Used a mod for a controller (the Steam version only lets you use the keyboard!) and mapped it for GTA V controls. Still that didnt mean it was all GTA V. I was a little surprised to find out I couldnt swim only drown and that police cars cannot be stolen at all times. I'm walking sideways more than forward and although I'm quite a ways in, I'm not really understanding the weapons.

Mostly though, I amazed at how the game is basically the same. The cars and the characters -- even some of the radio personalities. I'm thinking of watching the 2015 movie about Grand Theft Auto, The Gamechangers, or maybe the 1977 movie Grand Theft Auto to see if there's inspiration there.

I'm continuing my playthrough of the original Neverwinter Nights whilst I await my pc returning to the UK. It runs pretty well on my craptop, and I'm now onto chapter 2.
This week I'm also going to learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons using the Roll20 software. Should be interesting.

Started playing this one for the Spring game-club event.

Makes a great first impression, polished and well-written. The first puzzle stumped me, but the other folks participating in the event told me that if I took a step back from things it would probably jump out at me. Later, when I was not even playing the game, I thought to myself, "what would jump out at me?," and then the solution became obvious.

laugh

Plan to wrap-up Yakuza Kiwami over the next couple of days, and then push onward in Final Fantasy IX as well.

I don't know what I want out of this game, but I don't think it's quite what the game provides. Apparently I'm now going to talk through it, at length, in an attempt to figure it out

The concept is, if somewhat cliche, interesting: the player character is the sole non-evacuated survivor of a Martian colony that has fallen victim to some kind of terrible infection. He must manage the colony resources (fortunately a lot of the production is automated) while trying to recover enough information to escape the colony, all the while trying to keep the ever-worsening hordes of mutant monsters at bay. Perhaps something like an even-more-solitary Parasite Eve with an additional focus on crafting and resource management.

Although on the one hand I have been playing a lot of this game for the last week, on the other, the execution is a bit lackluster. The atmosphere is generally good -- most of the time, you're wandering around in areas in the dark (you do get to carry a flashlight) as your oxygen and temperature supplies slowly dwindle (the life support systems in most of the colony are broken, for reasons, until you fix them). There are mutants wandering around to fight, and in addition to damage (which you can heal via items or sleep), they can also give you "contamination", which gradually gets worse and will eventually kill you (though not, as I understand it, directly). There are supplies of decontamination pills, but they're somewhat limited. Most of your resources can be replenished easily by returning to your base of operations, which is somehow immune to incursions of the infection, but doing so will cost you time, during which infection levels elsewhere will rise. Even keeping the lights and life support on in most areas requires power from the central reactor, which is also (naturally) decaying over time (though it can be maintained). There might be an interesting game of tradeoffs here involving choices about which areas to keep powered, but that doesn't seem to be how the game is intended to be played -- depowering an area kills all its life support, and oddly, though perhaps inevitably, the infection propagates more rapidly in cold and low-oxygen conditions.

One of the main problems, though, is repetition. Once you get out of the central area, which is a few hand-crafted floor layouts, most of the remaining areas of the game consist of fixed-layout entrance floors attached to five or ten procedurally-generated floors (with a few areas of a couple of floors being fixed-layout). The procedural generation works reasonably well, but gives all of the floors the feel of a random dungeon, rather than some coherent area (the hotel interior is very similar to both the shopping mall and the casino). Progress is slower than I'd like (possibly I'm not great at the game) -- unless you're completely unconcerned with looting supplies, it's hard to bring in enough thermal and oxygen tanks to do much more than clear one floor at a time, even assuming that you don't run out of energy (which powers all your weapons) or medical supplies. On top of that, you accumulate fatigue, which must be slept off, and though the random generation seems to guarantee that most areas have beds, until life support is fully restored, sleeping on-site will cost you other resources.

The crafting system, too, is lackluster. Most of the equipment in the game can be researched, allowing you to replicate it and perhaps fabricate a better model. All of this is gated by different tiers of software, though, which you must go find -- tier-1 research software will allow you to design tier-2 equipment, but you can only produce it if you have the tier-2 engineering software to power the 3D printers, and you may need tier-2 supplies from either the gardens or the mines. It doesn't help that most of the tech "trees" are (as of tier 2) completely lackluster. Maybe the tier 3 weapon mods will allow me to trade damage for accuracy or vice versa, but ... I'm twenty hours deep in the game at this point; this is a choice I'd like to have been able to make by now. On top of this, although you need some level of inputs from the garden and mines, almost everything useful to craft requires materials that can only be had from recycling junk from around the colony or from processing the remains of dead mutants, which makes me wonder why I have to make choices about what to have the mining equipment work on (since after two or three cycles I seem to have more of the current tier of minerals than I will ever use, given the other constraints).

There are both hunger and thirst meters, for some reason. I have way more food and drink than I expect to ever need, although it is also true that as of level-2 software, I have no way to make any of it myself (the crops that grow in the gardens are contaminated, although I think they can be eaten in a pinch, if for some reason starvation is a bigger worry than decontamination). In addition, the main character also has to randomly use the restroom sometimes after eating or drinking. Other than a potential distinguishing feature, I don't know what the point of this is. In theory I suppose it might be pressure to make sure you're fed and watered before leaving base, but in practice there are bathrooms all over.

Once the infection reaches a certain level, mutants also periodically invade central control, attempting to destroy the reactor. Central control has automated defenses, which for some reason require a human present to power up. Even when you get an alert that an invasion is on its way, the defenses can't be powered up until the moment mutants arrive and send the base into security lockdown.

I just ... argh.

I guess what I want is for my tech progress to be somehow resource-constrained, rather than "oh hey go to this area to find the next level of upgrade chip, which was spirited away there just before catastrophe hit for ... reasons". It would be nice if there were meaningful choices about which upgrades to pursue in what order (as far as I can tell you always want to go after engineering first, because at least as far as weapons are concerned you can find small supplies of advanced minerals. Garden or mine upgrades next might be a choice; as far as I know there's no reason not to save research to last. And then the cycle repeats, assuming that the mutants haven't overrun areas to the extent that your gear can't deal with them). It's also an irritation to figure out that, in retrospect, I made what seems to be a strictly inferior choice about which objective to pursue five hours ago, and might as a result have made the game unwinnable.

All of that said, I'm probably going to keep poking at this a little more, I guess out of a (probably misplaced) hope that the game might turn a corner at some point.

Getting back into video gaming after my six months retreat. So I've been playing Overwatch with my friends (two of them are even VGGers, *waves at Alex and Andrew*). First few games I felt so out of it, took me a while to get back on track with the game. I don't still feel like I'm completely back on the level I was able to play the game before my long break, but slowly by slowly I'm getting there. I'm spending less time playing games than I used to though.

Anyway, they added a fun new healer while I was gone, and I've been having tons of fun playing Moira, destroying those pesky Genjies that used to destroy me when I mainly played Mercy.

I just sold my old car and am looking for a new car right now. What better occasion to give this game a spin. I don't have the slightest idea how cars work. But a few hours in, I'm at least capable of locating the basic components of cars.

It's a simulator. Gameplay accordingly is more a grind than a challenge. Unless played in the sandbox mode, it takes many hours to unlock the full extent of the game. For now, I don't mind the repetition. It's a relaxing way to forget the daily routine and satisfying when a car leaves your workshop completely repaired.

For now, I postponed my playthrough of Shadowrun Returns. I failed a hacking run two times and currently don't have the persistence to try again and again. Possibly, when the car purchase is done I will get back to Shadowrun.

I picked this up for my android tablet and since it is soooo quick and easy to play I have been playing it repeatedly against teh AI. I splashed out on the first 2 expansions (Gathering Storm and Rebel vs Imperium), but played quite a few games with the base game first.. then a load more with just GS, before getting RVI.

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons -- Back into the fray again in OoS, via the Virtual Console edition on my 2DS. Hunting down the next dungeon, I have made my way to the Sunken City, where I have gotten the Flippers which allow me to finally swim through the deep waters. This section was tough because it was not obvious where I needed to go to actually get to the Sunken City, but some help from ZeldaDungeon.net got me through it. Next it's back into the underworld to do some stuff before advancing any further. Still enjoying this bright, colorful adventure.

Tekken 2 -- Played the PSOne Classics version on my PSP. I was recently on a podcast where I remembered that there was a fighter in the Tekken series who was sort of like Pai from Virtua Fighter, but I did not remember her name. So I fired up T2 to play as Jun. Now, what surprised me is that I thought that Jun was a regular, recurring character in the series, but apparently T2 is her only appearance in the main series of games. So that was pretty surprising. She does fight a bit like Pai, with a lot of combos and spinning attacks. She's a fun character if a bit less flashy than some of the other fighters. I was not able to get past her sub-boss Wang, however. Still, it was fun to beat up some polygons, and I am glad I got this game off of the PSN store as it plays well on the PSP for the most part. There was some slowdown here and there but I think that may have been due to it being a longtime since the PSP was reset.

WWF Betrayal -- GBC cartridge played on my GBA. So my brother send this down to me, as he knows I am a Game Boy fan and of course a wrestling fan. So you can imagine my surprise when I started this game and there is only a roster fo 4 wrestlers: Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, and The Undertaker. I chose SCSA, and we go to cutscene of Austin in the ring against Triple H. The Rock interferes, Austin gives chase, but he is stopped backstage by Vince McMahon who asks for Austin's help to rescue the kidnapped Stephanie McMahon! And then it dawns on me that THQ did make a WWE game which was a beat 'em up and not a wrestling game. So onward I venture as SCSA, beating up referees and ring crew as I give chase to Rock and Triple H to save Stephanie. This reminds me a lot of the Technos Kunio-kun Game Boy game which was released here in the States as Double Dragon II (GB). Ridiculous but ultimately pretty fun ,and there are not a lot of beat 'em ups on GBC platform to begin with.

I played this a decent amount over the weekend, and I have one more night to play it before Yakuza 6 comes out tomorrow.

I'm about 14 hours into the game now. I made a lot of progress since my last status report on the game. I now have my kingdom, several buildings, and several new recruits to head them up.

This game definitely has a lot of Suikoden vibes to it, from the mini skirmish battles, to the castle building and recruiting. I really enjoy searching the world for people to join my cause in games, apparently.

I've had a few pretty exciting big fights and boss showdowns in the game as well. The combat is so much more interesting than the original Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. I feel like I suck at it still, but I'm getting better.

I've also completed 3 of the Dreamer door thingies. These are mini randomized dungeons that have several "floors" to them. The more time you spend in the dreamer world, the more a "Danger" gauge fills up, making the enemies tougher. There are some shrines you can find to reduce the danger gauge, but it takes orbs to do so, which you can only find in the dreamer dungeons. It's an interesting balance of trying to explore to find good items, and not wanting the danger gauge to fill up. At the end of the dungeons is a pretty tough boss. The last one I fought was so difficult that I used up every last healing item I had, and every revive item as well. Roland was my only character left, as the other two were sitting around dead. Somehow I managed to kill the boss and get the dream fragment.

Continuing doing stuff - almost halfway through the game (Career Mode) - but I had some issues today with the game freezing up and starting to act on me... Hopefully it will be better during the week (however despite freezes and crashes, I managed to to progress a bit)

Last night I installed the nude patch - and today I finished the game! Apparently that was all it took for me laugh Another game crossed off my backlog - and it is nice to see my "Tried" list slim down and my "Completed" list slowly grow.
... Yes: I have managed my Steam list into various categories, mainly "Completed", "Tried", "No endgame" (such games as ETS2 and such) and "Games" (the standard category) - as well as a lot of sub-categories ("100%" - for games completed and all achivements done, "Missing Achivemens", "Missing (to complete) DLC) and more).

Was it worth playing XXZ? Well; I don't like Match-3 games much - and I don't like zombie games at all.... but I like nudie-games, but even before the patch was on, it was okay actually... sort of. I am not sure if I would recommend it (even the 16+ version) however.

I've taken a real liking to playing as the Silicoids. Played two games on hard level, yesterday and today, and won both easily. It's quite an advantage being able to colonize planets that are hostile to all other races. The Silicoids have their disadvantages too (they breed slowly and are generally disliked). But because they don't have to keep their planets clean, they enjoy an early industrial boost, some of which can go to research.

I've started through the Awakening expansion to DA:O. So far, so good. It's been easier than the base game thus far, but I don't mind that in the slightest.

22. Video Game: Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time [Average Rating:6.56 Overall Rank:2505]
Video Game: Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time
For iPad Air, ios8

--did more Pinata levels.
Requires internet, or "initially". When you complete that level, you have the opinion to watch an ad to do it again. Not this time angry I can't tell wherein lies the problem... 1) my wireless router is spotty, 2) something is up with my Ipad Air, 3) the app has glitches and issues in code that's causing this, or 4) combo of the above. Once it "misfires", you are NOT given an opportunity to partake in that again

--there was a level that I wanted to try alternative strategies for
Specifically, strategy #4, and my own variant where I just use Sweet Potato, Cherry Bomb, Grapeshot, and imitated Grapeshot
http://plantsvszombies.wikia.com/wiki/Modern_Day_-_Day_37

--leveled up my plants as much as I could
However, we were short on coins. Currently 3,500 or so. Needed 5K coins for the 1-time, limited time seed packets (XP pts specific for each plant), and 3K + 6K to level out the remaining ones that were close to the next level. Not enough coins. As mentioned in bullet #1 above, connection was spotty, although the app did mention that there were no more ads to be viewed at the time

--played more rounds of Inzanity
In the Quest Log. You play 5 levels to get Pinata packs for seed packets. The 5 levels let you pick your own plants, so I use the ones I purchased with real $$ to get to try them out more. They're also unique too, and not just rehashes of the existing levels on the "world map"

--played some levels to add to the Pinata Tracker
It's an in-game counter where you get extra coins and packet seeds from passing regular levels. When it's full, you need to wait for the timer to run out for it to replenish itself, counting down from 12 hours. I was mostly in it for the fun of playing the levels... the usual levels, but see what fun ways I can tackle them

--Vase Breaker
Browsing online, I was initially shocked when I realized I never played this mode with the world themes of Far Future and Big Wave Beach. Then I confirmed these were only in the Chinese version. Beat level 15 in endless mode (which would be the milestone to unlock a 3rd boost, but it's been unlocked from a previous profiles. That feature is still unlocked, but free access to the levels, and my completion streak got reset when I switched off from my Ipod Touch 5 to this here my Ipad Air)

.

--tried to view some ads for more coins.
Why not for old time's sake? I was streaming a show anyways.
Didn't work. See bullet points #1 and #3 above

--played 3 games of Battlez
I had the Gauntlets (this mode's "admission ticket") to do so beyond the initial "1 free every 4 hours". This is basically a mode where you try to get a high score, and it compares your score against a randomly picked human (and I suspect NPC dummy player) to see who won. Got some prizes on the Rewards Streak. Again... got more messages that internet was spotty

--took screenshots of my last known ranking in Battlez
--took screenshots of my plants, including their current levels

.

The 2nd section are the activities that seem out of place. Reason?

I finally went ahead and deleted the game/app
Funny thing is, I didn't even know where it was. I just opened it using the app search feature in ios8. Turns out, it's on page 4. Amusing thing was, early on, I deliberately left it off the first 2 pages as a deterrent to playing it too much

The sad thing is, I was gunning on deleting it about 3 days ago, but.. I semi-hesitated, but I figured there wasn't that much harm. For the latter, I wasn't that far off, as even though I did play the (daily) Pinata Party level, my play time was waning at that point.

The last section was a bit of a "last meal", "proper sendoff" for this game, as deleting it means we're serious. Sure, I can always reinstall it, but that's one hurdle there. Then there's also not being sure what got retained (locally or EA's servers), vs. what I'd lose. AFAIK, all of my plants purchased with real $$ will be available, but real $$ purchases for in-game currency/tickets/"tokens", and plants purchased with gems will not be available.

It's odd b/c I had to contend with quite a few psychological barriers playing this game throughout the years, and 3 days ago when I seriously considered deleting it.

Despite putting it on hiatus twice, (first played in 2013, 1st hiatus in 2014, and a 2nd hiatus around 2016), I had a LOT of fun with this game. I only spent $55, so that's comparable and affordable to a old school AAA/premium game.

Now what? Without the ability to "pick up the ipad and just play", we'll see. More time should abound, as even though I estimate spending 10 min. to 1.25 hours a day on this (average probably around 30 minutes), it still adds up. I still have a backlog of other iOS games (on both my Ipad and Ipod Touch 5), Android phone, PC/Steam, and Wii.

YES!!!! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!

I'm surprised I had the discipline to actually scan the front and back covers (pending) for VGG before firing up the game. Hopefully by tomorrow this will not have a placeholder image.

I've played maybe 2 hours so far, and finally got past the part that's essentially the demo, haha.

So far I'm really liking how the leveling system works. Instead of getting some kind of currency and unlocking abilities, you gain points in several different categories. Stat upgrades require combinations of certain types of points. Attack damage requires the red points (not sure what they're called quite yet) to upgrade. Health requires red and one other color's points to upgrade.

The fights with random thugs around the city are a bit more fluid. You don't go into a cut scene before each one like other games. The one weird thing is the guys don't apologize afterwards then limp off. They actually just disappear into thin air. I don't like that change much. I kind of liked watching them wimper off after getting their comeuppance. Items and money drop in the middle of battle, rather than being rewards afterwards.

edit: woot, my cover image was approved. It's still pending as a rep image, but that shouldn't take long.

Inspired by Grimwold (above), and having enjoyed Through the Ages pretty well, I picked this up on Steam, plus the first two expansions.

I think I like this more than TTA, it's not as difficult, and there's no direct screwage. Although the interface isn't quite as good as TTA's.

I've been playing with goals but no takeovers. This seems to work quite nicely. Played 3-4 games and won most of them on Medium. Need to try against the hard AI next.
