This list is in honor of the U.S. Women's national soccer team's success thus far.

Let's talk about big victories (and defeats). What's the biggest or most glorious victory in a board game that you've ever accomplished? Tell us about it.

Now that we've had the good, let's hear the bad. What's your biggest or most painful defeat?

Let's move to personal stuff. If you're comfortable, share perhaps your biggest success in life, outside of board games.

And here it comes. What was your biggest defeat or failure? Do you have any bits of wisdom that you could turn into advice for the rest of us?

Reviews
Brook City is an OK follow-up to Street Masters. It's not quite as brilliant but it still has its moments. Review at Player Elimination.

Quest for El Dorado
This was alright. I can't think of a Knizia I dislike, but I also wouldn't put this among his best. Deck building is not my favorite so that also doesn't help.

Wings for the Baron
We've now tried the campaign game, which really means the advanced game and not campaign in the traditional sense. Instead of just building single seat bi-planes and tri-planes for Germany, this has you also building two-seater recon and bomber models.

This is such an interesting economic Euro-game with a historical context and chaotic edge. Most of it is simultaneous play and the tech tree isn't really a tech tree so I actually dig it.

We found the campaign game to be more satisfying, although a bit more fiddly, and it opened up some new strategic possibilities, also emphasizing factories into the late game which the standard ruleset did not.

Entire group digs this game and it's a pretty slick little design that offers a full experience in one hour.

Cthulhu Wars
We played on Shaggai and I was Sleeper up against the Ancients, Black Goat, and Windwalker. Black Goat took it as I was a bit slow in getting my spellbooks.

Shaggai rocks. It's kind of like Primeval but more interesting, also reminds me of Ragnarok in Blood Rage a bit. Insect minis basically flag areas that have a strong chance of blowing up in the next round. If they do, the entire map space is gone and everything on it. The tradeoff is that the owner of units there receives 1 power per figure lost, and one elder sign per controlled gate lost. Especially late game I would gladly trade a weakly defended gate for an elder sign. This loss happens after gather power and after doom is awarded, so it's a nice little boost and no cost for this upcoming round.

The map constricts tightly causing more conflict, it also puts you in weird positions because you want to attack player A but their gate has a 50% chance of blowing up next round. There's constantly shuffling and it was very interesting.

Conan
I quit the solo campaign. Still felt a little too bland and it was devoid of the interesting bits that made Conan so dynamic and enjoyable. The AI is too simple and the scenarios, most importantly, lack heart. I was still having some fun but I realized my solo time would be better spent elsewhere so I cut the line.

On My Mind
We're playing Pax Pamir 2e on Wednesday. Really looking forward to that again. May also foist Slide Quest on them or perhaps the Jagged Alliance board game which I just received.

I'm also getting a review copy of Combat Commander: Europe from GMT, a 13 year old game that I've somehow never played. I'm hoping it takes the place of Conflict of Heroes as my preferred tactical squad-based wargame.

Need to Heroscape to the table soon. Still itching to play that after getting such a big haul of it.

I started watching When They See Us and found it very upsetting. Lasted about 30 minutes until they started questioning the kids and trying to Brendan Dassey them, and just had to turn it off.

Had a similar experience with the last episode of The Handmaid's Tale. If you're keeping up with this you'll know what I'm talking about, but the "silence" thing really horrified me. I find myself questioning why I'm still watching this every couple of weeks, but Elisabeth Moss' performance is just so damn good and I'm so invested in the outcome at this point (hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel).

Rocketman was pretty good. I'm not a big musical fan but I dig Elton John's music so it won me over. Apparently I talked about Rocketman last week.

Second week in a row with no games played.

At least physically, after hearing so much about it, I gave the Shards of Infinity app a try. And my first impression is that it's basically an greatly improved version of Star Realms. I like the two methods of winning, making it a race and opening up other forms of strategy. Also, the balance between the cards seems to be a lot better.

What the game brings new to very overcrowded and trite "ascension style" deck builder is the mastery point thing, and how several cards become more powerful the higher you get on that list, eventually getting to the point of out-right winning. It causes the game to scale up as it goes on, and acts as a bit of a timer. Even in the most drawn out defensive game, it still won't last much more than 30 turns.

I definitely enjoy playing the app, but I see no reason why I'd run for the physical copy.

Edit:

--OMM--

Job: While I'm definitely not excited about quitting my job, I am definitely under the case of short timers. I haven't been working as efficiently and dedicated to accomplishing the tasks.

Weekend: Had a great weekend. On Saturday, we took Lillian to a community center pool, where they have this whirlpool and not-so-lazy river. That girl loves thrills, which I'm excited about when she gets older. She's just so fearless. Sunday, we went out to one of the rivers and just chilled out. It was nice getting the family out of the house.

Edit 2:

I keep forgetting things that are on my mind. Irony.

Vacation: We had planned on going to Disneyland for Lillian's 2nd birthday. Plans changed. We then started talking about going there in September, but I have some other concerns for that. We have settled on taking a road trip during that time period, driving down to Sacramento and see my family down there. We'll be there for my grandmother's 90th birthday.

Qwinto/Love Letter - Meh

Healthy Heart Hospital - I think the game is interesting but also trying to get over the solo mode essentially being have to run 5 characters. Overall I scored in the highest bracket 100+ so a part of me feels there isn’t much to explore in the game. I just feel weird when I don’t spectacularly fail my first time in a cooperative game.
External image

Brew Crafters
- Added some of the non basic skilled workers. 4 players, 2 which were new. Good stuff, I went all in on hop infusers and tons of employees which lets you dump extra hops into beers for extra points. My employees let me get free resources so a normal 2 goods would give me an extra 3 things. Solid. Did well enough to eke out a win by 1 point. The other experienced played did really well in going all in on cranking out enough beer to get 2 shift workers in the first season, unfortunately wasn’t able to translate that into enough points. One newbie went for getting most of the first of everything to get lots of points for that ending up in second. The other newb did well by brewing one of the most difficult beers just multiple times in the game. Unfortunately they were fairly tight on resources since they didn’t have storage. Great game overall.
External image

Spirit Island
- Lvl 4 prussia I was selfish and chose nightmare which had a horrible time keeping anything in check so I took like 6 blight in one turn from cascading and the blight card triggered forcing me to lose 3 presence on top of the bits removed from cascading my entire presence was wiped off the map and we lost.
Play #2 was still lvl 4 prussia. I chose rampant green and held it down fairly well but our cards draws were all the lands I was spending presence to block them and so they kept building up and I wasn’t able to attack back. Fortunately everybody else was doing fine and eventually we got some nice synergies and won on the final turn before the game ended.
External image

Magic Maze - quick smooth filler but also discovered you can somewhat easily drop in players who already know how to play. We were in the middle of the game when my other friend showed up I pulled out the tile for him and just threw him in. Solid.
External image

Medici
- Taught this to my buds. Played twice back to back because I beat my friend by 6 points and he said “Now that we know how to play we should do it again for real”. I then managed to beat him a second time. He overbid 2 things that I think screwed him over, once to take goods that were very low in value and put him in last for boat scoring but secured him for 1st in a good no one was really competing with him on, the second bidding 12 on two cards to deny them from me but I didn’t actually want them. I also got lucky on pull when everyone only had 1 slot left and I had 2. I was able to pull out two 5s in goods I needed for majority so swooped that up for 1 florin.
External image

In the Year of the Dragon
- I did it y’all. I played this game 10 times in one month. Good solid plays, one had the lantern festival which makes you score people halfway through the game which made people very important in the game and we actually all scored fairly well, the person who won had 111 which is the highest score I have recorded. Game two was with my buds, my pals, my broskis they enjoyed the game. I won but I should have won by a lot more because they did a horrible job of taking things they needed and not blocking my other friend and letting him get things for free.
External image

Other - Will probably not be a fairly game heavy week or responding much. Lots of work and then going to San Diego for family 4th of July stuff.

I bit the bullet and went out to Target to acquire Pandemic: Rapid Response as I'm a fan of the Pandemic universe in general and Kane Klenko's games specifically. Turns out it's actually pretty solid! I was a little worried to see something so busy with Klenko's usual "limited re-rolls"-style of design against a variable-length timer, but the flow of the game is quite good. The Zombie 15'-style design of having players take turns rather than acting simultaneously helps amp up the tension and makes for some interesting logistical choices, and there's just enough pressure between making supplies/recycling waste/moving the plane/dropping the cargo that it feels challenging without being impossible. Once we got into the groove it didn't feel that difficult, and despite feeling really desperate we finished the easy game with plenty of time to spare. I'll be intrigued to introduce this to other gamers and am happy that there's both adjustable difficulty and a challenge mode, we'll see how many plays this one lasts.

Finally broke out my copy of Cthulhu Wars: Dreamlands Map Expansion and went whole hog with both the Cthulhu Wars: The Dreamlands Surface Monster Pack and Cthulhu Wars: The Dreamlands Underworld Monster Pack. I wasn't the biggest fan of this one: I liked the idea of the Zoogs and Bhole in theory (i.e., randomizers that hinder/blow up gates), but in practice it just felt like they dragged the game out. We also played at 3p which didn't help, and had a map-specific game over when the player who started in the underworld got lucky with the dice rolls for the Bhole and dropped their fourth gate on the fourth citadel.

I don't know that I'm fully on-board with neutral monsters to begin with, and adding in not one but two sets of them very much amped up the busy-ness of the game. I bought the Shantaks to fly some cultists about when I got screwed with Zoog placement in the later rounds, but on the whole they just seemed distracting. I also share Charlie's complaint that it's hard to see the tunnel letters that connect the two boards together when the board gets crowded. In all, I wasn't very impressed with this map.

Quick Hits

- Still rad: Dead Man's Chest. I need to be better in explaining how rounds work, this is 2 for 2 that I've had a confused newb mess up bidding, so I think I'm going to need to work on my rules patter.

- We played Sol: Last Days of a Star with 3p which made the game much more interesting. We also played with a corrected rule that I had missed the first time: that converting sundivers into stations/gates sends them back to a players reserve, not to their hangar. This made Sundiver foundries a whole lot more important, and the game felt a lot more tense. I still really like this design and am going to push for it in the near future.

- Had another bad game of Android: Netrunner – Terminal Directive. I drew almost enough ICE but got agenda flooded, which pretty much doomed me as I was playing against Criminal. My opponent used Spearfishing to jump into one of my remotes to get the first agenda, then went after HQ after I double ICEd the remote to keep it safe. He managed to 1-in-5 the final agenda FTW after Inside Job-ing HQ a third time after I ICEd it, which was crazy. Of more interest was that he had gained two hazard triggers from the last pack and managed to trip BOTH of them during the game, and we got to see the awful, awful stuff that he was required to add in to his deck for the next few games. Out of curiosity, I deliberately tripped one of my hazards just to see what I would get, and it was naturally not a whole lot of fun stuff for me. I'll be interested to see how the next game goes.

 8.0   Shards of Infinity x20 (47 all-time)
 8.0   The 7th Continent x3 (18 all-time)
 10.   Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War x2 (130 all-time)

Shards is still a lot of fun. We've had some crazy endings of all varieties - I feel like I come up 1 short on damage every other game. We had one game where we both hit 30 mastery (I was stuck there for two turns not drawing the Infinity Shard, he had a crazy turn to get there and win), and a couple others with one of us hitting 30 but losing on damage. I've had a good run recently, and I'm still not quite caught up after the run Robin had previously.

Race... I got to blow things up with the Death Star, that's always fun. The past couple games I've just had the craziest draws/synergy, first with Aliens (both 9 worlds, with pay for military and some discounts) and then with Uplift (both +1 military per genes out in the first turns) for a 15ish point NGO.

7th Continent, Sessions 3 and 4:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Well, it all fell apart for me. After realizing I needed to go back to the starting island for the altar, I ran into terrible luck with the exploration cards - a Dead End, among other checks I had little chance of succeeding at. I wasted some cards going back to the camp to try to get some more Advanced Skills, and by the time I got to the fishing spot I only had two cards needing to draw (at least) three, and naturally drew a curse from the discard for that third card. I wouldn't have gotten any food out of it anyway, as bloody as I was.

Rather than changing over to easy mode, I decided to just start over for session 4. Knowing what I needed to be doing actually hurt in some ways - in order to get the gun, you need a music card, so I messed around waiting for the Panpipes and eventually went to camp to try to find something else to use instead. My deck was low again when I got back to the fishing, and I only got 8 back out of it. So I ended up with the Dark Chest opened and a very low deck. Tried to raft my way back and failed miserably, so now I'm on tutorial island with three cards in my deck or something silly like that. Will probably just start over again and do Prodigy mode for a little help.

I do have a decent idea what I need to do after opening the box, based on our original playthrough. So maybe if I can get set up better first I'll have a chance to make some actual progress.

On My Mind In The Mail

I got an offer on my SWCCG cards, so I decided to sell them. A little bit nostalgic about them, but they were never ever getting played, and someday if I decide to pick it up again I do still have "intro" collection (kept some white border cards and commons to get shipping down for buyer), and ebay is a thing.

Money from that is already gone because Aerial washed her phone. Oops.

Just One 5 NEW!
Wordy Word 2 NEW!
Nusfjord (9 all-time) + Nusfjord: Plaice Deck NEW!
Ulm NEW!

---

Just One: Played 5-player with my family. It's great.

Wordy Words (a.k.a. Tic Talk): Kind of a weird real-time clue-giving word game. In phase 1, you roll some dice with letters, then have to quickly fill in the colored spaces correcting to the die/letter (see card below).

Board Game: Tic Talk

In phase 2, you pass the board to the other team and they have to guess the words you wrote. There is a lot of room for using random, large, and/or esoteric words, which is either hilarious or frustrating depending on where your knowledge base falls. My brother and I crushed my parents because this kind of game is 100% in our wheelhouse.

Nusfjord: Plaice Deck: The highlight of this expansion is the metal coins that replace the garbage microscopic ones in the base game. New buildings were cool too. I won, but had to rejoice in my shared victory because apparently there is no tiebreaker. What the hell, Uwe?

Ulm: It was a game. Nothing standout here other than maybe the action mechanic. I will likely forget everything about this game in a week.

---

On My Mind:

Summer session finished up. It was a crazy fast four weeks. I'm finishing grading this week.

We watched Shazam! and were underwhelmed. I didn't have any specific expectations, but it just didn't really do anything for me. It almost felt too juvenile. I know that's kind of what it was going for, but I don't know. It just didn't work for me.

Despite my semi-freeze on buying games, it's been a rough Kickstarter/preorder few weeks. I've backed Stockpile: Illicit Investments, Thunderstone Quest: New Horizons, Roll Player: Fiends & Familiars, and am getting ready for Pret-a-Porter on the 8th. I also preordered Empires of the North because clearly I'm still a sucker for Portal Games.

I'm at 37 weeks and officially in the go-zone.

Currently in Orlando, went to Disney World Saturday through Monday and had lots of fun! I got to meet Anna, Elsa, and Olaf when I was wearing my Olaf hat/shirt and they loved it. I also beat Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom! But I didn’t get the extra pack prize since I didn’t want to go all the way back to Main Street at that time. I’ll put pictures up on Facebook next week probably.

During the week we had an online friend over on Wednesday/Thursday and played 1825 with him. We played with all the units and everything, but only played a partial game. It was fun, but the production of the game makes it so hard to play! All the units were produced with different printings so the colors didn’t match, and then the tokens were unlabeled tiddlywinks that shared colors with other corporations. But it was fun. All the trains except 2’s and 3’s are permanent, and the train limit becomes infinity!

I also played some two player games with him on Thursday. Hadn’t played Patchwork in two years, but I still like it! And Ravens is always fun, but hard to teach.

On My Mind
- going to Dice Tower Con today! The convention starts tomorrow but we’re checking into the hotel this afternoon. Yay!

- I’ll probably update on Disney and DTC next week since I’m not gonna be online much this week (and I’m currently typing from my phone, which I hate).

- It is hot here. So far I think I haven’t gotten sunburnt since I was good with sunscreen. But the bottoms of my feet hurt from walking. I wasn’t very good at taking breaks at Disney and ended up walking 8-10 miles each day. Whoops. It was a lot of fun though! Luckily I’ll walk a lot less at the convention.

Last year I won a 2 night stay at http://www.bidwellhouse.com/ at a fundraiser auction for the school my youngest sister's kids go to. My sister won the same item this year, so we left our kids with my mom and all went up there for the weekend (took Friday off work). It was a 4-5 hour drive and we stopped at the Sierra Nevada tap room in Chico for lunch. Food was pretty good (good enough that Hilary and I stopped again for lunch on the way back Sunday) - the fries were particularly great - they described them as "fermented", though I'm not really sure what that means in a fry context.

The place we stayed is in the Mount Lassen area - about 4500 feet. The weather was just about perfect. We did some nature walking (though not much - Hilary has been having some hip/foot issues) and ate/window shopped around town. It was pretty great/relaxing. And in the evenings we played some games.

No Thanks!
I saw a couple about our age playing Phase 10 in the early evening just after dinner. I told them I was bringing out some games and invited them to join us. I taught No Thanks and we played a few rounds of that.

Kakerlakenpoker Royal
Then my sister and her husband joined us as I was getting ready to teach Cockroach poker. We ended up just chatting and drinking for about 45 minutes, after which my sister's husband and the woman we met (Charlotte) both decided to turn in, but we played a round of Cockroach Poker Royal. My sister continues to be confused by the "wild" card in that game for some reason ("if it can be anything, can't it also *not* be anything?"). I have to say after just a couple games of this I've become *much* better at lying to my wife. #LifeSkills.

Azul
On Saturday night we went to a little brewery (http://www.waganupa.com/, but that's, umm, not much of a website). There was a pizza place across the street and they encouraged outside food, so we ate pizza, drank beer, and played Azul. Then we went back to the B&B and played one more round of Azul. I won both (even after a pretty terrible start in game 2). I never really feel like I'm doing anything terrifically clever in this game, but I guess there's something to avoiding obvious mistakes.

Gaia Project
Rewinding to the previous Tuesday, I'd played Gaia project with my friend Heather a couple weeks back and she said she wanted to play it again before it totally exited her head, so we played another 3-person game with my friend Mikhail. What was interesting for me this game is how much I screwed myself with my initial placement. Like constantly for the first 2-3 rounds I could really see how much better the game would have gone if I'd made a different opening placement - I was not able to 'leech' power until like round 3. I did right the ship enough to make a strong second place, but Mikhail was way to far ahead. Heather decided she liked the game and felt like she knew much better what she was doing and "maybe next time I'll figure out how to translate that knowledge into points".

Poo: The Card Game
Alistair played this at camp and has been bugging us for it constantly. It arrived while we were out of town, and when we got home with him Sunday night he demanded to play it immediately. It's a pretty standard take-that game, but that's right up an almost-7-year-old's alley I guess. It is at least pretty quick (provided we keep him on task - we've taken to setting a 20 minute timer and saying that if they game isn't over by then whoever has the least poop just wins).

OMM
Hilary has gotten way into hot sauces lately and now she's got me on it too. I've never been really into spicy food, but I have to say that I've really been enjoying them. We've also been watching a bunch of Hot Ones on YouTube, which I recommend.

We've been ordering a bunch of stuff off of Amazon as well as https://heatonist.com/collections/all. Favorites so far include https://heatonist.com/collections/mild-hot-sauces/products/a... and https://heatonist.com/collections/medium-hot-sauces/products...

We're also planning to hit up the hot sauce store at Fisherman's Wharf this weekend.

New to Me:

Qwinto -- I didn't think this was all that interesting.

Brittania map for Hansa Teutonica -- Ended up in last place, lmao. I didn't really focus well on a particular strategy, kind of just doing something here and there. Also, I was the unfortunate fifth person out from getting a merchant at the Coellen Table (or whatever the analogue is for the Brittania map), which is a huge swing. Didn't realize how vicious that spot could get!

Still just as good:

We played a game of Voyages of Marco Polo while out camping, at Henry Coe. Notable in that I played Kubilai Khan, where you start out in Beijing. I don't think his power is super strong, and his usage really depends on how good the city actions are at Sumatra. They were bad, and yet I chose Kubilai anyway, so I swapped up my plan mid game and ended up doing well, turning him into a traveler character.

Afterward, I was able to introduce Impact (Strike) and Welcome To. Both received very well!

We had a situation in our office building, so a lot of my direct team members are either WFH or working from cafes for the time being. We may be displaced for a longer while.
