Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Racing

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

Mario Kart 8
Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart Wii
Burnout 3: Takedown
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
Mario Kart 7
Gran Turismo 5
Forza Motorsport 3

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

I think there are two different subsections here: Arcade racing and simulation racing. These should not be considered side by side in the same list. I just would not compare a Mario Cart game to Gran Turismo game because they both have vehicles in a race.

On the arcade racing side, I would think Outrun would rank high.

I wouldn't have expected to like a racing game, but I had a lot of fun with Mario Kart DS. Of course, such wacky racing games should probably be separated from the serious ones.

Mario Kart 7 is a great game in all aspects. I had only played a few minutes of Mario Kart before I got the game (which was included with my 2DS), and I have sunk hours and hours and hours into MK7. Fantastic game!

@Patrick, I also am a huge fan of OutRun, dating back to the arcades as a kid and then on the Master System. I'll break it out every once and while and just cruise! (Personally speaking, I consider the game to be a "Driving" game rather than a "Racing" game but that is splitting hairs!)

That's a good point that some of the games may be a driving game more than a racing game. A game may have a racing element, but the core experience is the drive, whether in handling the vehicle or reaching and seeing destinations. I suppose those would fall under simulations instead. I like my racing to be simulations more so than arcade, which seem to be the dominate racers listed.

Wow, a lot of Mario karts in the top 10, here.

My favorite racing game is probably the current number 11 in 'Racing', Burnout Paradise, or to be more specific, Burnout Paradise: Remastered, since it is a straight upgrade from the original 'Ultimate Box' version for PC.

Redout is another one I am really enjoying right now. It's a great modern high-speed racing game in similar vein to Wipeout, Star Wars Podracer, and F-Zero. It's really good.

The Mario Kart games are all good fun, though.

I have played Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on PS2. Also When my parents had a computer, there was a game where I raced on different tracks with motorbikes. Those were pretty fun! My sister and I tried to beat each other`s scores.

Does Pacman count as racing? I had a Pacman game for my PS2. Instead of the grid system he ran through, there were sceneries with yellow dots to eat, and tasks to finish.
