Welcome to the
1 Player Guild's Collective Acquisition Disorder
May 2018 Edition

"Nobody ever said you have to actually play all these games!"

This GeekList exists so that all of us can discuss our recent purchases and share the fun we have braking our wallets. So, if you purchased a game, got it in a trade or even backed a Kickstarter this month, please share it with us! Other things are also welcome as long as they have something to do with the hobby (e.g. paints, craft materials or tools etc.)

Please just post one item for all your purchases in any month. You can always change the game you added as your main entry at a later date, if you wish.

If you need help on how to make your item look nice(r) please see the Forum Formatting Guide and the Tricks of the Geek GeekList.

Here are the rules:
Microbadge: Challenge Completed! You may only add one item per month but discuss an unlimited number of games in it.
Microbadge: Challenge Completed! Be excellent to each other.
Microbadge: Challenge Failed! Please refrain from posting links to Kickstarter campaigns to keep us in line with BGG's rules.

Most importantly:
Have fun!

Constructive criticism is absolutely welcome as there's always room for improvement. This feature is new and I'm sure that I'm going to make some changes/adjustments along the way. I'm determined to make this a place everyone of us can enjoy.

I traded a box of games that weren't hitting the table at all or but it only once and were meh to get New Bedford, Last Will and Rocky Road à la Mode. I felt bad as I taped up that large box for shipping but I really want to try out New Bedford and Last Will. Rocky Road a la Mode was the only decent game I could find amid the offerings that "equaled" the exchange. I don't know how or if I can find a way to play that solo.

My monthly browsing of Kickstarter left me backing Dual Powers. I still have to make up my mind about The City of Kings expansions and Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden.

Last month I was briefly interested in Zombicide: Invader, then Hellboy: The Board Game came along and I thought well, maybe that's more like it, then Brook City entered the scene and my interest shifted again. I'm waiting for another expensive game to replace that, and keep this up all year, never spending anything.

I was feeling very proud of myself for showing some needed restraint and not buying anything from the BGG.CON Spring Virtual Flea Market this year. But I then went and backed several new games on kickstarter in the last few weeks:

Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden
Dual Powers: Revolution 1917 (Backed with two minutes to spare!)
Fleet: The Dice Game
Crypt
Unbroken
Architects of the West Kingdom

Sigh. shake (Still the anticipation of new games arriving in the future is always nice.)

It feels like there's not a month where I don't buy some new, shiny dice for Kingdom Death: Monster. This month was no different and I picked up the Spring Death Dice (you can see a picture of them in Raz's post above).

I also got Roll for the Galaxy for my birthday, so I guess that counts as acquired too.

In other news, I'm thinking of backing out of the latest The City of Kings KS. Reading Luke's post over on SGOYT makes me a little worried that the game might be solvable. It's also a lot of money (~€100) to buy expansions for a game I (still) haven't played (yet) and which was quite expensive to start with.

I couldn't resist Skull Tales: Full Sail! for now. The game looks really interesting and I really like the pirate theme. Not a criteria to back but nevertheless a plus in my books: the miniatures are looking mighty fine. Maybe with this game I can finally feel like a Mighty Pirate™.

External image

----------

2018-05-28:

It seems like my will to be a mighty pirate wasn't as mighty as I thought. Today cancelled my pledge of Skull Tales and I'm feeling pretty good about it. I'm just not sure that with the three different game phases and three game modes there'll be enough development and polish to make it all come together.

I also reduced my City of Kings pledge to £1 to get access to the pledge manager. After having played the game two times last Friday I'm still not sure that I'll need the expansions and much less the miniatures. I guess we'll see.

Since this list isn't about purchases not being made, I've also actually bought something. Although, to be fair, it's just a preorder for Pulp Detective and the Double Cross expansion. I was quite interested in this when the KS happened but for some reason didn't back it. Looks like I wasn't able to resist after all.

A Steampunk adventure game by the creator of Assault on Doomrock? Yes please! The characters all look very unique and play differently. The concept of customizing and building up your actions is neat.

The price is steeper than expected, unfortunately (Doomrock was $60 during it's campaign vs $85, but I haven't looked into how it compares component-wise), but this will likely be hard to get ahold of outside of Kickstarter like Doomrock was. I might change my mind, but I think it's unlikely.

I hope more characters are planned, but the 4 that are detailed look pretty cool. So far I've watched Rahdo's Rundown and Ready Steady Play's videos and going to go through the rest of them.

Ugh, cutting down on game purchases is hard. I actually held Altiplano and Quadropolis: Public Services in my hands at the game store this weekend, but I managed to put them back on the shelf.

Retail
5/13 - Exit: The Game – The Abandoned Cabin

Also, I bought a copy of the original Finca for my mom for Mother's Day. It was on the scratch and dent shelf for $8, and the only visible damage was slightly ripped shrink wrap. She was excited to get it.

Two extremes so far this month -- big, sprawling, miniature-packed Hellboy: The Board Game and itty-bitty 18 card Sprawlopolis. Oh and a basic wooden insert to organize the gajillion cards I just received in my all-in Street Masters pledge.

And recently added Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden.

Oop I'm fickle and killed my Sprawloplis pledge in favor of the new edition of Bloc by Bloc: The Insurrection Game. Theme is much more in my wheelhouse.

Annnnnnnd added Sprawlopolis back in right before the campaign ended. Have to admit that the monster tile swayed me.

Last weekend I managed to get a used copy of Mage Knight Board Game, Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game, Zombicide KS edition with all kinds of goodies, and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set with all the adventures and character pack sleeved for $130 at a FLGS yard sale.

Figured these 4 games should give me plenty to learn and play till kickstarter games start rolling in towards middle to end of summer. But we all know I will probably be making a post come the June edition

I bought this game a last year and I added the Season 2 kickstarter a few days ago. If you're at all into tabletop baseball, this is a must have. And we still have a few more stretch goals to go. Give it a try! It's a great price too.

Thunderbolt Apache Leader is one of my favorite games, solo or not, of all time. I never got Hornetor Phantom because I'd heard that TAL was the best and I assumed that it was an evolution of the system. Later on, I found out that the other Leader games weren't less evolved, they were a parallel system and had their own enjoyable features. So I put Phantom Leader Deluxe on the wishlist and let it languish.

I then saw Gato Leader had come out. It was supposed to be a great update to U-Boat Leader and from the SGOYT posts I'd seen, it looked crazy thematic. I figured it would also be a nice change to do subs instead of aircraft (yay for shelf diversity!). So I bought it and played it a few times and I felt something was lacking. I didn't feel the progression of the war, I didn't feel my actions were having lasting effects. I didn't even feel any pull or tension to send out my subs. The tactical battles were actually awesome and as good as anything DVG has ever designed, but the larger campaign suffered. While I didn't mind the limited ordnance (torpedoes!) per se, the lack of tension when choosing your ordnance (unlike in TAL where loading up your aircraft is tense and awesome!) was just another piece of said tension removed from the overall game. This was such a shame, because the sub combat was truly incredible but it ultimately felt as useful as sending out messages in bottles and awaiting feedback. This also made me wary of Hornet/Phantom leader as I know that Gato Leader was somewhat related to that system.

I then bought B-17 Flying Fortress Leader. Hell yes, a new Leader game with a new system! It has a gorgeous mounted board with hexes! Tons of targets! WW2! Well..... it wasn't what I expected. I will say that I bought it in the summer last year and this was the point I'd had enough of boardgaming. The constant and increasing pressure to stay on top of new games, along with my vastly diminished gaming time since my baby was born the year before, meant that I was no longer enjoying sitting down to long, meaty games. But B-17 looked awesome and I jumped on it. I only played once and it was the very short 1942 mission. This meant a lot of things weren't used, including Luftwaffe replenishment, technologies, etc. Also, since it's about a bombing squadron, the flight to and from the target is pretty "on rails". There's no maneuvering, attack angles, etc. You're almost like a flock of birds migrating, except you might have an escort to fight off attackers. The escorts have no counters (WW2, no missiles) so it's essentially die-rolling back and forth with the bandits. Then you reach the target, fight off the last wave of flak/bandits, and unload all your ordnance. There is almost no reason to not unload every last bit of your ordnance on the target (so that aspect of the other Leader games is gone). However, I am criticizing the game on what it is NOT, not what it actually is. I want to get rid of it from my collection but I also feel there is a good game in there that I just have to play it to figure out how it is all tied together. I have a feeling the player agency is there, but it's subtle and from a very high-level Grand Strategy-style viewpoint. Also, the game looks friggin great, the components and artwork and counters are sweet. It would be a shame to squander it.

Butttttttttt...... my time is limited, my energy during my free time even more so. I've only dipped my toe back into the boardgaming realm and went back to my wishlist of old. This game was yelling for me - it looked like what I was searching for. I am partial to the theme - Israel's scrappy and achieved military superiority like a country of Macgyvers. The timeline reflecting technological evolution of military hardware is nifty. I really like the losing conditions - that invasion track is what was missing from the other leader games for me. (Even B-17 FFL will never have the UK invaded by the Germans so you're always safe there). One thing I did like about Gato Leader was that it wasn't the sprawling tablehog that TAL and B-17 are, so that's awesome about IAFL. My final thought about it is that its quirks are something I'll need to adjust to - one that comes to mind is the fact that your pilots and a good chunk of your ordnance doesn't cost you any SO points (they're limited, but in other ways). I'm guessing that SO's will have to be saved for events; we'll see how I feel about that. I do like the three other tracks that are present in Hornet/Phantom.

Anyhow, this game I am pretty stoked about. I'd love to actually play the damned thing, along with B-17FFL. Let's see if I can make that happen. It's a good goal for me as a boardgamer
