What is a Game Chat League?
A Game Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

My summer holiday is over today. Work starts properly tomorrow.(Had a day on monday planning a training course for new employees.) I will work 60% as a teacher and 40% as a digital pedagogy guru in our county.

First thing I did Going into school was putting my coffee mug from June in the dishwasher.

What is the thing you do first when returning to work from holiday?

Have you customized any games lately?

I 3D printed(badly) a bridge for this game.
The colour of the filament and the wonky printing(forgot to add a brim) made me name it «Chernobyl bridge».

We also used Lego figures during one of our plays of The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth.

Can you recommend me a playlist on spotify?

I have listened to too much bad music this summer, so I need something new.

8   Catan x23 Steam I may have a new default game.

N/A   Can't Stop x6 BGA but there is something to be said for a quick game before bed.

N/A   The Voyages of Marco Polo BGA Still not sure the best strategy, go to all the places or complete all the contracts or a good mix of both?

N/A   Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America x3 NEW! Such a cute game, in the way tiny things are cute. Only 3 diseases, 4 specialists, limited to North America. All the epidemic cards are used in every game, but the new twist is crisis cards. A crisis card allowed me to go from zero outbreaks to loosing the game in a single move! shake

N/A   Automobiles NEW! Yucata The latest in racing games that I've tried online, a deck builder that uses cubes rather than cards. Would def like to play again.

N/A   La Granja BGA Got a 4 player game that just started, it will be interesting seeing how it differs from a 3p.

9   Innovation BGA The engine builder that has so much take that. In a weird way I like it.

Been a week! Last weekend I peaked early on new meds for my bronchitis. Then things go ugly. Saw the pulmonologist (lung/chest doc), chest x-ray, blood work, new drugs(crazy written out schedule so A isn't taken too near B or C, but is ok with D), and trouble sleeping. I think I am feeling cautiously optimistic, my neighbor can no longer hear my coughing in a worrisome manner.

Yesterday afternoon I watched the first half of Hamilton. At intermission I needed to pause so I could read up on both the play and Hamilton himself. I am super impressed. Planning to watch act II this evening.

My new fav YouTube channel is these young dudes reacting to music. They are so awesome and fresh, completely open to new experiences. They are great! This was my introduction to them:

GAME WEEK

 9   Zombicide: Black Plague x6 (39 all-time)
Well, honestly, Zombicide is a bad game. Players control a couple of survivors who have to fulfill a mission, while from all sides zombies, necromancers and strange abominations approach and they all want to eat you. So you develop a basic strategy on how you want to achieve your goal, and then you roll tons of dice, kill tons of zombies while even more pour in. But this game is sheer fun. It’s frikkin’ sheer fun and we love it. We played two more scenarios from the Green Horde box; needed four tries for the first until we finally won it, and the second was won in two attempts. Bad game, but awesome. meeple

 9   1850 (3 all-time)
1850 is one of those Bill Dixon titles – big map, many companies, and very close to the 1830-standard. It is set in the Midwest of the U.S. I like Bill’s game a lot, because they focus on route building and long-term planning. And the 5-trains are not permanent, but rust with the purchase of the first 12-train!

 6   1868 NEW!
One of the Winsome Games titles of which approximately only 120 copies exist. This is from the Winsome Essen Set 2017 and set in Uruguay. As usual in Winsome 18xx titles, it features a brutal train rush and can be played in two hours (or even less). However, I dislike the shortage of trains and the winner was more or less determined after the second stock round (as usual in these games). I will play this one again if anyone asks for it, but otherwise, it will be a shelf-warmer.

 8   Love Letter (16 all-time)
Ending train game night, we looked for something quick and fun, and Love Letter was the game of choice. I ended up with no letter delivered – last place. Still, a great game! Anytime again!

 9   Hatten in Flames NEW!
 10   Advanced Squad Leader (558 all-time)
After some time, the ViennASL halfsquad met again. This time, a 1945 scenario set in Hatten was the battlefield of choice. Two of the guys played the American attackers, and two others defended with the Germans. I restricted myself to a (more or less) neutral observer (always offering help in form of sarcastic or snarky comments), attending the grill and providing fresh supplies of beer. We interrupted the game in the middle and had a wonderful dinner on the patio, crowned by a selection of craft beers the guys brought with them. After that, we continued the battle. Our German defender suddenly had the idea of trying out a scorched earth strategy and started to burn down the village of Hatten in turn 2 (and was pretty much successful with it), but the Hatten scenario rules forbid kindling – however, nobody thought about that rule … was it too much beer? Whatever, it was close to midnight anyway, we were already in turn 5 (of 6) and so we called it a (great) day and agreed on a draw. It was truly a fun evening with friends, grilled food, and great drinks.

N/A   Trivial Pursuit: The 1980's NEW!

We went on a long walk in a big park with our friends on Saturday afternoon. Two observations: We found a really well-done, and completely randomly located, rock labyrinth in a clearing so we all followed the path to the center and back out again, in about 5 - 8 minutes, and back on the walking paths I was heartened to see hundreds of bees (probably thousands I didn't see) amongst the wild flowers up there. I was the first to spot a young deer, as well.

Then we went back to their front porch to play socially-distanced Trivial Pursuit again. Only this time we used their 1980s set instead of my Genus game.
We are evenly matched in trivia as couples, and they won a close match in the opener. We will attempt to tie the set next weekend, sometime, no doubt.

Last week y'all:
Board Game: Terraforming Mars
Board Game: Glen More II: Chronicles
Board Game: Carcassonne: South Seas
RPG Item: The Fantasy Trip: Legacy Edition
Board Game: Downforce
Board Game: Twilight Struggle

 10   Terraforming Mars x9 (128 all-time)
Don't be too impressed by the quantity of plays, although it is an impressive number. I played a bunch of solitaire challenges, which are pretty quick and tough. I think I won about half of them, and twice I came up one oxygen short (because placing greenery tiles after the final round does not boost the O2).

Some of these games were via the app with Sean, Jonathan, and Marty. We've been playing asynchronously. We look forward to the app catching up to the rest of the game with some expansions, especially Prelude, and the other maps shouldn't be too hard to implement.

I also played a game with my wife on Hellas with Turmoil (our default is corporate era with Prelude no drafting).

8   Glen More II: Chronicles (19 all-time) ww
We were in the mood for a quick game last weekend, and GM II was on the coffee table...

 N/A   Carcassonne: South Seas NEW!
My friend Don suggested this on Yucata and although I've never played it live, I figured "how different can it be?" It's a tough one to figure out, but I'm liking it so far. Not better than Hunters & Gatherers though.

10   The Fantasy Trip: Legacy Edition (29 all-time) TNC
They finished off the Curse of the Pirate King and now are back in Olan-Pok. They have all created spare characters and so those are going to sign up for the 155th Olan-Pok Games. That will be the A plot this week.

The B plot is one of their party was arrested by fake town guards and has been kidnapped. Nobody seems to know where he's been taken...

 7   Downforce x4 (18 all-time) TNC
It was an early night for the RPG session since we're between major events so we cooled off with a quartet of this...

 10   Twilight Struggle (447 all-time) Damilli
After a break, we're back at it.

What's Going On: I don't know what's happened to my time management skills - either they've been badly blunted by the pandemic, or I've simply acquired too many tasks on my plate. Sadly, looking at the pile of things on it... it's too many tasks.

On the weekend I joined a small bubble of home canners and made a lot of pickles. 20 litre jars of dills, and 12 half litres each of bread & butter pickles, and pickled onions. Tonight I started 9 day sweet pickles. They take nine days (it's right there in the name). The first day you add salt and boiling water to your prepared cucumbers. They sit in that salt brine at room temperature and get a light fermentation. Day four and five you drain the water and replace with boiling water. Day six you drain and rinse, and add the pickling brine - lots of sugar and a ton of spices. Day seven and eight you drain the brine into a pot, add sugar to it, boil, and re-cover. Day nine you can them.

They are intensely flavourful, and the leftover brine (you end up with a gallon) makes an amazing salad dressing base for the rest of the year.

The nine day pickles come out mostly at Christmas and other rich feasts as a nice contrast condiment.
