At first I thought about making a historical GeekList about all Nippon Ichi titles, but I quickly realized there are dozens I know nothing about, so I thought it best to just talk about the particular games in my collection.

Nippon Ichi is a relatively "niche" developer located in Gifu, Japan. Their most well known series is Disgaea, which is my favorite series, as a lot of you probably are aware.

My first Nippon Ichi game purchase was Rhapsody for the PS1, but it wasn't until the first Disgaea release that they became a studio I would obsess over.

For the releases, NA = North American, JP = Japanese, and WW = World Wide.

Oh man, I need to get the cover art of this game scanned.

Rhapsody is a cutesy RPG where you play as a girl named Cornet. She and her puppet friend Kururu are on a quest to rescue Prince Ferdinand, who was turned to stone by the evil witch Marjoly.

The game plays a lot like a traditional turn based RPG, but the battles have a hint of tactical positioning to them. You explore around the world, and go into random battles that play like mini tactical battles.

The story is super cutesy and has musical cut scenes every so often, which can be played in Japanese or English in the North American release.

This is the first game in the "Marl's Kingdom" series.

Other releases I own:

Another one I need to scan.

I didn't buy this game when it was released, I think I may have bought it in Japan in 2005.

This is the 3rd game in the "Marl's Kingdom" series, and never came to North America.

I played it for a couple of hours, but the language barrier made it a bit difficult to keep going.

I knew nothing about this game going into it, except that it was a tactics RPG and had some anime styled characters.

After several hours of playing it, I realized that this is my new favorite game of all time, knocking Final Fantasy Tactics out of the spot it held for years.

This game started my obsession with Nippon Ichi, which would consume me for years to come (and still partially does).

Other releases I own:

2003 - JP PS2
2007 - NA PSP
2008 - NA DS
2016 - WW Steam

The PSP version of Disgaea has a ton of extra content, and also fixes one of the major issues of the original game, the inconsistent voice acting. In the original PS2 release, the battle voices were mixed between Japanese and English, regardless of your chosen language in the settings. The PSP version fixed this.

I believe I bought this game when it first came out in North America, as I was looking for a game similar in style to Final Fantasy Tactics.

Interestingly enough, La Pucelle came out a year before Disgaea in Japan, but was brought to North America in 2004, a year later than Disgaea's release in North America. I think the popularity of Disgaea helped this game get a North American release.

La Pucelle was definitely Nippon Ichi's groundwork for Disgaea, and a some characteristics about the game are still around in Disgaea games, including the Eringya (mushroom) enemy types. La Pucelle characters are also often times secret bonus characters in other Nippon Ichi titles.

Playing it after Disgaea was a bit difficult, as it seems like Disgaea improved upon the mechanics quite a bit.

Another tactics RPG by Nippon Ichi?! SOLD! This came out just a couple months after La Pucelle, in North America anyway. They were years apart in Japan.

At first, I had a really hard time liking Phantom Brave. It was a tactics RPG, but it was so different from Disgaea, and other games of the type. It featured a circular movement mechanic, and you had to possess random objects around the map to bring characters into battle. The objects you chose drastically affected how strong or fast they were.

After I got over the fact that the game wasn't like Disgaea, I started to like it a lot more. I liked the story and characters quite a bit, although it wasn't nearly as humorous as I was used to from Disgaea.

This game was another tactics RPG, and one that kind of blended Disgaea and Phantom Brave together a bit more. It also introduced vehicles.

I don't remember much about this game, but I do remember enjoying it quite a bit when it first came out.

This game is also the first appearance of Asagi, the girl in my avatar. Apparently she was supposed to be the main character of a Nippon Ichi game, but Makai Kingdom was made insead, with Zetta as the main character.

However, news just surfaced recently that Makai Wars is actually being made, in which Asagi will be a main character! Unfortunately it's a mobile game in Japan.

By the time Disgaea 2 was in the works, I was a diehard Disgaea fan. I was also really excited that Nippon Ichi was making another Disgaea title, instead of another random tactics RPG, like it seemed like they were doing for years.

I scoured the internet for news about Disgaea 2 before it released, scrutinizing screenshots, and dissecting videos. I couldn't want for the North American release, so I imported the game from Japan. I probably put a good 60 or 70 hours into the Japanese PS2 edition before I finally put it down to wait for the local release.

Disgaea 2 had a lot of improvements over the original game, but it also had a weird felony system that I didn't care for very much. Getting felonies attached to your character would give them 1% bonus EXP per felony, and it was capped at 300 per character.

Overall the story wasn't as good as the first game, but wasn't bad at all.

Other releases I own:

Similar to Disgaea 1, the PSP version of Disgaea 2 has a TON of extra content.

After Disgaea 2, Nippon Ichi decided to go back to the new IP games, and Soul Nomad was born. While not a bad game, I just couldn't get into it as much as some of their other games. Soul Nomad featured a generic non named male or female main character, which was a big change from their last several games.

This game introduced the characer Gig, who becomes a bonus character in lots of other games.

Closing out their spree of PS2 games (at least in North America), Nippon Ichi released GrimGrimoire, a game co-developed by Nippon Ichi and Vanillaware.

GrimGrimoire is a beautiful game where you can command little characters to move around the screen in a real time strategy game, a big change from previous Nippon Ichi titles.

I never did finish the game, but I did enjoy what I played of it.

2008 - JP PS3

Continuing the success of the Disgaea series, Nippon Ichi launched Disgaea 3. Like 2, I followed the news closely and imported the game from Japan while waiting on the local release, the special edition to boot.

Unlike 2, I actually finished the game completely in Japanese. I wasn't too sure what was going on in the story, as my Japanese language knowledge was sub par, but I did really enjoy the game.

When I re-played it in English, I realized that I liked the story a bit better than Disgaea 2, but still not as much as the first game. Mao and the wacky characters of Disgaea 3 felt more like the original game, and the opposite land of deliquents and honor students was pretty comical.

Disgaea 3 was also the first game to have DLC, and I admit I spent a lot of extra money on these games.

Due to the popularity of the Disgaea series, Nippon Ichi decided to try a spin-off game featuring the Prinny from Disgaea.

The Prinny games are side scrolling action games similar to old NES/SNES games. You had 99 lives to finish the game, and it was a really difficult game.

I didn't really care for the game much, and I hated the idea of having limited lives. I never did finish the game, or even get very far into it.

Finally back on track, Nippon Ichi releases Disgaea 4, the best Disgaea to come along since the first game. I'm not positive, but I believe this was the first Disgaea game to use high definition sprites. There were even some jokes about it with some bonus characters that were in low resolution.

I imported the special edition from Japan again, and finished the game in Japanese.

A direct sequel to Disgaea 1?! Whoa!!!

I feel like this game wasn't as well received as it should have been, but I really liked it. I guess people felt it the story was a let down after the original game, but I liked it quite a bit.

This game introduced one of the best features ever in a Disgaea game, the Cheat Shop. The Cheat Shop let you do things like set the enemy difficulty, from 1 to 20 (instead of having to pass bills in the senate), and choosing to give yourself more EXP than money, or vice versus with fancy sliders.

When they re-released Disgaea 4 for the Vita, they put the Cheat Shop in it, which goes to show how great of an idea it was. ^___^

I really wish this game would have been released on a handheld, but it was stuck on the PS3.

Other versions I own:

I ended up imported the special edition of this game from Japan, but I wasn't super impressed by the game. When it came out in America, I bought the special edition again, almost out of habit, but never really got anywhere in the game. It wasn't bad, just wasn't all that great either. It's an action RPG where run around beating up enemies in swamps.

The game came out at the end of the PS3's life cycle, so that might have been one of the reasons I didn't put all that much time into it. I was already in a PS4 mindset and wanted to play fancy new PS4 games.

This was a very weird game. I couldn't really get into it, as the controls were pretty difficult. It was a pretty cool looking game anyway. I think it suffered by having a title nobody could pronounce.

To be honest, I'm not even sure why I bought this, as I didn't care enough about The Guided Fate Paradox to really want the sequel. I guess I just wanted to support Nippon Ichi so they'd keep releasing Disgaea games. I never played it.

2015 - JP PS4

It worked! They made another Disgaea. As per usual, I imported the special edition from Japan, and played the crap out of it. Nippon Ichi surpassed Disgaea 4 with this game. Game play wise, Disgaea 5 is by far the best in the series, and the story is fantastic as well. I think nostalgia over the original game's characters is all that is keeping Disgaea 5 from being my favorite game in the series.

This game introduced some great new features, such as the squads, the exploration shuttles, the board game character worlds, and quests. There is so much to do in this game, that it's hard to keep track of what all I'm working on.

I'm currently playing through this game for the 3rd time, now on the Switch.

Other versions I own:

2015 - NA PS4
2017 - NA Switch
