A real stinker from Humble Monthly for March. It has a nice retro look (and the visual effect options to go with it such as simulating a CRT screen), but no matter what difficulty you play on, the moment the race starts the AI cars fly off into the distance. Even in the tutorial, after you pass the basic "drive" and "drift" sections, you can't learn how to use the slipstream technique of driving behind another car to avoid wind resistance because as soon as that section starts the other car disappears over the horizon.

Time trials are kind of fun since the music is catchy and the visuals are good (if very repetitive), but placing 50-60 globally out of 70 or 80 people in most tracks is telling: people just aren't as good as the bots, and most people don't even want to try.

Marius was looking for a sortie partner, so we ran a few missions for the new Nightwave quest system.

I do still enjoy playing Warframe with friends, I think I just have to stop playing it solo for now.

I think I've played more different games in February than I have in a loooong time. I chalk that up to being mostly settled into my new place and not having any coursework to do.

I picked up Wargroove on the Switch. It's Advance Wars with a different theme. I'm generally enjoying the game but I wish that it had a few more improvements on the classic formula, like being able to quickly highlight the threat range of enemy units (you can see the range of one unit at a time, but Fire Emblem Awakening had a much nicer solution for this feature). The biggest wart that is held over from the classic AW games is that you don't win a map until you defeat the enemy general or stronghold. Often time I get to a point where it's obvious that I have the advantage and will win, but I still need to put 10-15 minutes into pushing all the way into enemy territory.

After finishing up the Titanfall 2 campaign, I started playing Iconoclasts on PS4, which was given away as part of PS Plus late last year. I've heard a few good things and saw it pop up on end-of-year lists as an underrated gem. It's a platformer game with some puzzle elements; it's a bit too linear for me to call it a Metroid-vania game, but it does bear a resemblance.

This game is much better than it has any right to be, especially since it's made by a one-person developer. The game has a really good feel; ledge-grabbing might feel a little sluggish, but besides that, navigating the levels and using the various tools at your disposal feels great.

At work, I've been continuing my progress in The Division -- I think there are only 2 missions left! We had some trouble on one mission so we leveled up and got some slightly better gear and are ready to attempt it again. Deep down I know that the game is pretty mundane -- not a lot of variety in guns, enemy archetypes, etc, but despite that it's very satisfying to play. The difficulty is just right for us; often we'll either make it through a mission by the skin of our teeth, or need to attempt it 2 or 3 times, adapting our strategy each time.

I started a new character in Guild Wars 2, playing with my girlfriend who has never played an MMORPG before. I'm reminded again just how overwhelming and underwhelming this game can be at the same time. The areas we're in are dead easy; we are clearing everything with just basic attacks and no real strategy. At the same time, wandering into town and seeing dozens of icons on the minimap is really flummoxing -- I don't think we'll have the patience or desire to learn things like crafting, banks, merchants, etc...because the game is easy enough to let us ignore it all. I figure we'll play a bit until we both do our level 10 and 20 story quests, but I can't imagine we'll get hooked into playing further than that. Still, it's a pretty chill experience, so we got what we signed up for.

Boasted about this in the original Beaten list from 2017, but having revisited this one by loading the save file from when I've beaten the game two years ago, I've achieved (grinded, let's be fair here) 100% completion in all the ways I cared about. Only had too look up a single collectible online as it doesn't show on the map.

Mathematically, this game is pretty broken.

I could tell the skill tree wasn't well designed from the start, since there were skills that cost a single skill-point, and skills that cost 4 or even 6, with very little difference in utility.

Imagine my surprise when the game repeatedly moved the goal posts. laugh

When you are unlocking 1-point skills, it takes 1500 experience to earn a point. Later in the game, when you are unlocking the last few expensive placeholders in the tree, it takes 5000 expereience. So what I thought was poor balancing at 400%, turns out to be more like 1200%.

Imagine my surprise when the game announces you've hit "the experience cap" before the story is over, with dozens of quests / collectables / etc still on the map.

Wut? laugh

Were they high when they were finalizing this?

All this accomplishes is that it forces you to complete about a dozen specific sidequests that give you skill points, but it also retroactively makes a lot of other things you have done worthless and kills anything else still on the map.

I've seen Ubisoft do some stupid things, but I think the character progression in Primal has become my definitive example of "how not to implement a skill tree." Just bizarre.

90 hours in and I'm on the final chapter. I'm still working on sidequests and minigames, but I plan to wrap up the main quest pretty soon. I'm a little bummed because I'm not very good at Outrun, so 3 million points seems beyond my ability.

I've also been playing Tales of Zestiria which is okay but not as good as Berseria.

Also Homeworld Remastered.

This game looks cool on paper, Deus Ex 2D, but everything is clunky. It feels like playing Another World from back in the early 90's.

And the voice acting...oh man, so terribly slow and terrible. Terrible.

Fighting is an injustice to video games. Punch, punch, punch or do jumping kick. Nothing else. The block is feeble slow, the duck as well. So boring.

Also, sometimes the ground isn't ground and you have to jump into darkness to figure out whether there is something there to grab onto or just a dying pit.

The premise sounds great, but the execution is death.

I finally got Sniper Assassin on Colorado (mostly by isolating and sniping the targets at short range. One of them I even knocked out and dragged into the basement where I could shoot their unconscious body with the sniper rifle without attracting attention. The final target I sniped while she was walking in the open, though, and I dropped the gun and walked to the nearest exit.) This got the "The Classics" challenge done for all the Legacy maps on Professional (SASO and Sniper on all maps). Next up, I'll go back and get lvl 20 on all the Hitman 2 maps, or maybe Patient Zero, first.

Made huge progress today.

Got into and through: Drowning Halls, Ice Mausoleum, Creation city and into Crystalline Mine.

Can't imagine much is left. Only one more skill (presumably wind) left to unlock. I still haven't gotten Teleport or Sprint mostly because they don't seem nearly as useful as the other skills available. But everything else I have unlocked is maxed out. And I'll probably be saving any extra points for the next attack magic I get.

Surprising no one, I'm sure, Persona 5 is still taking up the majority of my gaming time. I hit the 47 hour mark just a few minutes ago. My most recent milestone was the completion of the fourth palace, which I particularly enjoyed because of how different it was from the previous ones, both with regards to the reason you're there and the actual setting itself. As the plot continues to develop, I find myself still incredibly invested, and I'm excited to see how it all ties together.

At this point in the game, you're on summer break, so I've been using that time to focus on leveling up my social skills. I completed each round of the burger eating challenge, and I'm focusing primarily on leveling up my charm because Mokoto said I looked disheveled at times and won't go on the double date with me until I level it up. Cut me deep. I've also spent a fair amount of time and money upgrading weapons, armor, and personas, the last of which I have neglected to do for the past bit. My characters are all around level 35, so fusing Personas seems to give me more noticeably better results at this point, and sacrificing others for special items has helped out in a pinch as well.

It's a testament to this game's many strengths that I'm still excited to play at nearly 50 hours in. In a number of cases -- even in games that I genuinely enjoy -- I'm ready to just see the story end by this point, assuming I make it that far. But in this case, I've grown quite attached to all of the characters, building relationships with them, and slowly uncovering more plot elements. Here's to another 50 hours or so!

Very slowly progressing into the second stratum in Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard. The party is now mostly toward the level 20 end of the 15-20 range they're in, and the fights on 7F are mostly awful, for one reason or another. I honestly can't tell at this point if I'd be having more fun with a party of just five characters. For now, I'll keep nibbling at it here and there and making incremental progress.

It's a little amusing how note-for-note a number of dungeon elements are as compared to the first game. 7F is, once again, the first introduction of floors that deal damage when you step on them. Once again there's a horrifyingly strong FOE on 8F that you need to sneak past (somehow). Moas still have a brutal AOE attack, except now they have fewer HP and are normal encounters and not FOEs.

Also I've been dabbling in a couple of games from bundles. Fight'N Rage seems like a reasonably good arcade-style beat-em-up (I haven't played much Streets of Rage; the game it reminds me of is Final Fight). I haven't yet sat down and tried to see if I can quarter-feed through the game. Do note that the game is pretty grim.

And then there's Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, which is a bit of a mess. Assuming that I don't give up in disgust, I may have to play a game of this with all of the DLC disabled, because it's often unclear which of the random stuff would be present in the base game.

The game has a number of systems that it could do interesting things with, and I'm slowly coming to the realization that it's probably not going to do any of them. I assume that the display of "shares" isn't purely cosmetic, but if it's had any effect on the game so far, it hasn't been made clear.

Similarly for combat -- there's a JRPG combat system with some bells and whistles, but for all of the boss fights so far it's unclear that there's much that clever strategy will do for you if you show up to the boss fight and you're a level or two behind. Each level brings with it stat increases that have a substantial impact on the amount of damage the character takes and receives.

The story could theoretically develop into something interesting, but I have my doubts that it will, or that the writers have enough subtlety to treat it well if it does. There have been some cute references to this and that (in particular the "MAGES." character has a couple of good riffs on Steins;Gate), and there have been a few good lampshadings of game tropes, though on the whole that humor has been more hit or miss. And although there's not a lot of it, there's been a little bit of fan service, because of course there has.

I've mostly been trying to avoid using the DLC characters, which is just as well, I think, because the one time I did swap one in it seemed clear that the character just had straight-up better stats than any of the main characters (possibly this is the result of the equipment they came with).

I'll probably keep with it a bit longer to see whether various parts of the game resolve into something interesting at some point.

Kong: The 8th Wonder Of The World -- played on my GBA.

After landing on Skull Island and learning about Kong, the natives kidnapped Ann Darrow, forcing Jack Driscoll and Carl Denham to venture into the jungle to rescue her. Found and completed the first temple, then found my way to the second temple, which is where I stopped.

For the VGG Challenge, I had intended to start playing MediEvil on my PSP, but my memory card woes have made that game nearly unplayable, as it will lag out and then fail to read from the memory card right in the middle of the action. So I switched over to Kong instead, as I knew the GBA would not give me any grief.

The game is a nice UbiSoft adventure game. It reminds of the other UbiSoft GBA adventure game I own (The Mummy), albeit a bit graphically nicer. But otherwise it plays similar -- you control multiple characters whom you switch to at will, and each has different skills. Currently it's Jack and Carl -- Jack is the combat character with a machete, gun, and spears, while Carl is the heavy lifting character, who can push blocks and throw grenades. You fight through the jungle to find the temples, and then the temples are a series of puzzle rooms. You find materials by hacking at vegetation, and you can combine different materials to make new items, such as spears and grenades. Nothing groundbreaking, but a good deal of fun.

A nice addition is that occasionally you get to control Kong himself! These are timed 3/4 side scrolling brawling, where Kong must dodge stampedes and fight dinosaurs. A pretty small aspect of the game so far, but smashing dinosaurs as Kong is never a bad thing.

About an hour and a half in, and eager to dig deeper. I'll have to see about adding some images as well.

I thought this game might be more of a challenge, but we opened the scoring up early with 4 runs in the first inning! We went fairly cold after that, but the Namcos were very aggressive, with a lot of substitutions and pinch hitters to try and get some back. They threatened but did not score. Finally it's the bottom of the ninth. They put a man on, and then hit one over the right-center field fence to make it 4-2 with no outs. Uh oh. I'm able to get an out, but they put a man on. Then another out, but they get another man on, and suddenly its men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. And who comes to the plate but... their pitcher. Having used all of their subs earlier in the game, they did not have a pinch hitter when they needed one. 0-2 count, he hits a weak dribbler to the mound. I toss it to the catcher to tag out the runner, game over. Lucky escape there! Up next for the Giants are the Chunichi Dragons as we jump over over to the Central League.

Woody Pop -- Breaking bricks and saving the toy factory, one room at a time. Found some rooms I had not seen before and there's some tough ones in here for sure.

So I did something recently. I introduced video games to my 3.5 year old. I plugged in the SNES Classic and we "played" together for about an hour. Needless to say, he loved it, even just watching. We first tried playing Mario Kart together, but it was "too hard", and he wanted an easier game. Well, there's not really an easy one per se, so he just picked the next game. In that hour we went through about 8 or 9 games, I played while he watched until he got bored and wanted something different. He even learned how to hit the reset button to go back to the menu of games.

Of all the games, he we stayed on Star Fox the longest. It was the first time I've played this one, so I started on the easy path from Corneria. He had the other controller and was helping me with the lasers. We made through Corneria and the two space levels, but couldn't get through the meteor level. He's learning what a "boss" is, and each time a big enemy ship appeared, he would ask 'is this the boss?"

Anyway, the game itself is fun, but a bit of a hot mess. It's mainly just a lot of polygons zipping across the screen. Playing this also makes me think Star Fox 64 is more of a remake than a sequel!

Trying to get back into AoW3 after a short break. It has most of what I like in a game, and it avoids most of what I dislike. However, I find I'm only happy playing on a small, single-level map against one opponent. Even then I auto-resolve most combat in order to keep the game moving and get it finished in a reasonable amount of time.

Every time I try playing on a medium map or larger, or even a small map with both surface and subterranean levels, I get tired of it long before the scenario is over. I've all but given up entirely on the campaign, since the last two campaign scenarios I played were much too big and long for me.

I run into the same thing with most of my games: they're too big and/or long. But I like that I can acquire territory, build things, fight enemies, and even run a simple economy (it has to be a simple, mostly hands-off economic system, though). So I go for 4X strategy games but then regret their size and length. I play "duels" in Civilization.

Master of Orion is almost an exception. I usually play that on a medium-sized map, as the small one is too small. I rarely choose a large or huge map, but even those are playable since the game is relatively simple. Unfortunately MOO is old and not very pretty, and it lacks some of the cool features of AoW3 and Civ IV. So I keep coming back to those games--but I keep them very small.

Company of Heroes – still going strong. The single player campaign seems a bit uneven – I’ve had problems with a few of the scenarios, but most of them are pretty easy as long as I don’t rush it too much. Just finished blowing up seven panzers (mission 11) last night. Three of them attacked my base right at the end, which made it easy to hunt them down, I guess, but it was kind of surprising that they got by both of my groups going around the sides of the map. It’s quite a good game. Prompted a quick rush back to base before I didn’t have one anymore.

Armello – I really like this. Both its aesthetics and gameplay are great. I’ve beaten it once as Amber, against both of the rats and Sansa the bear (all AI). I started off trying to nab spirit stones and managed to use Amber’s impressive starting funds and the Game of Thrones card to leap ahead in prestige. Sansa and one of the rats were whole hog on corruption, while the other rat was also keen on stones. Sansa eventually started suiciding against the King, over and over, without hurting him, making my high prestige less than useful (the King needs to run out of life over time for a prestige win, and killing players restores his life). But I managed to nab the last two spirit stones I needed thanks in part to a teleport and completed my final quest, sneaking into the castle and cleansing the King’s Rot with my stones.

Eye of the Beholder II – I’ve gone through the dungeon and got all four horns. I’m now tackling the tower. …I can’t believe how well this game’s held up despite being almost thirty years old. I’ve recruited San-Raal and Cassandra. Amber might’ve been a better choice than Cassandra, in retrospect – spells are really good against the mantis warriors - but I’ve got Cassandra on bow, and she’s pretty handy. My one priest is multi-classed (a gnome who’s part-thief), and I think that might’ve been a mistake. Individual healing spells aren’t all that useful – better to just rest when you can. But Neutralize Poison is pretty essential and I can only cast it once thanks to my neutered priest levels. I expect that decision to haunt me in other ways deeper in the dungeon, as well.

Game: Skyrim VR

I'v played Skyrim before, but I tried the VR version of this and I'm enjoying it immensley. I've installed a bunch of mods for the graphics, effects, and ambient sounds, and it may be the most visually impressive and content-full VR game that exists right now. The VR implimentation doesn't use the grip controllers as well as games designed from the ground up for VR, but it's still pretty good, and once you get used to the initially awkward controls, it's more immersive than it ever was on a flat screen. I just played through the Bleak Falls Barrow quest and was impressed at how well and convincingly the environments translatd into VR. The free motion controls actually did make me feel a bit queazy after playing for a bit over an hour, though.

Smacking enemies with a virtual sword, blocking with a virtual shield, or shooting arrows or casting spells with each hand at two different enemies is just plain fun.

I continued my ES2 as the Hissho. The Lumeris begged me to ally with them and supplied a huge amount of Titanium to sweeten the deal. I have eliminated Horatio completely and now I hunt down the Umbral Choir. This may prove to be quite difficult as their homeworld is completely hidden. My systems are constantly being hacked by them, but I destroy any of their fleets that I find. Its an odd match up as we can hurt each other without being able to deliver a death blow.

Update #1:

I finished up my Hissho game with....
Spoiler (click to reveal)
a score victory by the time. Which I see as a failure to properly conquer the Galaxy. I was 2 turns away from Science Victory but I could never find the Umbral Choir's home system so I couldn't get the Supremacy victory.

Good times. I got a slightly higher score than I did with the United Empire game I finished last week.

Cheers All!

Update #2:

I started a new game last night as the Sophons (Science Nerds that like to blow things up) on a smaller 4p map. My expansion is going well and everyone is friendly so far... That will change!! I am facing the Riftborn, Vaulters and Hissho - which means I have very stiff competition. I am in the lead at this point only because I have assimilated allied with some minor factions and gained use of their existing fleets. As all progress in technology those fleets will become obsolete so I need to get my own military fleets in service to stay ahead of my opponents.

Still plowing my way though things here.

Did a bunch of hunting for various pelts for camp stuff and trapper outfits/clothing/saddles. Had a totally bizarre thing happen last night when I was at the trapper on the left side of the map. I had turned in pelts and was looking through the outfits/clothing to see if I had enough for certain items when I hear a bear really really loud. So I back out of the shopping screens, turn around and THERE'S A BEAR TWO FEET AWAY FROM ME!!!! So, I whip out the rifle and shoot it. Fine, right? No, the trapper is all pissed off that I used a gun right in front of his stall so he goes off and reports me to the authorities for "disturbing the peace". I ride off to avoid the po-po then swing back by, skin the bear and sell the skin to him and he acts like nothing happened. I ended up with a $5 bounty for the offence. Seriously? So I was supposed to just let the bear maul me and/or him? shake

Let's see. Got the legendary alligator. Terrifying thing that.

Met Hamish Sinclair and helped him out. Went fishing and hunting with him one time each. Nice guy. The kind of person Arthur needs in his life now that Hosea is dead

Headed into St Denis. Figured Arthur was getting whatever Hosea had. Tuberculosis. Yikes not fun!

Met up with Sadie. That gal has a deathwish.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Balloon flight bit was fun but holy cow did Sadie have the whole danged O'Driscoll clan on her butt! They just kept coming and coming. What with all the O'Driscolls I've been killing at camps, you'd think that they'd run out of the bastards finally

Need to have hubby post the video on YouTube that he took from his game the other night. A definite "how NOT to" video about a mission he was doing and failing big time at.

My fave thing to do now is get a second horse (either taming wild or catching a Leymone/ODriscoll horse) and go about doing my thing. That way, if I get two big items for stowing on a horse, I can take them both and not worry. Then eventually once the second horse is at a better bonding level, I sell it off for a nicer sum and repeat the process.

Time to brush up on my classic videogame education. I gave this a short try 7 years ago but never proceeded beyond the initial scene. I'm in now more than 10 hours, entered the lower plane and Morte just got kidnapped. It's the first time I looked at a walkthrough as I don't want to waste countless hours in searching for the right skull. Also, I looked up where I can specialize in magic although I'm not sure if it were better for my playstyle to stay a fighter.

I don't get the specialization system at all as I never played any D&D/AD&D. This talk about double skilled characters is more confusing than anything. I also wasn't able to use the weapon skill points for anything so far. Also, I don't really use any skill in fighting so far. I just click on one enemy, let all my party members attack it and hope for the best. One or two fights were a bit hairy but altogether I did fine. In the caves below Pharod's estate, when the enemies were too tough, I just rushed into the rooms, grabbed the needed items and rushed out again.

I'm a bit concerned that I will not be able to complete the game this way without a clear idea about how to build my character. I read that there are one or two tough fights later on which I might fail which would be really annoying.
