My team of four is level 11. I'm getting more used to the combo system and the other new stuff that's being thrown at me, like the equipment upgrades and mastery bonuses.

I'm taking a bunch of screenshots to provide some for the gallery that aren't loaded with spoilers.

Wednesday edit: Played a little yesterday and made it to the capital city. They're really laying it on thick with the commentary on military worship.

I'm starting this game from my hardcore list this week. I never played the game on the PlayStation 2 (or its PS3 remaster for that matter), so this will be all new to me. I've really only seen gameplay of it here and there as well, and mostly of the old version. But I understand many people love this game. Hopefully I can say the same after playing it.

Gearing up for The Outer Worlds, but the weather here is super dreary and my wife is fighting off a cold, so I felt like playing something a bit more 'auto-pilot' than usual.

Crystalis was one of my favorite games as a kid. I was probably in the 2nd or 3rd grade the first time I played it, and I didn't finish it until a few years later. Just getting all the way through Mt. Saber and defeating Kelbesque, the first of the Draygonian generals, seemed epic and challenging.

Well, I blitzed all the way through to him in one sitting, although it was nearly 3 hours of play. Despite this game's famously eye-brow raising progression triggers, I decided to play mostly blind. That's been going OK, although I've run into multiple '???' moments. Early on, it's clear that you need to go check on the guy who guards the Windmill, but off in a side-cave, Zebu (one of the four wise-men who counsel you on your quest) is waiting to teach you basic healing magic. I suppose they didn't want you to miss learning this spell, so the windmill guard literally will not spawn until you do. Similarly, I always forget that the game requires you to visit the secluded village of Oak, see that no-one will talk to you, and leave, all before the wise man Tornel and his pupil Thom will appear somewhere else altogether.

Still, it's mostly like riding a bike. Even when you don't really remember, you remember.

Saved my game in the coastal city of Portoa. I've got the Sword of Wind + Tornado Bracelet as well as the Sword of Fire + Flame Bracelet. If memory serves... I think I can just walk to where the Sword of Water is. I believe that's where you meet the 'other' hero - that's one of the more interesting things about Crystalis. You awaken from a cryogenic chamber at the start of the game, and you assume you're the only one, but you're not.

Beat Shadows of Chernobyl and now on to this. I am skipping Clear Sky, since that is the most recent game I played of the trilogy.

I am only about 2 hours in and I'm getting my butt kicked and loving it. I've already come across some fantastic map and accompanying quest designs that were quite clever. Looking forward to this experience taking off after getting my bearings in the beginning.

Continued along in this cool little jRPG. Ended up turning down the difficulty a notch from hard to medium, not because I couldn't beat things so far, but just because every random combat was like a puzzle that needed precise solving to win, whereas I just wanted to play this in a window while binge-watching the final season of Maron before Netflix removed it. The difference in difficulty is Significant. Like, I still had characters die and had to plan out actions, but it was no longer mistake=failure, which is nice for a game I'm not devoting 100% brainpower to.

I hit the midway point in The Messenger. I said earlier that I found this game to be much easier than I was expecting, but it has ramped up quite a bit. The last two bosses I beat...

Spoiler (click to reveal)
the flying serpent and the goat-legged devil

...took me about a dozen tries each to beat. Very difficult to pull off. On top of that, the platforming is getting much more difficult as well.

I'm now firmly in the second half of the game. I see what it's doing, but I'm not sure I'm looking forward to it.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
The game is more open-world now, where I have to go back to previous levels and find things in the environment to deal with. One thing I found is that I got a seed from the elder in the starting village, and I have to plant it in "the past" to harvest leaves in "the future". I thought I'd find the required flower bed somewhere in the village, but after a short search I looked it up online and it turns out it's all the way at the mountains where I fought those two ogres?? Ok, kind of an odd logical leap, but but what's worse is that to get to the mountains, I have to get there from either the level before it or the level after it. There are only three teleport spots I can use now, with only three more to unlock, which means that to get anywhere is going to be a huge hassle. I wish that all of the portals for the store were eligible for fast-travel. I tried going to the snow area and back-tracking, but even when heading DOWN the level, the platforming is very difficult, frustrating, and time-consuming.

I'm torn on whether I want to continue. I'm halfway through and am kind of curious to see where the game goes, but the difficulty of the bosses, the platforming, and the navigation are all starting to outpace my patience, so I might call it abandoned and move on to something else in my library. I got it free from the Epic Store giveaway, so at least that helps get rid of most of the "sunk cost" feeling when giving up on a game.

I also started Spider-Man on the PS4 -- I had no plans this weekend and am taking a day off on Thursday just to chill, so I figured I was due for starting a cinematic game (I was torn between this and Uncharted 4). The game has a strong start -- the way the opening cinematic transitions into gameplay is really neat. I started on one notch down from default difficulty (so, 2nd difficulty out of 4) since I'm here for the story and spectacle, not to be challenged in combat. I also took advantage of the option which lets you hold a button instead of mashing it during QTEs, and might turn off QTEs altogether (huge kudos to the developer for including these options for both accessibility and general user experience).

I'm finding the controls a little hard to get used to -- it's been a long time since I had a game use O for dodging, and the dodge timing is a fair bit different from AC Odyssey, which is now in my muscle memory. I'm a little intimidated by the open world content, but knowing that I can unlock suits and upgrades motivates me to pick things up when they're nearby. So far I'm getting what I signed up for -- the game looks great!

I also started playing Shadowrun Hong Kong, mostly playing on my lunch breaks at work. I'm playing a Shaman, with a pistol for damage. I'm a little torn on what spells to pick up -- I am not sure if I should do a dip into spellcasting for some of the early spells there, because a lot of the shaman spells feel a little underwhelming. In combat, I feel like my character is least effective, compared to the other three teammates I have. I'm enjoying the writing in the game quite a bit, and the exploration/combat encounters are pretty good too so far. I'm a little overwhelmed by the hacking mechanics, since there's some real-time gameplay in there. I think I prefer Dragonfall's hacking mechanics better.

Finally, I've been playing Slay the Spire on my switch. I like it, but I find that either I can't get a good synergy by the end of the first boss and I fizzle out, or I do and the rest of the game is a cakewalk (or I get screwed by a bad shuffle or one enemy that I can't deal with (looking at you, Goblin Nob)).

Funny how much I remember seeing the alpha of this years ago, when EA decided they weren't interested.

Another game I'm playing for about 20-30 minutes bursts. The rogue permanent leveling after you die is appealing. The land is so bleak and barren. Seen endless dust and endless snow. Hope there are some greener passages.

Using C4 can have tremendous results. Hoping to get better with the pipe bombs. You set the bombs alight then time dropping them in enemies laps behind you. That part feels a bit like T2.

Opened up the second sets of abilities. There's about some 30 different skills you can level up.

Actually Gemcraft: Frostborn Wrath, which released on Friday.

I'm unclear, at this point, what exactly I like about this series, but I have enough fond memories of it that I was willing to pick this up on (Steam) release. Reviews were "mostly positive", but looking at a couple of negative ones, it seemed like most of the complaints were "game is too hard" or "you have to play more puzzle-like levels in order to unlock the skills!" and given a lot of my complaints with the last game (it felt like ~75% of it could be facerolled using one strategy), these both seemed like points in its favor.

Let's be clear: I don't think the developer has done a great job on past games in the series, balance-wise. GemCraft Chapter Zero: Gem of Eternity is maybe the best, at least early on, at generating interesting levels (but there's some some extremely strange gating on the bosses, like players were showing up to the fights underleveled and grousing about them being impossible with their skill build and the dev was like "okay, fine, I know how to fix that problem"; GemCraft Lost Chapter: Labyrinth is maybe better overall, but has its own busted tactics. So it's quite possible that I, too, would have wound up with the same complaints about the game -- but I was looking forward to finding out. However, the dev has already released three or four patches, in one case (not entirely unwelcome) reducing the difficulty on some of the levels that were more of a spike, in another greatly lowering difficulty across the board, and in a third scaling back some of the latter changes, but making it so that skills are more available. And of course Steam auto-updates, so I'm pretty sure I don't have any way to play the as-released game any more.

Having written this out, it already bothers me less than it did. I guess I just miss the old days, where patching wasn't mandatory (to be fair, most earlier iterations of Gemcraft, specifically, were flash games, so they never had such a period) and it was still possible to play specific builds of, e.g., Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

I'm still working my way through courses on PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX; I believe I've now played all of the courses that were in the PS3 release aside from what I assume was the original "Championship I" course. Not sure I like any of them quite as well as "Championship II", though having the variety is worth something.

I'm completing my playthrough of the Shadowrun trilogy with this. I played Shadowrun Returns in 2018 and Shadowrun: Dragonfall in 2019. So, this is part of my hardcore list for 2020.

I've clocked in 20 hours by now and completed all the preparation missions which are not part of the main story. My characters are levelled up as far as possible and I'll start hunting the assailants of my foster father with the next mission.

As in Dragonfall, my character is a decker with a secondary skill as rigger. These skills are synergistic as they are both intelligence-based. I didn't want to raise another attribute in order to give my decker some fighting skills. It works even better here than in Dragonfall. While I had to use medic packs and revival a lot in Dragonfall, I only used the revival feature once and rarely need to resort to using medic packs. I'm not sure if Hongkong is easier or my skills have improved.

My team typically consists of my decker/rigger main character, the Russian rigger with his phenomenal drone Koschi, the Japanese ghoul samurai and either my buddy and security specialist Duncan or the troll shaman. Luckily, the one mission I had to do with the other decker provided by the game wasn't too battle-intensive. This was a problem in one mission in Dragonfall which was really difficult with only two deckers but left no choice of characters. I would like to use the shaman more but the other characters are too interesting to skip them. The only specialization I don't get to experience is mage.

I enjoy this game very much. But there is one mission which unexcusably has the possibility to get stuck by design. If you don't do one specific thing, you are able to continue the mission but won't get a key item to complete this. The game does not tell you this but you will end up in a situation where nothing happens anymore and the only option is to restart the mission. I tried this mission three times with the same frustrating result. So be careful when you tackle the Ares mission.

Still finding the movement and camera wonky and frustrating. On Foot, the movement's a little better with the camera pulled all the way out, instead of just over the shoulder. (this angle reminds me of GTA3.) and driving is still tough. but I'm getting a bit more used to it.

Starting to give me a headache though as I play, but at least I'm not motion sick.

Did the first couple of missions. Tutorials still keep popping up, so I guess I'm not free yet to run around. Have to remind myself to play this 'For Real" instead of playing it like Saints Row!

I've been playing lots of this. I should be focused on beating the few bosses I have left and then plumbing the depths of the darkest dungeon, but I like the loop of making parties, doing quests, and getting stuff enough that I keep on doing it, past the point of utility. ...Probably shouldn't have played on Radiant (which apparently shortens the game by cutting out busywork), but that's what I did, so here I am. My preferred party right now is a Man-at-Arms, a Highwayman, a Vestal, and either a Jester or a Houndmaster (someone who can deal damage and can relieve stress), although all the characters are interesting - except the Antiquarian. Not sure what to do with that guy.

And I'm also still playing Final Fantasy IX. Just arrived at Lundblum. I'd kinda forgotten this part of the game, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The cut scenes are great, the characters are interesting, and the story is mostly engaging. Looking forward to getting Freya onboard (had to name her recently, so I know she's coming), although despite my propensity for Red Mages, my recollection is that I wasn't a big fan of her when I last played this.

A friend unexpectedly bought me a steam gift card for christmas, and so, with a fresh 25 dollars in hand, I bought the new Subnautica game (for playing when it's complete) and Pilgrims, which I immediately installed and cracked open.

It's Amanita Design, and is exactly what I expected. Quirky, language-free game with silly charm, tricky puzzles and great art. I kinda dig the card-based aesthetic, which was pure visual choice and really isn't any different than the usual adventure game interface.

Also Path of Exile. hit 89, and I have 3 of 4 conquerors defeated, but I probably shouldn't. I need to bump my DPS a lot because that's the only way I'll be able to finish Drox.

I also had both a Synthesis map (easy map, crushed by the boss) and a shaper influenced map (I forget which boss it was). Same situation. Easy map, absolutely crushed by the boss. I've hit my wall but I think a piece of gear or two could easily push me to the limit. Maybe hitting 90 would help. I have a bunch of red maps that get me decent experience, might as well run em.

I also finally got enough high level parts to run a maxed out Metamorph, uh, thing in Tane's lab, and I got... nothing. Is there no special reward or anything for that? I mean, I got the drops, but... that's it. I'm pretty disappointed, but I'll keep doing it, I guess.

I'm at 140 depth in the mines. This is still my favorite part of the game. Hoping I can get to 200 for the max level.

Just about wasted one hour and eight minute... as I tried to save the game it crashed with an "unknown error"... luckily I had only arrived to Paris... I think that's around level five or six in this... bit tedious game (you seriously get tired of Bartok the Bat after a little while).

Oh well... now that I know where the things are I need to get (and where to avoid the minions) I might give it another go and see if I can finish the game...

-----

So... I just gave it another try and... the level where I decided to save last time turned up to be the final level... can you believe it? I spend one hour and then it crashes - and then I speedrun the game in 30 minutes...

The game itself... cute, but not very entertaining.

Still making (very slow) progress through this one. I just stepped foot on the fourth floor, which means my characters will probably be getting one-shotted by a new monster soon. At the rate I'm going I don't know if I'll finish this year. cry

It's quite a bit different than I expected - I did not know enemy avoidance was going to be such a large part of the experience. Also unusual is that there seems to be a lot of grinding for money rather than xp. The equipment is very expensive and inn costs go up every time your characters gain levels. At least I finally figured out that one-way secret passages become two-way after you pass through them.

I definitely need to start a different game on the side this week, my sanity needs a break.

More racing and crashing and stealing cars for myself. Love this game, but it can get a bit repetitive after a while. Doesn't help that the city proper has most of the challenges, but many of them end up out by the windfarm or the ranch, which then takes you further out so you have to drive back in. If more challenges were added out in the rural area that would greatly help.

Bouncing around between games. This badly needs a remaster. The frame rate and controls are rough as guts.

I'm doing the Tuchanka missions.

Eve died. Talked Mordin down. I thought I would have to kill him but no. Nice to be a sneaky liar for a change.
Main missions are noticeably better than some of the side missions.

Renegade Femshep looking particularly badass in the Cerberus Armour.

On Rudy's recommendation, I finally started this total conversion mod for Skyrim. It starts in a very creepy manner, and then there's a whole lot of "Oops, you're unconscious, and wake up somewhere else", which is annoying but I'm guessing stops after a while. Like Gothic, at the beginning even the most basic wolf enemies can kill you, but between my fire spell and my healing spell, I'm basically good until I run out of magic. Looks like a buncha talent trees, of which 3 are mine -- er, I mean, Mage.

I started playing Bioshock Remastered this week. I tried it once, years ago, but back then, my laptop was not up to the task of running the game so I didn't get far into it.

I've always been a big fan of "immersive sim" games (e.g. System Shock, Deus Ex, Dishonored, etc.), so I've always wanted to go back and play this. So far, it seems a lot more linearly designed than other immersive sims, but I'm still really enjoying it. The underwater art-deco aesthetics, and the exploration of a theoretical Laissez-faire Objectivist utopia, transformed into a dystopian late-stage-capitalist hellscape, make the game pretty unique and interesting. The Pipe Mania "hacking" minigame is weird, though.

Still can't stop playing game after game of this. Last night I broke a promise to myself and stayed up much too late in order to finish a game.

I played as a new-to-me nation, Erytheia. It's a coastal nation, so its main troops are all amphibious (poor amphibians--meaning they don't fight so well underwater--but amphibians nevertheless). And inbreeding has caused problems, so some of their commanders go insane now and then.

I was up against C'tis and Abysia. I thought the latter would be my main rival, since I ran into them first. But C'tis beat them back and ultimately eliminated them. Meanwhile, I claimed the ocean, even though it was off to one side and not worth much, and then expanded southward from my capital.

Halfway down the map, I started encountering huge C'tisian armies--twice the size of mine, some of them. That didn't bode well. But my scouts told me they were mostly militia and other cannon fodder, and that turned out to be mostly right. My mid-tier units didn't have much problem usually. The enemy numbers were just scary.

I piled all my force together. Even my pretender god and prophet were in the same big "stack of doom." I worked my way down into C'tis territory while they were busy finishing off Abysia. I stormed C'tis (the capital) itself and then took a nearby throne.

After that, it was just a matter of getting to the third and final throne (the first was in my own territory, and I'd claimed that early on). It was on an island in another sea besides the one I'd conquered. So I captured the surrounding water provinces and then spent several months (turns) gathering enough amphibious units for the assault.

Took the place on the first try, claimed the throne next turn, and won.

The amphibious units of Erytheia came in handy, I must say. And their insane leaders weren't too much of a hassle; they'd just refuse to obey my orders and insist on doing their own thing for a turn, and next turn they'd be normal again. One time an insane prophet insisted on claiming a throne of ascension, so I just shrugged and said, "That's what I wanted you to do anyway." Another time, one went on a blood hunt; that was a little embarrassing, since our people didn't use blood slaves, but the wayward commander didn't find any anyway. The insanity bit reminded me of Darkest Dungeon.

Nintendo "sort of" broke a cardinal rule I have about gaming...
Don't put content to be unlocked behind hard stuff!

double-nested spoiler system. First is the context. Next is specifics....
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Starting off in Dark Side/kingdom
Spoiler (click to reveal)
You have to fight ALL four Broodals again, as well as them in their final form when they assemble into that gigantic, bipedal robot (last fought prior to the final battle, with Bowser)
THERE ARE NO CHECKPOINTS ON ANY OF THESE!! Due to that, I spent probably an hour on this portion alone!

O1H, the rest of this kingdom's content only gets unlocked if you beat these baddies. NO, FREAKING, CHECK/SAVE POINTS! Except for 1 heart, no refills on life! angry

OTOH, we've already beat the game, so this is optional content. Also, additional moons have been unlocked in the first 14 Kingdoms. Last but not least, as someone who's good at Nintendo games, but not a "super expert", persistence and "stick-to-it-ness" did pay off.

.

This ended up being a "mini-session" report on the actual battle with them rabbit Broodals. Also ended up spilling some strategies...
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I kind of wish I had the amiibo that gives you free hearts. OTOH, I did learn a lot... You only have 3 health points, so you absolutely cannot afford to take hits recklessly.

I liked for pacing, the one broodal that gave me troubles was the first one (he's the green one with up to 16 hats, spin attacks with them). A "get him out of the way" type feeling

2nd one: the female who throws explosive mines at you that creates fire puddles... you learn how to deal with all of her attacks with very low to garuanteed no hits taken. Even found it if you can anticipate, with good timing, you can beat her sooner than later, bypassing many of those attack sequences

FOR THE FIRST TWO where you need to stomp on them as they run around, either jump ahead of time when they're about to lose their protective hat, or stun them by throwing your own. If you jump immediately after throwing, you'll hit them before they can run off again

3rd broodal: the one that vomits poising purple liquids all over... this one was actually a treat. I realized I can take him down swiftly. Thus, not having to worry about taking damage

4th broodal: throws hats that gets converted to trampolines if you hit them with your own hat. Stun his hat or 2, and make sure you time your jumps to be on top of his head (I may have ran into him instead, taking damage. Hard to tell from the camera angle), and that his hats don't boomerang back to him when you try to stomp him.

Final attempt, beat all 4 with only 1 hit taken!
Went into the next battle with full health since they do throw you a bone/heart

"Broodal-tron": You take control of a hammer bros. vs. this, so it's much easier to fight vs. having to flight the bombs back at it vs. the original battle. I seriously would've raged if I died here, after being soo close!

In addition to that...
Wrapped up a few Power Moons during my revisit to Sand Kingdom. One Power Moon involved a lot of trial and error. 20 minutes worth in fact! Here's a link to a video of someone else doing it for reference....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDIk5WY_6yM

.

Next, we went to Dark Side (Kingdom)!

Yeah, the difficulty is approaching nightmare-ish levels (if not actually so. Dunno if it'll get even worse. There's yet another kingdom after this, so probably yes). A few levels required some mad skillz... being very quick with no margin for error. Being precise with your jumps. Being both quick and precise. One moon was bearable b/c stuff I collected gets saved after I die, so it made it easier on subsequent plays. Some levels, I had no idea what I was supposed to do! wow I actually did not get the moons for quite a few of them! Although I had to call it quits soon at this point, even having ample time, I still would've needed considerably more attempts than your usual moons.

Back when I started and through 50% to beating the game, I was delusional in entertaining that I could get ALL the moons. Now, I'll probably settle for 80% to 98% of them. If there's a special reward for getting all of them, I'll just look up online to see what that ends up being.

played 1.5 hours

Wrapped up Dark Side as much as I feasible could. There were a couple of Moons I'd like to come back to later, as I'd feel they'd eat up too much time, making me go crazy. Let's either explore new areas, or get lower hanging fruit first.

.

Darker Side....

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Yeah this is meant to be some "ultimate level". I attempted it a few tries, but for now... PASS. I'll want to revisit levels with the horizontal poles, as there's one part where you need to have mastery over them given you're timed!

I'll add some fluff to throw off those trying to form deductions from the size of the spoiler

blah
blah
blah

.

Sand Kingdom revisited

I figured I already unlocked the extra moons on this one, so may as well go in-depth starting back from here. Should go in order though, so next one will be Cap kingdom (first 1).

Played 3 hours

Wrapped up Sand kingdom. Which isn't to say we 100% it. We still got 12 moons to go. One I can't find even with Toad marking it on my map. The other one requires quite some dexterity that it's no longer "low hanging fruit".

Finished this with 97 of 100 purple coins!

.

Back to Cap kingdom to try to get as many moons here as possible. Only got a few before we were done for the night.

.

Really do like how after you beat Bowser, the kingdoms have changed. It's reminiscent of previous Mario games where if you have the option to replay levels after beating the game, you see the same sort of changes.

Here, they're in terms of gameplay...
Spoiler (click to reveal)
It's mostly new moons now available to collect

.... and non-gameplay...
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Sand kingdom has tourists, who comprise of characters from many of the other kingdoms (Lake, Wooded, Metro, Snow, Seaside)

Cap kingdom has a flight of hat-shaped flying vehicles taking to the skies, and the place has an "airport" feel to it.

played 3 hours

Finished up Cap kingdom (revisited) as much as I could. Pretty close. 2 Moons short. Despite paying for Toad's hints to mark where they are on the map, and the parakeet telling me the names of those moons, I'm STILL stumped. Didn't want to idle too long, but still not ready to look these up online, so I moved on. Also, short 4 purple coins.

I wanted to see how we get rewarded if we got ALL moons. So I instead went back to Ruined kingdom since it's a "flyover kingdom". Managed to get all moons! cool They put a gold star next to your moon count was that "reward". Not worth the hype I put myself through, but from experience, I wasn't surprised

Went back to Cloud kingdom and started on my revisit here.

Played 1.5 hours

Cloud kingdom is another "flyover kingdom" so finished that quickly

Continued with Cascade kingdom, and halfway through the moons here (including with the extras). Did manage to find all purple coins!

TOTAL time played this week: 12 hours
RUNNING GRAND TOTAL: 58

Well, I guess Kimahri is one of the elites now despite being level 1 having been level 1, but now boosted to 50. While cycling through the listing of available draws to see if any new ones had popped up since I last got a bunch of free ones, I managed to accidentally tap the button for the 10+1 item draw and "Yes" instead of "No" right after, then got his EX weapon in the set.

I finally managed to kill of Kitava and finish the main story line with my Ice Shot Ranger.

Now I'm in the maps endgame, but this also means, that dying means loosing 10% of my current XP. Against bosses, you are quickly down to zero prgress, especially with a squishy ranged char. Feels like a long way to the higher level maps.
