Some Halo 4 Spartan Ops first, then ODST, then probably Reach. Daughter has never completed Spartan Ops (which I completely enjoyed, bite size co-op missions that tell a little bit of story after the main game) and wants to go achievement hunting in ODST and has not played Reach all the way though.

Good stuff.

First, the Humble Choice for May 2020 is out and I took a closer look at the choices in my ongoing GEEKLIST.

I'm still playing Reventure. I like the very simple pixel graphics. The game has a good sense of humour and it's addictive discovering all 100 endings. And there's no other real end to the game than discovering all of them. So be completionist or abandon, nothing in between. I now played it for more than 10 hours and I experienced 78 of the 100 endings. It's getting more and more difficult to find new ones. I unlocked a map with some hints and the game gives slight clues what to do. But the simple endings are done. The ones available now need some preparation and often involve carrying items across the map to get something, then back to get the ending. And that's if you have an idea what to do. I suppose I'll consult a guide latest when I got the 80th ending.

Following Reventure, I plan to play Gris. It looks great and should be a pleasant intermezzo before moving back to larger games.

I've accepted that puzzle games have become semi-theraputic for me during this whole 'global pandemic' that is underway, and figured it would be a good time for me to jump back into the Professor Layton series.

I played the original game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, over a decade ago. I remember being charmed by it, as basically everyone was, but also feeling like you had to put up with some tomfoolery. I had hoped to see some incremental improvement in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, but instead felt that they had made the same game a second time, with a slightly less interesting story & premise, and slightly less pretext when it came to plausibly weaving puzzles into the narrative (not that the first game was super good at this, but I think it probably tried harder than all of its sequels). I don't think I played more than half of The Diabolical Box before just drifting away. As the series became better known, I think even dedicated fans saw a lot of truth in the timeless PennyArcade strip.

External image

There are six of these games - 7 if you count Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright, and 8 if you count the "Layton Stories" or whatever. I didn't especially want to replay the original, or restart Diabolical Box. Since the first three games form a 'trilogy' of sorts, and the second three games form a prequel trilogy, I started with The Last Specter.

It's exactly what I expected: A 4th Layton game supremely loyal to the template of the original. Telltale fans will know what I'm talking about - a developer that just stays in a holding pattern until nobody cares anymore.

The characters & setting are charming as usual, the puzzles are fun but also have all the usual caveats. You have variety (good) but also the occasional puzzle-type that doesn't interest you at all. A lot of puzzles give you a prompt that you have to "work through" in your head. Usually, puzzle games are based on in-the-moment manipulation & action, but the Professor Layton games aren't afraid to say: here's a conundrum, you figure it out. Lastly, the Layton games might be the only piece of media I've ever encountered that seem to glorify and exalt the 'trick question' as a genre. Many of these puzzles aren't puzzles at all in the typical sense - instead the puzzle is the wording of the prompt. The game is often just asking you to figure out how a puzzle is defined, rather than defining one for you and asking you to solve it.

I'm enjoying this, but I'm pretty sure this whole series is under-punching on design and over-punching on charm.

Started this today and played for about an hour, just past the point where you have a pet helping you out in exchange for apples.

I'm not sure why I keep giving games like this a chance. There is a little more interactivity than other minimalist games like Journey and Abzu, but because this is supposed to be about dealing with the aftermath of a trauma (so the Steam store page tells me), simple jumping puzzles don't really give the impression of a mental or emotional struggle.

It looks nice though, and the music is fitting of the artwork.

I started and finished Hyper Light Drifter in the last week. It strikes a pretty good balance of difficulty, and definitely didn't overstay its welcome.

I've heard great things about Outer Wilds, so picked it up on PS4 (it's currently 25% off, and not available on Steam due to Epic Game Store exclusivity). So far I'm pretty lost and don't know what I'm supposed to be doing, but that's about what I expected going in to it. One thing I've learned since playing is that Outer Wilds isn't really a game about finding the answers; it's a game that requires you to find the questions, and then find the answers. I have no idea what will constitute "beating" the game, if such a thing exists. I'm sure that I will eventually run dry on visible threads -- even now, I'm spending upwards of an hour without feeling like I'm discovering anything new, or at least not finding anything that feels to be of any importance or significance.

One thing that has definitely impressed me so far, is the feeling of exploring space (as in zero-gravity relative-frame-of-reference navigation). I can't go into too many details (this is the sort of game that, as I'm told, it best to go into with minimal knowledge upfront), but the space travel is an interesting experience in many ways so far (due in no small part to the fact that I rarely gravitate toward sci-fi games).

I also started Gears of War 3 for the Oracles challenge -- so far it's giving me a better feeling than did GoW or GoW 2.

I don't recall so many Witcher contracts being such high level.
Level 12 now, and many of these monster chases are level 20 or higher.

Still having a lot of fun uncovering ?'s in Velen.

Found my favorite armor. It's a long red coat. It looks badass. I've sold a few pieces of armor that have better stats, because they don't look as cool. I'll suffer in fashion.

This is one of few games I recall with choices having such drastic changes in the story.

Got the original arcade version on the PS4.

Forgot how grueling it is. Quarters are now infinite, but still quite a challenge. Not ready to commit to completeing the journey just yet.

Continuing with this, though I've come to a boring stall. I've got this quest that I can accept but with the caveat that "all current quests will be forfeit" or something – and I don't know if they mean ALL of them, or just the Wyrm Hunt quests (3 or something) that I have all completed.

So now I'm like "wow, so I should spend time hunting down 20 boars, 25 crows and do silly things, because all these quests will be cancelled if I accept to meet the duke?

And I still can't find decent clothes for my pigtail kid sorceress. Why is everything I find either voluptous huge robes or silly tight leather or sexay a(r)mour. Where're the skirts or or just normal dresses? I don't want to run arount in the princess outfit, it looks silly, but pu-lease, why are there leather laced leggings, but not normal skirt? And all the pants make her look as if she had The Package.

STILL plugging away at FH2. Since you pretty much have... *does some quick calculation* 8 x... 12? x...carry the 2.... 400.... About 400 BAGILLION championships to win.

Won two more last night. (Yes, I know I could probably boost the difficulty but I have it set about right for me.)

Still a lot of fun, though.

But starting to look at all the other games I still have to play. I picked this one back up pretty easily enough. Maybe I should put it to rest again....

after the NEXT Horizon Finale!

After winning an overly-long-as-usual game of Civ V yesterday, I did a couple hours of yard work and got pretty tired. So, after a refreshing shower, I felt like playing something quick and easy. Of all things, I picked Dom 5.

But it worked. I played on the smallest random map, against just one opponent. And everything went my way. Don't think I lost a single battle. Also, my dominion (I had it up to level 7, the highest I've played at) spread like wildfire.

I was going for the three thrones, but two were in the far corners of the map. Just after I claimed the second throne, the game abruptly ended. Enemy dominion had been snuffed out within two years of war.

I started a game this morning, and I'm playing on Easy this time, as the new mod has proven hard to get used to. I played a lot of MoM back in the day, and off and on ever since, but some of my tried-and-true moves don't work in CoM.

I thought it was cool that you start out with a couple settlers and swordsmen. One of my complaints about the original game was that it had such a slow start, and the mod certainly fixes that. However, your opponents start out the same way, and before you know it you've got enemies at your doorstep. Not sure I like that.

Builds are faster in the mod too. Seems like I used to wait forever just to build a Builder's Hall and then a Granary; now those early-game essentials pop up fast. And it makes me feel like I can spend some time building military units and more settlers.

And I guess I'd better, because the AI players are building and deploying more rapidly than before. Also, there are fewer unguarded treasure sites, and some neutral cities are strongly defended. So it's necessary to build an army pretty early.

In the old MoM, I used to cruise around the map with magic spirits; and when I'd find a lightly guarded site or city, I'd barge in and use my Confusion spell (repeatedly if necessary) to get the defenders fighting each other. Eventually the last defender would get confused enough to join me, and I'd take over. That doesn't work anymore. Now I'd have to fight the last unit, and it's usually a losing proposition.

Anyway, after several turns I've got three cities already and am about to build a fourth. But enemy outposts are crowding my expansion in two of the three directions I can go before crossing the sea.

One thing I always liked about MoM was finding ways to peacefully expand for a long while before having to deal with war. I'm not sure that's possible in CoM. Already it's looking like I'll have to attack somebody just to establish my own living space. And I generally hate 4X games that force the player to be belligerent from the start.

In the old MoM, I could also knock out enemy outposts without triggering war. That was a useful tactic. If an outpost had been built but was not garrisoned, I could attack with a magic spirit (or anything) and automatically raze the outpost. So I'd have my magic spirits hang out in enemy territory to slow their expansion. Can't do that anymore because (1) the attack would trigger war and (2) outposts are usually, if not always, garrisoned from the start.

The changes I've seen so far do seem more "realistic," and I like that about them. I'm also glad the game is a lot less buggy than before. But I'll have to see if I can find a setup that gives me a chance to expand and solidify my empire before bumping into rivals. I reduced the standard number of opponents from four to three; maybe I should try playing against just one opponent.

Terraforming my island is never completely finished (though I think I am finally satisfied with "the water spiral: v3" portion). I've been trying to herd rocks, but not actually knowing where I want it defeats the purpose of actively herding because the answer strangely isn't "the areas I didn't block off". laugh

I have yet to get around to doing the May Day ticket thing so I should do that soon...

EDIT:
I re-organized the area by the front of my town. In doing so, the shop got pushed farther left (further away from the gate) and I didn't like it being farther from my house so ended up moving my house too. Didn't realize it's only 30k to move your house which is nice.

Finally did the May Day ticket Thursday night. It was an amusing 15 minutes. Glad I didn't forget to do it.

Villagers threw a birthday party for me this morning. It feels like the most elaborate one yet, was very cool.

Been debating what to play next since I got to Ch. 5 in Tales of Legendia.

I ended up starting this one today even though I was kinda intimidated to start such a long game.

I went and looked up the protagonist's name since I had no ideas and this game doesn't come with a suggestion. Ended up using the name from the manga.

Went and explored Tartarus for the first time and got my 2nd Persona (Pixie).

28 hours in with my adventurer who doesn't buy seeds, (continuing from last week).

I am now partway into my first Winter, and I just completed all the community projects via my Joja membership. I had a small area where I was throwing any mixed seeds, ancient seed, or museum reward seeds, but now that my greenhouse is fixed, I am going to plant everything in there and have no outdoor farming at all. The Joja membership seems a lot easier to complete than the community center bundles, though it doesn't give the small and mostly pointless rewards along the way, and it also doesn't improve any NPC relationships when finished. All you get (besides the community projects done) is a free Joja cola vending machine.

For money, I get some from my duck/dinosaur mayo, some from random plants found and harvested, and the most comes from fishing or loot from Skull Cavern. Occasionally I'll have really good foraging days, too, finding >1000g worth of stuff around my forest farm. 'Geologist' has turned out to be a very profitable profession, often giving double geodes and double gems.

Humble Classic/Choice members who activated their May games were given a preview copy of Fae Tactics as a bonus download.

Fae Tactics is a game that has been on my radar for a couple of months because it's a tactical RPG like Final Fantasy Tactics / Disgaea.

The game is about a girl named Peony who is a human who can use magic (which is very rare in this world). She has befriended two Fae creatures, a dog like Fae name Chico, and a bird like Fae named Payachin. Chico is a fast attack type Fae who is great for combo attacks. Payachin attacks with a ranged water attack which is great against enemies weak to water, as well as ones hiding behind barricades.

I've played through 3 battles so far, and the game plays quite well. It has a feature called "menuless combat", so you aren't constantly opening menus to select Move, Attack, Magic, etc. It plays similar to Fire Emblem in that respect. When it's one of your character's turns, you can select a move spot, an enemy, or an ally, and it'll either move, attack, or assist. If you attack an enemy within range of another ally, they'll add in a combo attack, which is very satisfying.

I'm not sure when the full game is going to release (hopefully 2020), but I'm definitely enjoying the demo.

20. Video Game: Nom Nom Galaxy [Average Rating:5.47 Unranked]
Video Game: Nom Nom Galaxy
For PC/Steam

My flavor portfolio is now at 57 out of 80 recipes to unlock the next sector/zone/"world". Also beat 3 levels or so in the campaign.

Interesting dilemma as you play the game:
You can strive to just pass the level
Or you can strive discover new recipes

The former means you get down to brass tacks and finish a level ASAP. "No prisoners". However, this means deviating from that 'directive' (including building soup machines for discovering "off flavors", and exploring some of the level's side quests), could as worse, prolong the game for quite a lot of time. At worst, you may lose the level.

The latter means you get that warm fuzzy feeling filling out your 20x20 recipe grid, which also has the game play function of unlocking new zones. AFAIK, you can revisit levels you've played, but you actually need to finish the level for the newly discovered soup flavors to count?

.

Had an interesting bug where the game just froze. AFAIK, this is when you build corridors past the top of the screen via the "stamp feature" (instead of going into the build menu, select a corridor, and placing it on the map, and then repeating those 3 steps again, you can use this feature to skip having to repeat the first 2 steps). My workaround to avoid building off screen seems to be working. Interestingly enough:
+my progress is normally saved (every Day)
+my # of recipes is also saved

However:
-Soup recipes I've discovered get reset from my chart
Hopefully, I'm not able to "double dip", where I'll end up with something like discovering all 404 out of 400 recipes! wow

Beat a few more levels. One of them took an hour.. or 2? That's how much "in the zone" I was in, and how much time I lost track of. I play with a clock in front of me, but failed to note when I started playing.

Another classic case of discovering too many recipes, so I kinda stalled on a level (did discover like, 10 of them). More to discover, but had a level to pass, so I found a spot I could farm Corn Bugs, and did just that. Two double-corn soup processing machines + 4 rockets at top = this game's equivalent of brute force. Quantity over quality if you will. I think I'll replay this level to rediscover a few more recipes, and to play with my now toy.. Exploding Jack Robot, which can actually remove the hard, solid walls! cool

Yet more adventures in "unable to pick a game and stick to it". For some reason I got a hankering to start another game of King's Bounty: The Legend, so I started up a paladin on Normal.

For as addictive as I find the combat, the game moves very slowly -- often getting into a new area will involve a few battles against very similar opposition, without much progression to change any of the battle dynamics. On the one hand, this does mean that you can't just barge into a new area and war-of-attrition everything for a couple of battles to get through it. But at least on Normal I have a definite feeling that I'm fighting a sequence of similar, mostly easy, battles, just to clear the map. The XP is at some level important, too, since it contributes to progression eventually. But I'm also still fairly constrained by the available variety of units.

That having been said, although I was toting around a stack of my normal Bears for a while, I'm now running a mostly-human army (Swordsmen, Guardsmen, Bowmen, Priests) with Royal Snakes for initial damage. I've cleared out a bunch of the low-level stuff in Greenwort and Arlania, and am working on Verlon Forest. There was also a fairly disastrous expedition into Marshan Swamp where I completed a number of quests and was faring well enough against the normal inhabitants, but got roped into a castle siege that I wasn't really prepared for and that cost me almost my entire army. I also went to fight the first boss, which was almost certainly a mistake given how much of my (rebuilt) army it killed. I'm no longer completely broke, but it's going to be a little while before I'm looking to get on with the story.

I still don't understand how to use level-1 units, even with Resurrection -- it feels like keeping the stack topped up is just too expensive in terms of MP. On the other hand, right now level-4 and level-5 stuff feels mostly ineffectual because I get to have about 4 of them in a stack.

In any case, I'm going to try to avoid the endless tedium of rezzing my entire army in every fight that my mage game on Hard has devolved into, assuming that this foray even lasts long enough for that to be a possibility.

and his wife. I myself hadn't played the game for some weeks now, but yesterday Rudy and I teamed up and created new characters.

This time, I chose a Warlock, a melee centered spellcaster, while Rudy was taking the new Witch Hunter from the sametitled DLC for a drive, that I had gifted to him earlier.

Three times we ventured into the dungeons and all three times we managed to get to Act 3, were we eventually succumbed to the high amount of ranged minions. But we certainly had a blast. Especially the 3rd run had us feel like overpowered heroes, although we barely stayed alive.

By coincidence I stumbled upon a livestream of Jon Sandman (a Rocket League streamer) playing some Jackbox games via stream.

My last interaction with Jack games must have been "You don't know Jack 2" so I was intreagued to see that Jon played this game online, with the viewers of his stream playing as "the audience", a virtual player.

Participating in this, even just as a member of the audience was pretty fun.

I'm all over the place with games now. I got to a tough spot in Age of Wonders III: Eternal Lords, so I put it on hold until I feel psyched for it. I started playing Master of Magic: Caster of Magic and got a ways into it. But then I started into Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith; finished one game and started another. Last night, I ran out of mental energy for that game, and I should've gone to bed, but instead I started a game of Civ V.

I picked a duel game on Prince level, hoping for an easy, relaxing time. I'm playing as Siam, and my random opponent turned out to be Carthage.

Had some barbarian problems for a long time, carelessly losing two settlers to them. But eventually I got my military units up there and recaptured the settlers, then built cities. My people became unhappy, but not enough so to rebel. Happiness recovered in time.

Then I saw a bunch of Carthaginian units heading my way--past two city-states and toward my capital. I guessed we weren't going to be friends anymore. This is the point where, in Civ IV, I'd have seriously considered quitting, because my civ would soon be wholly or partially conquered. But this was Civ V, so I felt pretty confident even though I was greatly outnumbered (about four or five to one).

I just switched to building military units (and bought one). My two or three existing units fought well and took some enemies down, but all except one died. Thanks to built-in city defense (and even without walls), the enemy invasion was broken after several turns. By then, I had only two units, but I used them to pursue a retreating enemy unit, kill it, and advance all the way to Carthage. Then Dido sued for peace and gave me some luxury goods in the bargain. My units took out a barbarian encampment and returned home.

The way I play Civ, it's not a very challenging or exciting game, but it's pleasant, and stories like the one above develop during play. I like that. I think I like sleep more, though, so I wish I'd gone to bed on time instead of staying up to play this game.
