The good news is that I have next week off work for vacation.

The bad news is that I mentioned to my wife my fingers were getting stuck. She immediately tells me that is a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome (could also be something called Trigger Finger). Which means I ought not be spending this week hardcore into video games like I was planning and probably shouldn't be typing or mouse clicking or using my phone either.

So I will have to make an appointment with medical provider. Hopefully I can go straight to an occupational therapist or other specialist rather than having to make an appointment with a general practitioner first and waste that time and money.

I guess I will be binge watching tv and reading this week.

I'm starting The Wire.

Best of luck. Hopefully a little R&R is all you'll require.

As someone who works all day on a PC, I've had too many times where I've ended up with numbness in my hand at the end of the day. This is why I prefer using a controller ... though it's not a cure all. Any game that requires me to constantly depress a button, like in a racing game, can cause me cramping.

FYI - My mother got surgery for carpal tunnel but her hands were never the same. Try to do what you can to avoid it.

You should do some research into CTS friendly interactive devises. You'll have a limited selection of games since your response times will change, but can still game.

Not sure what the worse news is, the CPS or the fact you're about to watch The Wire.

Seriously, though, I hope you heal super fast and recover fully. But be sure of the diagnosis before trying any therapy that could hurt you if the diagnosis is wrong.

(but semi-seriously, The Wire has got to be the most boring critically acclaimed show ever)

When does it get boring? I'm four episodes in and enjoying it quite a bit so far.

I love that the police don't have an unlimited budget for devices and manpower and testing like in most tv shows. But mostly I love how complex the characters are and how the police and criminal enterprise have to cope with people in their organization with different agendas and priorities and competencies.

I liked The Wire a lot, though I'm not sure I ever liked later seasons nearly as much as I liked the first. Glad to hear you are enjoying it!

I was bored from start to mid-season 1, which is where I quit. I do seem to have peculiar tastes, though: I'm probably the only person in the world who *hated* Breaking Bad, even though I watched all of it.

BB was the most recent series I watched and enjoyed that one.

Doctor immediately went to trigger finger. Didn't even mention carpal tunnel. Not sure if one is a more serious diagnosis or not but he was all in on trigger finger.

Gave me a splint. Said to try to let finger rest as much as I could. He didn't put me on light duty or anything. Said to wear the splint at night. I try to wear it in evenings too just to help. I have been trying to reduce computer and video game and phone time. But it's not easy for me. I am pretty attached to electronics.

I've had the splint a couple days now (saw doctor Tuesday, so that's three nights?) I feel like the symptoms were already improving after trying to rest it all last week but they are improving dramatically now with the splint (and continued rest). There were some points last week where I had to use my other hand to get my finger to unlock and now it's more like a hesitation than a lock.

Said if splint doesn't work will go to cortisone and if that doesn't work surgery is the next step. Said it should be two-three weeks to get better. I've already decided I will slow that schedule down considerably. If what I'm doing now hasn't cleared it up in three weeks I will go to 24 hour a day wearing splint and try to get on light duty or use sick leave. I'm not sure how all that will work out and maybe the doctor won't go along with that. I'm sure I'd need a doctor note to get light duty. But I'm not even crazy about getting a cortisone shot. I've heard that works for a short time and then problems come back.

I'm going in for a consult on the 31st. Turns out I should have gotten back to them sooner. But I was not informed this was time critical.

I guess we will be discussing either cortisone shot or surgery.

Neither are very appealing. Apparently the cortisone shot is quite painful and I don't like surgery much.

It's still sore. Symptoms are weird because they change so much, and wax and wane. Now it has gotten swollen.

Cortisone shots will wear off over time, but you can get a new one every 6 months. I'd still take them over surgery unless it becomes unbearable.

I got the shot today.

From what the Doctor told me it is possible the cortisone shot will wear off and the trigger finger will return.

It is also possible (about 70% of cases) where the cortisone reduces the inflammation and the trigger finger does not return.

I had heard the shot was quite painful. I did not experience that. Seemed like a typical shot to me, though it was uncomfortable when the fluid was released.

Will see how it works. Doctor told me in two months I would be able to follow up with either surgery or another shot if the symptoms hadn't cleared.

Swelling is visibly reduced in finger. It is also much less sore and less sensitive to getting bumped.

Doctor said pain would go away before the locking and that is happening for me.

I'm still wearing the splint to try and ease tension and hopefully make the shot more effective.
