Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads. And a POLL.

This thread's genre: Life Simulation

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

The Sims 3
The Sims 2
Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Viva Piñata
The Sims
Harvest Moon 64
Jet Set Radio Future
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Rebuild

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

Sims clearly deserves the top spot. I'm glad to see that the numerous expansions for Sims are not cluttering the list.

I did not consider Viva Pinata a life simulation, but I get it and it is a fantastic game.

Not sure Animal crossing deserves as high a praise.

If Viva Pinata and Animal crossing are life simulations, then I would have expected to see Zoo Tycoon here, too.

I spent a ton of time and had a ton of fun with Sims (1,2, & 3), but I have too much of a backlog to want to really go back to it anymore. I don't think I've really played any other series in the genre (or have a desire to).

Glad to see the Sims gets a mention in this part. Surprised to see all 3 Sims games get a mention!

Love the Sims games, they allowed me to create Faith's story (The Sims 3 (Console)), the unfinished saga of Amy and Kelly (The Sims 2 (Console)), and a house with no doors, no windows, just a bunch of people burning (The Sims).

Never played Animal Crossing, probably doesn't deserve such high praise, but it does strike me as being a life simulation, no quarrels there. What I'm questioning is Jet Set Radio Future. A life simulation? It's a free roam arcadey action game about inline skating, graffiti, rival gangs, accomplishing tasks, and dealing with law enforcement. If that's a life simulation, then what about Tony Hawk's Underground? Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? How about Marc Eckō's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure while you're at it?

If that last part came across as harsh, I didn't mean to be.

I played The Sims for a wile and it was interesting but not enough to keep me playing it.

Rebuild? Really? I think it more as a strategy game. And if Harvest Moon is listed does Stardew Valley fit? (I am currently playing and enjoying it.)
