Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- June 2019

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

This Month

Hi and welcome to March!

This months theme is Dexterity style games. I have a number of Dexterity games, Rhino Hero, Flick 'em Up, PitchCar etc, and I'll admit that sometimes they get overlooked. Maybe it's the setup needed or the fact that they don't appear to be as clever as other styles.

So have a look at your collections and dust of those games with physical consequences.

Happy Gaming
TC

1. Board Game: Tales & Games: Jack & the Beanstalk [Average Rating:6.62 Overall Rank:8221]
Board Game: Tales & Games: Jack & the Beanstalk
Urrgghhh - dexterity (my least favourite type of game) and I've just had permission from daughter to throw out loopin louis, bugs in the kitchen, super rhino, ghost blitz etc so now don't really have any left laugh

I'll have to dig around to see what we've got!

So we played this one today which is one dexterity game I've always been happy to play as it's kinda half card game. There is role/action selection card phase which determines who's turn it is and your choices of how many dice you have to build a tower with in the form of a bean stalk. The dice roll determines if the giant sees you, if you have to add a dowel on as well, whether you get to put treasure on the stalk or whether you can roll an extra one and so on. You then collect gold accordingly if you haven't toppled it. Lots if you place everything and manage to put the castle on the top - only happened twice so far as nigh on impossible. You can play with the additional special actions on the card or ignore them if you want a simpler game.

The other good thing about this one is I'm somewhat shakier than my daughter putting me at a huge disadvantage so when it gets too high for me, I will play a card that increases the chances of her going first in which case, I've then just got to hope she fails and knocks it over giving me some gold and an easier turn. Or you can be really mean and attempt to place one in an earlier round half hanging off so their next turn is more likely to fail - she often manages to balance the impossible regardless!

The person with the most gold at the end is the winner. I actually won for once which is not often as it's really really hard to balance a teeny weeny dice on top of 10 or so other teeny dice/dowels/chits that you're not allowed to touch when you have a genetic slight essential tremor when holding arms out.

I suppose I can't complain though as forced my dad to play junk art the other day and he's always had a really really bad essential tremor so it was mortifying to watch and we did so literally through our fingers shake I think he actually beat us mind you and he found a way to drop them on (even tentatively chucked on a couple of times) rather than place so his shaky fingers didn't impact the precariously balanced structure so was an amazing feat to watch in all honesty laugh

8 yr old daughter loves it and has always gotten really excited over tower balancing type games as enjoys it when they fall.

We tried this one at an International Table Top Day event yesterday. It was much harder than I had guessed, both in terms of the actual dexterity (those cars are TINY!) and in terms of the specific rules of how you can add towers and roads. It was fun to try but my daughter (12) said it was not her favorite.

They also had a copy of the giant version of Rhino Hero, but it was very popular and we didn't get a chance to play it.

My daughter also tried the Star Wars BB-8 version of Operation in the ITTD play-to-win section yesterday... and won the drawing, so the game came home with us. She was thrilled!

Another new-to-us play from ITTD. My daughter really enjoyed the artwork and started to get into the press-your-luck aspect: each round, you flip over "level" cards one at a time and resolve them, then decide if you're going to press your luck by staying in the level for another card flip, or if you're going to keep the treasure you already gained this round and hold. If you flip over too many danger cards so that you lose all your hearts for the round, you also lose the treasure you picked up.

It was a nice light family game that my 12 yo enjoyed. We hoped to win it from the play-to-win area but we weren't so lucky!

More from our ITTD adventure. We picked this one because I'd played it once before with a friend, and found it similar to Machi Koro in overall gameplay. Machi has been a big hit here with both the kids, so I thought this would be a good choice.

My 16 yo and partner both loved it as much as I did, but our 12 yo was a little overwhelmed with the strategy of choosing which dice to utilize (if the roll is a 2 and a 3, you can activate the 2, the 3, or the 5 - sum of both dice). She also struggled with trying to get an even engine that could produce a little something on every roll of the dice, so the game was not a huge hit for her. I think if we do pick up a copy, it will take her a few plays to "see" the strategy and really start to enjoy the game... which is definitely something I'm going to encourage, because the rest of us liked it a lot.

This one was totally new to us, and we'd never even heard of it before, but there it sat on the shelf with its diminutive box with a magnetic flap, full of round cards and hefty acrylic tiles. It called to us.

My 12 yo has some visual tracking issues and so it was harder for her to visualize the patterns she was trying to make in the grid of tiles - you can swap or flip two tiles each turn to try to get your colored tiles in a specific pattern to match your card. Even though it was tricky for her, it was a light enough game that she didn't get overly frustrated, and the pieces are definitely a draw for all of us.

7. Board Game: Dead Throne Deluxe Edition [Average Rating:7.02 Overall Rank:12503]
Board Game: Dead Throne Deluxe Edition
So we finally got to test out the risky and expensive game I kickstarted some time ago. It's not a dexterity game as such but the weight of the box being probably 10 times the weight of any other game I've got and required full extension of my kitchen table to fit it all on means there's an element of dexterity just to get it on the table in the first place whistle

This was hopefully going to be the holy grail adventure/exploration game we've been seeking for an eternity - better than hero quest in terms of PvP between all and an evil player that can play in the same way as the heros and stand a chance of winning and better than talisman in regards to a more evolved free exploration with a less repetitive frustrating ending! Better than both in regards to having a little more strategy and not a luck fest dice throwing competition. Not as complicated as some others with a million different icons and rules!

So what do we think? It's hard to say from the first game. I did my normal lazy way of learning to play via watching a video (jongetsgames is so great for this but no playthrough for this game from anyone) and as we started playing, it became very clear this was massively insufficient so a lot of time was spent arguing over the interpretation of the rules and after reverting to the rule book, it also became clear this wasn't quite sufficient enough either laugh We also had dinner during this time which we had to eat off the kitchen sides!

This meant we didn't actually play a huge amount of turns within those few hours of setting it all up, bickering and scratching heads and we couldn't actually finish the game once we realised it was some way past 9pm on a school night shake

After daughter went to bed, I've since read the rule book thoroughly and realised we were playing it mostly completely wrong anyway and missed so many details.

However.......it's still sooooo cool is pretty much all I can say. My daughter sat through those many awkward hours with zero complaint which is very unusual as she was still so excited about it and kept saying this is amazing regardless. We all had a lot of fun during the parts we actually played. The exploration element with the tiles is fantastic and the components are superb and the best thing is that there will be near zero set up time for the next game due to the market being permanently set up in the box lid and everything else where it should be already.

It's not as straight forward as I had expected but I still don't think it will be that complicated once we'v got our heads around the rules. Obviously, I can't really tell what the game will play like until we've had a few proper games and have no idea about the longevity of such a game but everything so far leaves me feeling positive.

Fingers crossed

I suppose only time will tell so I'd better get reading up on BGG and their website to clarify anything still confusing me - I'm not the only one struggling but fortunately, the designer is answering questions pretty promptly!!!

Board Game: Star Wars: X-Wing (Second Edition)
My ten yo asked for this for her birthday and we got a starter game in tonight. Not dexterity, but definitely far afield for what I usually play. We played a very stripped down version, which was a good idea. I am a terrible commander but technically, the game was easy for us to handle.

She took one of my TIE fighters out quickly and had the other on the ropes. I fought back to make things tight, but she managed to land the winning hit.

My daughter loves Star Wars and said she loved feeling like a character in the movies and commanding ships. She wanted to play again immediately but it was a bit late.

I tried to get a game of ICECOOL out of someone. Maybe tomorrow.

We didn't get a dexterity game to the table, but my 6yo and I had a little bit of time on Saturday for gaming.

We played Clank! first, and it was a fantastic game. I had a chance to teleport early, and I used it to go the wrong way down an arrow path to quickly go for a monkey idol and the 15 point artifact and get back out. I made it out quickly, but then the 6yo was able to get a ton of gold and still get out. If she had gotten anything besides the lowest point artifact, she would have won (she would have been able to get the 10 point one, but it was the one that was randomly left out that game). I ended up winning 69 to 68.

Then we played Ticket to Ride. This was only her second time playing, and she beat the score of her first game by almost double (and was excited to win the longest train bonus). However, I was fortunate to get destination cards that paired well together with 3 different routes of 17+ points. She did a better job of using her train cards, but she still had a bunch of trains that she didn't get to place at the end of the game. We will keep practicing.

Board Game: Disc Duelers
Disc flicking combat. Played with the 10 yo and 5 yo with very stripped down rules where we just used movements and attack and no special abilities. The kids were pretty excited through the whole game and I found it fast and fun. The kids like the character art a lot. Both kids say that want to play this more often, so they can thank the geek list for the impetus.

The only dexterity comes from having to flick the dice to knock over the King Pig, but this was a quick little fun filler game. I picked this up a few weeks ago at our thrift store with the intent of taking it for my Sunday School Classroom. Its always better to try out games and KNOW how they are played then try to read the rules and teach a handful of 8-year olds!

Anyway, me and my 8 year old tried this on Saturday. Throw the dice, try to eliminate your cards and flick the dice to knock over the King Pig.

Not the most MUST HAVE game I've ever played, but it will serve my purposes in the classroom.

My 8 and almost 10 year old were desperate to play this game on Saturday. It was stormy and we had just finished an amazing homemade pizza made by the 8 year old -showed her how to proof the yeast and away she went- so I figured why not.

Then we started playing, and I remembered why not. I enjoy this game. ...when I play it with adults. But my kids just haven't quite been able to master thinking ahead to plan their moves. A lot of times, I do so much coaching that I feel like I'm playing three hands myself. I also realize they need the practice.

Anyhoo, the 10 year old gave up and went to bed. She is NOT a night owl. Then my husband came in and took over helping the 8 year old. She won by 3 points. And wanted to play again... but it was bedtime.

Sunday night, husband was working so the 8 and 10 year old chose this game. I was a little hesitant, since last time we played it ended in tears (the 8 year old, not mine!) But I was pleasantly surprised. She handled drawing obsidian well and made some very good choices about when to play cards and get out of the mine. She ended up winning (by A LOT). She had two days where her pie points were over 50. The 10 year old did well too and came in second. I couldn't draw valuable gems to save my life.

I think my girls like the components of this game just as much as the game play. The Snow White theme is perfect for this game. I'm not sure they would be into it if it was any other theme. The gems are chunky, the boards are a nice weight. Perfect for little hands.

Played this with my 6yo last night. He's just getting to the stage where he can actually keep his attention long enough to play a full "proper" game, and he really wanted to play this last night. He started off, though, making up his own rules - he wanted to block all the people in so they couldn't get out of any open entrances to any of the buildings (which is beyond the actual rules of the game, so that was a good sign). Having successfully done this for each colour of people, I taught him the actual rules and we played a game, following the rules properly. He really enjoyed it, AND he managed to win (I had 2 meeple left to place).

Here's hoping he'll be ready for 'real' Carcassonne in a few years...

Board Game: ICECOOL
Played against the 5 yo. I was intently trying to get a handle on trick shots, while he hit some good ones and won 27-24. Then all three kids hung out practicing jump shots and trick shots and quickly became clearly much better than me. And now my 8 yo is setting up some kind of imaginary penguin classroom scenario. It really is a great game for its cuteness and inventiveness.

21. Board Game: Tiny Towns [Average Rating:7.39 Overall Rank:324]
Board Game: Tiny Towns
We ended the night with our first play of Tiny Towns and it did not disappoint. We played a 4p game with myself, my husband, ten yo and 5 yo. It seemed easy enough at first placing cubes and getting buildings up with ease. But golly, once space is scarce and you are at the mercy of everyone else things get tense and puzzly. I would have played again immediately but it was late for everyone else.

Score was 25 (me) - 21 (10 yo). My husband just said “not even close”. Five year old was just having fun. He did well building the buildings, but he can’t really grasp the scoring yet.

22. Board Game: Jenga [Average Rating:5.60 Overall Rank:11407]
Board Game: Jenga
So we did in fact manage to get quite a few dexterity games in this week.

First up was Jenga (or massively cheaper supermarket own brand equivalent) - this was one of her absolute favs from the age of two as loves it when it falls down - giant garden jenga even better. As much as I have a general hate for dexterity, I have always had fun playing this one - something about the suspension of it. Won't be getting rid of this any time soon and was actually nice to remember we had it so thanks for the theme this month.

Board Game: Pictureka!
My daughter has always liked this one and was a good option for when she was teeny (better than candyland) even though I'm not that much of a fan. She won't let me get rid of this one.

Some may not think of it as dexterity but it's whomever points to it first and requires speed so I say it counts and she is much faster than me.

Regardless, it is without doubt hugely more enjoyable than spot it/dobble which I dislike tremendously and find incredibly boring and this one will scratch a similar itch.

24. Board Game: KLASK [Average Rating:7.65 Overall Rank:273]
Board Game: KLASK
Played this at the local games cafe and it was actually really fun.

Kind of trying to score goals against each other with magnetised pieces without attracting little magnetic pieces.

Short and good fun for a dexterity game and willing to play again.

25. Board Game: Brothers [Average Rating:6.41 Overall Rank:8449]
Board Game: Brothers
Simple abstract game that we played as they likened it to things like patchwork but a little more competitive.

One person is playing one type of animal with a specific shape and the other player another shape (wabbits and gobbles I think). You lay out the fields one by one (different layouts will be better for the different shapes) and then once finished, you start taking it in turn to lay out your animal pens trying to place them in such as way that would give you space to put one later and not allow the other players shapes etc. You keep taking turns until you can no longer place any more. You score points based on how many you couldn't place and after two rounds, the lowest score wins.

It was okay and was more head to head than patchwork albeit simpler etc but abstracts aren't generally our favourite type of game. I thought it would be a bit repetitive for her but she said she liked it - didn't ask to buy it.

Either way, after two games (four rounds), she simply was unable to get anywhere near beating me and just not able to compete so that would be a major issue for us anyway. I suppose maybe a kid could learn after playing lots but it's unusual for her to not even get close. I didn't find the decision making hard or compelling either.
