Fiona and the party meet at the MacLeur household. Caerian asks them to sit down. Once he's closed the door to the room, he begins by saying he's made a grave error that has put them all in danger. He discloses his discussion with Turian and his fears that Turian may be behind the riots. Furthermore, he fears that Turian is a morcail. Because of Turian's power, both as a Demorthen and as the Duke's righthand man, they must be very careful in how they proceed. Caerian says he was approached by Dalreg Mac Dorgh at the engagement party, but he dismissed the man's suspicions at the time. He wants to track him down and see what, if anything, he knows. Also, he wants to send a varigal to the Demorthen High Council to share his suspicions. Thinking back on Dalreg Mac Dorgh, Filian remembers that it was unusual for him to have come to the party; he rarely visits town.

Just as they're finishing up their discussion, there's a knock on the door. Caerian opens it to reveal a servant sent to summon them to the castle for a meeting with Turian. There is a discussion about whether or not they should go, as Caerian suspects they are being summoned to the castle in order to frame them for instigating the riot. Given Turian's political power, they feel they have no choice but to attend the meeting. Caerian suggests they inform someone that their presence has been requested by Turian in order to protect themselves, and they settle on inviting Sir Harold to the meeting. As a Hilderin Knight, he is not necessarily beholden to the Duke or to Seol. However, they are supposed to report immediately and don't have time to round up the reinforcements.

It's dark by the time they arrive. The group is shown into a waiting room and told to wait until Turian is ready to see them. When the door opens, Lady Aoda leaves the room. She seems puzzled by their presence, so they inform her that they were summoned by Turian. She finds it odd but is sure he has reasons for it. They are called inside and sit down.

Turian asks if Caerian has been investigating the riot. Caerian admits that he has and has tells him they've learned that most of the rioters were commoners that had learned about the child's death, which caused them to focus their anger on the magientist school. Catriona adds that someone may have started a rumor. He asks if they've learned the source of the rumors, and they claim they haven't. Turian says he questioned a potter named Blythe from outside of Seol, and he understands that the party had brought him to the castle. Caerian emphasizes that they learned nothing from him. Turian tells them that he is impressed by the work the party performed for Lady Aoda, and he would like them to investigate the cause of this riot for him. He also hands over a letter expressing that the party is working on his behalf so that if anyone questions them, the letter should stop them from asking questions. He then asks Caerian to wait after he's dismissed the others.

Turian confesses to Caerian that he fears a morcail may have been involved. He's sent notice to the High Counil already. The group should be very cautious in their investigation in order to avoid drawing attention from the morcail. Filian tries to overhear the conversation, but he is thwarted by the thick leather on the door.

Back at the MacLeur household, Caerian writes down the conversation he had with Turian. He also writes his concerns that Turian seems more knowledgable about the situation and the party's workings that he should be. Caerian is concerned that Turian has a spy listening to their conversations. He's convinced Turian is lying about having sent a message to the High Council, so another messenger should be sent -- quietly. Caerian also points out that he told the Duke that no one was to have access to Blythe and had even implied Turian's involvement. Catriona is sent to the Frozen Waterfall, which is where the varigals typically hang out, to see if anyone was hired by Turian, the Duke, or anyone at the castle.

The Frozen Waterfall is rather busy tonight. She makes her way over to the tables reserved for varigals. The group has heard a rumor that the castle had sent a message, but they can't confirm it or know the details. The group then shares a laugh at the young varigal's expense, who has spent another day without being hired. Catriona feels bad for him, and so she buys him a beer and offers him some advice. She tries to persuade him to give her whatever information he has, and he's willing to -- but only if she tells him what he knows. She tries to distract him by offering to hire him to deliver a note to her mother. However, after he agrees to do the work, he doesn't seem to have any interesting information to share with her. The other varigals are amused Catriona hired the younger varigal; apparently, he's known to get lost easily. Catriona notices the bartender suddenly, and she realizes the bartender has also been here all day long. He tells her there have been a couple of people in today from the castle, including a demorthen! The demorthen hired was named Ciaran, and he is one of the older, more reliable ones.

Catriona, now slightly drunk, makes her way back to the MacLeur household, where she tells the party of her findings. The party begins to compose their own note to the High Council. The note reads: "Following investigations into a riot in Seol, it was discovered that a potter had had his mind influenced by magic. We suspect that this was caused by a Morcail and request the High Council to act immediately in Seol's defence. Please note that the Morcail may send another note with contrary or different information - please be careful of any information you receive in this regard. The party also added a code to the bottom of the note that to prove that they were the ones who wrote the note." As an additional piece of proof, Filian places a second sheet of paper next to the first and draws a design over the pair as a sort of watermark. With the note completed, the group retires for the night with the plan to hand it over to the varigal for delivery in the morning.

Catriona will hand off the note to a varigal she knows the group can rely on. Caerian shadows her to make sure nothing happens to her and casts a charm on her to help her move more stealthily. At the Frozen Waterfall, she hands her note to the younger varigal and pays him to deliver it. He's so happy that he makes quite a fuss and draws a lot of attention. Once he's gone, Catriona sits down with one of the older and more reliable varigals to ask him to deliver the letter. It will take between 4-6 months for him to make the trip and come back to report to the party he's made the delivery. She alerts him that this may be dangerous and that he may be followed, and he, in turn, promises to be careful. Once he's gone, she heads back to the MacLeur household, and the party begins making travel preparations.

I guess that Ciaran was not the demorthen's name but rather the name of the varigal (hired by the nameless demorthen). (Hm, is it already necroing a post after two months?)
