Starting in 2014, I backed my first Kickstarter project. At the time, I thought it would be the only project I would back.

A few years later, and many project later, Kickstarter is clearly not a passing activity for me.

This list is a collection of my experiences with Kickstarter.

I did not include my actual funding amount for the KS; I am not sure that is as important as the pledge level which provides more details of what was backed.

If you think that other information should be included (product, campaign details, or personal thoughts, play-throughs, ratings, etc), feel free to leave a comment. Feel free to add you experiences if you also backed (or decided not to back) the KS product.

I will continue to update and edit the entries as my experiences with each Kickstarter campaign changes and campaigns are fulfilled.

Product: Dwarven Forge's Caverns
Date Backed: MARCH 2014
Backer #: 2390
Pledge Level: 3 Cavern Sets (Expertly Hand Painted) + 2 sets unpainted and the water cavern as an add-on
Funded: 8 APRIL 2014
Date Delivered: NOV 2014

Why Backed:
I've collected Dwarven Forge for many years, and all my sets were the original resin edition. This new version offered more pieces at a lower cost. I passed on the first Kickstarter since I felt I had enough Dungeon pieces. I wanted more cavern pieces so this Kickstarter was very suitable for expanding the cavern collection. I also wanted some unpainted set to custom paint on my own.

The stretch goals practically doubled the size of the pieces and added more versatility to the cavern sets. So that was a major motivator to back the project.

I wanted to back for more pieces, but it wasn't in my budget, especially for my first Kickstarter campaign.

Kickstarter Experience:
Dwarven Forge communication was great throughout the campaign. They were also very quick to answer questions. I wanted a mix of painted and unpainted but there was not a pledge level for that. They provided advice to purchase add-on for the unpainted sets. The add-ons were not advertised earlier in the campaign, but they were added due to customer demand.

Product Impression:
I really liked the pieces. My resin cavern set were based on a 4"x4: tiles set, which made smaller cavern designs difficult. The new set was based on a standard 2"x2" square, like the dungeon room tiles, so they provided me more flexibility in cavern design and integrated better than the resin sets with the dungeon tiles.

The carry bag was handy for carrying the tiles, but not for storage and did not allow for any sort of organizing. The carry bag has since been repurposed as a general game bag.

The spider webs are one of my favorite items. They are a unique item that I could not easily replicate on my own. It was nice to have a dungeon decor item instead of just another tile.

The water cavern pieces were slightly different in coloration from the resin water tiles, but the flexibility of the smaller dimensions made up for the difference.

The Kickstarter advertised a free online Map Maker program. However,it fell short for me. While it did include all the tiles in this Kickstarter, it did not include any of the classic resin pieces, making the program too restrictive for my dungeon design options.

Product: Dwarven Forge's Modular City Builder Terrain System
Date Backed: MARCH 2015
Backer #: 578
Pledge Level: Empire Level (Hand Painted) (enough for ten buildings) plus add-on for Wall Battlements.
Funded: 2 APRIL 2015
Date Delivered: JANUARY 2016

Why Backed:
This was the first Dwarven Forge set for buildings. Up till now, everything was dungeons and caverns. I tried other building terrain and was not satisfied with the results.

Kickstarter Experience:
I wanted enough pieces for a small village (so I was backing this set big). I liked the different pledge levels that gave the backers a choice in how many buildings they wanted to make. These levels were initially limited and I missed the Empire level the first time, so I backed the smaller set, Capital City, twice. Dwarven Forge expanded the number of backers allowed for the Empire level and I was able to switch my backing to the right package. When I received my pieces, I noticed one small piece was missing and one piece has a defect. Dwarven Forge sent replacement pieces within the month (after the completed fulfilling KS backer orders.

Product Impression:
i was a little hesitant about the new build design. Overall, I am happy with the product. The amount of extras that came with the stretch goals provided way too many terrain dressing pieces that I do not use. The design of the building are somewhat limiting, forcing buildings to be in 4"x4" squares (20'x20'), but they are more versatile than the other systems I have tried. But the pieces are beautiful and functional. Perfect for building villages and city sections. I have used them often in my games since then.

Product: Alien Frontiers Big Box - Reloaded!
Date Backed: MARCH 2015
Backer #: 1534
Pledge Level: 1 Copy Alien Frontiers Big Box
Funded: 26 MARCH 2015
Date Delivered: December 2016 (Delayed 9 months)

Why Backed:
I'm a big fan of big box games that collect all the expansions and a game together in one box for convenience and savings. I saw that Alien Frontiers was a popular game on BGG and I did not have any game with the mechanic that was used in this game. So I took a leap of faith.

Kickstarter Experience:
The company ran into two delays. First was the Chinese New Year which affected production timelines. Second, their supplier of the plastic pieces was no longer able to support the product, so the company had to find a new supplier. The company notified backers of problems about a month or two before delivery, which was probably a little late in the production timelines to remain on schedule for backers. In the end, there was still details missing on the faction board and faction stickers were sent to backers to apply to their faction boards. They were a nice quality and looked nice on the board.

Product Impression:
The over all production was really nice. However, I was initially not overwhelmed by the colony tokens. They looked a little too much like cheap gumball dispenser toys. I did not know what I was expecting, but these did not impress, and the delay for these plastic tokens did not seem warranted.
I really enjoyed playing the game and I can see why it was rated high on BGG. The game took a little longer than expected, and my acceptance of the plastic colony tokens improved. They are actually very neat tokens.
The Generator miniatures are also neat, but for us new players, we found that the counters worked better because it labeled the item -- the miniature were not clear enough to us (despite the color coding).
The rocket die were novelties that we decided not to use. The square die were better. We also never used the back side of the game board with the rocket shaped spaces. So, it was a little overproduced. But we liked the game very much.

Product: Tavern Dungeon Decor 28mm miniatures
Date Backed: MARCH 2015
Backer #: 462
Pledge Level: Basic Set
Funded: 31 MARCH 2015
Date Delivered: June 2015 (last batch delivered)

Why Backed:
Tavern chairs and tables are unnecessarily expensive in the hobby. Dungeon Decor offered a nice set at a reasonable price. I also liked the seated miniatures to fill out a tavern scene in an RPG.

Kickstarter Experience:
Delivery was fairly quick -- It had to be done in batches as he had over 1000 orders. I was towards the end, so my delivery came after a couple of months.

Product Impression:
Lots of stretch goals bits and bobs in the Kickstarter to add more details to the tables. Tables and chairs were appropriate in more than just the tavern setting, which was nice. I STILL haven't finished painting all the extra small pieces, but I do not know that I would use them either. Main set is nice and has been used on more than one occasion.

Why Backed:
Royal family genealogies is a bit of a hobby for my family, so this game intrigued us.

Kickstarter Experience:
Updates were short and minimal.

Product Impression:
This is not a game for everyone. However, it is a game that my family likes. The theme appeals to us greatly, and we enjoyed it, especially the managing and building the family dynasty. Mechanics were functional, and the components were quality. The game delivered exactly what the KS promised. When my daughter moved away, she missed the game so much she requested it for a gift. It was MUCH harder to find then, but was able to find an extra copy (at a premium at the time) for her.

Date Backed: 10 APRIL 2015
Backer #: 482
Pledge Level: BRONZE LEVEL PATRON
Funded: 15 MAY 2015
Date Delivered: 20 FEBRUARY 2016

Why Backed:
I'm a sucker for medieval themes, and I am interested in how religious themes are woven into it. So this game seemed right up my ally. At the time, The Pillars of the Earth was out of print, so this seemed like a game to fill that theme void for me.

Kickstarter Experience:
The updates consistently mostly of informing us when the stretch goals that upgraded the components happened. The upgraded components were very nice and I was happy to see so many achieved. The company was really engaged with the backer, which earned it a lot more attention for the campaign.

Product Impression:
We enjoyed the production. The artwork is beautiful. The components are great. The game plays exactly like we expected. It does play a little slow, and it does take a long time to play, especially for five players. I need to play it some more.

Product: Carson City Big Box Edition
Date Backed: 20 JUNE 2015
Backer #: 994
Pledge Level: SHERIFF
Funded: 15 JULY 2015
Date Delivered: JANUARY 2016

Why Backed:
As I have said before, I am a fan of "Big Box" collections that pack all the expansion in with a popular base game. I did not have a Western themed game in my collection, other than BANG! The Dice Game. I saw that Carson City ranked high on BGG, and it was a worker placement game, so the game seemed like a good fit for me. The production looked off the charts, and the stretch goals were only going to make it better.

Kickstarter Experience:
Stretch goal updates occurred throughout the campaign. The custom Teacher card contest was an excellent idea and though I did not participate in that contest, I was eager to see who would be selected. Stretch goals updates let us know which components were being upgraded for the final product.

Product Impression:
The production of the game was off the chart. There was SOO much stuff, a lot of it was duplicate components (standard components plus wooden upgrades). The KS felt overproduced. I eventually set a lot of component aside, including many of the upgraded parts. The game is lengthy, especially with five players. We really enjoyed the game. We need to play it again to get a better hang of the game. Perhaps I will add it to my 10x10 challenge.

Pledge Level: --- EARLY AT THE FACTORY --- - 1x *FACTORY FUNNER crowdfund edition*
Funded: 2 OCTOBER 2015
Date Delivered: MARCH 2016

Why Backed:
The gameplay appeared interesting. I like the idea of building a machine piece by piece. I also figured it would be interesting to my more mechanic minded players. This was also a Crowd Funder edition only and it did not appear that the game would be available later. So I may have suffered a mild case of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

Kickstarter Experience:
Updates showed the game in development, progress on the kickstarter, and stretch goals unlocked. There were more updates after the campaign than during. Updates since the delivery of the game has continued to notify former backers of expansions and other games.

Product Impression:
There are a lot of components in this game -- almost all of it cardboard. It is a heavy game and my box split shortly after getting the game. The game play was fun but a bit challenging for my players who do not have spacial management skills. I enjoyed the game but it has not gotten a lot of game play. I like it because it is so different from the other games we have.

Date Backed: 15 OCTOBER 2015
Backer #: 5,905
Pledge Level: One copy of Wizard School
Funded: 29 OCTOBER 2015
Date Delivered: JANUARY 2017

Why Backed: The idea seemed cute and I did not have many cooperative games. I thought this would appeal to my kids. It was funded in the first hour or so, so there must be a lot of fans of the game or the company. And the cost was very minimal.

Kickstarter Experience: During the campaign, most of the updates seemed focused on acknowledging their successful campaign, which I did not find helpful in deciding on the game. The "adult" Dirty Little Secrets seemed to get a lot of attention (and backers), but that simply did not appeal to me and seemed contrary to the kid friendly artwork. I was a little surprised that they were still playtesting the game after the campaign ended. Shipment of the final game did not occur until six months later. I can't complain because those who backed the Dirty Little Secrets did not receive their additional content until May 2019.

Product Impression: The cards were beautiful and the game looked great. However, the rules on each of the cards were not always clear. gameplay was fine and interesting. There appears to be some nice combinations that could be set up, but my kids and I could not pull them off very much. We lost our first game and won our second, but the game seemed to drag on a little too long for what it is. We haven't played it again since we first received it over two years ago.

Date Delivered: MAY 2016

Why Backed: I found the educational and historical them of the game fascinating. I also liked that it was an area control game, which puts a different twist on the game than what I was expecting. I do not own many area control games and this one seemed like a nice enough theme for it. I also liked the variability of the exhibit halls which should help keep the game replayable.

Kickstarter Experience: Not a lot of updates other than when it was done and when it was shipped. During the campaign, there were several voting options for exhibits, but I did not back until the end and I am not sure I would have had a preference one way or the other on same of the votes.

Product Impression: Nice production, and a very nice game. Thoroughly enjoyed playing the game. I need to get it to the table more often though. I was glad to see it in stores later -- but you can't beat the Kickstarter price.

Why Backed: Because its Dwarven Forge Terrain and it is CASTLES! This is one I have been waiting for. It was a REAL struggle for me to restrain myself on this Kickstarter. It had so much I wanted. Castles are a staple in my campaign and I wanted to represent them with something more appropriate than dungeon tiles.

Kickstarter Experience: There was always something new added to the campaign as an add-on. They are very responsive to the backers, but I think they are actually one step ahead of theme. The designs are VERY well thought out. Production updates were continuous.

Product Impression: Great product! I had a couple of mismatched pieces, but after informing Dwarven Forge, they were replaced as soon as the entire shipment was completed. It was a minor inconvenience. This product makes one hungry for more.

Pledge Level: EXPANSION + SELLSWORD V2
Funded: 21 JUNE 2016
Date Delivered: JULY 2017

Why Backed: Fell in love with Xia and I liked the new options that the Kickstarter offered. More Xia! There was ALOT of stuff in the expansion. And the new mechanics helped managed the economy better, so that was a plus.

Kickstarter Experience: Far Off Games laid everything out at the beginning of their campaign so there wasn't much need to provide updates during the funding. Afterwards, they were great about keeping everyone posted on the progress. I especially like their attention to detail and quality control updates. They do not accept a substandard product from the manufacturer.

Product Impression: The expansion is great and we do not play without it, especially the economy management. the pre-painted minis are wonderfully made. The game still takes a long time to play, so it is an investment of time that I have a hard time getting everyone to commit.

Pledge Level: 4 - Four us
Funded: 17 JULY 2016

Why Backed: I wanted something that better fit my games than by gym bag or backpack. Having a thematic back wasn't a bad idea either. My collection had grown large enough to warrant having more than one back when we go on the road.

Kickstarter Experience: Not many updates needed during the campaign other the new design options they offered. Most updates after funding were focused on delivery at the convention for those picking them up there. A weird comment made during the updates was followed by an apology announcement, calling even more attention to the comment.

Product Impression: Products are great! The graphics have an "iron-on" look about them, but they are high quality. I had have expected them to have been silk-screened for long term durability. I have used them several times to carry my games, and I have filled them to maximum capacity without a hint of tear.

Product: Medici: The Card Game
Date Backed: 21 OCTOBER 2016
Backer #: 707
Pledge Level: MEDICI LOT (US/CAN)
Funded: 3 NOVEMBER 2016
Date Delivered: MAY 2017

Why Backed: I heard great things about Medici the board game, and this KS offered both in one of the pledges. I am not normally a fan of auction games, but I heard that this was one of the better ones. Of course, the theme is a good sell for me, so I backed both.

Kickstarter Experience: Updates focused on the development of the cards, but my ulterior motive was the board game. Updates were provided on the developmental stages, mostly in terms of when and to whom the games were being delivered. I also got announcements of other other games they were Kickstarting, such as the King's Road which is next on the list. The board game was delivered immediately, while the card game came much later.

Product Impression: Unfortunately, this has been a case of the board game being so good that we haven't given the card game a chance (yet). The Medici board game is great. The card game, we simply haven't tried yet. If we wanted the Medici experience, we play the board game instead.

Pledge Level: SPECIAL FOR SUPPORTERS OF MEDICI:TCG
Funded: 23 MARCH 2017
Date Delivered: OCTOBER 2017

Why Backed: A couple of reasons, actually, but none of the obvious. First, I got a special rate for backing the previous KS. Second, It is a Reiner Knizia game, which means it should be good. I wasn't sure about the fantasy setting, but I felt it was worth the chance, even if it was another area control game.

Kickstarter Experience: Updates included announcements of meeting stretch goals for a higher quality production. There were some delays in getting the game to us, but they were minor. As is their trend, I received notices of other KS projects they were launching. I did not take them up on those because I was not sure how good this game would be yet.

Product Impression: The production quality met expectations. The game did not look like much at first. However, it played very well. Perhaps it excelled in its simplicity. I was able to teach this game to novice gamers and they loved it. It gets much more replay than I expected for something that is so simple.

Product: Dungeon of Doom: Handcrafted Game Terrain by Dwarven Forge
Date Backed: 4 JULY 2017
Backer #: 2,583
Pledge Level: Build Your Own Dungeon
Funded: 11 JULY 2017
Date Delivered: AUGUST 2018

Why Backed: Back to the dungeon with dungeon tiles. New designs here. Even though I have all that I think I need for a dungeon, there were a few new design pieces that I wanted to have. I was very selective in my backing this time, having invested heavily in the previous two Dwarven Forge Kickstarters.

Kickstarter Experience: With SOOO many add-ons available, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the options. It almost takes a CPA to budget the choices properly. Lots more bells-and-whistles in this KS and I felt some of the pieces were too unique to add to my collection. Nonetheless, the company does a great job keeping everyone posted of new options, add-ons, production progress, and delivery. The Google spreadsheet and pledge calculator were indispensable.

Product Impression: Fantastic product delivered on time. I had one mismatched door, which was replaced as soon as all the KS backerkits were fulfilled.

Date Backed: 8 FEBRUARY 2018
Backer #: 4,022
Pledge Level: MINI (MISSIONS & POWERS)
Funded: 20 FEBRUARY 2018
Date Delivered: JANUARY 2019

Why Backed: It was a small addition to a favorite game. Plus, the add-on include more metal coins. I backed only for the new min-expansion and add-on coins, but it was nice to see that they were offering the old KS package and the full XIA game as a pledge level.

Kickstarter Experience: As before, Far Off Games involved the backers. There were votes on the add-on coin design as well as for names of some new powers. Production updates followed until delivery.

Product Impression: Coins look great. I haven't had the chance to add the new cards yet, but they are part of my base box now. I am not sure if there is anything more than this game could possibly need.

Date Backed: 14 JULY 2018
Backer #: 91
Pledge Level: $1 (Add-on: Bazaar)
Funded: 15 JULY 2018
Date Delivered: OCTOBER 2018

Why Backed: I liked the concept of the Kickstarter, but I only supported to pick up the one game I was interested in: Bazaar, a game my family had when I was a child. It wasn't exactly the same game -- the only from my childhood was a 3M game, but I wanted to bring it back to my current family.

Kickstarter Experience: I did not pay much attention to the updates. I was simply using the KS to order another game. I probably could have ordered directly from the company or other online retailer, but I wanted to support the company's effort in this Kickstarter.

Product Impression: Bazaar, purchased as an add-on, arrived almost immediately. We have enjoyed the game and it makes the occasional play at the table. It is deceptively a brain burner and not a casual game.

Date Backed: 15 JULY 2018
Backer #: 2770
Pledge Level: Master Builder
Funded: 26 JULY 2018
Date Delivered: 27 AUGUST 2019

Why Backed: I've been looking for another train game, besides Ticket to Ride, that I could get my family to play. My wife loves worker placement and the original Snowdonia rated highly on BGG. As it is a deluxe version, I could get a high production of a good game.

Kickstarter Experience: There were contest during the campaign that fans of the game really got involved in. Having no experience in the game, and being a very late backer, I did not participate. Seeing the huge fan base gets me excited for the game though. Updates on the production have been provided routinely. Every detail that they have inspected has been shared with us. Seeing the quality of each piece during the production has given me great confidence in the quality of the final game. I can't wait to play it!

Product Impression: Slight delay in delivery but the product is beautiful. It is chock full of gaming goodness. All the components look beautiful. BGG had links on how to store the items, which was helpful, and it also had the breakdown of the hundreds of card sets. I can't wait to play.

Product: Martial Art: Battlefields
Date Backed: 26 JULY 2018
Backer #: 97
Pledge Level: Base Game + Expansion (2 players)
Funded: 23 AUGUST 2018
Date Delivered: February 2019

Why Backed:
I saw the artwork and fell in love with it. It had a low price point, so I felt it was worth a chance. Since it was an expansion to a game already in existence, I reasoned that the game had to be good if it warranted an expansion. So my pledge included Martial Art.

Kickstarter Experience:
Updates were frequent but felt like it catered to those who knew the game already. There were still development discussion on an appropriate design for the box to hold the game and expansion. There appeared to be a push to make the game support 4 players, which required two sets of the game. As I did not know enough about the game, I did not invest in more than just the one set for a two-player game.

Product Impression:
The cards are beautiful. That alone is worthy of attention. So far, I've only managed a couple of plays of the game. It plays quick, which is nice. My son likes it, but he has beaten me soundly each time. I haven't played with the expansion yet, but I have it when I am ready for it.

Backer #: 407
Pledge Level: Franchise + Queenies
Funded: 14 SEPTEMBER 2018
Date Delivered: 20 NOVEMBER 2018

Why Backed:
I really wanted the Medieval Merchant game, but I understood that there were several flaws with the game. It being a medieval theme appealed to me. The Franchise updated the rule set and modernized the theme. It had a nostalgic theme (1960's USA) for the business, which was a slick redesign. I was hesitant on the new theme. The pitch for the game was it was a strategy game without any luck. It promised a tight design. The other games in the KS did not appeal to me.

Kickstarter Experience:
Updates were very limited, but the games were ready almost immediately, so I received the game shortly after the KS closed. Can't beat that.

Product Impression:
I only got one play in so far, and I got some new gamers to try the game out. They appreciated the design of the game -- they beat me! I do like the mechanics and game play. The art is consistent with the theme, but it is not a great selling point for me. I want to play it more, but it takes longer to play than the box states, especially with 5 players.

Backer #: 128
Pledge Level: Round World Pledge
Funded: 20 SEPTEMBER 2018
Date Delivered: 25 OCTOBER 2019

Why Backed:
Well, I REALLY wanted the Discworld: Ankh-Morpork game, and it is unlilkely that it will be reprinted anytime soon. Nanty Narking is a re-implementation of Discworld: Ankh-Morpork, so this should get me the same type of game. The theme setting may be different, but it is not too far removed. Martin Wallace is a well-known and quality game designer, so this game should be an excellent re-implementation. As a lover of metal coins, I backed the higher level for the metal coins.

Kickstarter Experience:
Story based updates occurred throughout the campaign. It was a nice flavor approach but not informative about the game progress. Though, the story approach did speak to the care taken to build an immersive theme in the game.

Product: The Jasper: A Board Gaming Table
Date Backed: 11 OCTOBER 2018
Backer #: 1119
Pledge Level: The Jasper Gaming Table and Topper (Add-on: an extra table and topper)
Funded: 11 OCTOBER 2018
Date Delivered:

Why Backed:
A dedicated game table has been a dream component in my game room for many years. As I play wargames, RPGs with full terrain set-up and board games with large game groups, I wanted a table that met all my needs, not just some of them. Game Tables have either come at a premium price or sacrificed too many features that I needed. This kickstarter offered a sweet spot for me. Better yet, they were made only a few hours from me, so I could save on shipping by picking it up personally.

Kickstarter Experience:
The company has been very helpful in answering questions and accommodating backers. The expected availability date has shifted a couple of times, first earlier, then later, but it has depended on how quick they are able to turn batches. I eagerly await my tables -- but I will be one of the last backers to get his table.

Product Impression: Picked up my two tables in person direct from the maker in Jasper on 28 JUNE. Assembly was a snap, though I had to download the instruction -- they were not included in the boxes. They are beautiful and we played on them right away. Within the week, I hosted a game day with another family -- one table supported the kid's D&D game, while the parents were on the other table playing board games. So far, all our games were played with the topper emplaced. We have not played a game on the game mat within the game well yet. However, the game well was the perfect are for one of my children to assemble a large Lego kit.

Backer #: 2414
Pledge Level: Ultimate Conqueror (english)
Funded: 20 NOVEMBER 2018
Date Delivered: 2 NOVEMBER 2019 (a few months late)

Why Backed:
Given the success of Champions of Midgard, and discovering that it was a worker placement (my favorite mechanic) viking game, I felt this game would be a good fit for me and my game group. The production looks high end, and the KS offered several exclusive that made the backing more appealing than waiting until it hit the stores.

Kickstarter Experience:
Updates have focused on stretch goals and numerous pledge manager reminders. The Gametrayz support has been billed as a selling point, but the design looks basic and functional, not exceptional.

Product Impression: I received a very nice product, though some received theirs damaged. The game tray were a little thinner than expected and some received theirs damaged. The cards were not the same material as advertised, but the artwork and designs are very nice. The extra wooden tokens were nice, but not really functional. Tray organization is functional, but just that.

Gameplay is awesome. We immediately played several games in a row and we are looking to get more plays in. We have already explored several winning strategies. We look forward to trying out other strategies. One of the things we like most about the game is that everyone gets to take an action when a player activates a location (sort of like Puerto Rico).
