Joined Jan and Rudy for heists. Andy joined in later. I forgot half of the skills and my loadouts seemed to be mismatched (like a stealth setup for loud missions and a rifle equipped in a shotgun build), so I fumbled around with those for a good while.

This game is growing on me.

True, I wish it would tighten up or settle into a groove. I feel like this could be something special, something that you remember playing with a big 'ole grin.

But, artistically it's a bit all over the place. Sometimes it's going for a Hateful Eight vibe, other times it seems like a dumb videogame that knows its a dumb videogame, other times it kind of loses the tone and the violence feels like the tail wagging the dog. Between chapters, you see portions of a congressional hearing that was supposedly held after-the-fact (after Lincoln causes all sorts of havoc going after the New Orleans Mob). These are kind of silly though - you can make them look and sound like exasperated elected officials but you can't make them sound like they're talking about something other than a formulaic videogame.

It takes a while, but I do think Lincoln Clay comes into his own as a character. Sometimes these "massive open world" games have really awkward beginnings, and Mafia 3 definitely struggles to put all of its cards on the table. Once it does, though, I like Donovan, Cassandra, Vito (& Alma), and Burke.

One thing I've noticed: in order to be authentic, the only time you're listening to music in the game is via radio, and you obviously have no modern ability to curate what you're hearing. But this is a mistake, because the actual audience will have very uneven backgrounds. There will be some songs that any given player has heard a thousand times, some that are mostly new to them, some that they've heard a lot but still enjoy. Since that will vary so widely, they should have just let you tailor radio stations. I can't reset my brain's experience with 1960s music, sorry.

If I could, I would spend every driving sequence cruising to "Hold On, I'm Comin'" which fans have adopted as Lincoln Clay's unofficial anthem.

(apparently a non-trivial number of younger players have discovered this song through Mafia 3, which is kind of amazing)

I feel like I'm starting to wrap things up. Getting a lot of abilities to be able to backtrack to older areas and reach prizes I had been unable to access.

Still quite a lot of content ahead for me to do though. Probably a fair amount is optional.

The game is definitely starting to pick up some speed. I finally unlocked the ice breaker upgrade to my ship, so I can explore the entire Northern part of the world. Finding lots more seeds, treasures, and my first piece of Marble.

I picked up a spirit that I think I was supposed to get right near the beginning of the game that I somehow missed. She's helping me with the foundry, which is nice because that's one of the biggest chores in the game currently.

The game continues to impress me.

Finished my Helminth orbiter upgrade, that now allows me to "feed" my warframes to the Helminth, who in return, will offer me 1 ability per frame to infuse my other frames with. I do have enough frames to "feed to" for the next week, and then it is off to farming those other frames (or feed already build "regular" ones).

Also helped Seth getting some animal captures for his progression.

Edit: Finished Xaku, my Necramech, my last 2 K-Drive hoverboards and "digested" my 2nd warframe, now onwards on my 3rd. Maxed standing with the Necramech syndicate and reached lvl 4 on the "main" syndicate in the Cambion drift.

I'm messing around with a few minor games I probably won't complete. Yesterday, I started Dog Sled Saga. It's a very simple racing game that originated as a mobile game which is obvious in the controls and the lack of depth. You are managing your stable of sled dogs and need to successfully complete races to earn money which is needed for upkeep and upgrading your facilities. Ultimately, it's your goal to progress to the top league and beat your nemesis.

Another one I'm going to try is Gunman Tales. It looks like an Amiga game and this together with the Western theme attracted me to this title. Hopefully, it's as simple and fun as I hope.

The game I'm most likely going to complete is Omen Exitio: Plague which cbrua just posted on the beaten list. Seems to be a short game that is easy to complete in one session.

I tired myself out doing a bunch of yard work yesterday, and in the evening I wanted a game I could just play around with while relaxing--nothing too challenging or exciting or demanding. For years, one of my go-to games when I'm in that mood has been Civilization. I rarely play it on a difficulty level I can't easily handle. So far, I've played every game of Civ VI on Prince level, and the one I started yesterday is no exception.

My random civ turned out to be Korea, and I know that's a science-oriented civ, so I resolved to focus on that, even though I've yet to see any player win a science victory. In the back of my mind, I was still considering a religious or diplomatic victory more likely.

However, any thoughts of a religious victory were dashed when all the religions were taken before I could found one. Now I'm just watching Buddhist missionaries from Scotland and Sikh missionaries from Nubia vie for spiritual control of my cities.

My starting position was terrible; there are three or four rivers that flood frequently. I managed to found six or seven cities, but I'm out of room now. And I'm behind in everything--even science. I'm also on the verge of bankruptcy. And at war with Nubia. The only plus is that I'm suzerain of several city-states.

Nevertheless, it was a pleasant evening of gaming. Even this latest version of Civ works just fine for me when I want to lose myself in a game but not have to work at it. Interesting things happen turn after turn, and I get the feeling I'm building an empire my own way.

I don't think Civ is a game I'll ever get good at, because I'm just not motivated to try very hard. The more I play, the more I learn, but I'm never eager to closely study what does what. So I learn by osmosis, over a very long period of time. When I have taken time to read about the game and how to make solid decisions, I've been turned off by all the fussy little details one has to pay attention to. So I snap back to playing very casually.

On the plus side, I do like playing casually on low-to-medium difficulty levels.

This morning I was up pretty early, and I had time to get in nearly an hour of this game in progress. I'm playing as a randomly selected leader, Sarax, a high-elf rogue (one I custom-created some time ago, I think). I'm at war with both rivals--Saridas, a high-elf sorcerer, and Karl the Lich, a halfling necromancer.

It's a small-map, two-level game on Lord level, and it's proving to be a tough challenge. I'm not always up for that (see my comments on Civ VI above), but I appreciate it when I'm in the right mood.

When I left off last time, I was caught between Saridas (to the north) and Karl (to the south). This time, it turned out Saridas had sent small armies down to where my armies were, while Karl was en route to capture a city of mine just to the east.

So, I destroyed Saridas's intruding force. Karl captured my city, as there were only three units to defend it. But Karl himself was there, so I went after him next turn. I managed to recapture the city without any losses and send Karl into the void. (He'll return, at this throne city, in a few turns.)

Saridas, meanwhile, sailed toward one of my cities to the north. My armies will have to head that way next, since right now I'm strong enough to defeat the force at his disposal.

Underground, things went against me. Independent forces moved into the undefended serpent dwelling which had just joined my empire, so that's lost. And way over to the west, I had just started to found a city, when a medium-strength force with a settler, under Saridas's command, destroyed my guys and set up shop himself. At least I've still got my dragon dwelling.

I'm struggling for cash, though. Can't seem to generate enough gold.

I haven't actually started playing this yet, but it feels like time to get back to it now. So over the weekend I read most of the manual, and now I'm starting into a Das Tactic video series. Next I'll probably redo the tutorials and get ready to start and play a game.

Reading the manual was inspiring. I know a lot of people never bother to do that, but as an old board wargamer, I've learned to love reading rules. This video-game manual isn't quite the same (because you normally never get to see all the rules--all the hidden algorithms--to a video game), but it still gives a pretty good overview and helps me feel oriented to the game.

No telling whether I'll take to DW:U or not. It shows a lot of promise, but I have reservations about some things.

On the plus side, it looks like a fleshed-out version of my old favorite, Master of Orion, and it'd be great to immerse myself in a much bigger and richer space opera.

On the minus side, it's real-time and very detailed and complicated. It can be paused, and everything can be automated, but I've had trouble with both those things in the past. They're not necessarily deal-breakers, though; I may even adjust pretty easily. As to the complication, I don't mind it, but it sometimes leads to information overload: I don't care about the fifteen different models of neutron pellet guns (or whatever they're called), and I resent having to choose from among them. I usually get past that by telling myself I might care someday, when I've become good at the game; and for now I can just pick one at random.

Anyway, it's good to be off to a new gaming adventure. Last time around, I spent only about seven hours sampling DW:U--not really enough time to get a good feel for it. And I've practically forgotten that experience, so I'm starting over now.

After my strategic failure with Roosevelt, I did some early game practice with a variety of civs at Emperor to refresh myself on the basics. Just played the first 100 turns or so in order to check the sanity of my initial builds and settlements. That was helpful. I played Liz, Joao, Justinian, and maybe one or two more and got each to a good place.

I ended up playing out the next game, with Willem van Oranje of the Dutch. It was a strange but interesting game. I thought I was alone on a big island for the first 50 turns or so, not seeing any enemy scouts. However, it turned out Peter the Great of Russia was my neighbor on the other side of a northern stretch of jungle. But he was really behind on development and remained so the entire game - I suspect his first settler got eaten by barbs. With a few gold mines, no military pressure, and no early religion from Peter, I decided to shoot for bulbing Philosophy in order to found Taoism. Between that and entertainment, I'd be able to run some big cities and work lots of cottages. (Other than the gold I had no luxes.) I was two turns away from popping the GScientist and working on Code of Laws when I realized no one had yet founded Confucianism! Super weird. Sure enough, I was the first to CoL and then to Philo the next turn, nabbing myself two religions. Right about the same time, I took advantage of Peter's gimpiness to nab a terrific city in the center of what really should have been his half of the continent. That city also got me in position to capture a couple barb settlements. At that point, I had two religions, a relatively weak neighbor sharing my state religion, and space enough for 9 cities - a strong setup for a Cultural Victory given Willem's Financial trait. (You need 3 Temples to build 1 Cathedral, and you want Cathedrals in each of the three culture cities you'll use to win, so 9 total cities is a critical breakpoint. It's difficult to hit that without war on most Emperor maps.)

The next goal was to be the first to Liberalism (enables civic to double culture, plus a free tech). For the next ~150 turns, the game was a careful march to Lib with one eye on Peter's power level. I only filled out a couple basics like Masonry, Currency, and Music, ignoring the Metal Casting line and Engineering. I hit Liberalism around 1200AD - a bit late, but I was still the first to it (took Nationalism) and Peter never DoW'd me. I teched only a little more to get Gunpowder and Printing Press (better town output) and then shut down research, cranked the culture slider, and entered the perpetual Renaissance. Around the same time, I got my first transcontinental visitors - the Ethiopians. I got Compass and Optics out of them and sent out my own Caravel to meet the rest of the gang. I found that I was in 2nd place score-wise, but Pacal of the Mayans was way ahead of the rest of us, something like 2500 to my 1700. Fortunately, the rest of the continent was mostly united against him, which meant I could trade freely with everyone but Pacal and not hit any diplo trouble. So I did just that, picked up a ton of resources, and eventually ended up with Astro, Military Science, Guilds, Engineering, and Banking off of trades, which is pretty solid.

From there it was just a matter of hitting end turn while culture piled up, continuing to build musket-era units to dissuade Peter from doing anything foolish. He eventually got pulled into an overseas war against Mali anyway. I finished the Cultural Victory in 1862, never having been at war the whole game.

Very interesting game. Whatever happened to Peter to gimp him early on was a gift, and I wasn't expecting to get both Confucianism and Taoism. But I think my early plan was solid - if nothing else, I'd have been in a strong position to simply eliminate Peter in the medieval era and have the whole continent to myself for a space victory. It was also a somewhat food-poor start - plenty of green for towns but very few food resources, which drastically weakens whipping. I didn't end up switching to Slavery until my 2nd ring cities were founded. The game ended up being one of only two I've played on Emperor where I was never at war, not counting island starts. As much as there's a typical pattern of military expansion to Civ IV, it's not strictly necessary. It's all about playing the map and using what you've got.

After an early war that "just" gained me their colonies in Peru, I spent most of the early 1600s gearing up for a war with France. I had Casus Belli for southern Italy, where Naples was historically a property of the crown of Aragon, and I inherited the right to that land when the crown of Aragon moved to Spain.

The hammer came down about 1660, with my allies (Austria, the Mamluks, and Great Britain) joining forces with me and my vassals to fight France and her various allies - mostly lightweight Germanic states, but rich states, and there was a lot of them. Austria sued for peace pretty quickly, as did a couple of France's allies that were close to Italy, but the rest of us went the distance. It was a glorious victory, and in my wrath I aimed to cripple France and her allies so as to keep her down for good. Unfortunately, in my zeal, I bit off more than I could chew, taking lands from one of her Germanic allies that was a member of the Holy Roman Empire, a bit of land in Italy (including Rome) from one of France's allies, plus a few Pacific islands I had no Casus Belli for. Taking Rome makes Catholics and the pope angry unless you give it to the pope pronto, but despite me being the biggest Catholic in the game (the Reformation did not go well for the Catholics generally - the HRE is all Protestant, as is France), the pope has some ongoing bitterness towards me for reasons I don't understand, so I decided to hold onto it.

I'd been kind of aggressive all game, but I guess this was a bit much for the old chaps on the continent, because at the end of the war all the two-bit states (plus a few decent-sized states, some of whom used to be my allies), put down their drinks, sent some angry letters, and collectively formed a Coalition against me. I promptly sold the pope Rome (the "Papal State" was in the game, but was a sole province up in Germany, somehow, with all their Italian provinces annexed by the Protestant state of Tuscany) and started twiddling my thumbs, hoping I could sit tight. A couple years went by safely, but out of the blue one of the countries declared war on me, triggering the coalition. Great Britain stood by me, but the Mamluks reneged on their Alliance, leaving me mostly on my own. My military was still in tatters from the Spanish-French war, but on paper I wasn't too badly outnumbered. In practice, though, most of my (highly theoretical) army existed as the standing forces of my colonies in the New World, and that didn't do me much good when the war was in Europe. I had a large war chest saved up from pillaging France, and that plus a few loans gained me close to 100k in mercenaries, and I made a good show of it. But all that did was drag things out. I had to reduce my tax on New Spain to nothing, and even still the war exhaustion put them on the brink of declaring independence. At the same time, the war exhaustion was playing havoc with local unrest, as well. So in the end I was forced to give back all I gained from France (with the exception of one crappy island in the Pacific), and had to declare Navarro and Sicily independent, too. So I ended up with less. And, I've lost my top place in the Admin and Military rankings (still overall top score, though). With my taxes on New Spain down to 0, my economy is not so hot when it comes to paying off those loans, either. I'm in a good spot, but it was a real comeuppance to have Europe, basically, collectively take me to school for my warmongering ways.

I made a bunch of Heavy Knights for throwing purposes and they all have rhyming names. I also just noticed the name randomizer. Well, that might've come in handy had I noticed sooner.

I need to go to the item world next to get a pass or something.

Played some more of my current JRPG - I am not sure I really got the hang of the combat system. I'm mainly mashing buttons and have my crew do whatever they do. But as I'm doing alright and didn't have to repeat any but the first Boss fight, so it can't be that wrong?

Anyhow, I had a few laughs and many battles and arrived now in Capua Torim. I have not yet learned a lot about the story - it's all pretty mysterious up until now. But I enjoy the game as a relaxed after-work-experience!

XB1X via GamePass.

It’s pretty much Wasteland 2 with much higher production values and fewer bugs. And it’s in Colorado so instead of sand you tromp around in snow.

I love the nuts and bolts and combat of this game. The production values are super high and it reall seems like inXile made the most of the Microsoft dollars that they got to polish the game. It is very well put together.

I just don’t like the world and the general Wasteland sensibility. It’s such a Grimdark Edgelord game. I get that this is Wasteland’s thing, being edgy and dark and grim punctuated with something that I suppose could be loosely described as humor. It’s just not my thing right now.

Going to keep playing because I love the combat and level progression.

Maybe this should go in the geeklist for "games you put down" or whatever, but I did just play this for the first time this weekend. So...:

The "remastered" version of this released on Switch/PS4/iOS/Android last weekend. I clocked in hundreds of hours playing this back in the day with my sister, so we both picked it up to give it a whirl.

The original game had crazy tech requirements to play multiplayer. Obviously local only (it was on GCN), and each player needed a GBA/SP + a cable to connect to the GCN. But the gameplay was neat--it had the feel of a DS game... before the DS existed.

Anyway, I was expecting the same level of gameplay as the original. It wasn't perfect (the "Defend" command, particularly the Selkie's backflip--felt too clunky/slow to actually use). But anyway. Uh. So no. I'm quite disappointed.

Original system for multi-player spellcasting:
The idea is if both you and me cast Blizzard on an enemy, if we released the spell at the same time, it would combine into a stronger spell (Blizzara). If three players did it simultaneously, you would get an even stronger spell (Blizzaga). Or! There is a funky timing for 2 players to still achieve the level 3 spell. But the idea casting higher-level spells required some coordinating/timing.

Originally the timing of casting spells wasn't explained very well, you just had to figure out what it was. But man, my sister had it down to a science, especially after grinding dungeons for hours. We knew what spells to use on what enemies. We didn't have to discuss what we needed to do, etc, we just did it. So I figured playing the new version online would be fine because it's not like I would need to actually tell my sister to cast Blizzard. She would just know to do it and do it. And she was always second to release for spells, so she could make the call on if we were going to do the lv2 version (instant release) or the funky lv3 version (delayed release), based on if we could afford the extra wait.

WELL there is now a delay on ALL combined spell casting.
What I mean is before for lv2, both players would release instantly for Blizzara. Now, there is a delay. First player releases. Then second player sees a visual bar showing when to release for the lv2 or the lv3 spell. This slight delay is... um... irritating. It already took a second to actually "cast" the spell, but an extra delay to combine it now? Gah. Makes casting the delayed lv3 in 2-player extra hard (because if an enemy whacks either player, the whole spell is canceled).

The OTHER obnoxious thing in the "remastered" version:
You can't see what action each player has currently "set".
So like, each player has a list of commands (Attack, Defend, <spell slot slot 1>, <spell slot 2>, etc) that can cycle through with the L/R buttons. Whatever you have selected is what you will do when you press "A". And in the original game, this was displayed on the screen. This was very critical to the whole "me and my sister being able to play without having to announce everything". Usually the only time I cast spells is to combine with my sister. So knowing what spell she is going to cast before the "I'm actually casting it animation" is on the screen is kind of important. It's previous seconds. Ugh.

Originally I was looking forward to playing through this game with her and was wondering how we would find the time to even do this. I thought "maybe we can try the later dungeons without being crazy overleveled". But this is very suboptimal.

A few of our friends also go the game, or were thinking about it. But the first impression overall from all of us was no bueno. If they have interest in trying to get together for 3 or 4-player co-op I would be down for trying that, because that's something I never really got to do. And maybe by having more players, one or two of them can distract the enemies so the extra delay on casting spells can become more bearable. But I'm thinking the interest in coordinating us playing together is not that high.

Sure, you can play with randos online, but I'm absolutely not interested in that for this game.

FS 2020 has so few lessons compared to FSX. Still looks pretty decent even on my older PC, though.

Still haven't been able to get back to any long form stuff so I've been hitting a bunch of little bite-size stuff.

Played some Lumines because a friend bought the remake and then asked me if the original also had "Move your body"

it does.

Also played some Kwirk, a Sokoban-style game where you sometimes control multiple characters. There are only 30 levels, 10 easy (done), ten medium (half done), ten hard (not started yet). I don't love them - some of them add needless complexity with large, messy levels, which I feel is a crutch that puzzle games can lean on when elegance is so much more appealing (see also Crush on PSP, which I might go back to, and to a lesser extent Hexcells). Speaking of which, I'm most of the way through Hexcells Infinite which was really cheap lately. I have I think three or maybe four puzzles left. Though I also have two that I got more than one error on that I have to go back to because...... because.

I think Infinite is the best implementation yet, and I love that there are user created puzzles. (even though it seems like they aren't tested? So like, how do they get through? Dunno, don't care.)

Also some The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth: switch version, I've nearly got all sheets filled for the characters I've unlocked, minus harder Greed mode and Delirium. I think just one boss rush (lilith), one Hush, and a few Mega Satans to go otherwise, though I have several characters to unlock. A while ago I accidentally deleted all my progress on the PC version so I've barely started that over (haven't even unlocked the Polaroid yet) but I have a few higher victories.

Anything else?

As for games I'm neglecting: Spelunky, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Ōkami, and most disappointingly Death Stranding. I really need to get myself in order to sit down and really get that done. I was loving it but I've just been out of sorts.

More of this! My Psionics lab is almost up and running, and I'm waiting to have at least a couple of Psi operatives before I build the alien transmitter.

I'm also currently playing / reading the visiual novel An Octive Higher which is set in a magical version of 1600 - 1700's France. Not great, by any means, but not bad either.

Humble Bundle has all of the DLC for this game on sale right now, so I picked up a few of the dinosaur packs as well as Dr Wu's hybrids DLC.

I fired the game up to try and unlock these new dinos for my daughter to see, but it had me jump through a lot of hoops. I forgot I had to research the fossils, then run repeated expeditions to get viable genomes. Also, several of the new dinos are still locked behind missions I hadn't completed at various points in the game.

I did manage to unlock 3 new dinos and my daughter liked the little tiny one that runs around eating bushes.

It's my 3rd most played game on Steam right now with 79 hours, behind Grim Dawn at 212 hours and Skyrim at 176 hours. It just passed LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, which has 76 hours.

Paper Mario continues to entertain! I have now resolved the Yellow Streamer questline, which took place in the prettiest region up until now.
The final dungeon had lots of cobwebs and spiders and stuff, so it was pretty clear that the final boss of the area would be a giant
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Hole Punch. Yeah. Didn't see that coming, either. Although there were some pretty obvious clues, like all the toads with holes instead of faces...

It also likes to dance and - oh, well, I had a few good laughs in that dungeon laugh. Pretty entertaining game, in a silly way. Silly, but entertaining!
