Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Pinball

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

Pinball FX 2
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
Pinball Fantasies
Pinball Arcade
Pinball Dreams
Metroid Prime Pinball
Marvel Pinball
Pinball Illusions
Kirby's Pinball Land
Pinball FX3

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

I never liked pinball, but I've played it--both the mechanical and electronic kinds. The layouts are impressive, and the game can be kind of addictive. But I like to stay away from addictive games and play interesting ones instead.

I personally really like pinball video games. I have been a pinball fan since I was a little kid, but having a real pinball machine is difficult, so I have always had a soft spot for video versions. One of my favorites is the old school Microsoft Pinball Arcade, which includes Haunted House, a table I vividly remembering playing as a little kid on vacation at an arcade at Walt Disney World.

I have played Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies in collected form on GBA under the title Pinball Challenge Deluxe, and they are fantastic games. Great physics, colorful and fun tables, and crisp graphics. Just wonderful all around. If you can find this game, pick it up!

I think Metroid Prime pinball should be at the top, but I'm totally biased.

I played a little bit of real pinball when I was a student but other than a vague attempt at playing a Pinball game on my Amiga, I did not discover a love of pinball games until Pinball FX2 was included in a humble bundle... Man that game is incredible! It has since been fired by Pinball FX3, but thankfully all the tables I had bought for FX2 were transferred over to FX3!!!

I've played a few pinball games in the past, and they are kind of fun, but they always felt like a timewaster type of game to me.
