A free offering from Epic that I had been curious about, but not nearly curious about to consider buying.

I saw a few ideas in the two levels I played that were clever, but this feels like it relies too much on "hey, remember this from that popular franchise?" rather than trying to capture the spirit of the Mega Man games.

Also, the movement animation looks like it was taken from a 15 year old flash game.

Like vyran above, I decided to play 20XX since it was given by Epic for free, and I certainly have nostalgia for the Megaman X series.

It's not great; it's mostly good; and definitely fine. It does a pretty good job of evoking the Megaman X games, with all the component parts. It's built in a rogue-like manner though, where you have to start from scratch if you die. But, there's not enough variety that you'd expect in a rogue-like game. The 8 bosses and 8 levels are all effectively the same, although the game makes the levels and bosses more difficult the further into the game you attempt them to account for the upgrades you get along the way. There's not much variety in the upgrades you get -- more damage with your basic attack or powers, more health, more energy...none of it really changes how you approach the game.

Just now, I got to the final boss for the first time (after about 4 hours of total playtime). I can't imagine being in a better position in any future run (lots of upgrades, max health with some armor) and I wound up losing . I'm not sure if I'll give it a few more goes or just stop playing and be happy that I got a few hours out of the game.

I'm still very early on in Persona 5 Royal and both I and my partner are enjoying the game (she has been enjoying just watching me play, although in the first 6 hours there's no "game" to speak of so I guess I've been watching it as well). I was thinking of dipping my toes into watching an anime series (Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and Fate Zero made the short list), but playing Persona 5 is really filling that niche -- it's an anime that also is a video game.

Non-game related, I've decided to rewatch (almost) all the X-Men films, if only to justify my continued subscription to Disney+. I just finished the third movie (Last Stand) and I've enjoyed the original trilogy, though I can see why Last Stand got some flak compared to the other two. Next up is First Class (no, I'm not going to watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Still hooked on this game. It's made me yell some choice expletives a few times, but I feel like I'm getting better at figuring out the intricacies of the battle system.

I just learned I could upgrade a device that made it so my summons could revive a single time with a "Guts" move, which proved incredibly helpful in a tough battle I just got through. 2 of my 3 summons were one-shotted but revived with Guts (I'm not sure if it works once in all cases or if it has a % chance). They stayed alive the remainder on the battle, which gave me the 2x bonus materials award.

I also felt pretty boss in the last battle because Chico, the dog character you start the game with, managed to hold his own against 3 tough enemies for 3 or 4 rounds before I could get help over to him. He has an Ultra attack that regains life based on how much damage he does, and he came back from less than 10% of his total health 2 times during those rounds.

The story is interesting, and the game keeps opening new areas and things to do, which is awesome. I have a few different areas to go to, each with their own free battle and story battle options. I also really like all the characters I've met in the game so far. They seem mysterious and interesting.

Started playing this. It has a slightly retro bit art style.

I didn't realise it was a visual novel. Kinda boring so far.

All you do is click through dialogue.

And occasionally mix a drink, often I then get told I did it wrong.

I was in the mood for something different last night--but not too different. Something familiar, yet something I don't often play. I considered installing Disciples: Sacred Lands, but I'd run into some difficult computer-compatibility problems last time I did, so I opted for another, already-installed game from 1999--the original AoW.

I played last night and again this morning, and I'm back into the swing of it again. The interface feels clunky, as is usual for older games; I've been spoiled by camera controls and pop-up messages telling me in advance what the results of my planned attack are likely to be. But aside from that, it's a solid game. And it's one I never came close to mastering back when it was new, though I played it an awful lot. So it's got a lot of mileage left in it even now.

I'm playing a small scenario (Cold Fusion). To me, those are plenty big. I don't have the patience for large scenarios anymore, much less a whole campaign. That just ends up being too much of a good thing (and too much downtime if there are many players, especially in classic mode).

Don't Escape - 4 Days to Survive is a point-and-click adventure with a time limit and survival elements. You have to make it through four days without dying. Each day you have limited time to prepare for a safe night. Some actions cost time and wasting it on fruitless activities should be a recipe for failure.

I started with this today and am halfway through the first day. I managed to seal the windows of the house I'll spend the night in but probably there's more to prepare. So far I'm enjoying it and I didn't meet any outlandish solutions to the puzzles at hand.

This game is from last month's Humble Choice bundle. A few thoughts on this month's bundle are up now HERE.

I got this on a whim - but while there are lots of things I like, I'm finding it a bit of a slog. The main issue is that the basic fight mechanics, once you get used to the puzzles, are just not very interesting. Once you line the enemies up, there's almost no room for anything interesting to happen. Sometimes the puzzle is really tricky. Often it's pretty easy. I got to area 3 and they do some new clever things with the enemies there but it's not enough and I still find myself largely just avoiding fights as much as possible.

The rest of it is so engaging though! The boss fights have really fun mechanics, the art style is super fun, it feels good to find the toads and hidden stuff (they really latched on to what they did well in Odyssey and BotW here) and the jokes are pretty good (the story isn't anything especially exciting but, it's Mario, you knew that). I don't know what might fix it - maybe a bigger variety in weapon patterns? More fight gimmicks? I dunno.

I'm still likely to play through it though.

Now that I have my Sega Genesis bluetooth controller, I've started playing some Sega games. I wanted to give this game a spin since I've been playing and (mostly) enjoying the Castlevania franchise. I haven't gotten very far into it since I've been a bit busy, but I've been liking it quite a bit so far. I don't know if it's my controller or not but the gameplay feels pretty smooth despite not having quite as much control over the character as you do in Super Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood.

Controls are starting to feel second nature, which is good because the enemies are becoming deadlier.

Some missions are heartbreaking. I like that it gives the horrors of war. Feels good when you can help people out.

So badass, when you can take out a fort/base without being touched, by either stealth or just bloodthirsty vengeance. I have most skills and abilities maxed now.

Ugh. I have been playing Shadow of War pretty much non-stop since I started.

Again. I GET the combat system, plus, with equipping Experience Gems, I have almost every skill upgrade and their upgrade upgrade... upgraded. So I can plow through waves of orcs. (I STILL get creamed sometimes if I'm not watching my Hit Points.)

I've been getting tired of the game, as I've been doing the same thing over and over again. I run through - dominate all the Worm Orcs I can to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the Captains, then dominate all the Captains I can. Then topple the Warchiefs and hopefully, the fort.

I'll also collect the Shelob memories and Shadows of the Past stuff.

I need to play more of the Main story line quests.

The game is great, though, as the missions, etc are just short enough, you constantly keep saying... "well, I'll just do this one more thing." and "Then this one more thing I'll do." Then you inevitably get killed by some peon grunt, whom you then have to track down for a Vendetta. So you find yourself playing for hours, without realizing it.

I've also been enjoying doing Online Vendettas for other people as you can get some nice loot in the warchests or dominate captains for your garrison. (though I've been doing very little with the gear as I have some Outlaw Legendary gear that does what I like.)

Plus, I tend to DOMINATE and Recruit more Orcs, than kill them for their loot.

In my vain search for a decent action-oriented Zelda like that I haven't played, I finally just said "screw it, there's nothing out there that's good that I haven't already hit", and so decided to finally play Ys VI on Nightmare.

A couple years back, I read one of the top guys at Falcom mention that they always design their games with Nightmare difficulty being the "intended" experience, so I've been on a path to replay all of the Ys titles on Nightmare, and I have to say, I think Ys VI gains more from this than any of the others. This is a deeply strange game, a really unexpected blend of modern and ancient sensibilities, and while it's a bit clumsy at times (in fact, a lot of times), the sense of off-the-rails "where should I go next?" adventure that's been lost in Falcom titles of recent vintage is present in Ys VI in spades. The higher difficulty level, where you're not just steamrolling everything effortlessly and instead have to make decisions about how many resources you're going to use on this trip down "dangerous area X", as well as the presence of powerful enemies actually being dangerous and thus perhaps convincing the player to go poking around in other parts of the world to see if they can find something that's going to help them in their current situation, really makes the whole package make a lot more sense.

Getting Quina and Amarant caught up in levels to Zidane and Vivi for the trek through Mount Gulug is a real slog. Between that and getting two teams ready for the Desert Palace scenario before this, I've spent the majority of the last several sessions just running around in the overworld.

Eclipsing then 200 hour mark now, and still going strong. Road to the Show is still my primary focus, and I just finished up the 2028 season. The team was on fire all year with great pitching and league leading offensive performances in almost every metric. The 2027 season ended in heartbreak after we lost the World Series against the Angels in game 7 after the manager prematurely pulled me out of the game. It was scoreless through 7 innings, and I accounted for 2 of the team's 4 hits in the game, but I got pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th. We didn't score that inning, and the relief pitcher immediately gave up a home run. They went on to hit another off a bad pitch from the closer in the 9th. Down 2-0, the team made a 2 out rally in the bottom of the 9th, loading the bases. A solid base hit likely would be tied the game, and anything better would give us the walk off win, but the next batter struck out. Super disappointing. But then enter the 2028 season.

External image

We had such a dominant 2028 season, no other team in the division stood a chance

The team won an MLB record 126 games. We were locked into the playoffs just over a month before they started when we clinched the NL Central. We had to fight off our division rival the Cardinals in the NLDS after they won their wildcard game, winning the series 3-2. Next up was the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS, and we won the series 4-1, sending us to the World Series for the second season in a row. The Seattle Mariners beat the Blue Jays in the ALCS. The Jays made a great effort, coming into the playoffs via the wildcard and forcing a game 7, but the Mariners were dominant all season, winning 102 games. I started game 1 of the World Series at home, winning the game 7-0 and amassing an incredible 19 strikeouts. We won game 2 and 3, but dropped game 4. I was started in game 5 on the road with a chance to win it all, and fortunately I came through, shutting them out again in an 8-0 drubbing, bringing the championship to Cincinnati for the first time in nearly 30 years.

External image

At long last, the championship returns to Cincinnati

I also collected 3 consecutive Cy Young, NL MVP, and Silver Slugger awards. I have upped the difficulty for the 2029 season since I'm a 99 overall now. I'm 2-1 in the season so far, and the challenge is nice and balanced, so I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I've also been playing online a bit and collecting cards for Diamond Dynasty mode. I thought I might have stopped playing the game by now since I've won the World Series, but I'm still having a ton of fun with it. I may wind up playing until the game forces me to retire.

I didn't realize there was a remaster of this game, and my fiancée brought up that she enjoyed the original. I happen to have the original PS2 port on the PS4, so we started playing together. We're tag teaming it, and it has been a blast. Had I known about the remaster before we started, I probably would have just bought that since there are some things about the original that have not aged well. We've also had some issues with the game crashing, and that has been a bummer. But despite all that, this is a fun experience. I never played the game on PS2, so it's a new experience for me. I love alien themed stuff, and the game is also hilarious. I have the sequel on PS4 as well, so we may end up playing through that next. She hasn't played that one, so it would be a new experience for us both.

External image

We've actually already beat the story mode and 100% the game, but there are a few trophies left to get the platinum, so we're working on those. Annoyingly, one of the trophies is missable, so we'll have to start a new save file to get that one. But fortunately I think you can use cheat codes, which should speed things up a bit.

Ploughing through Ch. 6 a little in the mornings and then on the plane. My battery died this time while we still had quite a bit of time on our last flight. I suppose because I wasn't able to charge it during layovers since we were on the same plane the whole way. I have to redo the battle against Georges anyway probably because 2 of my people died early on.

Played a bit more of this. As I get deeper I'm especially loving the tension of trying to crawl through BT territory with no BB in rough terrain and terrible weather, trying to balance stamina/endurance, cargo safety, and just plain not getting in any bad fights, the caution, care and planning that has to go into this is just hitting all my buttons. Do I use my all-terrain skeleton to move faster, or do I keep the power and bring as much as I can to build up bases safely? How much can I hope to plan out a series of zip lines? How many premium orders can I take this time around?

There's just so much to think about, and wandering the world is just so engaging. I'm getting further along. I have a feeling some bad stuff is going down soon.

Since I upped my 2020 Alphabetical VG Challenge entry from Easy to Normal 1.1 (since that doesn't have to be played in alphabetical order) it means I now have to make sure I play at least 5 hours in each game that starts with each letter of the alphabet.

This week I've been working on getting A over 5 five hours. I'm up to 3.8 hours so far - I hope to make 5 by the end of the week!

And I'm even closer for K! I'm at 4.6 hours in Kingdom: Classic, which I'm absolutely loving!

I've also made some progress with J as I've almost reached 1 hour with Jotun, which is another great game!

Honestly, I'm having a lot of fun with the alphabet challenge - I'm finding a lot of great games to play, when I was in a spot where I didn't know what to play next.

I've essentially finished this but I'm working on the last 3 achievements.

Production Master: Own 100 Nuclear Structure at once. This will be easy, I have all the materials on hand to kick this out in a few minutes. Just not what I'm worried about right now.

Completionist: Achieve every feat in the game. Basically 100% the in game challenges. I'm close. I just need to die a few times for one feat which is easy enough. Time consuming because it's kind of hard for me to die at this point, but easy. Cover the entire map with land. Should be easy, but it can supposedly be a buggy feat. I've got over 90% of the map covered and all the resources I need to finish this one off. And the third feat I need to accomplish is tied to the third achievement. Can't get Completionist until I get

Trillionaire: Accumulate one freaking TRILLION coins in game. Not over the course of the game, have one trillion coins in hand.
Seriously? One trillion coins?

shake

I'm figuring out a production train that becomes a money train right now and think I have it dialed in pretty close. During the process today I went from around 100 million coins to around 10 billion coins. Now I've got to work on scaling this process up.

I'm more than a little annoyed at this achievement, but I will get it. Mostly because I'm so annoyed with it.

Oh, good game BTW. End becomes a bit a of a slog, but is still fun. Unless you want all the achievements. Then it becomes absurd.

I started with Shenmue I yesterday. I'm not a console player. So I didn't get in touch with it on release. The most common reaction to this re-release and first time release on PC is that it's only enjoyable if you played and enjoyed it back then in 2000. But it still holds the highest rating ever given by the German videogame magazine I mostly consult. Enough reason to try it.

After 4 hours, I'm enjoying the game and will continue. Sure, it's slow, the 3D graphics are outdated and the controls are awkward. But it has an odd appeal. It reminds me of a Yakuza game in offering a whole city where you can spend your time with anything else but the main story. While the Yakuza games offer far more diversion in the form of minigames or set collection, Shenmue clearly was an inspiration.

I like that the game feels a bit like a simulation. When you are searching for somebody in Shenmue, you are really roaming the streets and ask people if they can help you. People will be in certain spots at a certain time of day. Accordingly, you have to pass the time doing other things until then.

The one thing I'm still struggling with is the combat and specifically the training. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do in training except that it's supposed to be a grind. Can I skip this grind or will the game become impossible later on if I don't train?

Since XCOM 2: War of the Chosen war of the chosen started treating me to the infamous memory leak issue, I abandoned it for now, and started playing this, instead! I beat the base game not long after it came out, but never played this generous DLC, which essentially gives you a whole new campaign with all kinds of improvements and additions. I'm really enjoying it!

I had trouble with Proto Dora in that he kept healing way more than I could dmg him once he got to 5k HP and then he would just wipe the floor with me, so I ended up getting like 10 levels I kid you not. I started increasing stats instead of the tech levels and got chaos the ether that 1/2s the enemy's healing ability.

I ended up finishing the game (well kinda - it's 3 parts). I was annoyed that there seemed to be no save before an elevator and a bunch of mobs, but the final two bosses weren't that bad. Glad I'm finally done, but not real eager to start on the next one just yet. I don't want to wait too long, though, so many next year?

The battle system in this one is interesting, but I have quite a few annoyances with the game and part II seems to be thought of as the worst of the 3 (but also the shortest).

Got my A's going in Spring Training.

First game went 14 innings. Finally got a double followed by a double in the bottom of the 14th to end it. Must have been a good 20 total pitchers used by both sides.

Quite the gruel-fest.

Just got the closest I ever have to beating the final (final final) boss. I actually made it there with a descent HP count, which I've never done before.
