Introduction:

This past weekend I was at a wedding. It was pretty fun. Also I like to cry and one of the best triggers for crying is other people crying, it's similar to vomiting in that way. Of course it's nice when they're happy tears, because you know, it's nice when your friends are happy and not sad. ANYWAY, this list is actually about music. One of my duties was to put together a playlist for an hour of time in the evening after the wedding, I imagined before people really started dancing. But I imagined incorrectly and the playlist wasn't really appropriate to the moment, which is frankly neither here nor there either, and I'm on another mini-tangent. Regardless, it got me thinking about music and weddings and what sort of expectations different people had for what might be the perfect wedding music and why.

When you think of music for a wedding, what do you expect? Live music? A DJ? Something else?

If you're the type to go for a live band, what sort of music do you want to hear?

Original music? Covers? Any special songs?

Maybe you want the wedding to be more like the club. Any special requests you always find yourself making?

This thing provided a nice little cool down activity after the rehearsal dinner but before bed on Friday. Just A and I. She consistently seems capable of outplaying me.

I think my record against the app’s AI is too good at this point. I like, but don’t love this game. Dunno, it somehow doesn’t feel that interactive. Still, seems a marked improvement over that space themed version…

Board Game: BattleCON: War of Indines
N/A   BattleCON: War of Indines NEW!
OK! So, I’m not sure that BattleCON is 100% for me, at least if I can’t pick up that $25 set and have it feel worth it. But a set of Exceed season 3 is on the way. I feel like I’m sniffing around something that I’ll be able to really get into. Also, I’m pretty sure that I prefer BC to something like Ascension. It feels more thinky and also compellingly more directly competitive. I’m looking forward to comparing and contrasting, but mostly just playing Chun-Li vs Vega.

In other news I just got the Oink version of Modern Art, because it's too small to count as a new game. WHY CANT I STOP?

A box arrived yesterday, and Sam said he had picked up a couple of games cheaply. One was The River, a 45 min game that reminds me a bit of Stone Age. Largely I think it reminds me of Stone Age is because of how they did the scaling, where, with 2p, only one person can go to each type of resource each round.

Each player gets a starting board with some printed storage spaces and resource production, and throughout the game, you can add tiles, in order along the river. However, you have to pay attention to timing, because at certain spots, you'll lose a worker (and thus an action) for future rounds. After you build your second card, you get a new worker.

We played three times yesterday, and I won all three. Sam won the first game of today, and I won the second one. It was like the issue I was having with The Palaces of Carrara, but reversed; Sam had a lovely plan that was too long for the time he had. I sprinted for the finish line before he was ready.

Speaking of The Palaces of Carrara, we played that yesterday as well, and I think I won. One of the end-game scoring bonuses was to score the highest and lowest cities, so I really focused on building large tiles on the 3VP city.

The other game in the box was My Village (haven't opened it yet).

3  5-Minute Dungeon (2 all-time)
3  BANG! (32 all-time)
3  Mottainai (6 all-time)
3  Pandemic (20 all-time)

The Good
Got in a few Crokinole plays with my boys. I’m not sure if they prefer this or JamSumo. I’m also going through Alexander the Great’s campaign* in Ancients; so far he is 12-2 in the medal count. There’s something quite soothing about soloing the campaigns in this system. I think I’ll do Hannibal and the Punic War next.

The Bad
Friday night. You see all those 3s up there? That was 7-11pm Friday night. The company was pleasant but the games, well they were lacking a bit. At one point I was given the choice between Mottainai, Citadels, and Bohnanza. You know it’s bad when I pick a Chudyk.

The Ugly
My playing in the aforementioned Mottainai. Just pitiful. I ended with half the points of the winner and only one more than the newbie. I’m such a side sight at a Chudyk table.

*Playing this in the background during the battles.

Board Game: Finished!
Board Game: Tricks and the Phantom

 8   Finished! x2 (68 all-time)
8   Tricks and the Phantom x3 NEW!

So, I like Oink games. Some more than others, but this is one I like: Tricks and the Phantom is (primarily) a special card-power social deduction game with (secondarily) a "suit-up" trick-taking framework. Think Love Letter meets Scharfe Schotten. The result is (as is often the case with Oink) simple, but clever enough to garner a raised eyebrow and (importantly) some laughs. My partner and I played it on date night (2 player is double-handed = more control via more knowledge of which of the 11 cards are out in the round). As with most Oink games, the production is super-kyoot-to-boot.

It won't replace Triumvirate as our go-to trick-taker for 2 (or even Potato Man as our secondary), but it's a *very* short game with enough subtlety for when we are brain-dead.... but it might be a gateway to Clans, Candy-Chaser, and a reason to revisit R (rivals).

10. Board Game: Coimbra [Average Rating:7.70 Overall Rank:169]
Board Game: Coimbra
This is four weeks worth of plays. I felt like I was barely playing games, but I guess I do squeeze them in here and there.

Board Game: Concordia: Aegyptus / Creta
Board Game: Concordia
Board Game: Pandemic
Board Game: Dungeon Mayhem
Board Game: Deus
Board Game: Downforce
Board Game: Coimbra
Board Game: Clank!: Sunken Treasures
Board Game: Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure
Board Game: MacGregor
Board Game: Bobbin' Bumblebee

 8   Concordia: Aegyptus / Creta x3 (5 all-time)
 8   Concordia x5 (15 all-time)
N and I continue to enjoy this. Simple-ish but interesting enough. Not too brain-burning for tired parents.

 8   Pandemic x2 (30 all-time)
I like this more than I remembered. Legacy Season 1 kind of burned me out. Did that happen to anyone else?

Anyways, I borrowed Pandemic Cthulu from E for solo play this week. Hopefully I can get some plays in without X grabbing all the components and running away cackling.

 2   Dungeon Mayhem NEW!
I didn't think this was very good or very interesting. I guess the asymmetry is the appeal, but everyone is still just chipping away at each other's VPs. I feel like this game is designed with beer and pretzels in mind. Lots and lots of beer and pretzels.

 6   Deus (14 all-time)
N starting clearing barbarians quickly, but then pivoted suddenly and started building massive engines. That gave me time to build my own engine and generated a ton of points off of naval shipments. I won. N would have been me clean if she had raced military.

I dunno. N won't let me get rid of it, but I just don't love playing it. It doesn't seem to do anything particularly well. Everything is just okay.

 10   Downforce (10 all-time)
Nephew came over. My two cars to his three cars. I had him beat good until the 3/4 mark. He played 5 straight white cards to boost his orange car across for 1st - a car I hadn't placed a bet on. So his win plus Round 1 bet netted him 16 points before we counted anything else. I did everything else well, but couldn't make up the gap. 14-11 nephew wins.

 8   Coimbra (12 all-time)
My final play of Coimbra was with my nephew. Played well enough, hitting multiple II monasteries for points and hitting a III monastery well enough.

Enjoyed my 12 plays, and just as happy to sell it on now.

 8   Clank!: Sunken Treasures (3 all-time)
 8   Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure (21 all-time)
Nephew wanted to play this, and I had more fun than I expected to. We did play with "bounty hunters" (lifted from the Clank! In! Space! rulebook) which we enjoyed a lot.

 4   MacGregor NEW!
X and I messed around with it. She is now able to understand that the coloured keys allow her to pass through the door to an adjacent room. She isn't able to plan yet, and when I catch her and she becomes the ghost, she and I play one card at a time for the ghost, but she doesn't understand the forward planning yet, so it doesn't really work. Basically I feed her key cards, and then we pause to let me move towards her, then back to her to plot a way out.

 6   Bobbin' Bumblebee (8 all-time)
This is X's fave right now. But entirely for the toy factor, not for the game.

RETIRING
Coimbra is gone. Sold it an hour after posting it. It didn't have the arc or the variability to keep it longer, but I liked a lot of what the game does. Nearly a great game. Instead, only a quite good one.

ACQUIRING
Essen pre-orders are currently Cooper Island, Maracaibo, Trismegistus, Ecos: First Continent, Egizia, Tapestry, and I will be adding Terramara when I can get it. Still might ditch out on Tapestry, but then Phrim said he liked it, so...

Thinking about Horrified.

Scorecard for the Week/Month/Year as of 5Oct2019:

4/4/324 plays of 4/4/174 total games, with 0/0/36 expansions employed.
Plays with 9/9/98 distinct opponents.

0/0/31 games acquired (plus 0/0/19 expansions.)
0/0/1 games sold/traded (plus 0/0/2 expansions.)
0/0/20 games ordered (plus 0/0/7 expansions.)
Orders for 1 games and 1 expansions still outstanding.

With the Lunch@work group:
Board Game: Stick 'Em

1x _8_ Stick 'Em (59 total plays)

Could have counted for two plays, I guess; since we added a player (going from 5 to 6!) part way through.

Neither 5 nor 6 are its best count. But it's a lovely game for (gently or not, as the fit strikes) trash-talking one's colleagues over lunch. We really enjoyed it.

With the Wednesday night gang:
Board Game: Heaven & Ale

1x _7⅔_ Heaven & Ale (8 total plays)

Last three plays (with this group, anyway) we had a single winner. And in this one he placed dead last. Perhaps pride goes before, as they say; perhaps his Infallible Pattern worked with two opponents, but not so well with 3; perhaps our first place player just did really nicely. It was still fun.

Board Game: New Frontiers

1x _8_ New Frontiers (8 total plays)

This was probably unfair: I'd played the previous Saturday; while the others hadn't played for a few weeks. And there definitely was an "I remember how to do this" factor. So let's pretend it was just a three player game with me playing spoiler along the margins.

My place on Saturday:
Board Game: Master of Economy

1x _7⅓_ Master of Economy (3 total plays) (9 years dusty)

This is weird and interesting. Stock-holding game without any huge volatility; in theory one could take over another person's company - but it's hard to do in practice.

And it has a bit of that Greed Incorporated colour: the winner is the one with the most money; and embezzling funds out of one's own company is a great was to pull together money to invest in better-run things. And of course, if there's a race to the bottom, then perhaps the money one pulled out of a company before the shareholders get their hands on it could be the margin of victory.

Owned-and-unplayed: 0 (+0/-0)
Owned-and-played-once: 97 (+0/-0)

Outlook for the week: Probably lunch and evening games this week. I might convince R & son #2 to give Wibbell++ a try with three.

I've ordered Babylonia to pick up at Spiel. But that's it so far. There's a few other things that amuse me (Concordia: Balearica / Cyprus or Concordia Venus: Balearica / Italia, perhaps? Though I have Concordia: Venus and so already have the Cyprus & Italia maps, so perhaps I should give it a pass); but nothing else ordered so far.

12. Board Game: Zimbabweee Trick [Average Rating:6.61 Unranked]
Board Game: Zimbabweee Trick
A quiet week for my collection. None left, one came in and I got two unplayed games off my list of shame. If you look down the ratings are not fantastic but I had a great time playing them nonetheless.

Board Game: Jump Drive

 9   Jump Drive x4 (101 all-time)
First up, Lærke and I finished our push for our first century. The four plays saw a couple of wild swings. In the second play the score was 65-14 and then in the very next the roles were reversed with an 11-58 score. And that last one even went for 7 rounds. Now that we’ve reached 100 plays I wonder how often we’ll play it in the future.

Board Game: Conquest of Paradise

 6   Conquest of Paradise (2 all-time)
So this tanked completely with Lærke so I had arranged to play it with a mate who had soloed it a couple of times at a small con I attended for a few hours on Saturday. This was a very exploration heavy game and because I was luckier this time and went as far away from him as possible I won easily. He spent a lot of time trying to get to South America in search of the magical kumara and even got two die modifiers to help him. And yet he still failed 5 times. Funny. He really should have attacked me early when I spent all my points on growing my civilization and getting culture cards. He got attack bonuses from a couple of his and he would have been able to take away a couple of islands from me easily before I could have gotten my defences up. We decided to use all variants so this was the first time I tried the event cards. They are fun. It is still very much an experience game where you need to be interested in the setting and theme to enjoy it. I also expect it to be better with more than 2. My opponent said he liked it better as a solitaire but I probably would not agree.

Board Game: passtally

 5   passtally NEW!
He then taught me passtally – and saved me from the expenses of buying it at Essen. It was on my watchlist. It is not anymore. It is very much ‘headache – the game’ and even for someone like me who is very far from AP prone, it induced it in me. Too much stuff is going on as the game progresses so you can hardly see what is good for you with all the many many options so finding something that is both good for you and hurtful for your opponent is more often than not out of luck than because of a clever move. That ruins this kind of game for me. It looks nice but no thank you.

Board Game: Irish Gauge

 7   Irish Gauge NEW!
We were then joined by a mutual friend for a couple of train games and we started out with Irish Gauge. Martin had told me he wasn’t too keen on it so my expectations were quite low but I must say I liked it quite a bit. I do not know if the difference between us is based on a difference in player count but we found that it worked quite well at 3. With Ian O’Toole’s artwork it is also very pretty for a train game. I wish I could compate it to all the other similar Winsome Games out there but I fear my experience is too small. I did very much like how you can decide yourself the colour of cube you put on a city as that will influence how many cubes are left in the bag and thus also how often that cube you put on the table will be scored since one of your available actions is drawing three cubes from a bag which will determine the colours that will be scored on the board. All lines will pay dividends this way but the amount varies depending on which colours are pulled when. What I did not like as much is that it feels like a punishment sometimes to put up stock for an auction if you do not win it yourself because then you lose a turn instead of improving your companies. Perhaps it’s because we were only three so there was less collusion in the holding of stock early on.

Board Game: Northern Pacific

 N/A   Northern Pacific NEW!
We then moved on to Northern Pacific which I have heard so many very good things about. I saw none of it. It really does not work at 3 at all. I would play again but the more the merrier it looks like for this game. I have the files to craft a copy myself but it will not be the first project I start on after this experience.

Board Game: Zimbabweee Trick

 7   Zimbabweee Trick NEW!
I got a copy of Hanibal’s lovely resetting of this to Weimar era Germany and found 3 other players willing to try another Japanese trick taker with a weird twist. But it works, it really works. The trick here is that the cards you play do not go to the winner of the trick but are kept in front of you in a line where the numbers you played previously also count towards having the highest card. Hence the idea of inflation – and the numbers will grown insanely large in the end. It is one of those games where there is 1x1, 2x2 up till 10x10 and the 10s are fun because they are high this round but in the next round you’ll cover the 1 so only the 0 counts afterwards. All this means that you have to set yourself up for your scoring rounds over at least two rounds but perhaps more.

Board Game: Terraforming Mars

 6   Terraforming Mars (26 all-time)
Lærke and I played TM yesterday during a couple of Lauge’s naps. It was a very tight game where I did most of the terraforming and she built her engine so I knew I had to press for a quicker end to the game than I normally would and with very little help from her. I was 20 points ahead on the track when we finished and had the most stuff on the board but Lærke had built a very strong VP engine so she almost caught up with me but not quite. I won 111-109.

Weekly-monthly-game group
 8   Vast: The Crystal Caverns
After Cosmic encounter in September Vast: The Crystal Caverns is the new game of the month and I´m super stoked about it. For all its many flaws I just find this game to be extremely fascinating and a whole lot of fun. First game was a 5 player game (6 actually but two were sharing a role) with 3 first-timers, which is not ideal as there is ALOT to wrap your head around and the game drags at 5p if people are APing.
But we still had great fun and I managed a rather convincing win as the cave.

4   Exit: The Game – The Secret Lab NEW!
A couple of us had to get up very early the next day so we decided against the scheduled game of Gloomhaven. Instead the night´s host pulled out Exit: The Game – The Secret Lab. Apparently the group had played another one of the cases before I moved in and had had a great time with it.
This one was eeehhh... alright at best I guess. It was basically just a series of somewhat entertaining "numbers, letters and colors" puzzles stringed together by the absolute bare minimum of a narrative (the story might as well not have been there). A few puzzles required a little too much guess work in that their internal logic didn´t lead to a single possible conclusion but rather a couple. And then you just had to "type in" the different possible answers until one of them came out positive.

Suffice to say while I greatly enjoy solving puzzles like this it is not what i am looking for on a game night.
... Unless of course the puzzles are delivered in a satisfying narrative oozing with atmosphere (e.g Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases) or with a heavy dose of humor powered by the players´on incompetence (i.e Witness).

Miscellaneous
 9   Millennium Blades
Solo play. I screwed everything up which turned out to be a valid strategy against the boss I was encountering. A very strange win!

 6   Leo
 N/A   Kleiner Obstgartenx2
Played My first Orchard with my 3-year-old for the first time in a few months. Since she´s been able to grasp more rules we have stock to slightly more complex games, like Leo, Robot Turtles and Chess. But playing Orchard again was a treat! It was super fun to watch how much more she understands now. There was no need for constant rules-reminders. She clearly had the rules down and was super focused and within 10 minutes we had won. So naturally we played again.

 5   King of Tokyo
One of the children here in the commune (9-year-old) proudly brought HER copy to dinner the other day. So she, her mother and I played a 3 player game after the tables had been cleared. This was the first play of King of Tokyo since I sold it around 6 years ago. And it was very enjoyable, more than I remembered it to be.

 7   Triumvirate NEW!
This play was actually from last week but I had forgotten to log it. I only played it once which is unfortunate as it has me somewhat captivated. It definitely doesn´t feel like any other trick-taker out there. I particularly like how you don´t play out all your cards each round so you naturally end up clogging up your hand with a bunch of cards you don´t wanna play. Its a bit arboretum-esque in that regard which coming from me is every high praise.

 7   Pax Pamir (Second Edition)
This was a solo game. Playing 2-handed against myself in a effort to figure out why this game isn´t quite clicking with me yet. Further tests are needed.

Mudville Season 3
I was asked to join an online 12-player BH2045 tournament. Two games a week via the app.

It's Mudville Season 3. I know they're hoping to run more seasons and would love to have more players. We have a few BH2045 enthusiasts so if you're interested you might want to reach out. It does require scheduling two games each week for 6 weeks. So far the series are taking 30-45 minutes, so it's a bit of a time commitment. I was hesitant to sign up but so far so good. Other than losing!

Started the season 0-2

We just finished week 1 and I lost both series. I was outplayed in the first one and felt I could have won the second aside from a couple bad plays on my part and some luck for my opponent. He got two cloning cards and then managed to get both of them in his hand for three of six games.

And then, with the series tied 2-2, I had the lead at the bottom of the sixth. He had to top-deck for a last chance save and got just the card he needed to win. Then I made a terrible free agent choice and he easily took game six.

But the designer, Mike Fitzgerald, is also in my pool and he is also 0-2 after the first week. So that makes me feel a bit better.

Teaching Kids BH2045

Seeing me play online triggered my son's interest in the game. And he convinced two of his friends to give it a try.

So after school last week I taught three boys (ages 11, 10, and 8) to play Baseball Highlights. It's tricky to teach kids and manage two games at the same time, but it worked out great.

They even got to experience a game that came down to the bottom of the sixth, a visitor save to push extra innings, and more drama from there. A lot of fun.

Plus, they're interested in Football Highlights 2052, which should arrive next month.

Board Game: London (Second Edition)

 8   London (Second Edition) (8 all-time)

Just the one play of the one game. It was interesting though, as S demonstrated that it is possible to go high poverty and still win the game. Our first plays of Second Edition were making me believe that it wasn't a viable strategy. Of course, I was the one attempting it and we all know how well I do against S.

The Week Ahead

Without trying to sound like a broken record, I'm still playing far too much Anthem. It's just easier to sit in front of the computer and turn off than to relearn just about any game in my board game collection.

While nothing is planned for this week, it is a long (Thanksgiving) weekend, so maybe something will get played. Maybe we can bribe a friend or two with dinner....

Unplayed games of note in shrink: 18Lilliput, Maria, Francis Drake, German Railways, Tikal and Revolution: The Dutch Revolt 1568-1648.

Unplayed games not in shrink: Mottainai.

Last week's plays:

|9| Gloomhaven (+Forgotten Circles)

Not much to report from last week. I was still out of the country for most of it. One game of Gloomhaven when I got back. We were trying to rescue some important documents from burning ships, nothing too challenging but at least we had more autonomy over how we went about it. The first two scenarios of the expansion dictated player roles too much for my liking. You're obliged to use the Diviner character in all these scenarios and the first two have special rules which force her to act in a particular way. I was glad to return to a more normal scenario. The aftermath gave us an interesting puzzle to solve and I stayed up far too late figuring out the answers.

The earlier part of the week was spent in northern Azerbaijan, Baku and then Nakhchivan. We climbed 1500+ steps to see what has been called the "Machu Picchu of the Caucasus", visited an old salt mine now used as a health resort, and saw what is claimed to be the tomb of Noah. Oh, we were also pulled over by police looking for a bribe, so it wasn't all good.
