Zen Garden has Marigold that gives you coins. It used to be (still is?) that a plant can go from small to medium, and then from that to large/full-sized. For the small to medium, they drop coins there too

You go to the "field screen" to collect your dues after a set time has passed. IIRC, it uses a meter that fills up, or a numeric counter to let you know when coins get generated.

While in the academy, you receive a periodic allowance. Afterwards, you can invest C-bills in three different stocks (you're a Steiner after all) - one of them performs well but is expensive, one of them is slow but steady and sure, and the other is very risky and prone to lose money. You'll periodically get stock dividend payments in your account.

Video Game: Earth Orbit Stations
In this game you're running a private space venture in the then-near-future of those space-age late 1990's. Every turn is a quarter of a fiscal year. You make decisions about advertising, R&D, investments, space construction, and contract jobs, and when you're finished the computer calculates the turn. The next turn begins with your financial statement showing if you've made or lost money, and you gather your income as applicable.
