This last week I watched Endgame. I underestimated how long it would be, and how late it kept me up. My wife and daughter were fast asleep by the time I got home.

I was at a company benefits meeting, hearing the typical 401k pitch. The presenter made the point that time is the most valuable resource. A similar “No amount of money ever bought a second of time” statement was mentioned in a movie I recently watched.

Time travel is a very popular sci-fi trope. It tries to explore time paradoxes: Change the past to change the future of the past. I tend to hate it as a plot device. It’s a cheap way to write intelligent characters without needing to exercise intelligence for the author/writer. Probably because some physicists speculated from Einsteinian theories that gravitational curvature has resulted in inverse tori of spacetime, in which mass which passes through gravitational phenomena like black holes exceed beyond the constant, changing at the quantum level to allow mass interactions of higgs field of the present, pass macroscopic mass time dilation and into the past. They, by the way, don't touch yourself. “Oh! If you change the past, you’ll destroy the fabric of time!” filled with pseudoscience technobabble. Really, the smartest thing ever written in pop culture regarding time travel is that it is “Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey.”

So y'all know I like dice, and y'all know I like trick-taking games. I've always been intrigued by the idea of them in combination, and while the only other one I've tried crashed and burned (*ahem* Skull King: Das Würfelspiel), I decided to jump in on Thrown despite Tom Vasal's negative review. The good news is that the game basically works (another "did not expect that from WizKids" moment), and the alterations to the format do make for some interesting choices. Deciding whether to spend dice for their powers or keep them to try and win tricks is a solid foundation, as is the cycling powers for each die color and the "sixes of the non led color are trump" rule to keep each trick dramatic.

However, your decision pool literally constrained by the amount of dice you have means that in practice you're not actually making that many choices at any given time. I don't know that the design would necessarily be improved by more complexity (I also have yet to try the advanced cards that change up the colors/add new abilities), but I found the experience a bit more flat than I would have liked, despite it being more solid than I expected.

I finally got a chance to give Opener of the Way a spin in our most recent game of CW. It helped that I've now seen it played a number of times both well and poorly, so I had a good idea of what to build for. The drawback is that it seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony (set yourself up for a giant turn using Dragon Ascending/Descending), though I did enjoy the ability to summon monsters at anyone's gate. I unfortunately didn't make any use of Million Favored ones as I largely used They Break Through to summon singletons to harass other player's cultists (and thus didn't want to be an aggressor lest I lose my only unit in battle), though I was able to warp an opponents gate across the map, which is always fun. I also managed to get a bunch of spellbooks early as everyone went very gate-heavy from round one. I managed a very decent second (behind the usual nigh-unstoppable behemoth that is Great Cthulhu), and had a grand old time.

And finally, I secured a copy of the newest printing of Lost Cities which includes gorgeous new artwork and inclusion of Lost Cities: Expedition 6 – The Lost Expedition. My mom really loves this game, and we got a few games in on Monthers Day using all 6 expeditions. The game isn't terribly different in the new configuration: There's a bit more time added on due to the additional cards, as well as more opportunities to make mistakes, but strategies are largely the same. I suppose there's more of a chance for players to get the 8 card 20 point bonus with the game clock running longer, but we didn't see it but once in our plays. Still a fantastic game IMO, and happy to own the new printing.

No creeper stories this week unless you count the person I play solo games with.

Brew Crafters - Brought this out after what seems like forever (checks last played, almost a year). It was well received even by one of our regulars that usually dislikes euros/worker placement games. Brew Crafters is also a peculiar game in that after setup there is no randomness. No hidden goals, no events, no secretly stashed victory points. It’s just all out there, perfect information. We played 5 players and nothing seemed terribly unfair, I was worried we wouldn’t finish but we made a good pace despite 4 newbies. Solid stuff. I usually go stout heavy strategy but went for hops infusers this time which is extra points for throwing extra hops in a recipe.
External image

Coffee Roaster - I’ve had this on my shelf since I picked it up at BGGCON last year. Decided to finally learn it and crank out a couple solo plays.

Charterstone - Our weekly Friday group started this campaign sorta without me (ouch) but I’m willingly just jumping in as a stand-in for people that can’t make it. I stood in for Louie. I won the first game so if he doesn’t win the entire campaign that’s completely on him. We had one rules mistake not super major just annoying, we didn’t start with the 4 coins so we spent maybe an extra hour slowly cranking out resources and converting them to money just to build anything. Overall impressions, it’s acceptable I guess, probably need more than the first game to judge it.

Spoilers :
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The most interesting thing was someone went heavy on building stuff which might set them up for future success idk. But they did unlock the minions which seem cool. They have the potential to make a robot factory and it looks cool. I went heavy on getting two assistants that combo well and just hitting objectives. After we filled in our stars for bonuses the rules explainer read in more depth what the capacity bonus is which seems really powerful but he was the only one who hadn’t filled in there stars and so he is the only one who went towards that progress which felt a bit dirty. I went for boats because I thought it was funny.

Lancaster
- 5 players with actual rules this time! 5 players is good, lots of punching each other in the face and conflicts don’t seem as risky. One person was doing well on conflicts and just getting good points on Laws but had no nobles. I went hard on nobles but was competing heavily with 2 other people to complete out sets and was getting pushed out hard and eventually ran out of squires. I still managed to have enough for a final jump in scoring to get exactly 1 more point than conflict heavy person. It was close. Sounded like people enjoyed how interactive it was with both the law voting and the knight jousting.

Other -

Kublacon - It’s next week. Feeling the hype since more and more people from my local groups are going so hoping to just go ham on some open gaming. This is my first time GMing for a free badge. As someone has been telling me it’s a great way to get a pass and guaranteed plays of the games you want to play. We’ll see how it goes as I’m teaching Millennium Blades & Spirit Island and those games are long and from my experience are huge hit or miss for people.

Costco - I was at Costco and apparently they sell Bulgogi at Costco now. It’s acceptable.

Cthulhu Wars - No shipping info but apparently should ship this week according to the shipping company. Only pledged $1 on Daemon Sultan because I was a bit salty from the whole experience recently.

Kickstarter - I’m interested in Alban Viard’s Clinic. Both because I was already interested in the game but it was out of print and stupid expensive, but now it’s still stupid expensive but has the art direction from Ian O’Toole as well as higher quality components. My big hesitation is his games are generally rough to teach and very much “If you mess up the first turn you’re going to have a bad time”.

The Rise of Queensdale x2 - Enjoying this so far, but I feel like I'm seriously lagging behind everyone. According to the rules there are ways to catch up, so we'll see.

Yahtzee - Played while waiting for the rest of our group for Trickerion. The original roll and write! Still fun!

Trickerion: Legends of Illusion - This was enjoyable. I want to play again. I didn't come in last so that was cool. I feel like 5 rounds is kind of short? Or they don't really want you to work up to the larger tricks...

On My Mind

- I guess I haven't really been playing a lot of games lately... Not sure why, but that'll most likely change later this week because GEEKWAY!

- I got beer for the swap and beer for my side swap with Raf. Whoop! For Mother's Day I took myself on a Mother's Day beer tour. Went to four stops one included my monthly board game meetup. When I got there everyone was in the middle of a game so I played Octopath and chatted. Then moved on to my next stop. Even though I didn't play games it was still an overall good day.

- Saturday we took Lizzy to the zoo for the first time. He favorite was the elephants, but she loved so many of the animals. It was the perfect day for the zoo!

- ALSO WHILE I WAS OUT SUNDAY LIZZY POOPED ON HER POTTY!!! (then the dog ate it). BUT THEN she pooped on the potty again after I got home without anyone telling/asking her to! So, yay progress in potty training!

- Dragon Age: Origins has been super fun. I've only played about 4 hours so far, but I've been enjoying it quite a lot.

- Tomorrow Lizzy has an eye dr's appointment where they're going to dilate. So we'll be there for at least two hours. Not really looking forward to it, but she usually handles it well. I think she'll end up getting new glasses this time since it's been a year. We'll see!

Spaceteam: I tried this out with my family last night and it was super stressful and fun. Reminds me of something you'd see in a Jackbox Party Pack.

Imperial Settlers: Amazons: My first time playing as the Amazons. It was weird getting into their groove of building and destroying your own faction buildings. I won (on a tiebreaker) though, so clearly I had the best strats.

Thunderstone Quest: Matt and I tried out the Epic Thunderstone variant for the first time. We were both not very impressed by it. While it's cool to see a bunch of different items/weapons/spells and heroes pop up, it does end up feeling kind of difficult to strategically build your deck.

---

On My Mind:

We went to our first pregnancy class on Thursday. It was the stork tour where they take you around the floor and explain the logistics of where to go, what the rooms look like, etc. It helped to assuage some of my abject terror at the whole process. We have the breastfeeding class tonight. In June, we have the labor & delivery and newborn care classes.

Yesterday, we spent the day at my parents' for Mother's Day. I've had a really obnoxious backache (under my right shoulder blade) for the past few weeks, which makes sitting at a table difficult. So instead of playing games, we did one of my parents' favorite activities: watching a Hallmark movie. We all MST3K'ed the whole thing, which ended up being a really hilariously fun experience. I recommend this as the only way to watch one of those kinds of movies.

Reviews
Legends Untold is nifty. Very nifty.

Vindication
Blah. Modern Euro of turning cubes into other cubes to score points. It's dressed up as this thematic almost adventure game thing with a cool setting concept (kind of fantasy Lost), but it doesn't deliver. It's rote and it encourages you to pump the same actions repeatedly near the end of play.

My biggest complaint is that the core loop is simple, but there's all this obfuscation and crap thrown on top of it, making it a more complicated game than it needs to be. It does have a whole bunch of expansion modules and I'd play again if Aaron pushes for it (he bought it). I almost requested a review copy of this and I'm glad I didn't.

Rating is 5 instead of lower because there a couple of interesting flourishes but not enough to pull it out of the medicore range.

Unlock!
Scheherezade's Tale was great. I still think the consistency of this line is phenomenal. Every single adventure offers something new and different, utilizes the app in new ways, presents new puzzles. It also has remained fairly constant in utilizing the settings well. I'd be fine playing a new Unlock release every other week for the rest of my life.

Unicornus Knights
This game has potential and a really killer concept where a princess is storming towards a castle to enact revenge but you need to help clear the path and guide her. Some of the mechanisms are unique and clever and I thought I would end up really digging it.

What hampered the game and brought it down towards the upper end of average is a core mechanism of escorting armies and needing to manage supply tokens that you spend to move. You have to feed the princess supply and armies and then she will auto move based on simple AI, so much of the game devolves into counting supply tokens and predicting where she will move and trying to strategize around this. Way too much of the time is spent on overhead and recounting spaces as opposed to making interesting tactical decisions. It reminded me of the worst parts of dungeon crawls in this way.

For Sale
I forget how good this game is. I must own this.

On My Mind
Geekway! I have this scheduled thus far:

-John Company!
-Rising Sun/Root/Inis/Eclipse (one of these, this group is undecided yet)!
-UBOOT!

I'm hoping to get some Shadespire in with Raf as I don't get to play it enough.

I'm all twisted up right now because I fully committed to a VFM Geekway auction item with a huge Heroscape lot. I've been bidding on it for a week and then of course two people start bidding heavy in the last few hours. I'm caught in a bidding war on Mother's day and trying to manage this from my phone while navigating the huge VFM Geeklist, and some jabroni gets a bid in at 6:59 (auction said it ended at 7) and there's now a huge cluster on who wins. I bid again at 7 but RAW I guess I lose? It makes no sense since we couldn't enter max bids, no one should have bid ahead of time and we all should have tossed a random high number out at 6:59 and hoped for the best.

Now the auctioneer is trying to decide what to do and said he's contacting geekmods. I probably shouldn't have convinced myself I was getting this a week ago and fallen down the Heroscape rabbit whole because now I'm bummed about probably missing out on it. 1st world problems, yo.

Blues are one of four teams remaining in the playoffs, hence my hockey based entry. This is a baseball town, by far, but it's nice seeing the city abuzz with hockey fandom. A priest at my grandmother's church yesterday said a prayer for the team which was pretty funny, and then I randomly stumbled into a long conversation at the gas station. People here usually don't care about hockey so seeing it being talked about all over is great.

2x Dragon Dice

These were mock battles against myself. But still, I played. I streamed it and I'm glad it's helping people. There are some players new to the game that are watching and sharing the videos to learn both rules and strategy.

I played Lava Elves vs Coral Elves, and then Dwarves vs Undead. I had fun and I played where I simulated 3 kicker packs then constructed an army out of those to play with. The first play I focused on rules and gameplay, so I didn't really do any thoughtful army construction. The second battle I conscientiously picked my armies based on what I pulled.

Super Mario World
In video games, I finally played and beat Super Mario World for the first time. I'd never played more than the first level or two here and there. But with Mario Maker 2 on the horizon, I thought it'd be a good time to learn how SMW mechanics work. I'm really glad I did.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
As I move closer to playing all the unplayed Zelda games, I've been playing this title heavily this past week. And of course my son loves it because I'm driving a train.

Thank you, Mith, for telling me to play Phantom Hourglass first. I would've played these in the wrong order and really regretted it. There are so many quality of life improvements in the controls that I would've hated playing Phantom Hourlgass after this. I'm near the end of the game now, and finally started looking up walkthroughs to get past annoying parts where I overlook a simple control I didn't understand existed. And I've actually learned new controls like I can push the L button to activate my item instead of having to tap it with the stylus every time. Woah! So far, any spoilers I've looked up have been for annoying parts of the game where it wasn't obvious what to do unless I knew exactly what to do. For example, the latest boss fight I have to whack at the guy constantly with my sword until he does a super attack which is his weakness. The super attack is so rare that I didn't think I was doing the right 'trick', which is my only complaint with Zelda bosses. There's a trick to beat the boss and it's the only way to beat the boss. But after I'd watched a guide where they were doing exactly what I was doing, I started attacking slightly differently. And it made me wonder if similar to Wii Zelda games, if I can strike with my sword vertically AND horizontally? I still don't know, but that seemed to make a difference in progressing the battle against this boss.

Once I finish this title, it'll be back to Zelda II, which I'm not looking forward to. It's not a game I would recommend, and if it wasn't Zelda, I would have stopped playing it.

Shards of Infinity

Picked up Shards of Infinity per recommendation of Fearless Leader, and holy macaroni is it addicting. I think the biggest thing that I find with Shards is that - that the sequencing with which you play your cards matters a whole hell of a lot more than in other games. There’s cards that get better when you reach a certain Mastery level, and there’s also cards that get stronger once you meet a certain effect (play/reveal a card of the same type, have a card of the same type in your discard, reveal one of EACH other type). So, the more ways you can trigger the extra effects, the better off you’re playing it seems.

Also, the Hard AI legitimately crushes me. I’m not keeping a hard W/L percentage (because it’d probably make me sad), but I’d say I win about a third of the time against it so far. I noticed that they tend to prioritize cards that let you draw at least one, since they don’t take up any space in your deck, so at minimum I try to prioritize those (the order card that lets you draw two, the elephant that lets you draw one, the +8 monk dude).

Unlock: The Nautilus Traps

This was some bullshit right here.

OMM

I was in Seattle visiting family. I worked remotely, so I was fairly busy through the week, but in the end we were able to spend some good night eating, catching some movies, gaming a little bit. It was an enjoyable one but I did miss my apartment and the life I got going on over here a bit.

KublaCon is next week, and then I’ll be in Asia for 7 days following that! Super excited to get some traveling done again.

On Friday our nephew came over and played some games while Toby was playing ping pong with our sister-in-law and her sister. This was the first time he "played" Click Clack Lumberjack without immediately knocking over the whole stack! He was being delicate in hitting the tree and stopped when a piece fell off! We ignored the 2 hits per turn rule. Speaking of ignoring rules, we also "played" a bunch of other games by ignoring the rules, like Igloo Pop (he just played around with the igloos), KLASK (he liked just putting the puck into the KLASK hole, and then later discovered putting the pucks against each other was really funny), Strike (he just rolled all the dice one by one into the arena), and Poker Chips (counting out different colors of chips and organizing them).

On Saturday played 4p 1867. My first time playing 1867, and I enjoyed it. I was trying to be greedy and run my minors one more OR before merging them, since I thought the 4 trains wouldn't come out yet to rust the 2's, but that stock round a bunch of new minors got floated, so the 4 trains came out at the end. I even tried during the middle of the OR to just buy over my 2 with one of my minors, hoping that the other people with 2-train minors would also stall, but they all shuffled to buy the 3's so I had 3 out of my 4 minors get nationalized. Whoops. That was exciting though. Then I floated a major just to save my last minor (got a permanent in it), and then let the major get nationalized! My last minor lasted as long as it could and I grew it up right before the 8 got bought, so I had good timing on that one and it got me a good amount of money, but not enough to get out of last place.

We also played Fourth Age! I dumped a trainless corp on someone because I could, but when I was doing it I knew that it probably wasn't a good idea because dumping doesn't seem bad in 1870, and I should have kept it to withhold and be a yellow company. Toby ended up having like 30 certificates because of yellow/brown, and we called the game before the end. But I got all my destinations so I was happy. The Dwarf company is pretty good.

On Sunday we streamed Rolling Stock. We also called this one early when Toby got a monster company. I wasn't doing too badly, but the privates I had gotten didn't synergize well (the orange that would have been good for me wasn't in the game), so I got a little unlucky there. But I managed to get a green and a blue and start up a company with them, so I wasn't dead.

On My Mind
- Just published my 18xx musical today! So far it looks like people are enjoying it! I'm happy with how it turned out.

- I've had spring cleaning on my to-do list for a while but haven't really gotten around to it yet. Hoping to do some this week now that I've settled down some.

- One of Toby's cousins has two kids who have outgrown one of their strollers, so they gave it to us! It's a pretty nice double stroller with big wheels and a smooth ride. They also gave us car seat adapter things for chicco car seats, so we can just have the adapters in multiple cars and move the car seats around. We'll just need to buy the car seats. There are three 3-year old boys in the family right now, so we're going to be getting a bunch of hand-me down stuff (oh yeah, we found out they're boys).

- I'm also going to KublaCon this year! I signed up for the math trade for what feels like the first time in forever. A bunch of 18xx games were showing up so we decided to put some of ours in too. We'll see if anything comes of it.

From gallery of Annowme

My sister is getting married this Saturday, which is fantastic. That said, the looming endeavor has sucked up all of our time, given that it's local and we're directly involved. I am a bit more on the fringe (while my wife is a bridesmaid), but I've already had plenty to do to help with logistics, and we've moved our normal weekly stuff from this present week to LAST week in order to make time to help out etc... So, no games.

I was asked to select and read a poem at the wedding. This is great, because I really enjoy poetry (while my sister doesn't, so the request is mildly ironic), but also a bit tough, since I'm making a choice on her behalf for the ceremony. I pored over the writings I've enjoyed in this theme but didn't want to pick anything sappy (yuck), so I went with Christian Rossetti's "I loved you first: but afterwards your love" which has been nice to read over again now and apply to she and her fiancee (who is a swell guy).

In other news, my D&D adventure is currently being processed by DMSguild.com and will formally published online any day now.

 9  Panamax x1 New!

On Panamax : OK, just got this game. Wow! I really think highly of this game.

I love the decision making of the contracts and maximizing your logistics of moving cargo as efficiently as you can with just a few actions (in a 4 players game, you have only 12 actions to spend not counting bonuses of course). So you simply don't have enough actions to do what you want and players are entice to cooperate to a certain point by :
- loading cargos on other player boats
- moving other players boats
- investing in other players companies

I like the differents types of boats and how they are focused :
- company ships : loaded with cargos, they increase companies's fund upon delivery and award to the ship's owner a bonus card depending of its size (size 1: captain card, size 2: stevedore card, size 3: financial advisor card).
- cruise ships : only loaded with 1 and 2 cargos, they increase companies's fund and award players passenger tokens that worth personal money and ongoing bonuses.
- military ships : no cargo could be load in these ships. They give money to the player who move them, money that could be invested in companies by buying shares.

Although the objective of the game is to gain personal wealth as a result of managing your company wisely (each player start with 1 share of his company and must pay fees in place of his company if the company can't afford to), it is also a matter of investing in other players companies (if you buy all the shares of your company, nobody will help you). I was immediately intrigued by the notion that the game gives you an actual company to run with real operations that you have to manage (through the cargo shipping element). This game lets you touch everything, from operating your company to managing it's investments, to raising capital, and finally translating all that into take home pay.

Terrific game.

2019 10x10 solo challenge : i didn't start my Le havre solo challenge yet. I am in the hurry.
