I'm a little bit into the fifth palace, at level 37.

I also threw down the 100 thousand yen for the fortune teller's magic rock, and spent the rest of the money I had saved up on items to take care of status effects I wasn't prepared for initially.

Been playing quite a bit of this, about 21 hours on the clock. Ness is level 57, with Paula at 53, Jeff at 51, and Poo at 49.

Definitely a classic and I can see why it has a cult following. It's the sense of whimsy and creative confidence here that were so influential. Even though we look back at 1995 as being "early" for videogaming and RPGs, you can tell that Earthbound exists precisely because the genre already had grown so much so rapidly. They play with the template in ways that you would expect for a release years later.

I appreciate that there are some built-in ways to circumvent the grind - the two semi-secret enemies that drop tons of experience, Jeff's rockets, etc. I'm currently doing a little bit of the Rock Candy trick to boost Paula and Jeff's HP but from there I think it's full-speed ahead for the endgame.

Don't usually do this, but this weekend was Stunfest a long-running videogaming festival/convention in France that has also been a Premiere destination for competitive Street Fighter for several years (the 2015 Grand Finals for USF4 is among the most famous of all SF matches, for example).

This was probably the best Top 8 in Street Fighter for 2018 thus far. If you're curious and want watch an absolutely wild match, Winner's Finals was probably the highlight:

Even more fun with some context:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Last year, Oil King's character Rashid was considered either the 1st or 2nd strongest character in the game, and Oil King has played Rashid exclusively since the launch of SFV. The character was substantially nerfed a few weeks ago, so no-one expects him in Winner's Finals.

Additionally, there was a Top 8 last year where Infiltration had to beat the three best Rashid players in the world, one after the other, with his counter-pick Juri. Oil King was one of the three. Juri is usually considered low-mid tier at best, and no-one else gets any sort of competitive results with the character.

At the time, Infiltration was the underdog. This time, it's reversed.

What else? I beat the quest The Second Dream!

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Mainly by cheesing the last three quests with Limbo, and a Lanka with a catalyst that could do almost 4000 corrosive damage per shot. It didn't really matter once the Battalyst grew 'resistant' to its damage.

Now, I just have to beat the boss of Neptune, and I'm on to Pluto!

Finally returned and beat Headlander, which I'd basically set aside for as long as I had Origin Access. Funny game, a nice combination of excellent humor in multiple forms, and a solid metroidvania. Made me smile a lot, between the retro styling, the ridiculous world, and the pun-making automated doors.

After beating the game I had 98% completion, and ran around for a bit trying to find the missing room or two, then I got annoyed with that and remembered that nobody pays me for 100% completions, so there's still one health upgrade I never found, but that's fine I didn't need it.

Still on Staunton (f**k its weird layout), still getting blown up on a regular basis. 38 / 73 missions complete, 34 / 100 hidden packages.

A few random tidbits:
1) According to the manual seven songs should play on Lips 106, but I've only ever heard six. The seventh doesn't play. Developer oversight, perhaps?
2) F**k the Mafia guy with the shotgun.
3) F**k how cars end up upside-down way too easily.
4) I swear I saw about seven vehicles blow up, I had nothing to do with it. I pulled out of my safehouse, some distance away car 1 pushes over car 2, car 2 goes on fire and explodes, car 3 comes along, car 1 explodes, car 4 comes along, car 3 explodes...

I was well into a game of Master of Orion, and it was one of the best games I'd played. I started close to the Mrrshans, who allied with the Bulrathis and started making life miserable for me right away. We were engaged in bitter war with the starting ships--fighters and such. I held my own, but it made expanding difficult.

But I was playing as the Darloks, so I stole everybody else's technology and got ahead in that department. The Sakkras took most of the map, but I carved out a strong position. The Sakkras then won an election, so I had to rebel and fight everybody. But I was doing well despite the extra challenge.

And then the game crashed. And I hadn't saved.

I couldn't bear to play it all over again, so I looked around for something I might enjoy. Nothing looked appealing, so I resorted to reinstalling Civ IV.

I hate that game every time war breaks out, and I'm bored with it half the time during peace. Still, as long as I stick to something like Warlord level, it's a pleasant game to while away the evening with. And that's how it turned out last night. I played a duel game, avoided war the whole time, and eventually won a space-race victory.

I have no idea what I'm doing. I can sort of fly the ship around but it's pretty much been autopilot all the time. Would have been nice if they had started me with some way to generate income. I just don't even know what I'm supposed to do to get started. Tried a little trading. Made 800 credits. Bleh.

With my new airship, the Invincible, I was able to travel to Falgabard and get some items. Then I went to the Cave of Shadows. I think I'm almost through it. There are a lot of hidden passages in here, so it can get confusing. Dark Knight is recommended for this area, but I've just been sticking with Thief/Knight/White Mage/Black Mage.

I've been moving kind of quickly through this game, trying to finish it before the end of the week when Detroit: Become Human comes out.

I feel like I may actually be getting closer to the end, but I could be way off. According to some collectibles and some of the skill unlocks, it does seem like I'm nearing the end.

The game is awesome, no doubt, and if I didn't have 4 or 5 other games I really wanted to play at the moment, I would probably spend more time going through the optional areas.

What's funny is this game feels more like a Tomb Raider game than the actual Tomb Raider games. I'm constantly going into tombs and crypts and taking artifacts. At one point the kid says "Are you really going to take that?" when Kratos is looting a crypt and Kratos responds "He no longer has need of it."

It's not the worst game I've ever played. It's pretty compelling to go and stop crimes. Dispatch and patrol duties seem to be the main point of the game. If you don't catch the criminal red-handed you have to do an investigation, which really is just assigning a CSI and then a detective to the case.

Finished the first palace. Cleaned up my room. I need to buy some plant food. The game is definitely starting to grow on me. Some of the fights are getting more interesting.

Managing SP and items is important.

Gave this another try. Wish I hadn't. Started to have fun running around, but I got to a boss battle that is totally bugged.

Rockets will shoot through some walls, while explode into others. Rockets don't hurt the boss. And the hit window totally bugged out. Sometimes it registers hits sometimes no.

One of those battles where you need to endlessly dodge for 30 seconds, until you are allowed to attack the boss, and then crappy hit detection.

The game is broken. Probably why it was so cheap.

I picked this up for the Game Club event. Haven't gotten very far. It's a little finicky on my PC with one crash and one hard lock so far.

Also nearing the end of Mass Effect 2 -- hoping to finish it up tonight. Still no space sex, but I'll keep putting myself out there.

Played some Fortnite with people at work. We had some runs where we died within the first 30 seconds to some guy who found a shotgun before we found anything. Had another run where we made it to the final two squads because we got lucky with holing up in a building that wound up being the center of the storm as it closed around us. Despite having traps, we got out gunned. Can't say I enjoy the game, but I can't say no when my manager asks if I want to hop on after lunch.

Had some friends over and we played some Gang Beasts. Some stuff definitely had us doubled over in laughter, but we still have no idea how to actually accomplish anything in the game. Grabbing on to someone and trying to throw them doesn't work when they're also holding on to you. After that, tried out Mount Your Friends and had a few laughs as well.

Fridays often seem to end with playing Smash 4 after work. I've found I enjoy playing as Ganondorf quit a bit; pretty well every move he has hits like a truck, and he's got some tools in his belt that work really well for me (the side b in particular helps to combat opponents who shield instinctively, because it counts as a grab which supersedes blocking).

Previous entry about this here....
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/241111/item/6148437#i...

Did another mission. So far, amongst the 3 levels played so far (mission 1, 2, and bonus #1), feels "samey". Then again, only opponents thus far are 2 types of aliens: some humanoid alien with a rifle; and large spider creature that only does melee by clawing at you. I'd say I can't wait until it gets harder, but I may end up regretting those words. FWIW, I could try replaying these on a harder difficulty level, or with different characters.

On the plus side, my characters are on average 50% to their next level. Hopefully, that's a higher max AP so I can actually use more of my abilities... either b/c I don't have the AP to use them given my current max; or that's all I can do on my turn, and the ability only lasts the current turn (e.g. one Ability increases attack values for that turn only, but then I have no AP left to attack). A workaround is the Command unit can grant AP to units, but it's only 10 to 25 AP at a time. She could use it twice, but still kind of hit or miss considering attacking takes 20 to 30 AP per use.

EDIT: added some clarifications

Beat another mission, currently on Mission #4. I was appalled that I pressed the power button in the midst of a mission, only to come back and find the game closed on its own! Opened up the game again thinking I'll have to restart it... nope! It asked if I wanted to resume that mission! Gave you the mission overview, and you continue where you left off! cool

Still ignoring the shop. It's becoming akin to many other RPGs (esp. the Final Fantasy ones like IV, VI, and IV: TAY)… there are some useful equipment to buy (not items, while this game doesn't have items for sale... you find them on the floor of Missions and they're immediately activated when collected) or otherwise sell for credits, but b/c I don't have that level of money, buying one or few things blows my entire budget, and it's not like I'm not getting by with what I already start with. Much like how I'm spamming the same moves, and not really using much of Abilities (just regular move and regular attack), I suppose this could become more indispensable later in the game when things get harder? Otherwise, I feel they could've just easily left this feature out. Leveling up seems sufficient enough. That takes us to...

Another pushover level. Group XP is average of 78 to 82%. Almost time to level up! Given how easy things are and how slow the characters seem to be leveling up, I wonder if playing at a harder difficulty level would earn XP quicker? I'm currently at normal (see below for scale)
Extreme
Hard
Normal <<<<
Easy
Casual

"Ooley" ****! Every time I turn the power off while in the midst of a mission, turn it back on, and swipe to unlock, the game auto closes! And this time, it didn't let me auto-resume! I'll need to contact the dev about this

Did beat mission #4. On Hard mode (just to shake things up). This one had more enemies than otherwise, so not sure if it was THAT, or that hard mode really was harder in other ways. My Vangard (heavy assault unit with missile launchers) and Infiltrator (lady who prefers to strike from afar, armed with a phaser-like rifle), croaked. 4 out of 6 of them gained XP, but oddly enough, they did gain XP even though they died Not sure if this was random (ie. 2 units die, 2 units are randomly no getting XP), or if it's b/c they didn't do enough damage to meet some threshold?

Those who did level up got a nice "sweep of stats", with the most notable one, more AP (Action Points). Perhaps I can now experiment with more of the Abilities/spells! Speaking of experimenting...

I've observed that sometimes, the game gets into a certain state where pressing the power button on my Ipad is causing the forced closing of the app! I'll take a screenshot, but then the app closes! angry

I've been out of town for a few days, so it's handheld gaming for me right now. Apart from some Picross, I've been giving the recent Mario game a try. I'm currently about four or five worlds in. I have a very favourable impression so far, but we'll see if it holds my attention when I get home and have access to my PC again.

I finished the Ardennes Assualt US forces campaign over the weekend. I had restarted as I lost one of my critical Companies on a mission and I wasn't about to attempt the campaign with only 2 companies left. All the resources I had put into them were lost. Some really nice mission development there. Stealth missions, hold the line, rush and capture. They throw in these little side bonus objectives to tempt you into spending a few extra resources on getting them. I enjoyed it.

I've been playing a lot of Divinity: Dragon Commander while travelling. It's not good, but I'm enjoying it quite a lot. There's a lot that's original and interesting in the game, but it doesn't always come together too well. The RTS combat, particularly, is bad. They've worked hard to balance things and to make the game operate at a pace such that starting with unequal forces isn't simply a loss every time, while still allowing the RTS battles to go quick enough that they're not huge holdups in the epic campaign (plus, you can only manually resolve one RTS battle per epic campaign turn). But they're still bad experiences. Units are hard to tell apart and I can't micromanage them well. There don't seem to be a lot of tools to manage something overly fiddly. Mostly I turn into a dragon and lay to waste my opponent's troops, and I have yet to experience any problem doing that - rarely do my actual units do anything, because I rely on my dragon heavily every time. So I basically avoid the RTS game by relying entirely on my dragon and winning that way. I started on casual difficulty, bumping it up to easy because casual was too easy (no risk of losing), as I don't think making the RTS elements of the game challenging would actually make the game better - just more frustrating.

I'm also playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I just finished the 13th mission and am back in Prague with a couple side-missions to finish up. Invisibility still seems overpowered in this game. It's my main way to move around, and I still have almost 50 biocell rechargers, or whatever they're called. One problem I'm having with the game is that generally completing objectives if you just focus on the objective is super easy and doesn't take very long and thus not very rewarding, and while I liked exploring like crazy initially, now I don't really see the point. I could try to get the collectibles, but I've already missed some of each kind, so that's kind of pointless. So most of the time, it seems like I'm just dashing/ sneaking to the next key mission point, bypassing as much as possible. Which doesn't seem the optimal way to play the game.

OK--after the experience I described above, under Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, I went back to MOO and started a new game as the Darloks. I again ran into plenty of difficulty, though of a different kind. And it's turning out to be one of the better MOO games I've played.

The Sakkras grabbed the lion's share of planets in this game too. The Psilons also got a lot, while the Humans and Bulrathis remained squeezed. I got my share, but the Sakkras declared war on me pretty early, and the Psilons joined in periodically. So, there was a lot of back and forth. It got to where I couldn't colonize a planet without somebody else taking it over.

Meanwhile, stealing technology was great; it's why I like playing as the Darloks. I'd never have been able to keep up on my own, but with my spies bringing in info, I was able to stay ahead. Still, at least two of the other powers were bigger and stronger, so I had to bide my time.

That wasn't easy--especially when the Sakkra leader was voted supreme ruler and I had to rebel to stay in the game. From then on, I'd be at war with everybody. And so it is.

With great effort, I thought I had secured my territory. I had planetary shields and missile bases and was shooing away enemy fleets like they were flies. But then came biological warfare.

I never use it myself; it seems dirty and spoils your reputation. But this time, my enemies developed biological weapons, and I had no defense against them (the enemy didn't either; I couldn't even steal it). Soon swarms of small-hulled ships were invading my domain and eradicating my colonies. All I could do was build lots and lots of missile bases--two or three times as many as I usually build. Eventually that began to pay off. But I had lost my home world and two adjacent colonies.

In time, the enemy did develop an antidote to the poison, and I promptly stole it. But by then, they were building stronger warships, and mine had trouble standing up to them. They were even able to take out a few of my missile bases.

At this stage, I'd like to have had the neutronium bomb--a weapon powerful enough to break through planetary defenses and knock out colonies. But no one had it. Even now (when I left off this morning) no one has it. Instead, I had to turn to sabotage.

That's another joy of playing as the Darloks. Periodically I'd find the enemies had no tech for me to steal, so I'd turn my spies to stirring up rebellion on enemy colonies. When a colony rebels, the controlling power has to send ground troops in to retake it. Furthermore, rebellion can creep onto nearby planets and begin to spread. Meanwhile, colonies in rebellion aren't producing anything for the owner.

I believe I finally reached a turning point when I completed research on my favorite weapon, the black-hole generator. It's a powerful but space-consuming device; it has up to a 25 percent chance of destroying any ship it attacks (adjusted for shielding). I'm not entirely clear on the details, but in my experience the BHG does more damage than I'd have expected--sometimes reducing a stack of five hundred enemy ships to a hundred and fifty in one shot, then finishing off the stack in a couple more shots. Planets tend to be well shielded, so missile bases are harder to take out, but even those can fall to the BHG.

Anyhow, I designed a huge-hulled BHG-equipped ship and started producing it. At first I used them only for defense--a couple ships stationed at each of my border planets. They proved devastating, ripping apart any approaching enemy fleet in concert with my missile bases.

My ships are not invulnerable, though. Before too long, I started losing a few in battle, so I'm having to upgrade the design whenever the opportunity arises.

Desperate to take the war to the enemy's turf, I designed a ship which carried omega-V bombs in addition to the BGH and beam weapons. Unfortunately, enemy planets have shields tough enough to withstand those mid-tier bombs. I destroyed a few weak enemy colonies but couldn't make a dent in the stronger ones. I'm still waiting for the neutronium bomb, the most powerful in the game (and I'm not entirely sure its arrival is guaranteed; the tech tree has some randomness to it).

At any rate, I've recaptured Nazin, my home world, as well as nearby Vega and Rayden. All my colonies are protected by class XX shields (best in the game) and lots of missile bases that are soon to be equipped with zeon missiles (the best of those in the game). All my enemies are constantly putting down rebellions, and I'm just waiting for a breakthrough that will allow me to take the offensive.

I think maybe I'll design a ship with strong beam weapons and attack the guardian of Orion. There I can get access to the death ray and a few other goodies, plus a choice planet for colonization and research.

However things go from here (and I'm pretty certain they'll soon go entirely my way), this game reminds me that MOO is wonderful. So many times I've been set back and started losing hope, only to have a tech breakthrough that brings me back into the lead.

Played through the tutorial and the three requisite PvE missions before being allowed to actually play team vs team in this "3rd person" shooter where you control a giant spaceship made for war.

It's decent enough so far, but seems like it will be extremely limited by the free-to-play model. Next time I play I'll do a little more digging and see if anything other than the four base ship loadouts are available without paying.

I do like that the ships function noticeably different. The "artillery" ship is most effective when facing directly towards an enemy, where it can blast it with the long-distance heavy beam cannon. Another ship can launch a broadside attack, which requires you to put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation of moving sideways. You can also divert extra power to weapons, shields, or navigation for short periods.

I picked this up for $4.50 on Fanatical. It's pretty good and well worth the money. Has elements of Tomb Raider (2013) and Batman: Arkham City with muscle cars.

I also finally finished the main quest of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt so I'm getting ready to jump into Hearts of Stone.

Tried playing this. PS2 version.

Everytime there is a cutscene the controller ceases to respond. I have no idea why. I can get the game to respond after pausing it. Sometimes I have to do this several times.

So obnoxious.

I'm going to buy the Steam version when it goes on sale.

I never played this before and only read about its almost legendary reputation as one of the best adventures of all time.

Yesterday, I gave it a first try. I was able to solve the first puzzles myself. I got this guy with the Swiss name to drive my car and collected the first dead.

Then, trouble started. I walked around for an hour, I figured out that I could fill the worm balloons with the liquid used for the dead. But I failed to work out what to do next and had to resort to a walkthrough. I'm glad I did. I never would have found out that I had to punch the ace card and the necessary steps with this pneumatic delivery guy.

The cutscenes so far were great, the story is original and mature. I can see where the enthusiasm for this game stems from. But I'm severely questioning myself if I am too dumb for this game.

Were you guys able to solve this on your own? Will it continue like this? Is it worth playing it even if I have to use walkthroughs most of the time?
