get into it.

I've been playing this one sporadically in the last six or so months. Accumulated maybe 6 or so hours across three attempts. Didn't get very far in the progression.

Reasons for abandoning: overwhelming and stressful, not what I need right now.

I've fired the game up now, for a single quest, but the last time I played it must've been November, or maybe even before that. Darkest Dungeon does a lot of stuff that I love, mostly with its theme, atmosphere and art style. The gameplay is solid, I think, but it seems very muddled and it's annoying when I don't understand the mechanics in a tactical game like this one. The general consensus seems to be that you need a wiki, and upwards of 40 hours, to complete the game, and while I had fun with it in the past, when I played it again today, I just felt immediately tired, instead of enthusiastic.

It's my resolution for 2018 to do less work in my free time, and unfortunately Darkest Dungeon feels like work. I hope to revisit it some time in the future, but it'll have to be at least a few years down the line.

First, thanks Grimwold for gifting me the game! I'm glad I got to try it out.

Why abandoning?
Not as fun as I'd hoped it would be.

This game has some pretty neat features (e.g. easy track builder) I wish we saw more of in other racing games, but it isn't as fun as a lot of other racing games I've enjoyed. The game is basically a standard arcade racer with various events/tracks to complete and cars to unlock that have different speed/strength/handling values. You can build up a boost meter that lets you boost and destroy opponents or certain parts of the track to make shortcuts. You mostly build boost by drifting, which I found surprisingly tricky to control in this game. The feel of the controls really didn't click with me, and I found it difficult to beat any events after the first several. The track builder is neat and easy to use, but I don't particularly enjoy the actual racing much, so I think I'm done with the game.

As a funny side note, my son who loves racing games also played and enjoyed the game a bit. He liked making his own tracks and then racing big rigs vs other big rigs on it, which was amusing to watch.

Unfortunately, I have to abandon this and I'm super-disappointed because
a) I really liked the first one
b) I was really good at it too. Probably the only video game I could play competitively.

But, the PC version is so buggy that it's simply unplayable. First it refused to acknowledge the presence of my Xbox One controller (a known issue on Windows 10 that Capcom never bothered to correct.) But OK, while not ideal, it's one of those games that don't really suffer from playing with the keyboard arrow keys.

More importantly though, Except in the tutorial, there's this weird bug that would constantly alter the speed of the game back and forth. I have no idea why. I just know it makes in unplayable.

In klocki (yes, with a lower case k) you switch, turn, rotate, and move tiles with lines in order to connect all the lines with similar patterns and thus solve the puzzle.

It is like a Jigsaw. It is really not much more. Very, VERY little thinking is involved.

I persisted for a while, solving puzzles rapidly, and then started wondering how many puzzles there are. Steam discussions say "about 80". But how many have I solved? The game provides no overview. It provides no number. It provides nothing but a puzzle and a backward button if you want to return to a previous puzzle.

So I do not know how many I have solved. Users say that it takes about an hour to solve all puzzles. So I might be at the last puzzle.

But I am soooooo boooooored.

Played it for two hours, and got into what I think is an unwinnable situation on my first attempt at the game.

Reasons for abandoning: too annoying and grindy for how simple it is.

Kingdom starts out almost relaxing. It gets a bit tense when you realise you need to build up your forces to defend against monsters. It then gets tedious as you need to cover more and more ground before doing even a simple action. Then the annoying stuff rolls around - things the game won't tell you (it literally gives you a tutorial that comprises of explaining a single mechanic and lets you learn on your own... which, in a less malicious game wouldn't be an issue), things you get punished for not knowing on your first playthrough, things that make little sense and things that you can just guess at.

And, at least in the two hours I played, I think I upgraded all I could, and all I had were five unit types and nowhere to go from there but to grind.

Kingdom just doesn't feel rewarding enough for me to give it a second chance. There's just not enough stuff happening, and doing the same things over and over to less and less actual effect (what use do I have for a strong economy, if I already bought pretty much everything I'll need?) doesn't sound, nor feel, fun.

If there's more to this game, the devs sure went out of their way to bury it deep!

I am ready to become lynched because I did plan to play this for the Top 201-300 Challenge - but after just... less than an hour I ended up shutting down the game.

Then a few days later I tried again. 10-15 minutes into to, I stopped it again. The next day I uninstalled it!

I doubt I will pick it up anytime in the near future... Well, if Nikolai won't complete it, I will maybe pick it up again in December and seriously hate my way through it - for the good of the VGG Community that is!

I started playing this a few weeks back. I'm sure it's a great game if you're into the genre, but I'm not particularly a fan (I never finished Bioshock either, and System Shock put me off as soon as I muddled through the crappy tutorial and then had to putz around with a series of stupid doors representing uninteresting career path choices) and it keeps managing to piss me off.

The first sign came during the intro sequence. I took the helicopter ride, and then wondered if it were possible to jump up into the helicopter blades. I then managed to do this, resulting in my first death. Sweet, I got an achievement for that! Then I went to resume and...wait, there's no autosave? So I had to restart from the very beginning, and redo everything up to that point, including the helicopter ride title sequence again. It only took a few minutes, but still annoying.

So then I get past the intro and out into what seems to be a hub area of the space station. And this starts a sequence where I keep running into enemies, and then immediately getting killed. Eventually I turned the difficulty down from Normal to Easy, and I still get killed. Frustrated, I shelve the game for a while.

So today I come back to it after a bad day at work. Start the game up, almost immediately get killed. Change the difficulty back to easy, because apparently that didn't persist for some reason, go to try again, and...game freezes, forcing me to restart the computer.

Screw it, that's it, I've had enough of this turd. Uninstalled. Maybe the game would go better once I've gotten some psi abilities, but I'll never know because I didn't even get that far.

Playing a few other better aRPGs this week made me say to myself, "Self, there's no point playing an aRPG with clunky/laggy feeling combat that you don't really enjoy." It's a slightly sub-par aRPG to begin with, low production value and nothing to positively distinguish it from every other aRPG (with the exception of a personal housing plot, which, meh.) So 7 hours in, I decided to delete it.

Was going to leave a Steam review and found there was no store page! Apparently Guardians of Ember was just removed from Steam because its publisher was manipulating reviews. Which explains the high reviews for such a sub-par aRPG.

I never knew a gamer could be this broken without being buggy. On my first try, my game lasted for more than an hour, with no way in sight of how I could reach Game Over except by falling asleep. If you're the least bit attentive, this is a game that only ends when you're too bored to continue.

The fixed time limit mode is slightly better for obvious reasons, but still not interesting. and the sh'mup mode is almost as broken and not not any more interesting.

Right at the final boss area, I decided I had enough of the repetitive level grinding for now.

I'll come back to the game at some point to finish it up, but I spent too many nights running in circles to hit random battles so that I could become slightly more powerful.

I paid $1 for 3 AC:Chronicles games several months ago. I guess that's a dollar wasted.

Chronicles China has an inconsequential story that barely adds anything to the Assassin's Creed lore and plays like a poorly-made stealth game. There are many other good 2D and 2.5D games that easily surpass Chronicles in both style and fun factor. Give this one a pass.

I don't expect the others to be any better, so consider this my abandonment of all 3 of them.

I'm halfway through the game, just finished mission 7 of 15.

The entire time I was playing I found myself wishing this game was level-based like the first. I really didn't like the open world at all. Plus, all the districts feel the same. Even though I'm running to new areas of the city, all the buildings and layouts seem familiar--because they are! The city is just a huge repetition of boxes, fences, walls, and grapple points for you to use as you slowly trek from waypoint to waypoint. There's also no one around except for stationary NPCs, which makes the entire world feel dead.

I also didn't like that some missions require you to complete arena combat rounds. One of the allures of the first game was the ability to run past combat, but this one forces you to participate. And unlike the first game, you can't disarm KrugerSec guards and use their weapons against them.

Mirror's edge also makes a fatal flaw of many open world games. There are simply far too many collectibles and side quests. Anyone who actually tries to finish all of them will certainly get bored long before they run out of side activities.

This game is complete and utter trash. While the graphics are impressive, this game is as awful as the equally visually impressive but unplayable Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which coincidentally, was also a 2012 release. The controls and action are similar to Resident Evil 5, which was an action game with solid controls and good pacing. This game is frantic, has far too many quick-time events, horrible acting, a thin story, and too many in-game menus.

I tried to play this with a friend and we were going through the game in the recommended way by playing the episodes in an order that makes the most chronological sense from a story perspective. We only completed the first two chapters of Chris and then we were close to finishing the first two chapters for Jake Mueller when my system crashed. We lost a little bit of ground in one of the frustrating and interminable "stealth" sequences and we decided to just start playing Batman: Arkham Asylum rather than suffering through any more of this game.

RE6 is by far the worst RE game that I have played and I really hope that Capcom lost a ton of money on it. Supposedly, this was the largest game project that the company has undertaken and employed some 600 people. The guy overseeing the project was the same person who did Resident Evil 4. I must assume that RE4's good qualities owe nothing to this individual since literally none of the good qualities of the RE action games made it into RE6.

Along with Perfect Dark Zero and Medal of Honor: Warfighter, this game is the worst that I've played on the Xbox 360. Total trash, no redeeming value.

I booted this up again this afternoon after seeing it on the beaten game list and talking with my work friend about it. This is his favorite video game of all time, and from the 13 hours I’ve put into it over the past year, I totally get why. To say this is a bad game would not be a fair or accurate statement. In fact, it’s because of how good it is that I find myself so disappointed that it’s just not more fun for me.

I played for about an hour on my lunch break. I want to play through it so badly. But I just don’t have fun with it because of the weapon durability system. I can’t stress enough that I know why the developers put it there, but I really wish they would have gone about it differently. I don’t really know why I can’t seem to get past it, and I hope that maybe I can at some point. But for the purposes of my hardcore list, I’m going to cross it off.

It’s strange. It’s a good game that I don’t have fun with, and I don’t know that I can think of a time that this has happened before.

I'm not sure what prompted me to try this again recently, except I was in the mood for something where you can ride horses and explore, and I have always meant to go back and see the Shivering Isles content that I never got to back in the day. Also, I was hoping this could be something to kind of play with one of my kids who likes horse riding but is too young to play anything complicated or that requires reading.

I installed a bunch of mods for the graphics, UI, alternate start, persuasion system overhaul, etc, and then I played it and was surprised by how poorly this game has aged. Maybe I would have started enjoying it if I just kept at it and allowed myself to get immersed in the world again, but I clearly needed more mods for that. Like, a lot more. I just wasn't enjoying it, and I kept thinking that I have so many other open world games that I'd rather play and that won't require tons of mods to be enjoyable.

I did get to experience the funny town guard AI when I punched someone and then jumped into the water and found some underwater stuff including a shipwreck (added by some underwater content mod), and then got suddenly stopped mid-swim by a guard who had found me out in the ocean.

I remember really enjoying this back when I first played it (I heavily modded it back then, too). I think nearly all of my enjoyment was from the sense of exploration, which is why it just isn't as fun this time. Also the combat and persuasion and leveling mechanics are just awful. If I really wanted an Elder Scrolls game, I suppose I should replay Skyrim instead, which was an improvement in all these areas.

How long you played: 2 hours
Reason for abandoning: Pissed me off

This has factors that should make me happy. It's a turn-based strategy game with real-time combat and lets you turn into a freakin' dragon to shift the tide of battle. Why am I abandoning it then?

It partly has to do with my own mistake - which wouldn't be too much of a setback on its own. Accidentally clicked "retreat" which caused a massive loss in my forces and shafted me. Then realized I hadn't saved for the last hour. Oops. Normally I'd take it in stride and load up that save in question, but then there is the other factor...

I don't take well to being insulted in games (unless it is genuinely funny), especially by characters I'm expected to rely on and respect. The game comes right out the gate by presenting you as the only hope for a peaceful future for the empire and the generals (except for Scarlett, she's cool) denigrate you to your face. We're going there? So I'm the saving grace of an empire that left me by the wayside and you come crawling to me only to spit at my feet. You are seriously going to poke the half-dragon monstrosity in the eye right at the outset? Not only that but the wizard tells me that the technology and foundation for our entire campaign is based on the contributions of the asshole who murdered my mother? Where is the "I leave the empire to burn itself to cinders while I watch" option?

I'm not the only person annoyed by this. Others voice complaints on forums from what I've seen and the response generally is:

"They are caricatures and are supposed to be funny with how over-the-top they are."

Are they? I'm not laughing. It's stupid that this bothers me so much but when I look for excuses not to play something its time to say goodbye. Uninstalling for now. Maybe I'll give it another look later this year.

Game: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.
Platform: PS3.
Difficulty: Normal.
Playtime: 1:00 hour.
Reason for abandoning: Difficulty spike, boring.

This is a short third-person shooter/brawler based on the Warhammer universe. It looks ok and plays smoothly, although could be better for a 2011 game. The story is pretty dull, an probably only of interest for a fan of the universe (not me).

Around Chapter 3 I struck a difficulty spike, and there's no option to drop the difficulty. Since I wasn't enjoying it very much anyway, I decided to abandon it. Wish I'd played on Easy.

Played for about 20 minutes. Abandoning after around 10 deaths.

I actually like the concept behind this game, but it feels too unpolished and clunky to be anything more than that - a concept. This is a shooter in which your gun behaves like an actual gun - the magazine has to be filled up manually, you need to release the safety, to reload you need to eject one magazine, and then replace it manually with another... which you hopefully remembered to fill with bullets in the first place, because otherwise you're in trouble!

The game seems to have a semblance of a plot, or at least a setting, and what I found of it (2 of 11 tapes) promised an interesting premise... too bad you die from any amount of damage, and that the flying drone enemies have the annoying tendency to attack you from an angle you can't see!

It seems like playing this any longer wouldn't actually show me anything else, and the key bindings are very unintuitive and weird - I assume on purpose - so getting better at the game would require me to learn all of them... and frankly, that feels like work.

Great concept, but not enjoyable enough for me.

I've played this for around 90 minutes.

Reason for quitting: gets pretty grindy pretty fast, skill progression isn't very engaging.

Bardbarian feels and plays like the Flash games of yore. You'd have an idea for a game loop, you'd put together some decent levelling and ask the player to pretty much rinse and repeat his way to eventual victory. I used to really like these sort of games.

While the initial hook for Bardbarian is pretty cool - basically you assemble a squad of heroes and move around the arena in a weird tower-defense/shmup hybrid of defending from advancing enemies while dodging their projectiles - it doesn't really go anywhere from there. You have three basic spells you can use to augment your speed, damage and put an energy shield on units - and these can only be upgraded to last longer. New units get unlocked as you move through the campaign, and you can get several of them by playing the game's alternate Survival and Endless Runner sections. It takes a pretty good score in either to get to the unlock, though.

While most games of its kind provide a steady rate of improvement, Bardbarian quickly moves into grindy territory, as you find yourself stuck on the same level a few times in a row, despite buying out several upgrades in the meantime. While not a bad game, I just felt like it was starting to waste my time - and to complete it, I'd have to play it roughly four times as long as I did so far (at least according to HowLongToBeat). It doesn't seem to be worth the effort.

This copy has been a gift from one of the users at BGG - I can't remember which giveaway I won it at, though, apologies! Anyway, thanks for this, the first hour was really fun

This game has already been entered to this list with a far more profound reasoning than I could give after 20 minutes of Play: Kingdom

I never saw the appeal of the tower defense genre and I'm also no big fan of RTS games. Kingdom is a mix of both. To do well, you need to plan ahead for what expects you. After two short unsuccessful tries, I read a beginner's guide and immediately decided that I have zero interest in following a grindy cookie cutter recipe disguised as a game.

Welcome to the wonderful world of mid-life crisis, where everything sucks and almost anything becomes painfully boring within seconds.

So, I'm absolutely sure many people will love this. But nowadays, it takes a lot to entertain me, and even then it doesn't always work. Don't take this entry as a sign you should avoid the game.
