Kickstarter is a hotbed of activity when it comes to funding indie videogame development. This list will intend to catalog both current and past attempts at crowdfunding of game development through Kickstarter. It was inspired by similar GeekLists of BGG and RPGGeek.

Video Games on Kickstarter

Feel free to add projects I have missed and future Kickstarter projects. If you add a project to the list, please be sure to include prominently the most important information.

Description

When you add a project, please setup a reminder on Kickstarter. This will help you remember to come back to this GeekList and update it with the final status of the project after funding has closed. Once a project is closed, move it to the bottom of the list. Otherwise, we'll try to keep the list in chronological order at the top for projects still awaiting the funding end date.

Thanks for your contributions, and happy gaming!

Lifeless Planet
Windows, Mac
Ends October 24, 2011
$8,500 Goal Met!

The goal of Lifeless Planet is to put the “adventure” back in "action-adventure.” I grew up loving games like Out of this World, The Dig, and ICO, and I want to create a gaming experience in the spirit of those classic adventure games.

THE STORY:

In the last few years, scientists have actually discovered over 1,000 new planets outside our solar system, and a few of those may be similar to earth.

In Lifeless Planet, you’ll get to explore one of those distant worlds. But you’ll quickly discover the planet is a barren wasteland. Mysteriously you’ll also find evidence that other explorers had already set foot on the planet...many years ago...and you’ll struggle to explain the existence of another human in this desolate place. Will you be able to put aside your skepticism and follow her to preserve your life?

Dropsy
Windows
November 2, 2011
$225 Goal Met!

In a sense, Dropsy has been in development for a little over three years. The saga started on a message board as a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' game, where posters directed the hand-less, unintelligible, and questionably human hero through various perils and journeys. After the completion of the initial game thread in 2008, I was swamped with inquiries and requests regarding the possibility of a playable Dropsy the Clown game. Now, after a little waiting and a lot of thinking, development will begin.

Many of those who enjoyed Dropsy's debut cited a shared nostalgia for old LucasArts adventure games like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. This game will be comparable in a few aspects, but I really want to hone in on the intrinsically satisfying fun that exploration provides. The player will also encounter colorful characters and mind-stretching logic puzzles in surreal, off-kilter landscapes.

Blindside
Windows, Mac
Ends December 1, 2011
$7,000 Goal

We’re creating a video game with no graphics, played entirely using audio. It is an audio adventure, set in a fully 3D world that you’ll never see.

It's called BlindSide, and it’s one of the first games to bring a brand new gaming experience to sighted players, that can also be fully enjoyed by visually impaired gamers. So far we’ve completed 10 minutes of gameplay to prove out the technology, and demonstrate that our core mechanic is fun. There have been a handful of audio-only games, but nothing like this before.

We hope to raise money on Kickstarter to complete the first 45 minute episode (which could end up providing even more gameplay, depending on your skill level) and need to pay professional actors, buy sound effects, buy software distribution licenses, support coding time, eat ramen etc. If we raise our target, we plan to launch the PC and Mac versions of the game at the end of January 2012. We’ve done the hard part, now we need to do the expensive part.

Cafe Murder
iOS
Ended
$7,600/$6,500 Goal Met!

Cafe Murder is a game about two lovable siblings on a quest to make their sandwich shop into a five star establishment. The player, controlling Rainy the waitress, must prepare and serve sandwiches. Things are spiced up by Rainy's brother Stabby, a homicidal chef who goes on rampages with his butcher knife and attacks customers.

Speaking of customers, Rainy and Stabby are joined by a large cast of unique characters who visit the cafe, each with their own personality and preferences (see character descriptions below).

With endearing characters, comical violence, and fast-paced sandwich-making, we hope Cafe Murder will add some character and soul to the genre of "restaurant simulation" games.
