I would like to apologize for the delay in nominating our newest Video Game Geek of the Week. Finding a nominee was somewhat difficult but I finally found someone who accepted the offer. Let me introduce Herman Hum to the wider Video Game Geek community!

Quote:
I have been a computer wargame fan since they first came out in the 1980s with games like North Atlantic '86 and B-1 Bomber. Many a night has turned to dawn as we played them until the cassette tape was worn out! My first game was naval and the genre remains special. I have tried Falcon 3 and other flight games, but never liked playing them on a PC (it might be different if I had a TrackIR system.) When Harpoon came out in 1989, I played every battleset (series of scenarios) while hungrily awaiting the release of the next. At that time, the company released scenario compilations every year or so in a package called a battleset. Twenty-five years later, the game remains one of my favourites.

I have stuck with PC games since human opponents are so hard to find. My hand-eye coordination is terrible, so I avoid FPS games and focus on strategy titles that do not force me to act under time pressure. I have played a little of everything, but will go out of my way for games with user-friendly interfaces. There are lots of good game ideas out there, but many fail in their delivery.

- What is the worst game you ever played (and why)?

Modern Naval Operations. It tries to be a game, but the user interface is so awkward and clunky that the experience is more a painful chore than a pleasure. The user must constantly fight his way through the interface to find units and issue orders. The micro-management is pure hell. After every MNO session, I need to visit my physiotherapist for the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome the game induces. I have had too many 3hr+ sessions explode in a CTD from one of the memory leaks and no way to recover from them. The frustration is palpable. The pettiness of the developers is the icing on the cake.

- What is your favorite video game-related memory?

My favourite game-related memory is when I was asked by the Colombian Navy to help them with learning how to play Harpoon. They found me over the internet due to my community support activities and eventually invited me to visit and share my experiences with their Naval Academy. Best of all, this was during the World Cup 2010! I got to watch football with some fine fans as well as talk about the game.

- How long was your longest single VG-playing-session ever (and what game(s))?

The longest battle I had in Harpoon lasted over 13 months. My opponent was often too busy to play, so we only met for battle every 6 weeks or so. We would save it and continue. The battle was epic and recorded for the benefit of others: Ingress [MP] (USSR) a.k.a "The Dance of the Vampires" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI1Tj9VCD5c ]

When Harpoon multi-player was released, I played 9 hours, slept for 8, and came back to play another nine. That would be my longest 'single' session.

- What is your current platform of choice?

PC

- What are you playing now, and what will you be playing next?

War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition. Currently awaiting the final patch for FlashPoint Campaigns: Red Storm.

- Do you use cheat codes?

Never

- What is your favorite contribution (of yours or of another user) to VGG (provide a link, if possible)?

This site provides support for all Harpoon players as well as other games.

Congrats Herman. Here are some questions.

1. What do you think about the statement that video games are "the pre-eminent art form of the 21st century"?
2. What have been your experiences, if any, with Massively Multiplayer Online games?
3. Did you ever play any Koei naval games?

My thanks to Brandon for the kindness of his nomination. I'm glad to meet all of you.

1. I think that games are definitely an expressive art form. I'm just not sure I would call them 'pre-eminent' when there are so many other media such as music and videos.

2. Unfortunately, I have never played any MMO games whatsoever.

3. I have never owned a console so, consequently, never played any Koei games. It's just as well, since my reflexes are horrible.

They had the game, but did not know how to do certain things and couldn't find anyone who could help. Finally, they asked enough people that someone told them, "If you want to know about Harpoon, ask Herman Hum."

They got in contact with me and invited me down for a couple of visits. I volunteered a few weeks of my life to helping them. Since then, I think they have gone in another direction.

Here are my usual questions:

A Sunrise or sunset?

Both. Sunrise atop Mt. Sinai. Sunset on a Thai beach.

B Ocean or lake?

Lake, because I can drink from it.

C What's the farthest place you've ever traveled to?

Been around the world from Tuktoyaktuk to Tierra del Fuego.

D If money (or nothing else for that matter) would be no object, where would you travel to?

International Space Station

E If you could go back in time and meet any one person you'd like to, who'd you meet and why?

The person who first wore a baseball cap backwards so that I could kick his ass.

F Your favourite pizza toppings?

See next answer.

G Any pets?

Not any more. They make great toppings.

H What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?

The War that Never Was, by Michael Palmer. It's about a hypothetical WWIII in 1985 and I enjoyed it very much.

I What was the last film you saw? Would you recommend it?

Draft Day with Kevin Costner. Not a bad flick. Best he's done in awhile.

J Which video game are you going to play to celebrate being the VGGotW?

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm. The final patch just came out.

Enjoy your week

And you, too.

1) Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Trek because they did more with story-telling and imagination and were less reliant upon SFX.

2) Two door or four door?

Four-door. There's more room in the back seat.

3) CFL or incandescent?

Definitely the Canadian Football League.

4) Cruel or unusual?

I'm a masochist. I like them both.

5) Real or imaginary?

Imaginary. This isn't happening.
