Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Visual Novel

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

I found Learn Japanese To Survive! Katakana War to be visual novel, while Hiragana Wars was RPG. I guess both are Visual novels in their own ways. And Kanji wars seem to be even more developed. I haven`t gotten around to play it yet.

It`s educational as well as entertaining. I love it! And I learn Japanese along the way!

Mmm... I enjoy them!

So far two of the games I own are called visual novels:

Sorcery! which is a CYOA novel redo as an app and Long Live The Queen. I love both of them. In fact, Sorcery! 2 is on my hardcore list of games to beat for this year!

Apparently another alien genre to me. Haven't played any of the games listed, and there are some I've never heard of.

I never expected to enjoy this genre, but I was recommended Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, and I was absolutely blown away. I've always been an avid reader, and as far as fiction goes, I tend to gravitate towards the "thriller" genre. VLR plays out like an epic, sci fi thriller. That actually led me to play Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc afterwards, which was equally great. I loved the entire Danganronpa series. I still need to try out a Phoenix Wright game as well as play 999 as it is the first game in the Zero Escape series.

It's by no means a genre for everyone, but I think it's worth checking out for those that love great (and sometimes "out there") stories and don't mind minimal gameplay in an experience.

Long Live the Queen was good. Other than that I haven't really played any of these.
