I've been playing Record Keeper on and off for a few months now, but I played it a lot this week. For me to advance further in the Realms Dungeons, I need to have a few options for party members able to take on difficulty levels approaching 50, which until now I've left to characters that have broken the first level cap.

Taking on my first Persona game. So far, I've very much enjoyed it. I'm playing the Vita version, and it looks great. I love the inclusion of the anime cutscenes, and the overall style of the game is great. There's a healthy amount of humor and intrigue, and it feels part RPG and part visual novel. Still a long way to go, but I'm enjoying.

Quite enjoying this as Emily.

Barely using any of the powers. Just started using the teleport ability, after getting halfway through the game. Kind of like it that way.

Fun story. I enjoy the twists and stuff. The level design is really cool.

I wish the Styx games had combat like this. Many times, I've just reloaded after combat, but being able to run away or fight like a normal game is a godsend.

This game is surprisingly fun. Fast paced truck jumping in insane environments. Don't touch the ground or any non-truck obstacle or you instantly lose. I die and quickly restart so many times, it reminds me of Super Meat Boy, but first person and with trucks.

Jumping a huge pile-up of trucks (they tend to explode, too):

Many fans of the Anno series call this a dumbed down failure. I never really played any of the previous Anno games. I quit Anno 1503 after one or two hours. Building up pre-defined production chains efficiently under time pressure isn't something I'm looking for in games. Too close to work.

Luckily, I enjoy Anno 2205. I must be part of the dumbed down target Group. Building up cities casually, reaching new territories, launching your own spaceship to the moon. All this is pleasant achievement hunting likely to hook me in front of the monitor for many hours to come. The battles are removed into separate game areas that don't infringe your cities. I'm not yet into the stock market or the frontier DLC. These parts sound like potential dangers for progress.

I am trying to try out and run through some smaller bundle games games I have had backlogged for a while to thin the herd when it comes to what I have left to play. With not much interesting holding my attention on TV at night due to everything skipping trying to compete with the Winter Olympics I spent way more time gaming in the past week for sure. I probably will this week as well.

I installed 12 is Better Than 6 over the weekend to give it a shot. I really liked Hotline Miami and this gives off a very similar vibe. The problem is the controls aren't as tight at HM and the weapon firing systems were driving me crazy. The fact that there was another step between firing each bullet and you had to reload each bullet individually for all weapons may be historically accurate it isn't fun. It make it feel worse still when the AI can spray bullets at rates that are basically impossible for the player. I also felt that the AI pathing still needed work, they got hung up on doors and obstacles a bunch. It ended up being a lot of little things that bugged me piling up that made me decide to uninstall it after a few hours (finished 2.5 of 5 chapters) rather than irritate myself with it further. This one was my first abandoned game of the year.

I started Punch Club last night, played a few hours and it also met the fate of the uninstall. I really don't like the player regression in it. It is just a mechanic to make the game longer and more grindy for no real reason, in my opinion. Having tons of stuff to do and while you do anything but train having your power speed and stamina drain is just annoying. I also don't get why all the fights are just automatically run instead of at least having an actual fighting system in the game. Having a long grind in a game that literally plays itself for the training and the fighting is kind of mindboggling to me and I was left trying to figure out what part was supposed to be fun. My second abandoned game of the year.

I played a bit of Dead in Bermuda and it is a decent "party survival" game but I thin I will have to be in the mood for that type of game to really dig into it, and last week I wasn't in that mood. I left it installed and will go back to it at some point though.

I finished up with Stories: The Path of Destinies this past weekend. It was really solid and when I stopped last week I actually was only one playthrough away from the final ending and the win. It is a really solid game overall, with the storybook element and the narration being the extreme high points.

I also finished my playthrough of Grim Legends 3: The Dark City and it was one of the better Artifex games I have played, and I have played a bunch of them. Since I had fun with that one I would pull another one out of the backlog as well. I gave Demon Hunter 2: New Chapter a run and it wasn't as good. The story was a little wonky and there were a lot of re-hashed minigames from previous Artifex titles. I still finished it bit it is a mid-tier game from the publisher's library.

So I was playing this last night for a little bit, and my wife said "this game is really pretty, I love all the beautiful colors."

I thought for a minute, "hey, my wife might actually want to play this game co-op."

Then I thought about it more, and realized she wouldn't like it at all. The way combat and damage is done in this game would be really offputting to people nowadays. In fact, it was weird back in 1993 as well, but I guess as kids we just got used to it more.

Hitting an enemy, and having the damage and hit reaction happen 2 seconds later would throw my wife off, and she would probably not like waiting for the 100% timer either.

I decided it would be best to just not even bother.

I actually have hopes that some talented modder will take this game and make it great on the PC. In fact, I think I'll make a post about that in general gaming.

Over 60 hours into my oddball completionist play through. Close to level 34.
I've essentially just been moving around the map methodically completing side quests, looting, exploring and ignoring the main quest. I just finished off the Snake because I was feeling somewhat guilty at neglecting the main story.
Hoarding all the legendary weapons I have, for some reason. I picked up the deluxe version of this game so I still use the legendary sickle sword that came with that version and then a flaming staff exclusively. I picked up the season pass on sale for the DLC and ended up with more legendary stuff which I don't use. Need to sell some of it off but I just cant seem to part with it.
Need carbon crystal for crafting!

I've been playing this excellent typing game lately. It's kind of an RPG type game with a nice aesthetic and some light puzzles, where you fight bug enemies by typing at them and typing words to interact with different parts of the environment. You get a number of different abilities and different types of attacks throughout the game. The game has 'adaptive difficulty', which is supposed to keep the game challenging at all times, and it really does. Typing of the Dead was fun, but easy. In this game, I've encountered crazy numbers of enemies to fight off at some points, all moving at a pretty decent pace, and if a single bug reaches you, you die.

Video Game: Epistory

Fun game, and good typing game! I plan on finishing it soon.

Well, howdy folks! 's been a while! When did I last post here about the games I was playing, about Christmas time, I think? Quite a while ago!

Eh, I'm not entirely sure what happened. Got a bit wrapped up in my own life and playing games without reporting progress on them, I guess.

I'll start with the most recent thing I've played, the game shown on the left, played it... only half an hour ago? Just figured I'd give my SNES a quick go, played a short "season" of the rumble mode. I played as Raphael.

The results at the end of each round of the 2018 season:

Round 1

Suzulu - 10 pts
Raphael - 9 pts
Hodja - 7 pts
Surf - 5 pts
Frank - 3 pts
Sumo San - 1 pt
Helmut - 0 pts
Biff - 0 pts

Round 2

Hodja - 17 pts
Suzulu - 17 pts
Raphael - 14 pts
Surf - 14 pts
Sumo San - 4 pts
Frank - 3 pts
Helmut - 1 pt
Biff - 0 pts

Round 3

Suzulu - 26 pts
Hodja - 24 pts
Surf - 19 pts
Raphael - 17 pts
Sumo San - 14 pts
Frank - 3 pts
Helmut - 2 pts
Biff - 0 pts

Round 4

Suzulu - 31 pts
Raphael - 27 pts
Hodja - 27 pts
Sumo San - 23 pts
Surf - 19 pts
Frank - 10 pts
Helmut - 3 pts
Biff - 0 pts

And finally, Round 5

1st - Raphael - 36 pts
2nd - Suzulu - 34 pts
3rd - Sumo San - 30 pts
4th - Hodja - 27 pts
5th - Surf - 20 pts
6th - Frank - 15 pts
7th - Helmut - 13 pts
8th - Biff - 0 pts

I WIN. cool

Anyway...

The games I've been playing between Christmas and having played Street Racer just there:

Metroid Prime
Got about 50% of the items and 70-80% of the data entries. Didn't get many of the artifacts. Can't tell you why but I ended up losing my momentum in the end. Liked the first excursion of the Chozo Ruins and the Research Lab Hydra the best.

TimeSplitters 2
Completed on GameCube, can't remember if that was the tail end of December or early January. I swear the GameCube version is way, way easier than the Xbox version. The Xbox version I had some hassle beating the last two story levels; here, no problem. In fact - this amuses me - in the first week of playing the GameCube version I unlocked about as much stuff as I've unlocked in the Xbox version, which I've had for years. Weird.

The Sims 3 (Console)
The console version has some major flaws... and yet I've played a lot of it already this year. In fact the family I'm playing at the moment, I've been watching over for fifteen game years. Take a moment, let that sink in.

F**k the elusive deathfish.

Thrillville Off The Rails
Been getting kicks from arguing with the guests and generally trying to make them feel uncomfortable, mostly by randomly trying to hug them and hitting on their other half. It was only recently I discovered the last gold bar in the Western shooting game. Maybe it was very well hidden; maybe I'm a dimwit.

SoulCalibur II
The GameCube version (yay, Link!). Like with TimeSplitters, I swear the Weapon Master mode is easier on GameCube than Xbox. Then again, I made it to Chapter 8... then ran out of momentum.

F**k Voldo.

Sentient
Holy heck, I actually got an ending that wasn't the worst! I accomplished enough to get access to the docks, then discovered
Spoiler (click to reveal)
you could hijack the senator's yacht and fly off to safety.

Aralon: Sword and Shadow
Made a Mage, got up to about level 23... then ran out of momentum.

Rock Band 2
Well... I know that last time out I said I hated this game. Since then I've made peace:
1) The setlist doesn't bother me as much as it did before.
2) Last time out I was missing a f**kton of notes, and I felt it was the game's fault. Since then, I think I've resolved the problem. After many attempts at recalibration, I finally found a workable solution. I still miss some notes, but afaict that's just me actually missing the notes now.
3) I've got Hyperspeed mode on.
4) Sometimes I just stick on "No Fail" and "Performance Mode", and watch my lil' virtual band play away to a bassless rendition of something like "Drain You" by Nirvana. That's been fun too.

Two things about song difficulties in the game:
1) "PDA" by Interpol has Guitar 3, Bass 2, Drums 3 and Vocals 3, but Band 0? "Man in the Box" is Guitar 1, Bass 0, Drums 1, Vocals 0, and Band 1! Eh?
2) "Eye of the Tiger" a Guitar 0 song? Really?

Anyway, I've been trying to make up a fictional band to take to stardom. My ideas probably suck. Also, do you know how hard it is to make up a halfway decent band name? They've all been taken!

Anyway, the band I've made are called Roarqual, they formed in 2006 in Boston, and they play energetic, upbeat metal music, somewhere between heavy metal and thrash metal. Songs tend to be positive, clean vocals, lyrics mostly focused on the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Think something a little like "Hit the Lights" or "Whiplash" by Metallica, or possibly even "Living After Midnight" by Judas Priest.

Most recently they won a competition that got them a van! Will they achieve international superstardom? Er... we'll find out!

I haven't played Guacamelee in a long time, but lately my boys and I have been playing the Super Turbo Championship edition, and I had forgotten just how good this game is. In the newer Super Turbo Champ edition, it now goes up to 4 player co-op, and the co-op is very similar to that in Rayman Origin/Legends, with a death countdown added until players can respawn from being a bubble. It's a lot of fun. There are some great skins in the Steam Workshop, too, like Shovel Knight, with shoveling animations instead of punching, which is great. My 7 yr old loves Shovel Knight, so he's getting a kick out of it!

This was already on my radar after seeing it a few months back - YellowLab's review convinced me to give it a go since it was on sale for a few bucks off. Just finished the first area and got Vengeful Spirit after a couple hours of careful exploring.

I've read various comments that are mildly critical of the game's exploration system, but I think I rather like it. I especially like the limited minimap, which is rather low-res and doesn't update until you hit a rest bench. That keeps my attention on my surroundings instead of just letting the automapper do all the work and constantly checking it. An ability to add custom notes/pins would be nice, but I don't mind taking side notes on paper.

Looking good so far.

Started this up, still in the prologue meeting all of the other characters. The setting is certainly an interesting contrast with the first game - curious to see how that shapes up.

Also started a challenge run of Final Fantasy VII that I expect to be pretty short. I plan to complete the game using Cloud, Barret, and Tifa as my main party, with strict limits on encounters. I will fight some encounters that are necessary to learn Enemy Skills, or yield helpful stolen items. Other than that, I am planning to grind the Mithril Mines to unlock Level 3 limit breaks for Cloud and Barret (first time passing through). I also plan to kill a handful of Cactaurs during the Corel prison sequence, and morph about 15 power sources for Tifa right after finishing the Temple of the Ancients.

This should make the last couple of boss fights in Midgar somewhat challenging, normalize the difficulty for a few boss-fights afterward, and then have everything be somewhat challenging starting with the Materia Keeper. I haven't researched the numbers to know exactly what will happen with leveling, but I plan to finish Disc 1 with an average party level of 28 or lower, and Disc 2 with an average party level of 40 or lower.

I don't plan to recruit either of the optional character or really do any materia growth outside of some HP plusses that I assume will go from 10 to 20 at some point.

Also want to start Yakuza Kiwami this week.

Not so much playing as learning. It's brand-new to me, and I'm about a third of the way into the manual, though I've played around with a couple of the DLC scenarios.

I already prefer PoN to Victoria: Revolutions, if only because PoN is turn-based and does better with the military aspect of things (maybe with the economic aspect and others too, but I don't know that yet).

The only other AGEOD game I own is Civil War II, and I'm learning that at the same time--so far switching back and forth as the mood strikes. Sometimes the American Civil War seems all too familiar to me--I've read a lot about it over the years--so I look for other conflicts in the same time period. PoN delivers that nicely.

The various subsystems that make up the game are overwhelming right now. It's hard enough to effectively manage armies and fleets, but on top of that there's resource gathering, trade, diplomacy, colonization, and more. I wish there were more extensive tutorials--entire scenarios to provide practice just in trade, just in colonization, etc. The existing tutorials introduce the interface but don't do much more. The manual gives a lot of good information but not much guidance in how to put it into practice.

My overall impression is that PoN is like Imperialism, only much bigger and more complex. And frankly, Imperialism was a bit too complex and difficult for me; I had trouble keeping track of (and staying awake for) all the commodity trading, and then I couldn't figure out how to handle war either. That doesn't bode well for this new venture into PoN. But oh well; I'll give it a try.

Oddly, the PoN scenarios (there are three or four DLC packs) are all heavily weighted toward the military aspect. In the scenarios, you don't worry about developing your country as a world power; you just conduct the war set before you. That's right up my alley. I just hope I don't end up playing only the scenarios and skipping the campaigns.

Also working on this. Hard to tell, but judging by my completion percentage, I probably have just 5 levels left. Should be done in the week.

Someone at work picked this up after watching a GDC talk by the creator and has got a small contingent of people playing it. It's kind of like a minimalist 2D ROcket League with projectiles. It's quite a stressful game to play since there is so much going on and you're constantly trying to outplay your opponent.

I had some friends over and we played a combination of Rocket League, Towerfall, SpeedRunners, and Starwhal. Of the lot, I really love playing Towerfall and highly recommend it to anyone interested in couch multiplayer!

I'm aching for my course to be done at the end of March so I can start digging into some games...the backlog keeps growing!!

Continuing to enjoy Mass Effect 3, although the firefights are very firefighty which is not necessarily my ideal for an RPG. On the other hand, Mordin Solus singing Gilbert and Sullivan *IS* my ideal for an RPG. He did a Major General parody in Mass Effect 2, and in Mass Effect 3, he sings this Pirate King parody:

It makes me smile.

For the first time in a while, we had a 4-VGGer squad in Warframe; me, Rudy, Marius, and Luis. We had run a few relics previous, and then we did some apothic missions. Next time, mutagen samples.

Played some Renegade Ops DLC with Ken tonight, and we beat a pair of levels. The DLC swaps the fire villain for an ice villain, so it's all the same stuff, just blue instead of red.

I've had this game on my backlog for years, so thought I'd better get around to playing it before the sequel appears and spoils the story for me. I'm having to play on easy, as I haven't got the patience for the stealth aspects of the game. Really good so far.

My SO had this as a nostalgia game, so we bought a used copy again and are playing it a bit. It's a very decent game, and I don't see why it sold so badly as it apparently did.

My SO also wanted to play a horror game, so I found this in my Wii collection and we started to have a go at this. 90 minutes in, it's actually better at the horror scenes than the successor for the Wii U (as far as I can see now, at least).

However, I must say that I will probably be a bit annoyed at the controls. My some reason or another, you use the Wiimote for an up-down control of the flashlight, but the nunchuk thumbstick for a left-right movement. Why? Why?
