I was lucky enough to get a recent exposure to this game a few months ago at a local retro game convention. I never played it as a kid but really enjoy how much control the game gives you over Simon Belmont, especially in regards to how you can flail the whip around wildly in any direction you want. I haven't beaten it just yet but I am now on the final stage, so it won't be very long before I've beaten it.

Only the final dungeon to go - party is in the level 43-46 range, looking good. I'd like Rydia to learn Nuke but I'm not sure how far off that is, and I'm almost certainly in form to defeat the final boss already.

One of my favorite things about this game is that exposes "grinding" as the player-neurosis that it is, rather than a presumptive, built-in requirement. Sure, a very small percentage of RPGs ('j' or otherwise) can be over-bearing about their level progression.

The truth? Grinding is the equivalent of over-stocking your fridge with food that goes bad. We've all met people like that in real life (my mother-in-law, who grew up relatively poor with an alcoholic father, is like that - wonderful woman). Having the tangible, visible surplus is psychologically powerful enough that the "waste" doesn't register.

At the mechanical level, FFIV seems designed to say, 'hey, if you want to push it, then push it.' There's a sort of self-balancing challenge to it, and it's also probably the jRPG with the best-implemented "run from battle" mechanic. In many others, it's an after-thought.

Anyway, this has been quite a ride. I'm probably going to finish (including all optional content) at around the 16 hour mark, but there's so much packed into that timeframe.

One thing that brought a smile to my face: there's this ridiculous scene near the end where the men of the cast think they should face the final challenge alone, without putting the women in danger. It is so jarring that even as a 10 year-old, my friends and I made fun of it. You guys think you will last 5 minutes without Rydia and Rosa?

Bruv.

I got King's Quest: The Complete Collection about two years ago from a Humble Bundle. I played through the first three episodes so far and I'm enjoying it enough to push through and complete it. Not too bad given that I gave up on any longer game in the last months and spent most of my gaming time with Pinball FX3.

The puzzles are not too difficult and logical. A few times, I resorted to a walkthrough to avoid frustration. In one case, I probably would have needed long to figure out what to do. Episode 3 was the best so far with episode 1 a close second. Episode 2 is the odd one out as it features a quirky management component where you have to keep your fellow prisoners fed or otherwise they starve and can't help you anymore. Beside story achievements, many secret achievements can be collected although most of those won't be figured out without a walkthrough which I only use when I get stuck. The story is humorous and has many nods to the old series which are lost on me as I haven't played King's Quest back then. I started the first original game a year ago but quickly abandoned it. These games have aged badly.

I also played King of Dragon Pass for a few hours but gave up on it. The good ratings here on BGG got my hopes up high and I like choose-your-own-adventure games. But KODP disappointed and frustrated me. I abandoned both started playthroughs when I failed to make real progress and gameplay devolved into an annoying tug-of-war. For every step forward I made another step back and didn't come closer to the goal. Not sure if I ever will give it another try.

I'm taking a break from playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses to focus on knocking out the last three games from my hardcore list. This is one of the shorter titles on my list this year, and I'm looking forward to playing it. I'm currently in between projects at work, so I'm stuck at the office not doing a whole lot. Now seems like a good time to make some progress in a hardcore list game and show some love to my 2DS XL.

Tomorrow begins week 9 of the street stock series, and we're headed back to Charlotte. The last time I raced there was a wash since it's so easy to be taken out by an inexperienced driver. I've steadily maintained my place in the top 10 in points, however, so I'm focused on scoring as many points this week as I can. There's one month left in the season, then I'm graduating to the K&N series. I've been practicing at some tracks in that car just to get familiar with how it drives. I'm planning to run a one-off race in the current season to see how I do and gauge how I stack up against the competition.

Making some progress, but losing progress as well. The limited save system is really stupid.

Wasted an hour, beat some bandits that teleported around me and knocked me off my horse, still completed the tough mission, attacked by more bandits that surround you quicker than sight, but since you can't heal and cannot save.... lost all that progress.

At the sight of having to redo an hour long mission, decided to turn off the game and sulk. This shit gets old quick.

I've had about 10 hours of fun, but lost about 7 hours of my life in lost progress from bugs and not being able to save. That ratio, I'm considering quitting this. There's other more fulfilling things I can be doing rather than redoing missions that I already completed.

I've been trying to finish/play through RDR, in anticipation of playing RDR 2. Hadn't been playing a lot of video games lately - I got sucked into binge watching Stranger Things, and then trying to make my way through Breaking Bad again.

But I played a half dozen missions the other day.

I'm in Mexico.... and I frankly hated Mexico. Too long round about ways they force you to go because of the design of canyons, arroyos, and plateaus. Just seemed... purposefully designed to annoy me.

My one game of choice these days. Every time I sit down to play a game, I glance at my GOG Galaxy library and think about my Steam library (it takes a few seconds longer to get to, so I usually don't bother), and then I shrug and load AoW3. I wonder why I have a couple hundred games when I only want to play one.

I've been sticking to playing as humans, mainly because I like their cavalry and naval bonuses. But this time around I'm playing as a warlord. I usually choose the sorcerer class so I can zap the enemy with chain lightning and rule the late-game battlefield with eldritch horrors and the chaos rift spell. But for a change of pace I'm going for a focus on might rather than magic.

I'm doing OK so far, I think. My scouts have covered a lot of ground in a hurry, and I've met both my rivals. So far we're still at peace. I made a tactical mistake and lost a hero--sent him too far forward when he was still too weak to survive. But I got a replacement hero and more besides, and several independent cities have joined me as vassals. It also looks like the subterranean level is all mine for now. My throne city is already building knights (though I got a free arena there, so maybe I should build some infantry instead). Oh, and somehow I became "prime good" and got a few free units for that.

Yoshi's Island on the SNES Classic, first time playing.

To be honest, I'm not too invested in this game, but it seems I'm committed to giving it a fair shot at least. I beat the first world/stage/set of levels without too much trouble and am halfway through the second. So far I like it, but don't love it.

Controls:
I find it weird that Yoshi has no 'dash'. I move forward, then I try to dash and move forward and it's the same speed! Also I managed to 'double jump' once, but not sure how I did it, and couldn't recreate it. Weird!

Gameplay:
Pretty standard move and jump platform. Throwing the eggs around is pretty fun, and there are different colors of eggs, which I think indicate how many times the eggs can bounce off walls and other objects? Not sure.

Each level you can collect 'stars/energy', flowers, and red coins. The more you get, the higher your score for that level. This type of intra-level gaming is pretty popular now, but I'd hazard a guess that it was pretty innovative at the time?

So far the levels have been a good mix of fun but not too challenging...it's still pretty early in the game, so I'm thinking it might get harder.

Other Stuff:
The music is good, the graphics are kind of like boston terriers, you'll either love the look or you won't. The most annoying thing about the game is the completely over-the-top obnoxious cry that Baby Mario makes when he becomes disconnected from Yoshi.

Which brings me to another point: Why is Baby Mario in this game at all? For plot? Yes, if you get hit, you have to recover Mario, it's such a minor inconvenience. I care more about stopping that crying sound than I do about rescuing Mario haha. Anyway, I don't think the game would lose much of anything if it were just Yoshi being badass slinging eggs. Right?

So, um, 160 hours played. Still playing. Figure I’ve got at least another 20 hours before I feel done.

I’m trying really hard to stick to my goals of main story, uncovering entire map, killing all cultist leaders and getting all sync points. A bit of mission creep because I want to track down all the tombs now. Which means either I look up a map online or I just explore every location on the obscenely large map. I’m going the exploration route. While I’m at it I’m finding more quests to do. So I do those. And those quests lead to other quests.
Sigh.
Good game. But hot in the heels of playing Forza Horizon 4 for several hundred hours it seems like I traded one gaming compulsion for another.

I installed and tried out this game recently, not for the main game, but for the educational "Discovery mode", which I found to actually be quite cool. You can freely roam the entire game world, fast travel, call an eagle to control or horse to ride at will, and there are optional little tours all over with historical art or images and narration.

This game has become one of my daughter's (age 5) favorite videogames. She likes to ride around on a horse, and sometimes walk or swim or fly the eagle, or jump off of high places, but mostly ride a horse. Discovery mode is great for this because you can roam the whole world and nobody attacks you and you can't die. Here's a screenshot of her riding along with some other horseback riders she found:

Her other favorite game is LEGO Jurassic World, mostly to pretend play as a dinosaur in the sandbox/hub areas.

I played this a bit and completed some of the new content:

-The current elusive target in Colorado. The contract requires him to be killed in a non-explosive "accident". He was hanging out upstairs in the farmhouse, so I knocked out everybody up there one by one except for the target, who I pushed off the front balcony for a Silent Assassin rating.

-The new bonus mission set in Columbia. This bonus mission is focused pretty much entirely in the jungle wilderness area of the map, and the target is some big game hunter guy. Getting around in your suit isn't too hard because there is thick foliage to hide in everywhere, but Silent Assassin Suit Only was tricky because his bodyguards are hard to get away from him. Even putting guns on the ground, he'll call for other guards to come get them instead of his bodyguards. Sneaking into the Shaman's Hut was a pain to do in my suit, too. Eventually I did get all the challenges for this mission (except the Master difficulty ones).

-The new bonus mission set in Mumbai. This one was a lot easier to complete SASO and Sniper Assassin for. It isn't too hard to get SASO and Snper at the same time by sniping him from the skywalk while he is on the balcony outside his apartment.

-The new Siberian prison sniper challenge level. I think this is the most fun Sniper Challenge level so far. There are a lot of environmental props you can interact with by shooting them, and you can disrupt the prison in a variety of ways by causing a prison riot, or causing the front gates to open, or setting buildings on fire. This is the first Sniper challenge map to offer a nice reward for the normal maps, too. It's tempting to try to get it, but I've read that it's a bit grindy and time-consuming to get, so I probably won't.

Totally surprised that this game doesn't have more going for it. Played again and did better than before now that I've gotten somewhat of the hang of it. Got all the way to the fifth planet before losing my last continue on it's final boss. I made sure to get images of the bosses too for the game page as there was NOTHING there for them. Classic game that nobody jumped on for this already? Blows my mind.

While on the subject of our geek challenges, I completed this game too. I'll pontificate on that in greater detail in the "Beaten" geeklist. Characters for this are now attached with images uploaded so this will be totally in the bag for the year. My middle name is now "efficiency".

It may not be necessary to grind for me to get through the last dungeon, but I do want to be strong enough to get Bahamut, so I'm back at it.

Fortunately now my party is no longer at a point where they get squashed by wandering mobs in the overworld.

Dove into this one yesterday evening, although I spent an hour pondering Shepard's origin and military background, agonizing over whether to go Femshep, and re-convincing myself that the class system here is pretty busted (Soldier it is, then!). I had to re-load an old save file and stare at endgame skill-trees for a couple of minutes to remember how this all works. Role-playing-wise, I'd love to run Shepard as an Infiltrator or even an Engineer, but in the end you can only lose options/abilities by not picking soldier. Maybe I'll class change at the start of ME2...

I decided to Femshep, Spacer + War Hero. In the past I've done Earthborn + Sole Survivor, as well as Colonist + Ruthless. Both of those pairings make the most sense to me. I figured I'd shake things up in terms of role-playing. Spacer + War Hero is interesting, because you get a Commander Shepard who struggles to have an identity outside of the one that was pre-made for her from her earliest moments.

Completed the prologue on Eden Prime. Been long enough that I'm taking my time, talking to everyone, advancing slowly to spot any stray salvage. Saved my game right before telling Joker to bring us into dock at the Citadel. The Eden Prime mission has always been one of the rougher patches in this game - there's some good set-up for the story in the first hour here, but the actual mission, and especially the last bit at the tram station, falls under 'let's get this over with and get into the game for real.'

PS3 Mass Effect 1 continues to be about as jank as they come - watching the game freeze up for 10 seconds to autosave is almost a bit of comedy. We are years overdue for a remastered trilogy disc, and I suspect one of the reasons we don't have one is how much of a mess the coding is for ME1. While I'm not an expert, I'm betting that a relatively simple remaster of ME1 would take more time & money than both sequels combined.

But, we don't have it, we don't have news that we're going to have it, and the industry at large has run far far away from every good thing in this trilogy.

More werewolves.

Maybe the thing that annoys me most about this game is that it won't give you time to loot after killing certain enemies/reaching checkpoints. I had to reload after killing the leader with my psion because I didn't reach 3 of the treasures in time (and redo a few rounds of combat plus draw it out for several more rounds).

Video Game: Trine 2
Been (re)playing this off and on over the past few weeks. Tonight was Chapter 11 - Eldritch Passages, which took me forever. Is it just me or is this game a lot harder than Trine 1?

Maybe it's that you don't seem to be able to "wizard aka conjure boxes" your way through most of the obstacles in this one, you actually have to be semi-decent at patforming/timing stuff - ie. jumps, avoiding things, but also switching characters at the right moment to coordinate their different abilities. Not one of my better skills really. When I replayed Trine 1 recently, the only level I found particularly difficult was the final one (well, and the bonus level too).

Hmm... Perhaps I should quit while I'm ahead? The couple of chapters remaining are probably going to be even harder, aren't they? Eh... it's still fun. (For now, at least. It's possible that tomorrow I'll be tearing my hair out.)

After beating Jake Hunter, I've got 2 games left to complete my hardcore list. This is another visual novel/horror game that can be finished pretty quickly, so I've decided to start it tonight.

Still on Witcher 3 - and now with a popup that I can do the expansion quests.

I'm at level 17, but haven't left Novigrad left; doing the last bit of quests there, and might go back to do some questing in the old areas, mainly Velan as Roche want me to help out with Ves... While I'm there I can clean, do the last quests.

Now I did have further talks with Kiera as suggested and.... she used me! So I killed her.
Then I meet with Whoreson Junior - and he was really a whoreson - so I killed him...
And the leader of the Witch Hunters... well... it was self defence!

I did completed all the boxing in Velan and Novigrad even if it was too high level according to the skull on the quest log, and I've also completed all Gwent quests in Novigrad - apart from the High Stake Tournament; my deck was not approved. So maybe I can get some better cards in Skellige where I might go soon. I also got a few cards at the estate between Novigrad and Oxenfurt but I don't think it will be enough for joining the tournament.

Once I've helped my lovely Triss I'm off to find a ship!

Continuing through Demon's Souls. Vanguard, Adjucator, and Old Hero down. While most of the boss design in Demon's Souls has been lackluster at best, Old Hero is absolutely incredible (he's also the best case I've seen yet for Demon's and Dark being the same universe; there's some Dark Souls 2 implications with this guy), one of the boss highlights of the series. Which is fortunate, given that 4-2 is an absolute shitfest otherwise. The game's engine simply is not good enough to handle fighting in those kinds of environments with any degree of reliability. And what in the blue hell exactly is going on with Adjudicator?!?! He licks you through the floor, and then you jump at him and hit a blade in his knee, which makes birds appear that you then kill? What the hell?

Not sure where I want to go next. 5-1 sucks (I don't know who I hate more, flame-spear dudes or rats), but my other choices put me on a collision path with Flamelurker or Maneaters.

BOSS RANKINGS (as always, by quality of design, not difficulty):
1. Old Hero
2. Phalanx
3. Vanguard
4. Armor Spider
5. Tower Knight
6. Adjudicator
7. Fool's Idol

Treasure battles, treasure battles, treasure battles. I went through a few matches with Lee, Steve, Dragunov, Asuka, Julia, Negan, and Marduk.

By "a few," I mean probably about 30. I still haven't picked out a character to focus on to learn all their moves, but I did go through a few combos.
