From Hell to Heaven?

At Têrkhen

Split Shield really lives up to its name as the tavern brawl gets properly started. I try my darnestto get out of the harms way, but someone hits me on my temple and I hear ringing in my ears for a while. So much for not hitting a lady. Another guy starts pushing me while someone else hits Ruach. Then someone else hits the guy who hit me, serves him right! I get closer to the stairs leading up and Ruach gets close, trying to protect me. A huge, brawny man approaches and just hits me without a warning, Ruach manages to dodge. God I hate this place! There's an 18 years old young man who begs us to help him out of there. So Ruach tries to protect the both of us. Suddenly we hear a familiar voice. Filian shouts into the bar "Guards! The guards are coming!" Someone throws a tankard at Filian. That angers Fiona who strides in and tries to locate who it was, but can't find that person. Caerian tries to stop Fiona from getting into the bar and at that moment they see us standing at the stairs. Suddenly someone else yells "Guards! Guards!" and that has a very different effect than Filian's shouting: people start rushing out of the tavern while the guards are commanding them to stop.

The guards command us to get down while they command Fiona and the others to go away, they shouldn't be watching a tavern brawl. Fiona tries to talk to them and tell them that we had absolutely nothing to do with this whole mess, we were just trying to get rooms from this place. The guards just insist we were part of the fight since we were inside, so they need to arrest us. Inside the people who were actually participating in the fight, stand with their head low. They seem to know something we don't yet know. The huge man claims I kicked him on his groin, I lose my temper and say "You are such a coward and a liar! You hit me with no good reason, I never kicked you! This is the way you folks welcome new people to your town?" In my mind I add "Now I do hope that I had kicked you hard enough to make sure you will never breed!" Ruach tries to tell the guards we were hired by the Duke of Seol, but obviously the guards are completely unable to see reason in anything. They just want to arrest people. At that point I'm furious and I tell them I'm a Varigal and I will make sure a word of this will spread around. They don't seem to care about that either, surprise surprise, so they just take us to cages with five people in each.

Night in a Cage

The young man is locked in a same cage with me and Ruach, so we start talking. He's in the army and has tried to leave the town, but they always got him back. And as a bonus he receive 20 whip slashes each time they caught him. So all he wants is to leave, but he doesn't know how to do that. Suddenly he says he knows how to get out of these cages and that he'd show us if only we'd take him with us. Ruach talks to the two other prisoners while I just lean on the bars and try to be quiet. Filian arrives and we tell him about our plan to escape in the middle of the night and help the young man to get out of this nasty place. Têrkhen should be named again into Wasteland, or something more suitable for a place like this. So Filian agrees to meet us at the peculiar rock formation that looks like a face. For the first time since we arrived in this hellhole I feel hopeful: I'm getting out of her and soon too. At that point the young man says his name is Radmilo.

In the meanwhile Caerian talks to a guard about leaving the army and he says it's not possible, one signs-up for at least for two years. He says you couldn't leave if there was a war, so if you sign-up for the army, you will do your time. A bit later Filian fills Fiona and Caerian in with our escape plan. Fiona just says they shouldn't as they will be released in the morning. Fiona marches to us and informs us that we're not leaving tonight. She gives us an order to stay put and leaves. An order? I can't believe that facny pants of a woman! I have no intention to stay in this cage for the night and I let her back know that. Fiona marches straight to a guard and let's him know that Radmilo is planning an escape and that me and Ruach asked her to let the guards know. And then two guards come to fetch Radmilo away, not giving us any explanations. Fiona comes to us and insists it had to be done, it would've been lot more than just one night if we would've gotten caught.

Next morning we're let out and Fiona is there to greet us. I walk right past her like she wouldn't even be there. She says it was for our own good, I don't say a thing to her. So we leave this hell on earth in silent and travel on a mountainous road for a few days. We're riding toward Frendian. Me and Fiona are not in the best of terms. Ruach tries to talk to me, saying that maybe Fiona did us a favour after all. Finally I give in tell Fiona I'm not that angry anymore. She just thinks I've been childish, but is happy that we're friends again. I wouldn't go that far, I have zero trust for that woman right now, but I'm tired of being angry for now.

Frendian - Heaven on Earth, Or Is It?

As we arrive, we see a valley with no fences and anything that even remotely looks military. We ride in the valley and even the colours look different, they are somehow brighter. There's sun and a bright blue sky after all the grey and rainy weather we've witnessed so far. As we ride further, there's a huge stone on our left. As soon as we past it, everything feels different. Caerian points out there was something unnatural on either what we were experiencing earlier of what we're experiencing now. He also says this stone was created by a Demorthen.

We approach a farm that is the first inhabitet place we see here. There's a young woman with a baby and I try to ask if she's seen Aeoda MacIsenor. Caerian describes the escort of hers and she instantly recognises that and says she did see them last Autumn. The party went to the castle and Countess Adnae MacMarzin would know more. So we thank her and ride to the castle, arriving in the early evening. As we arrive, we can see that the castle is intended to be defendable, at least. Filian talks to the guard and tells him this place is much friendlier than some other places we've been to. When Filian says we come from Seol, the guards says there has been visitors from Seol before, the daughter of the Duke of Seol. He says we should talk to the Countess about that. So we talk to the chamberlain and he says he will ask the Countess if she can talk to us. The servants escort us deeper into the castle while the stable boys look after our caernides.

After a little wait the chamberlain escorts us to a room with a frail, young, blond woman with a distant look, like she would be looking somewhere far far away from here. Fiona introduces us all and says we're in a quest of finding Aeoda MacIsenor. The Countess starts saying something but her voice trails of like wouldn't be listening. Suddenly she says that she think Aeoda wanted to go to Ard-Monach and then back to Seol. The countess is acting somewhat weird and distracted, like only half of her would be present. Filian tries to analyze her, but from a scientific point of view she's just a little weird. Caerian uses his knowledge of Demorthen Mysteries, but he gets nothing either. So Ruach tries common sense and asks the Countess if something is troubling her. She says she's just thinking about all the beautiful things she saw in the forest. She says it hasn't been always like this, Alawn made it possible. Alawn was their Demorthen and he activated the stone circle, no Feondas can access the valley anymore. She continues telling us that the Demorthen was killed, completely dismembered and his body was found by a hunter called Konog. Suddenly she changes the subject and says she doesn't have any rooms prepared for visitors and that we ould stay at Golden Hearth. We thank the Countess and are happy to get out and get to the Inn.

At Golden Hearth

Golden Hearth is a two story building and looks very nice. The word that comes to our mind is playful, although we fully understand that is not a word to be used when describing a building. As we get in we see it's not luxurious, but obviously someone has put a lot of time and money on this Inn. Filian sees a man and a woman in black leather and they both carry a Magientist symbols on their sleeves. Filian talks to the owner. The owner introduces himself as Joel and let's us know he's owned this place for all his life. He asks where we are from and who we are, Caerian does some small talk him. The magientist look at us curiously, so Filian goes talking to them. They start insulting Filian, but he just keeps talking to them, pretending not to understand he was just insulted. He distracts the magientists as the rest of us talk to the owner, we don't want them to hear what we talk about. The man start mocking Filian seriously and asking about engineering. As Filian starts telling him about engineering, he says in a very mocking tone "Please go on, I'm completely fascinated" and such.

In the meanwhile, we ask Joel about Aeoda's stay, but he doesn't really remember anything. He does remember the day she left though, she traveled East, to go to Ard-Monach. He then proceeds into talking about the stone circle and he tells us there's a woman called Servana, who has been studying the stone circle for a while now. He tells the Magientists that are insulting Filian, are Jacut and Nolwenn, but there's also Maden and Joren, so five Magientists altogether. So we get two rooms like usually. The rooms are very clean and very comfortable, but a little crammed with a lot of things on the wall. Or everywhere, Joel seems to be collecting a lot of things.

Filian is planning on breaking and entering into one of the Magientists' room when there's suddenly a knock on the men's room door. It's Joel, who wants to know if everything is alright with our rooms. Ruach asks him how the Magientists are living, if they have one or more rooms. Joel answers and then says that we all should see the sunset, it's absolutely magnificent. So we all go to see the sunset, since the men do fetch me and Fiona. Ruach and Filian notice that Nolwen seem to be very nervous and also a little frightened.

After the sunset Caerian goes to the kitchen to ask if there will be porridge for breakfast. While getting back from the kitchen, he sees a woman in the common room and goes talking to her. She says she's Servana. Caerian introduces himself and lets her know he's a Demorthen. Servana gets really excited and asks about the sensations she's had when studying the stones. She says that if she pressed her ear on the stone, there's a heartbeat. They agree to go study the stones together the next morning. Servana says she's been studying the stones for two months now and they are all different. For example the heart rate is different to each and some of them have a coppery taste while others don't. They agree to meet in the common room at sunrise and then Servan leaves. Caerian gets a feeling of a little girl leaving. After that Caerian gets back to his room only to see the others have already gone to bed. Long day behind us and sleep has never felt better.

Learning Many New Things

Next morning Servana is already almost done with her breakfast when we get down. Caerian orders some porridge and tries to eat while Servana keeps talking. She keeps going on and on about everything. She had learned at the University that there hasn't been any Feonda attacks in 30 years and she read a report about the stones having been activated and that is why she's here. Suddenly Filian remembers Servana's last name Lionair is the same last name as Evartzeg's. As Caerian and Servana leave, Nolwen and Jacut walk down, in travel clothing. Servan greets them, but she's clearly not her happy little self around these two. As soon as they're out of ear shot, she says she traveled her with Nolwen and she doesn't like the kind of work they do. When Carian ask specifics, she just says the work for the Ashen Yards. Servana says she knows she's not suppose to talk about it, but they do some research there, it' a research facility. Servana also thinks their methods are at the very least questionable, she uses Magience for science. She doesn't know what they're doing there exactly, but it can't be good. She continues explaining her budget is very low as she's here on her own account, no-one's paying her.

As Filian walks back in the common room he overhears Nolwen saying "The research in Garath might be more important than we initially thought. I wonder if the children have already been examined..." Jacut says "We'll know that once we get back." We see them leaving and for some reason the guys ask me and Fiona to follow them. So we do, even though it's not very clear why we're doing that. Maybe they just wanted us to patch things up better between us? It turns out to be very boring and after a while we don't have much to say to each other either. We start feeling tired and Fiona is not paying much attention. Suddenly she notices she's not riding next to Catríona, but Nolwen. After that we are a bit more alert and follow them until they turn to East. At that point we turn back with no new knowledge, and get back to the Golden Hearth.

In the meanwhile, Ruach goes to talk to a room maid. He asks her where the female Magientists' rooms are and slips some coins to her hand. She says first floor and third door and Ruach give sher some more coins. Ruach changes into different clothing and hides his face. Then he walks to that door and picks the lock, slipping in the room quietly. Inside he sees two beds, moved as far away from each other as possible. Lot of clothes lying around and lot of notes. He goes through Servana's notes quickly. Then he searches through Nolwen's notes. There's also a letter in her notes. The content is something like "Make sure Alban is waiting before doing some ritual, until Jorvan and Evarzeg arrives Dearg." Ruach spends some time memorizing the letter and then leaves the room.

Konog's Story

Caerian and Filian are following Servana, who keeps talking constantly. They want to talk to Konog before going to the forest, so they head toward his place. As they arrive, there's a man sitting outside, working on arrows. Caerian hails from the distance, he waves back and drinks deeply from a stone jar. As they get closer, Caerian explains Joel had given them instructions on how to get here. When they see the man it's clear he's a drunkard. Konog asks for something to drink and Caerian says he's got a mushroom vodka recipe. Caerian starts asking about Alawn, but before he finishes the sentence, Konog tosses a stone at him yelling he doesn't want to remember that, it was so awful. Caerian tries to tell him he might be able to help him. Konog doesn't believe him, so Caerian takes Filian's pocket bottle and asks Konog to taste it and tell him if he still thinks Caerian couldn't help him. "It's good stuff" Konog says after having tasted Filian's whiskey. "You can talk if I get the bottle" he then says. "Talk first, then bottle" replies Caerian and gets a hasty reply "No no no no, bottle first, then talk!". Must be the weirdest bargaining ever. The Caerian has enough and puts Konog into trance.

And then Caerian starts asking questions and Konog answers everything. Konog says Alawn always kept things to himself, he wouldn't have told anything to anyone. Konog had discovered Alawn's body in Eastern forest, outside of the protective circle. It was a massacre, Alawn was completely dismembered! He has never before seen a body that was shred into such pieces. "I assume it was the beast" says Caerian and then asks about the marks. Konog says "Dunno, was too busy throwing up..." Konog says he saw a young woman in the forest, twice. He never saw her face, but she was naked and her hair was blonde. The hair was not short, but shorter length. First time Konog saw her after Aeoda and her escort had left. She ran away when Konog tried talking to her and getting closer to her. Second time he saw her shortly after a group of Magientists came to town, never saw her after they had left. After the first time he saw her, he told about her to Alawn. Alawn had said she has to be saved. Two days later Alawn was dead.

After Caerian is satisfied with what Konog had told him, he says "When you will wake up, you drink the whiskey, and do not remember the incident of finding Alawn's body anymore. The whiskey is going to be very good, best whiskey you've ever had, and no drink will ever compare to that. So you will stop drinking and start hunting again, like you used to do". Then Caerian snaps his fingers and Konog wakes from the trance and drinks all the whiskey from Filian's pocket bottle.
