Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Other

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition
Divinity II: Ego Draconis
Can't Stop
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Nightfall
Little Inferno
Uplink
Samorost 2
Passage
QIX

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

"Other"--now there's a genre for you! I've played Can't Stop, but I don't even recognize the other titles on the list.

Other isn't really a genre, though. It's just a catch-all for things that didn't fit elsewhere.

Quote:
When a game is hard to classify or does not fit within any of the other genres, add it here.

While this is an option it is highly recommended that you do not use it. This is to prevent 'other' from becoming a dumping ground by users who can't be bothered to find a genre that fits a game. If you do opt to use this 'genre' don't be surprised if you get contacted by an admin.

Why does Divinity II: Ego Draconis even need to be classified as other when it has 2 other categories? I just edited Can't Stop - should be with Classic games.

I feel like some of this is lazy data entry, but some of it is unique games that don't fit a current category because there are so few games of that type (like what is Mario Paint? should there be a creative category?).

I agree. Samorost 2 should be Adventure and Puzzle, like the other two games in the series, which have those genres. (And just edited it)

Some games do defy easy labeling, and that should be what Other is about - when they really don't fit any other categories or when a category has not yet been created for them.

This makes me think that there should be a project to re-categorize all the games in the Other category.

Also, I love QIX. It's an Arcade game. I used to play a ton of it at the arcade.

I kinda like the Other genre. Like a deck of cards, 52 plus a joker. "Other" is the joker of the VGG genres.

The Other genre seems ripe for correction. Might be a good idea for a goal.

Yeah. It seems that every game in 'Other' that also has another genre really needs to be corrected.
