Rude with a lot of switching between Cloud and Aerith, and wind magic linked with the elemental weapon effect for Aerith so each of her magic missiles was more effective.

I also got the nail bat for Cloud, but it doesn't seem worth using for the critical hits.

Last night I finished the From Ashes DLC. My memory was that it might as well be a very expensive particle rifle (best assault rifle in the game, awarded for finishing the mission). I still think that's about right: the mission itself is just a badly constructed throwaway with a dumb new character attached to it.

That gave me enough money to buy the Black Widow at the Specter Requisitions terminal on the Citadel. I saved beforehand, bought it, used it a bit at the shooting range, googled a bit of hard-data about its damage output, and very quickly NOPED and reloaded my save. Pretty sure this game is extremely unkind to slow RoF and even less kind to heavy loadouts. Going forward will be using the Raptor, which is basically a hybrid between a Sniper Rifle and an Assault Rifle. Guns are completely secondary to powers in this game.

There's some good stuff in here, like EDI and Joker's ongoing relationship, but there's a lot of dead weight. I'm wondering if I'm at a point where, in the long haul, I'll just spare myself trudging through the end of the trilogy. To even enjoy ME3 you have to pretend a lot of the first two games didn't happen, otherwise you're just swimming in internal contradictions and inconsistencies. The Reaper threat is so badly handled here. One minute, they move with all swiftness and can't be engaged with conventional weapons; the next minute, it will take a century or longer for them to conquer the universe. One minute, we're remembering how an entire fleet of warships barely took down a single Reaper in ME1; the next minute, we're talking about millions of Krogan foot-soldiers as though they have any practical relevance.

Level design is inconsistent from a combat perspective and indefensible from an exploration/rewards perspective. Combat on Palavin: a big snooze-fest. Combat on Sur'Kesh: pretty good.

We all know that ME3 was rushed through development and released in a sorry state, but some of the priorities on display are incredible. The first time you go to Purgatory, Aria's new bar on the Citadel that evokes her bar on Omega from ME2, it makes an incredible impression visually and aesthetically. And it's all just a single "hey, remember Aria" moment, all just a 5 minute callback to an infinitely better game. But they poured in development resources and craft and polish. And then you play Palavin and think, WTF is this garbage? Or, consider how often ME games could use a bit of extra dialogue and voice-acting between important characters, and then consider that they paid someone to read f***ing codex entries in this game.

At least this game recognizes how much fans enjoyed communicating with Admiral Hackett in ME1. That's the level of consolation you get here.

Chugging along with my parks. Today, I started on the fifth and last island of the campaign, Isla Sorna. I completed all missions on each of the previous islands and reached five stars on all of them except for the very first one. Once I complete Isla Sorna, I might go back to the starting island to reach the perfect star rating.

At times, things get stressful and one time I ran my park into the ground early on when it's most vulnerable. A storm struck and freed all my predators which turned on my visitors who didn't have any shelters to run to yet. Consecutively, I lost money every minute and wasn't able to repair or buy anything anymore with more than a million $ of debt. But this was an exception and generally, getting the economy running and achieving the targets isn't too challenging. Once your park has reached maturity, disasters will be annoying to handle but won't be a threat to your success anymore.

The meat of the game are the dinosaurs and their management. Enclosures will need most of the available building space and have to be planned carefully. Not all dinosaurs are compatible and they have different requirements. Mixing carnivores with selected herbivores is possible but at the same time some carnivores shouldn't be mixed with other carnivores. A few dinosaurs are a pain to handle such as the T-Rex who can't stand any other T-Rex or most other dinosaurs except for the really large herbivores. Nonetheless, my T-Rex was killed by a Ceratosaurus who proved to be a real beast and single-handedly provided a third of the target dinosaur rating for the whole park due to his notoriety for killing off other dinos. Velociraptors as all other small herd carnivores can get very annoying when the horde escapes from the enclosure. I found a few favourite dinos which feature a good tradeoff between manageable requirements and good ratings.

Jurassic World: Evolution is what I want from a builder. It's casually playable and doesn't need studies to get a grip on it like e.g. Cities Skylines or Planet Coaster. It's comparable to Anno 2205 which fans of the Anno series consider a dumbed down version but which I liked the most. At the same time, Jurassic World provides a story to give me a target to work towards with the campaign. Building nice things isn't a motivation in itself for me which is why I have zero interest in Planet Coaster or Planet Zoo.

I got Jurassic World from last month's Humble Choice. This month's bundle just came out and a few thoughts on it can be found here.

A bit buggy. Disappointing that five years later they haven't been cleaned up. Mutliple conversations where I meet the stat check are still blocked off to me. Some issues with murky game mechanics linger. Cyberware that boosts stats doesn't allow the player to upgrade further down stats, they have to have that naturally. This could be made clear.

Overall a good game. And if you want a video game version of Shadwrun outside of heading back to the fourth generation there aren't many options.

Won the Championship.

This has been some good fun. I like how all the characters have different stats and can level up some abilities. It's a bit frightening that your players that you get to know and love can die.

Continuing to play this. I got my Redguard Greatsword Stamina Templar up to level 18 and was dying a lot. I think Stamina builds might be harder to pull off in solo. Dying can suck too. I liked the first two islands of the Daggerfall Covenant line quite a bit, but Glenumbra not so much.

I also have a Altmer Destruction Magicka Sorceror at level 7 or so. She is much easier to play, having a summon helps, plus better heal and buff and debuff. Still on the first Altmeri Dominion island (Khenarthi's Roost) which is growing on me.

The game is pretty good, but lacks the majesty of Skyrim. It actually feels and looks a lot like Dragon Age Inquisition.

Built an arena to fight the mechanical bosses. Now I am trying to spawn a hollow mimic chest that has a 25% chance to drop a special bow when killed. But to craft the mimic, I need to farm the Hollow for souls of light to make the special candle. Once I get the bow, I am going to try for the Destroyer first.

Edit: Got the bow.

Edit 2: Beat the Destroyer thrice. Now on to the Twins.

Edit 3: Beat the Twins once I learned to keep on running. Then tried Skeletron Prime and beat him too. Off to explorer the jungle again.

Edit 4: Prepping for the battle with Plantera.

Edit 5: Took out Plantera easily with Chlorophyte Shotbow and a little over 100 Holy arrows. Now on to the temple and the Golem.

Edit 6: Changed my computer date to December to launch the frost moon even. Then I crafted a naughty present, fought a few waves until I killed a robo-santa, which dropped a chain gun. I plan to use that with heat seeking chlorophyte bullets to take out the rest of the bosses.

I'm finally playing Xenoblade Chronicles: Remastered! Oh man, what a messy combat system. I've read the tutorials and tried seeking some guides online but I don't really know how I should be playing the game in combat. It seems to be the case that enemies are either trivially easy (just spam your Arts, or even just sit there and use your auto-attack), or too difficult -- eg. there was an enemy in a cave that was around my level, but despite multiple attempts, and multiple approaches trying to improve on my shortcomings, it really just came down to the fact that my characters' levels were too low.

Chain attacks seem to be the key for bosses and mini-bosses -- but when I do one, I'm given the choice of up to 9 different Arts from each of my allies, and I realize I don't know what any of them do since I've been playing primarily as Shulk. Unfortunately the game won't show me any info about them when I'm prompted to choose one, so it will just take some time playing as other characters to figure out what everything does.

Here's a wild opinion -- I think that I'd enjoy the combat against bosses more if it was turn-based. Since it's real-time, and since 2/3rds of my group is AI-controlled, I don't get the chance to stop and think "how should I approach this" or "what would be useful in the current situation" or even "what does this Art do again?".

I've been continuing to play Dicey Dungeons and finished nearly half of the 36 "episodes". I've run into a few situations where I nearly got into a stalemate, or made it impossible for myself to win given the "rules" for a run and my loadout. For instance, I made a super-defensive build for the warrior in the episode where your health decreases when you level up (rather than increases), but then when I faced off against the loud bird, I realized that I only had one attack I could do each turn, and it would almost always be able to activate its "dodge next attack" skill! But I had such a defensive build that there was no way it could deal damage to me. So, it was a lot of waiting and waiting for turns where it rolled all even dice.

I haven't been playing a lot else -- I've been doing a lot of solo tabletop gaming recently.

Ikenfell is a game that I had not heard of before seeing it as a "sneak preview" in the June humble choice offerings. I looked it up, and it is super charming. It's a pixel art RPG where you explore a magic school campus (and possibly other places) for traces of your sister who went missing. It features battles that are tactical in nature, picture tiny little FFT battles with no terrain, but with an added element of timing to make attacks or defense more effective.

So far the demo is very cute and charming, and it jokes about how it throws you into chapter 2. When you want to save your game, you pet sleeping cats which calms you down enough to restore your HP and let you save.

I finished Act I. The game continues to be linear, the combat continues to feel shallow, and the exploration continues to be unrewarding. Most of the time exploring just gets you wordy lore entries, although most of them are interesting enough to be worth reading. Occasionally you get a Raw Mascharine, which doesn't feel like a reward at all since the game doesn't give me the means of decorating them yet.

I came close to abandoning at one point on a boss encounter (the Triplets) that seemed unnecessarily difficult. My two AI-controlled companions got knocked out of the fight and I might have been able to finish it on my own until I noticed the enemies were healing faster than I could damage them. Instead of abandoning I turned down the difficulty to Story and am just accepting the fact that this game is probably best approached as a visual novel rather than a true RPG.

Last night I got sucked in by a "mega-sale coupon" and bought the most recent upgrade/expansion package for Civ VI. Now I have it all, and I'm playing around, trying to learn how the new version of the game works.

I thought I'd hate the natural disasters, but I don't. I have cities on flood plains and one next to a volcano, and I'm getting by OK.

Religion is complicated, and I tend to forget about it. In the game I'm playing, Brazil sent over waves of Catholic missionaries and apostles, and I didn't pay attention until half my cities were converted. Then he refused to stop, so I declared war. But he's far away on another continent, so it's been purely a war between religious units. I declared an inquisition and managed to clear my cities, but those pesky Catholics are still hanging around.

City districts are complicated too. I'm building them here and there, but I still have only a vague idea how the system works and relates to everything else.

I didn't think there was a World Congress in Civ VI, but I guess it was added back in with one of the expansions. Of course it's more complicated than in Civ V too. I'm just beginning to learn how it works; I've gotten my way a couple times and used it to punish Brazil and benefit me.

Governors are another new thing that took me by surprise. It seems to be yet another way the game encourages city specialization. And I guess that's good, because in past versions of Civ, I never had the discipline to build specialized cities, even though I knew I should.

It's a colorful and interesting time sink. Looks like it'll keep me occupied for a long time.

Still sinking way too much time into Terraria.

I think part of the problem is I started a LARGE world, so have this HUGE amount of space to explore. But thanks to the seed engine (where you can put in other's seeds) I have a few small worlds with great loot that I've explored a bit, so have rocking armor and stuff.

So, Its kind of a waste of time to explore most of the world.

I should just move to a smaller world. Bring all my stuff.

It's funny - I create all these farms for materials to make potions... and then end up never using any of them!

Although I've been "almost done" with Assignment 6 in Atelier Rorona DX for a while now, I wrapped it up yesterday. Some notes, with potential minor spoilers:

The actual main assignment here (defeat or drive off a bunch of Vultures from the Nearby Forest) is trivially easy unless you're way behind on the equipment curve. Even then, it seems like Wild Scent can be used to drive the vultures off (I haven't tried this, though the game did prompt me at one point). It does take up a week or two for travel time, and I otherwise would have no reason to go back to the Forest, so there's that.

Completing all of the optional assignments feels like it needs either NG+ or a detailed guide. Most of them are not so bad, but it's time-consuming to fully explore the Catacombs and Traveler's Way, and the latter in particular punishes wrong turns with lost days (you do get more XP and items from re-visiting areas, but the latter point is somewhat made moot by the fact that inventory space is still pretty limited). I didn't do myself any favors here by forgetting, on the Traveler's Way trip, that I was also supposed to hunt down an optional enemy; a later trip to clean it up took me a dozen days.

The rest of the optional assignments are all cake except for "Use Meteor" -- the recipe for a Meteor is available, but I have not seen one of the ingredients at all. I suspect that it's to be had from the Ster Highlands, which open up midway through this assignment (if you're around at the right time for Cole to tell you about them) and which are seven days away, travel-wise (maybe it's a shorter trip from Traveler's Way or something, making it potentially more efficient as a package deal). It's also possible that the ingredient can be had from the National Mines someplace (maybe at the back of the area that requires a cartful of explosives to get to). After synthesizing the Meteor, one then has to go use it in battle a few times. Suffice to say, this is the first optional request I didn't complete.

The game also introduces "wholesaling" and does a bad job of justifying it. The game presents it as one of the local shopkeepers wanting Rorona to sell goods through her, and one might suppose that this is a way to generate cash flow. It is instead rather the opposite: Rorona can "register" goods that she's synthesized there, and then the shop will periodically restock with whole stacks of identical items for sale, allowing you to turn money into time (that you don't have to spend synthesizing the basics) and valuable trait combinations. Each shop has limited slots for this and will only take goods related to its normal inventory (bombs and whatnot at the weapon shop, food at the cafe, etc.), and further each shop only makes this available once Rorona is sufficiently good friends with the shopkeeper.

A thing that I didn't figure out last time around, though: the sundries store will accept registration of seeds, which means it's actually possible to get a reasonable number of them (last time around I'd long since used the initial supply of them and didn't have time to get to the part of the Catacombs where I turned another one up this game). I'm not sure how useful they'll be for anything, but at least I can experiment a little.

The shops will also wholesale accessories, either the ones normally only available through voucher exchange at the Palace (which are good), or ones Rorona has made herself (which can be even better; I made a fairly stellar Gnardi Ring with some spare time at the end of this term, and now cash is the only thing standing between me and each of my party members having one).

I'm now deep enough into the game to start seeing some scenes that I didn't encounter last time. I have all of my party members' friendship up to the point where adventuring won't raise it further, with the exceptions of Lionela (who's very close) and Tantris (who needs more work). I've been optimizing for this a bit, but it'll be nice to get back to using Cordelia (who long since hit the threshold) and Esty (who, I gather, wasn't playable in the original game, and who doesn't even become available as a party member until side quests have pushed her friendship level up to that limit anyway).

Pamela also got to open her shop, which sells some useful stuff. I look forward to her continuing to troll Rorona by requesting pairs of items that take four or five days to synthesize.

I'd say that I was on top of the money curve, but that was before I reinvested in a bunch of accessories. I haven't yet had to really pick and choose whose friendship I'm trying to concentrate on boosting. Also, my town approval rating is up near 90%; I guess I'll get to see whether there's a hard cap at 100.

I remember Assignment 7 as a bit of a break, although I expect to need a bunch of time to explore a couple of distant and confusing areas.

Ran into some fun quests, which brought me back into Witcher love, except...

Some of the DLC enemies are not too well playtested. The plants and centipedes, you can chop right through them, but the game doesn't register those attacks because the enemies are in invincible frame mode. Quite clunky and annoying how many frames you cannot hit them.

Makes to waiting around and dodging, until the game actually lets you play again. I really loathe when games do this. I don't play games to sit around doing nothing, until the game lets you play.

Besides those two annoying enemies, the other quests have been some fun.

The Touissant world should be smaller. Another peeve is travelling through long empty areas to get to the action. Some of the winery quests were way too far apart, with no fast travel points for no reason except padding the game time.

The stories though have been fun, after the initial boring ones. The tournament was a good time. And some other stories were classic.

Crafted a weapon with Lucifer.

Got to lvl 92, 97% of personas registered. Took out Strega again, and all that's left is Nyx. I'm delaying the fight because I heard it is long and want to be able to do it and watch the ending without being interrupted all the time.

I guess I still have that quest to find a rare weapon, but I'm not getting a whole lot of xp in Monad Depths anymore. It's feeling kinda grindy last I was in there trying to find the item for the quest and leveling some personas to get the items from them. I can still fuse Orpheus Telos, but was trying to get the item from Messiah first.

Got this one super cheap. I've been waiting for Need for Speed Heat to come down in price but this was available. I figure it doesn't matter that it's bad because all I want to do is drive around. And it's ok for that. On the other hand, do you need more than one NFS game? Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) was pretty good on the PS3. I supposed it's nice to have one on the PS4.

Also picked up Hatoful Boyfriend: A School of Hope and White Wings but, I don't think I get these visual novel things.

I spent last night running about 100 laps or so at Iowa in the NASCAR Truck, and it helped my confidence a ton. I still have relatively low expectations for how this season will go since many of the folks I'll be racing against have a lot more experience than me, but I think I'll be able to learn a lot in the process. Half the battle is figuring out how to drive the track and get a feel for the vehicle and how things change over the course of a full race.

I practiced in an open session with other drivers last night, and well after most people had disconnected. There was another guy that stayed behind as well, and though we never spoke to each other, I think we had sort of an informal challenge going on to see who could run the fastest lap. I initially did a full 65 lap run (the length of tonight's race) and managed to set the 11th fastest time in the process. The other guy jumped ahead of me with the 10th fastest time, so I started running qualifying style laps to try to beat his time. We both gradually moved up on the leaderboard over the next hour or so. He'd surpass me, then I'd get him back, then he'd surge ahead again. I found it helpful because it encouraged me to experiment with how to get faster. He eventually set the 4th fastest time, and I was stuck in 5th. I thought he had me beat, but I managed to run a slightly faster lap than him right at the end of the session.

The truck I'll be racing tonight

I'll probably hop into an open practice again tonight and run some laps before signing up for the race. My goal is to stay out of trouble and hopefully finish better than where I started. Finishing in the top half of the field would be great. If things go well, I'll start prepping for the ARCA series race at South Boston, which should be quite challenging.

Started up the second game in the Phoenix Wright original trilogy last night. I played up until the first To Be Continued screen, which has basically acted as a tutorial to this point. So far, it seems relatively unchanged from the first game, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Most of my enjoyment will come from the overall story and characters as well as the individual cases. I'm hoping that some of the annoyances I had with its predecessor won't be around in this one, but I suspect they'll be present. That said, I still enjoyed the first game, so assuming the cases are just asa good this time around, I imagine I'll like this one too.

I might have a problem, within the game... obviously I have a problem that I play this too much, heh.

I bought 2000 chickens just to see how many eggs they would make, and now I apparently have to feed them - and I don't have enough. I'm going to run out in 3-5 days, and there are at least that many days until the crop comes in. I might be able to stretch things out with sunflowers and lettuce, but they mostly eat barley and I just don't have it. Also, I'm not sure the field I have with barley in it will produce enough. I can buy chicken feed from the store, but I believe that the cost of that outweighs the eggs I would get from the chickens I fed. I planted mustard on my big field and oats on my small field, and then I bought a field that was even smaller that had barley planted in it, but that field is also not ploughed. I can fertilize it, though. I don't know. I guess in the Spring the lettuce will start producing again, and I have enough sunflowers. Hopefully we make it through even if they stop producing as much or for a bit.

On another note, I have made a composter and now make lettuce in a greenhouse on top of my arable crop and animal pursuits. The idea was to grow the lettuce for the chickens, and now that I have 2000 of them it makes a lot more sense than when I had 30 chickens and they only ate 100 liters of lettuce over 2 days. Now they eat 2000 liters of lettuce over 2 days. But, that still leaves me plenty of lettuce to sell to the restaurant and eventually, the farmer's market. I think I might have too many conversions set up right now for where I am. I need money to build and buy more things, but it's all in the goods being converted into other goods, whether through animals or production buildings.

I have quite a few forestry buildings set up now, and those can be profitable by themselves, but I'm also trying to save up so I can build some factories. Then I remember how far away that is, as I'll need to also buy land with resources on it in order to build them, and I just don't have the funds yet.

Since I'm going to be doing eggs pretty regularly now, I really should set up a courseplay course for them, and maybe even get the pallet collector, which puts eggs into a pallet instead of into the boxes that they go in now. Also a specialized material handling thing would be nice. But that costs money without actually making any additional money.

The question I usually face is when can I afford a Quality of Life upgrade vs. when can I afford a new income stream. Fields are good income but are expensive and a lot of work. Buildings are even more expensive but usually less work. They often require some sort of input that requires work, too, but processed goods usually are worth more than unprocessed goods. Pallets being the biggest exception to that rule. But pallets are needed in lots of production buildings, including orchards and greenhouses.

Since I just bought the lettuce greenhouse and the chicken building, I think next is a QoL upgrade, and handlers aren't THAT expensive...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm rambling now, but it's a lot of fun doing the work, and getting the profits out at the end, and reinvesting them into more money-making schemes.

Through the activity feed of my friends on Steam I found this little gem, that was currently on sale (approx. 1 buck). Bought, it, downloaded it, fired it up, played for 30 seconds and died. Revived with a grin, played on, 2 minutes later, died again. Revived with a grin......

The premise is: the game has 100 "endings" or ways to die/fail. And although it will reset you to your starting point with no equipment, it will always have some sort of little progress. But everytime you get a funny explanation what happened, and a small intro text when you revive, as well as you character also changes appearance according to the way you failed.

When you fall in lava, you revive with burnmarks. When you fall into a spiketrap, you revive with spikes protruding from your body and so on.

It doesn't seem to be a massive game, but it kinda scratches my "I want to 100% this game" itch to see all the possible different endings. Also like the humor in this one.

Played around with this puzzle game a little over the past few days.

It has an interesting setup. You and your "opponent" (which could be an actual enemy or something like a pickle jar that you have to open) both have a small deck of cards. The cards aren't shuffled, so you don't have to hope for cards that you need. Instead, you set the order that they appear before the match.

From gallery of vyran

When you draw a card on your turn, you select one of two abilities by swiping either to the left or right.

From gallery of vyran
From gallery of vyran

Some of those options move a particular card to the top of the deck, create a copy, or even destroy a card upon use, but other than your opponent's interference, you always know how your setup will proceed. The end goal is to reduce the opponent's health to 0, which represents you completing the current quest's goal.
