About halfway through Chapter 4, 44% story completion and 57% overall completion. 58/90 optional challenges complete, as well as most sidequests that have been available up to this point. I have fully completed the challenge lists for Weapons Expert, Master Hunter, and Explorer, so that comes with some nice perks. Was fun hunting the Legendary Panther.

I feel like the scale of this experience has somehow been under-reported. A 70 hour playthrough would be lean.

I was kind of hoping that the 'Romeo and Juliet' questline in Chapter 3 would go somewhere, but in a way it helps demonstrate the chaotic, wheels-coming-off quality of the main story. Also enjoying Arthur's backstory with Mary Linton.

I don't spend a lot of time at camp, but when I'm there I try to listen in on all of the interactions between Dutch's crew. They put a LOT of background conversation into the game, which helps flesh everyone out. The storytelling here routinely hits benchmarks that other games barely even reach for, to be honest.

Rockstar also realized that players would roam pretty widely outside of the story, so there are little changes to dialogue during missions where you "first" encounter a place/character/etc. I cleared out Shady Belle (and even completed the dead or alive bounty against the Leymone Raiders) over 50 hours before the story took me there, and there was extra dialogue from Arthur.

I have had some bugs here and there, but nothing too severe. Twice I've had missions flat out break, requiring me to load a prior save. Neither were main storyline though. I've also encountered a bug three or so times where the crafting menu overwrites "provisions" over every other category, and you have to load a save to fix that as well.

506 cars owned.

The leaderboards for different events are interesting. A race that cannot be done in under 3 minutes (because of maximum car speed and distance) has a top time of 28 seconds. Fastest possible car in the game can just squeak out 300 mph but leaderboards are dominated by cars going up to 500mph. Jumps that max out at around 1600 or 1700 feet in distance have high scores of a couple miles.

Side effect of of PC and XB cross play. Microsoft's "play anywhere" strategy also means "cheat every where." Doesn't effect my gameplay. It's just curious. I don't understand the compulsion.

Still chugging along playing as the Chinese. Advanced far enough to be able to change my government to monarchy from oligarchy. As your government changes, you retain some benefits from previous government structures called Legacy Bonuses. So far I've been able to carry over the 27% xp for combat units from oligarchy. Right now I also have 9% bonus influence points from monarchy which will increase to +1% every 10 turns I remain as a monarchy.

While my government is a monarchy, I get +50% production towards defensive building and +1 housing for each level of wall. At the moment, I have 3 military (Chivalry, Bastions, and Conscription), 1 economic (Free Market), 1 diplomatic (Charismatic Leader), and 1 great person (Strategos) policies in place.

As of this moment, the Americans have declared war on me. That is fine by me because I needed an excuse to expand eastward and 2 American cities stand in my way. Detroit looks easy pickings with just 1 population. Cleveland has 4 so not so sure about that. Fortunately, I have couple of options. The 2 American cities are between me and 2 city states. I can place more influence points towards one of the 2 city states to become its primary benefactor and persuade that city state to go to war with the Americans. I've also developed the ability to produce spies and can sabotage the 2 American cities in some way.

The British tried to have a foothold on my continent by bringing a settler close to where the French had built its city before I destroyed it. I declared war on England and successfully captured the settler. They then sent in a couple of musketeers but when I successfully dealt with them, England sued for peace and as settlement, I was flushed with money and resource.

When I switched to monarchy, I was informed that I could now stack 2 same units which is great news to me. I was also told that with the acquisiton of a tech (can't remember the tech's name), I would be able to stack 3 same units! As Jythier pointed out, the strength of the unit increases by 10 but the stack army's hitpoint stays at the single unit's hitpoint. I have yet to see if a general counts as a unit in this case.

With my captured British settler, I sent it overseas to a new continent and made my first colony, bringin my total to 6 cities. I was surprised that scouts and settlers don't need transport ships to cross bodies of water. I wonder if this is the case for any unit. My colony is very vulnerable right now. It has no protection and there are already 2 cities near it. Once my special unit, Crouching Tiger, is built, I will send it to my first colony.

Recently, I gained the ability to produce a spy and sent one to Paris to try it out. I think the use of a spy will be a lot of fun in this iteration. So far, I had the spy develop a network giving it a greater chance to do espionage. I was successful in stealing a French technology.

I'm excited to see some form of the stack of doom return in this iteration even if it is a less powerful version of CIV III and IV. I have not had much time with the spy mechanic in this game but I'm having fun with it while learning. It will be interesting to see how things progress as I transition to Fascism.

I'm just a few missions into Chapter 4 and still loving the game. The story has really picked up, and I've spent more time working my way through it lately than doing all of the side stuff. A few of the latest missions have been some of my favorites both from a gameplay and story perspective. Arthur's beard is next level at this point too

That said, I'm still finding time to hunt, fish, and play poker or blackjack with folks at camp or around town. I also finally robbed a train outside of a mission, which was a lot of fun. I think in total I'm about 25 hours into the game now. I find myself really wanting to finish it. Not for lack of enjoyment, I just want to see how the story ends. I never played Red Dead Redemption, so I don't know the fate of all the characters, and I'm really growing attached to some of them.

Good times.

I pretty much leveled up all the skills I want, but the XP from items tell an intruiging story, so I'm searching for a lot of stuff still and doing side missions.

Purchased a submachine gun, but most everything has been stealth. There's not much combat in this during the first 15 hours or so.

I'm taking my time with everything. Fun just roaming the jungles and villages finding history.

Platform: Famicon (NES)

This will be a bit long.

I find this game fascinating, because I can't figure out why I'm playing it. No, seriously, I find this intriguing. This is just one regular, difficult, random-spawn, infuriating platformer from 1986, yet something in my mind says that I really really really want to beat the game.

Which is weird, because I have played many a platformer in my days, and I'm usually not this gripped. If a game is as annoying as this, I usually call it quits and just drop it. It's so full of randomness that it's infuriating. Look at this:

(It's a side-scrolling platformer. You can go right or left, jump and shoot sideways. Jump over holes in floors, and shoot enemies that fly around semi-erratically. Here and there are escalators that brings you up to next floor. Stages have increasing number of floors, stage 1 has 5, stage 2 has 7, stage 3 has 9, stage 4 has 11, and so on. That's it.)

1) Jumps are not much controllable, and from stage 2 and on, if you go right (not left), random cats will drop down from the roof. If they drop the moment you jump, you're dead – you'll land on them and can't avoid.
2) Enemies spawn randomly. Some holes in the floor have a "bar" above the hole, that you grip and then slide over the hole. However, you can't shoot while sliding. So if the slide is semi-long, you have to trust your luck that nothing spawns just then. If it does (almost always), you're dead.
3) Sometimes (especially when you just spawn), several enemies will spawn in the exact same spot, making 3 enemies look like one, and causes an unexpected "one enemy with 3 hit points", which in 9 times out of 10 will catch you off-guard and kill you.
4) Sometimes the way to reach next floor isn't an escalator, but a trampoline. You need to press jump when on this, but this sometimes doesn't work, and you do a regular jump, which normally will cause you to die, as you didn't calculate for it.
5) Sometimes you need to jump down to the floor below. Whether this actually brings you to the floor below, or the game just considers you dead, is pretty random. If the game actually brings you down to the floor below, the chances that it didn't spawn a number of enemies below you is next to none. An attempt to drop down to the floor below, will thus kill you 9 times out of 10 – by pure randomness.
6) Some enemies are immortal, but will move when you hit them. Some will rush towards you but stop if you hit them. Some enemies shoot. A wrong combination of such a spawn puts you in an physically impossible situation.
7) As if it weren't enough, the game is on a timer. Spend too much time, and lava comes up from the floor.

And on top of this, the game frequently spawns so many enemies that it can't handle them, which causes collision detection to drop, and sometimes enemies survive a shot.

Shortly, this game kills you not because you're clumsy, but because of randomness. A cat dropping down just as you jump. The game not recognizing a trampoline jump. Spawning an enemy in your head when you travel with elevator. Not recognizing a drop down to floor below. Spawning impossible combinations of enemies. Etc etc etc etc

And still, I keep coming back and trying again, because I really really want to beat it. And it's intriguing. Why do I want to play this shit? Sure, there are hidden bonuses in the stages, that give extra points, extra shields, and even some that let me become super-invulnerable, and to accidentally find these are pretty fun (though you can never snoop around, because the game is too hectic). And here and there you need to press switches to start moving floors, and sure, I do get farther and farther, though I seem to be stuck on stage 4/5 for like ages now.

And yeah, it _is_ fun that it's an Urusei Yatsura game – I started my anime fandom right after the Urusei Yatsura boom, and I'm pretty fond of the author, so for me it's "the legendary Urusei Yatsura".

But I think it all boils down to a simple thing: The game changes sprites for the protagonist for each stage. Lum starts as a kindergarten kid, and gradually grows. Also, the "shield" you get isn't just a force-field, it's a nicer dress. By some reason, seeing the sprite for the next level give a higher sensation of progress than just seeing "Stage 3". And jumping around with a nice dress is more fun than jumping around in a typical Lum tiger bikini with a force field around. I like that they've spent time doing these excess graphical details. Apart from that, the game is just annoying like hell.

So what this game has taught me is that sometimes, it's all in the details. Just changing the main sprite, and giving it alternative clothes, causes me to try and try and try again, even though the rest of the game is shit.

Whether I'll beat it or not remains to be seen. I'm on Stage 5, but I can't seem to get further. I only reach Stage 5 about 1/3rd of the tries, and something is wrong, I get stuck.

Final Fantasy II -- Playing via Final Fantasy Origins on PSP. About 3 hours in, we just failed to stop the Dreadnought from launching and are on our way back to the rebel HQ. I am enjoying this game, but there are a couple of annoying parts, some internal, some external.

Internally, parts of the "leveling" system are still pretty obtuse and hard to grasp. I shoot lots of people with Maria's Longbow, but her level has not increased past 3. The HP and Endurance make sense (get hit enough, get tougher and get more HP), and Magic seems to make sense, but weapon levels I am still confused about. I guess I need to fight stronger enemies?

Additionally, it is tough to grind Gil to buy better equipment because at least in the areas I am currently in, the enemies do not drop much stuff. But that's a niggle.

Externally, my memory stick adapter continues to give me trouble. I have not had to bail on the game but it will often get hung up as it transitions from overhead map to battle or back. All I can do is wait it out and eventually it will load the next segment. I do not know if the problem is in the adapter or in the PSP itself -- I am considering buying a regular Sony Dual Pro Memory Stick and see if that helps solve the problem, but if it doesn't, then I am out the cash.

All that said I am enjoying the game quite a bit. It is very intriguing to me to see the maturation of storytelling from the first game, which was very bare bones generic, to here which seems to have more thought put into it. The PSOne upgrade is very pretty, looking like a proper SNES style RPG. The menus and commands are easy to use and intuitive. Eager to see what happens next for Firion, Maria, and Gus.

Played some Game Gear, emulated on Game Boy Advance as my GG is not in working order currently.

1Woody Pop -- I am a sucker for brick-breakers ("block kuzushi"), and this one has become a favorite. You play as Woody, a Lincoln Log type of toy, and break bricks throughout a magical toy factory. There are power ups such as fireballs and diamond balls, and stages have appropriate obstacles like toy soldiers or trains. Solidly challenging and very colorful.

2Batter Up -- AKA Gear Stadium in Japan, this is an entry in Namco's long running World Stadium baseball series, and thus is pretty recognizable on first glimpse. For years, I thought the teams in this game were fictional, as they are only represented by a letter (one team by 2 letters), but one day it clicked -- this game features the Japanese major league baseball teams from Nippon Professional Baseball! For the record the teams are as follows:

G - Yomiuri Giants
D - Chunichi Dragons
C - Hiroshima Toyo Carp
W - Taiyo Whales
S - Yakult Swallows
T - Hanshin Tigers

L - Saitama Seibu Lions
Bu - Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes
B - Orix Braves
F - Nippon-Ham Fighters
H - Fukuoka/Daiei Hawks
O - Lotte Orions

These are the Central League and Pacific League teams as they were in 1990 when this game was developed, and several of these teams have moved, merged, or folded in the interim. Additionally, there are two All Star Teams, M and N, which stand for Majors and Namco, respectively.

Anyway, I played as the Giants and beat the Lions, then lost the next game to the Buffaloes, then replayed that game and won. Next game should be against the Braves. Not a deep game, but a fun and easy little baseball game. Adding the knowledge of the Japanese teams has REALLY helped this in my mind.

Batter Up is not currently in the games database, so I am going to try to get it added. I still have the cart and manual, too.

Really getting into this turn-based game. Have taken half the squads through to the end on normal difficulty, but am still fine-tuning my strategy and am trying to find the best squad to attempt hard difficulty.

The strangest thing I find is that for a game so simple -- only a max of four islands before the final two screens -- it can take so long to plan out moves. I sit down and before I know it an hour has passed just going through one island.

Continued Cat on a Diet - and now I have completed this feline puzzle game! Cool little puzzle, enjoyable but not super great.

I might go back and take the bonus levels, and maybe one day try to get all the levels with full three stars.

I'm in a pickle.

My two issues are:
1) Between all the Switch games I've been trying to beat, on and off, combined with efforts to complete the various challenges on this site, I have no idea what I'm actually, properly playing anymore. Certainly not when I'm flitting between a large number of games;
2) I just don't feel like I've made any progress in any game lately. All of the games I'm playing - covered by statement 1 - I've either lost momentum on from not having played them in a week or longer, lost momentum on from having got stuck, or lost momentum on from having been killed / defeated / disqualified.

Perhaps I should play something relatively quick and easy to win, some sort of palate cleanser, I dunno.

Mentioning Goldeneye here simply because I played some multiplayer an hour ago.

Before Christmas I bought a second controller to play games with my partner. Yesterday, we started LEGO The Lord of the Rings and played it for about 90 minutes. After a rough start with both of us confused due not being used to playing on a split screen on our 40'' TV from the couch and the inexperience of my partner in playing videogames, we got into it. I hope that she continues enjoying joint playing and we can finish this together.

I continue playing Batman: Arkham City. I'm in 8 hours now and have completed 10% of the game. It's fun but I'm reminded why I prefer linear games to open world games. I tend to get lost in open worlds and use too much time doing pointless things. Enjoyable pointless things, don't get me wrong. But I have to get some more focus. 40 hours seems to be more than enough time for this game.

Pinball FX3 has become a staple whenever I want to waste some time with videogames and I'm not up for something complex or new.

Hoping to start this up this week. Downloading the 12+ files of the base game and the merge of Hitman 1 has been taking forever.

Watched the Agent 47 movie. It was alright. A decent action movie. I hope someday they make one as an assassination thriller, more like The Jackal. It got me inspired to play Hitman, so it served it's purpose.

Stoked to have all the different levels to play with now. Hitman 1 was great fun, but seemed a bit limited by the number of levels.

<sigh> I love this game, but I'm beginning to wonder about my aptitude for strategy games.

I started out playing the campaign on Normal difficulty. It begins with a tutorial, then goes into a reasonably easy mission. After that comes a mission which defeated me three or four times before I caught on and managed to win. I was hoping that would turn out to be just a bump in the road, but now I'm into the next mission, and I've lost that several times. If I continue the campaign, I think I'll switch to Easy.

Meanwhile, I've played a lot of custom scenarios (plus a few predesigned scenarios). I started out on Knight level (the second-easiest) and got to where that was usually too easy, so I raised the bar to Lord level. I win often enough on that level, but when I don't I'm utterly crushed. It's not like I came close but didn't quite make it; I just find myself outclassed and outnumbered before I think the game is really under way.

It's a lot of fun exploring, fulfilling quests, fighting monsters, finding treasure, leveling up heroes, and settling territory. It's also fun to build a powerful army of tier-IV units and conquer the map, when I can manage to do that. It's not so fun when the enemy shows up at my doorstep with tier-III units and I'm still trying to clear my base territory with tier-I units.

I'll keep at it. It's too good a game to walk away from. I just get a little dejected when the AI mops the floor with me.

Tried out the demo for Between The Stars - unlike what I expected I ended up playing minutes of it! It wasn't actually half bad... I will consider getting it once it is released - sometime in Q1 2019...

You play as a captain on a stellar cruiser. There is a good amount of things that you can do, and the game offers both action and role playing. Not bad, not bad.

More Xenonauts. On ironman attempt six now; ironman attempt 5 ended in ignominy when I squad-wiped after getting greedy on a base mission and lost all of my laser weapons, and didn't have an alien alloy cushion (I had been airstriking more than securing crashes in a misguided attempt to minimize risk); this lead to a spiral of trying to do missions under-armed, spending all of the little alloy I did have on my troops and not upgrading my airforce; this lead to lots of really bad terror missions, which lead to another squad wipe, which lead to me losing all weapons again with no alloy and even more behind in the air war... yeah.

Lessons learned -- do UFO crash missions even when you already have the tech from that UFO type. Bases are hard, and blowing up the power core and fleeing is totally OK; the money and alloy in them really isn't worth the risk.

Last game for tonight: Bunny Bounce. Really seems to be the highest action of the three Bounce games! But now that I have tried them all three, I must say the first had some really good charm with having a better way to fail or win the game. But I have quite enjoyed all three of them.

Hopefully I can also manage to get a better ending of this game sometime later

Ack, how do we fly this thing? Landed at FM, put on a concert, headed to Balamb, and ran around looking for the captain, ya know?

Movement in this game annoys me so much. Took way to long to get off the screen after visiting the FM mayor and I get lost too much in this game. Finding the captain took way too long.

2nd day of Winter, 5506. It's also the 21st day of the ongoing Volcanic Winter. It's also the 2nd day of the ongoing Toxic Fallout.

Meat is running low, and the dogs are starving. For now, we've started feeding them simple meals, even though it's a bit wasteful. We tried hunting a megasloth, but by the time the carcass was carried back to base it was already rotting from the fallout.

From our neolithic start, we now have all the technology we need to build a ship and escape this blasted rimworld. Soon, the ship will be complete. In retrospect though, we should probably not have 17 colonists. That's a lot of cryosleep caskets to build.
