I hadn’t noticed these ice buckets until I found a chrome one last week. Found the rarer copper version this morning. Six dollars at a flea. Wouldn’t want to disappoint.

So some people may not appreciate the significance of this savings as it won't sound like much per se, nor are the items cheap.

Cre8audio has created a eurorack bundle of their 84hp case with two of their modules and a few patch cables all for a discounted MSRP is $270; they call it the Nifty Bundle. (If you were to buy these individually, it comes in about $350.) This is cheaper than most smaller case without any bundled modules. The modules Cellz and Chipz give you a way of playing immediately. I've been looking at going full blown eurorack with utilities for my semi-modulars for about 6 months now, trying to find a cheap entry point.

Well I took advantage of the Perfect Circuit holiday sale and ordered the bundle and the book Patch & Tweak. The sale netted me another 10% off, making it less than $250. The book was 15% off and it goes into modular synthesis in depth. It's a HUGE coffee table style book.

I've been wanting to test clean an enameled cast iron pot by baking it in a self-cleaning oven. Works well with regular cast iron, just wasn't sure about enameled cast iron.

I found this Le Creuset 2.75 quart Dutch oven which was perfect for the test. It had food baked on to the outside and bottom and the inside was very badly stained looking. It was only $2.99, so no big loss if I ruin it. Other than it looking really nasty it didn't have any chips or rust.

I'm kicking myself for not taking "before" pictures.

I removed the knob and placed the base and lid in the oven and turned on the self-cleaning mode. A couple of hours later I was amazed, it looks practically like brand new! I kind of figured the exterior crud would bake off without any problem, but I was really surprised about how clean the interior came out.

Considering these sell for about $250 new and about $175 used, now that it's clean I'd say I got a great deal for $2.99!

Saw something sitting on the one dollar tables at a flea today, and I knew right away what it was. It's a 'foldscope', an actual working microscope that costs...just a dollar to manufacture. The body of the thing is just some paper origami, with a lens stuck in the middle. Kind like how those Google VR viewers were just folded cardboard with some cheap lenses. So a dollar seemed like a good deal to buy one and try it out.

It's missing the tweezers from the kit, but everything else appears to be there, including the test slides. Unfortunately my eyes are so bad that I can't see anything through the thing. With my glasses off I don't think the focus 'shim' they use has enough range to compensate for my bad eyes, and with my glasses on I can't seem to get close enough to the tiny view port to make anything out. Bah! Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

They do have a method of viewing via your cell phone camera, but that involves placing a sticker'd magnet around the lens on your phone. Not sure it's worth doing that yet.

But it's a super neat item. A Stanford professor invented it as a way to provide super low cost science capabilities to everyone in the world:

We were out running errands today when my Mom called. She'd dug out an old digital photo frame that we'd given her as a gift (maybe fifteen years ago?). It wasn't working and she wanted to know if I could figure out what was wrong (over the phone). Oh boy, tech support in the aisle at Safeway on ancient, obsolete stuff.

I couldn't immediately pinpoint the problem, but made some suggestions (like popping the card in and out a few times). It still didn't work, dead as a doornail.

On our way home we stopped at a little charity thrift down the street. And there, sitting on the electronics shelf, was a NixPlay digital photo frame!

From gallery of bobpony

Is that crazy or what? It's the 2014 model (w12b), but it works just great. With this I'll be able to remotely send her photos, manage the photos on the device, configure things for her...it should be much better than that old, tiny, broken frame from the early 2000's.

Fifty dollars at Unicorn Thrift. Which sounds like a lot, but it was a deal. These still go for around $140 on eBay, and the newer models are north of $200.

I did call her and told her about my luck, and that she'd be getting the new frame this week in the mail. She then called back five minutes later - her partner Bill had located the on/off switch on the old frame, and it was working just fine now. I never thought to check whether she'd tried the on/off switch! shake

So now she'll have *two* digital photo frames. Lol.

A Xaphoon! What is it? It's kind of an elaborate recorder that uses saxophone reeds. Made in Hawaii.

I picked this up for ten dollars at a flea. I used to play saxophone and clarinet, so this should be good for at least ten dollars of fun.

A few months ago I ran across a building toy that my brother and I had as kids - it's called Tog'l and it was Mattel's answer to Lego. It was only on the market a couple of years, but we had lots of the stuff. At the time I thought it was really unique to run across a set of these blocks, so I bought them.

Today I found another set! A larger set, still in the box, with all of the paperwork/plans. Very neat. The woman selling it at the flea market wanted ten dollars. I offered five. She wanted seven. I looked at it and decided that I just didn't really need another set. So I said that five was kind of my limit and walked away.

She yelled after me that she'd take the five dollars.

That tactic almost never works, and it's wrong to describe it as a tactic - I seriously was walking away from it. But I'd offered five, so I paid her the five. Now I have two sets of Tog'l! Anyone want to have a Tog'l party?

Look at the price tag in that last photo. A huge 300 piece building set, just six dollars and ninety-seven cents in the late 60's. Bet that was a lot of money back then!

I had a nice find today. It's a ravioli maker attachment for a Kitchenaid mixer. Nineteen dollars and nineteen cents at GW.

I was standing in an aisle, looking over the shelves when out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy putting some items back on a shelf. Then he took a big framed painting and slid it over to cover up those shelves. "Hmmm" I thought. I wonder what he just 'hid'.

When he walked away I went over and took a peek. And there it was.

We love our Kitchenaid mixer. And we have the pasta rollers/cutters for it. They're great. So I figured why not, we should have ravioli as well. It's twenty dollars, but why not splurge. It looks brand new, I don't think it was ever used.

Then I looked up the reviews on Amazon, just to see if they really work (they do!). And that's when I saw it - they're $199 on Amazon. Seriously. For a thing that rolls out ravioli.

I happily paid $19.19. And stopped at the store to pick up ingredients for some pumpkin sage ravioli. I'll let you know how they turn out.

Last year I found and repaired a Francis Francis X1 espresso machine. It was gifted to our daughter, she and her boyfriend love it. They use it every day. Her friends love to come over and try out the cool Italian coffee machine. And she tells them how her Dad found it in a thrift store and fixed it.

One of her friends had mentioned that 'if your Dad ever runs across another one I'd like to have it!'. I thought, no way, I was lucky to find *one* of these. Two just isn't likely to happen.

Today I found another one!

It was at a flea market, and it was *filthy*. I mean disgusting. Crud all over it.

From gallery of bobpony
From gallery of bobpony

And it was missing the metal drip plate, the drip pan, and the portafilter (the handle thingy that holds the ground coffee). Still, I figured that maybe I could replace those things if the price was right for the machine.

The guy wanted...five dollars.

I paid him quickly and politely. I did ask about the missing parts, and he paused for a second, thought, and then smiled. "Yes! I have the metal plate! It's here somewhere, if you come back next week I'll find it and save it for you."

Sweet! He doesn't have the portafilter, which is the hardest part to find on these, but at least I don't have to scrounge up a drip plate.

I scrubbed it and cleaned it, and got it looking reasonably well. And I evicted the big hairy spider that had been living inside the water tank. But when I unscrewed the lid I found that the boiler had been leaking quite profusely:

From gallery of bobpony

So I spent the afternoon disassembling and troubleshooting the boiler. Turns out the pipe feeding water to the boiler had developed a split under the brass knuckle that held it onto the boiler. There was just barely enough slack in that line to cut out the bad part and still reach the boiler inlet (I had to bend the pump over just a bit). And...it works!

Now our daughter's friend is still going to have to find a portafilter for it, specifically for the older aluminum boiler X1. Our daughter texted the friend some photos of the machine tonight - she's very excited. And what I thought was a dull grey machine turned out to be a pearlescent baby blue. It's sweet! I'm very happy I was able to resuscitate a five dollar espresso machine! I think Francis Francis would approve.

I just happened to find another lime green Le Creuset oval dutch oven, except this one is a bit bigger. 6.75 quart compared to the 2.75 quart one listed up above.

This one was pretty clean on the outside. It mostly just had the staining on the inside and it only had some very small and minor chips around the edge. So, for only $9.99 I figured I'd clean it in the oven on the self-cleaning mode once again and see what happens.

This time I remembered to take "before" pictures.

From gallery of CurtisC

I left the lid out this time since it was really clean. I placed just the bottom in the oven and set the self-cleaning mode for two hours (that's as low as it will go). After it was done and cooled down, I gave it a light wash to remove the dust/ash and this is what it looks like now...

From gallery of CurtisC

Considering this particular pot sells for almost $400 new, I'd say I got another great deal for $9.99!

No, not the composer. 3 splendid Wagner cast iron skillets from a ways back.
A Number 5, number 8, and number 10 sizes. All three are without a Wagner logo on the bottom, but the #5 & #8 both have a description of the skillet on the bottom, along with a pattern letter. The #10 doesn't have the description, just a pattern letter, so I'm guessing that's the oldest. As I understand it, the Wagner company didn't put descriptive labels on its products until the 1950s, and then had to add "Made in the USA" in 1960.
So, the #10 is pre 1950s, and the #5 & #8 were both produced in the 50s.
All three are in excellent condition, with not a lot of crud on the outside from campfires (which is a fairly common condition here in Minnesota) and really nice inside cooking surfaces.
They'll get used a bit over the next couple of years, but basically I'm holding them to give to my kids when they move out of the house.

#5 - $7
#8 - $9
#10 - $12 half off with coupon, so $6
$24 and change with tax

So I consider this very thrifty...

I love unique small boutique synth manufacturers and what they produce. There is a company in Portugal/Brazil that makes several boutique instruments. I've been interested in a drum synth that I could integrate with Eurorack modular stuff (to go with the Nifty Bundle; btw, I'll still get a Volca Drum at some point...). Anyway, I ran across Sismo and they used to make one called a Samba. So I contacted them and asked about it... They had stopped making it, but out of nostalgia about someone asking, they are going to make one for me for $245 US. Side note - the mass produced Volca Drum I want retails at $189.

I love the fact this has 5 independent sequencers* and simple FM sounding drum sounds. It is a very unique instrument and should be capable of some nice polyrhythms. The red color looks stunning also.

http://sismo.space has some photos, but not much else.

* Most drum machines have one sequencer on which all drum parts are played along several tracks. 5 independent sequencers means each track can be sequenced entirely differently with different rhythms and sounds.

I've always known to watch for Marx brand playsets while thrifting, but have only ever found one. But yesterday I found a similar item from a different company-- Brumberger. Actual box I got shown here.

From gallery of chrisdr

What I find most fascinating is that in this Information Age, I can't find *anything* on the web about Brumberger as a toy company. No Wikipedia entry, doesn't appear on the lists of old toy companies I found, nothing. When I search I find listings for other Brumberger playsets on Ebay, but nothing about the company itself.

So I just searched "Brumberger" and there is mention of a Brumberger based in Brooklyn that sold camera accessories. And my playset box says "Brumberger Company, Brooklyn NY". So this company sold camera equipment and playsets? (And I can't find much about the history of Brumberger as a camera company, either).

I'm surprised there's such a hole in knowledge and information about a fairly large US company that operated as recently as 60 years ago.

(Oh yeah- Kirkland Value Village, $4.99. Very surprised the price was that low, given the large box and vintage look)
