Crosswords, Sudokus, and board games have a reputation for being good for your brain health.

Do you play board games to keep your mind sharp?

One important aspect of exercise is the repetition. What games have you gotten better at over time? Also, excluding Dominion, which would you recommend to others for their replay value?

What are your favorite dexterity games? What sets that game apart from others? Do you pick dexterity games for their challenge, their narrative, or their Party value? What do you think the most difficult dexterity game is?

In not-boardgaming, let's talk about physical exercise (or skip this item, if you want).

Have you ever been part of a sports team?
What is your favorite exercise?
If you could get into one sport, regardless of cost, which would it be?

Fake Artist - I went bold and it gloriously blew up in my face.

Hanabi
- First time in a long time and we made a bunch of really stupid mistakes but pulled out a 17 which is okay I guess.

Donner Dinner Party - Another social deduction game where I'm going to come off sounding butthurt because I got eliminated first round. We ended the night with this game, rules were simple. If we don't eat enough then we will eat someone and they are "eliminated" from the game. If pioneers last 7 rounds they win, if cannibals (odd because we're all eating people but maybe they're too enthusiastic to eat people) outnumber pioneers they win automatically or if they = pioneers at the end. I am the first leader which means I get to look at what card someone contributes. I see a person contributes 0 food. Not suspicious because the deck is like half 0 cards, I myself am on the pioneer team and my hand consists of no food and poison. We surprisingly don't have enough food to feed people so we must eat someone. They choose me the team leader because why not no one has any information at this point. I am eaten. This is like 3 minutes into the game. So I get to sit around the table and watch the other 8 people keep playing because it's a big group game and no one else is available. As a dead person I'm not completely out of the game the owner of the game reminds me. As a consolation prize for being dead you have a once per game ability of negating one person's vote when deciding who to eat. I have very little information of who is on my team so it basically means I have to pay attention for the next 30-60 minutes to look for an opportunity to use this ability. Dead people aren't allowed to talk so I also can't coordinate with the rest of my team (dead people reveal their roles). People are voting fairly unanimously so my ability also wouldn't make much difference. At the end we outnumber cannibals 4 to 1 by end of night 5. No matter what they do cannibals can't win but we play through all the rounds. I end up winning without doing anything. Very anticlimactic for me.

AGoT - An interesting experience. I played it at a 3 player count. This was a more casual group and the person teaching it I think this is their first board game. Anyways they missed some things during the explanation, but other than that it went fairly smooth. The owner is a friend of a friend and they're cool and I think they have their Master's in economics and so they're really into reading books on game theory etc etc. What I'm getting to with all this is me and the other guy would spend 2 minutes putting down our orders and this guys would take 10~15 minutes just staring at the board very methodically putting his stuff down and double checking them. We started at 7:30pm and ended around 1am. Around midnight the other guy was mentally just out of it. At that point they didn't even care about winning they just wanted to sleep so they starting telling the owner to please hurry it up a bit. I've been in pretty much the same position for half the game just holding my stuff down never really getting a chance to take more areas. The game ends in a very anticlimactic final turn where nobody gains any near territory. Me and the owner tie on points but they win on stronghold tiebreaker. An otherwise good game that I think would be improved with more negotiation and more players and less downtime.

Other

I'm at a real lazy point where I don't want to reread rulebooks so I'm bringing the same games or no games to game night. It's super lame.

I'm also posting right now because I have a lot of tight deadlines this week for work.

Biblios continues to see play.

Game with Family
My sister came over from Seattle. We played a bunch of random stuff.

I think most notably was getting in a game of Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small. I've played this a few times on the app to learn it. I like that it distills some of the highlights of Agricola, like the importance of start player, or that feeling of not having enough time to accomplish what you want to do. It was certainly an enjoyable experience, and it's pretty light so I hope I can continue to get this out.

I also was able to get my ninth game of Terraforming Mars in this past weekend, which was pretty good. I played like crap, since I started with company that starts with zero money and a bunch of titanium. I used all of my titanium on a space station that got me a grand total of. . . 1 titanium production. I spent my first three generations taking two actions and passing, and while I was able to build up into something decent eventually, my sister had a better all around engine a lot earlier.

It was good. I think our game took about 90 minutes, including a rules refresher, which I think is still too long.

Another 2P game I've been getting out frequently is Codenames: Duet. My sister and I won two games this weekend, which is pretty cool, because I think Duet is actually really difficult.

OMM

Going backpacking this weekend. I'm still in terrible shape and need to continue working on a healthier body, but I think working myself into a better hiking shape is good, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just trucking a long at work, as well. It's definitely busy, and it's about that time when we start having team members take PTO. I've backloaded most of my PTO in the back half of the year, with convention season and all.

Speaking of, I still need to finalize GenCon/BGGCon plans.

EDITS:

I also picked up a record player this past week. It's one of those shitty $40 dollar ones that you can pick up that look like suitcases. It's really shitty. I went cheap, because I'm not sure collecting vinyl records is a hobby I really want to sink a ton of money into. But. . . I'm having a decent time with it so far. I like that it's interactive, and you have to listen to it through, since you can't skip around. Supposedly the sound quality is better, but I can't tell because I'm a noob.

I think down the road, I'll look into selling mine for cheap, and then investing into something of a better quality.

8.5   1889: History of Shikoku Railways
 8   Magic Maze x2
N/A   Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game

Had Friday night 18xx with 1889. I lost in the auction because I'm always tempted by the expensive private that doesn't close, even though it's a bad idea to get it and another expensive private. Which I did. And then I was in last the whole time. But the other parts of the game were really interesting to watch. Some crazy stock rounds where newly started corporations switched hands. I still managed to make one of the best corporations, cause that part's easy for me, but my position was horrible anyway (and it took too long for the corporation I did have to get good). Lack of cash at the beginning is pretty bad for trying to buy shares.

After 1889 we played The Mind twice with our 18xx group. The first was a teaching game (4 players, with 2 of us knowing how to play), and we got to round 8! And then the second game we won! That's the best that we've ever done with new players. I have a feeling that since we play 18xx together, we kinda know how the other players think, so we were able to understand how players would play better.

Went to our friend's game day on Saturday. Some more teaching game of the Mind, but with players we don't usually play with, so no more wins. Tried a couple scenarios of the Magic Maze expansion, which was neat. It added a police guard that you can move, and the pawns can't be on the same tile as it.

We also played Battlestar Galactica, and I was a human for the first time!!!! It was so exciting! After the sleeper phase I was still a human! And then the cylon gave away their other card, and I was trying to avoid eye contact because I didn't want her to give it to me, and then she didn't give it to me!! So I was a human!!! (Note: If you can't tell, I've always been a cylon when I've played) We lost, but it was still fun. We were getting a bunch of Crisis cards without jump icons, so the jump track was moving really slowly, and we lost morale. But I died a human.

On My Mind
-I'm going to my first (and probably only ever) bridal shower this weekend! It's for my future sister-in-law. I'm pretty excited. I finished the present and I'm working on wedding presents now.
-I still have a bunch of videos to film and edit for our anniversary. I've been slowly working on it when I have free time, but I need to finish them up soon!
-I went to Barnes & Noble yesterday and finally used a gift card that I've had for ~6 years. I bought Montague Island Mysteries and Other Logic Puzzles, a mystery story book with a bunch of logic puzzles in it. I've had a couple of interactive puzzle books on my wishlist for a bit, so we'll see how this one goes. So far I've done a couple of the puzzles (this morning on my commute) and I like it! Also, there were 24 cents left over on the gift card, and the cashier gave me back change! I think that's the first time that's happened.. usually they leave it on the gift card. So that was a good deal.

Whistle Stop
Splendor
Rhino Hero: Super Battle
Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I bought Whistle Stop a while back because it was on sale at an online store. I remembered enjoying the game at Gencon. I did not remember just how completely awful the color accessibility of the game was. I won, but had to constantly ask "is this green or red or brown" when determining what different tiles cost to use.

On the sale pile it goes.

It was shocking to me that it had been almost a full year since the last time we played Splendor. It's a game that is sort of an evergreen for me, but the parade of new games constantly hitting the table pushed it to the side for a very long time. I went with the "shoot for high value cards" strategy that I normally work toward, and it paid off when I eked out a win. I wish we were playing Splendor more often, because I think we'd really enjoy the twists the expansion modules add on.

Rhino Hero Super Battle is silly and fun. One of my best Gencon purchases.

Two more scenarios left to finish the Dunwich cycle in Arkham Horror LCG. This game was pretty frustrating - I needed to pass will tests, and was not drawing any will cards, so got stuck with some garbage negative effects hanging on my character for a really long time. Still made some good progress and stomped out a bunch of slimy monsters, but I was really wishing my deck was very different. Once I buy and play the last two mythos packs, think I'll take a pretty long break from this game, then start up a new campaign with a different character someday down the line. I do NOT think I'll buy into the next two cycles. I need to get more than one play per mythos pack to justify the amount of cash I've sunk into this game, and it's just not one I get back to super frequently.
