Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Flight Simulator

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

Star Wars: TIE Fighter
Star Wars: X-Wing
Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi
FreeSpace 2
Elite
Wing Commander (1990)
Wing Commander: Privateer
Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter
Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

Played and loved all these games. Order seems about right.

However, it seems skewed towards the role play aspect and no much towards the simulation.

Microsoft flight, X flight, Top Flight and other are probably better flight simulators.

Several combat flight simulators were also tops in their class, such as IL-Sturmovik and the combat flight simulator series. I found these to be a better simulator, but not as good a game as those that currently top this list.

I used to love Red Baron (1990) and the Aces games. Don't play them anymore, though.

Though I loved Wing Commander, I always feel weird when calling a game where you pilot a spaceship in a distant future (or long long ago, in a galaxy far away) a simulator, sinbc you "simulate' something that doesn't exist. Ah well,...

For me personally, I like a videogame flightsim to be more complex (more options and controls) than a shooter, but I never can find the time or energy to fully learn and appreciate a 'real' flightsim, where you basically learn to fly "the real thing" - looking at you, Digital Combat Simulator!

So my personal top entails:
ACE Air Combat Emulator - unrated on VGG. Played this to death on the C-64
Strike Fighters 2: Europe - just a notch more complicated than ACE. Awesome dynamic campaing and still runs, on Win10
IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters - a lot of options to dumb it down to any desired level, from full arcade till hardcore sim

There are a lot of games in this genre that I like. And even more I would've probably loved to play, but never got around to doing them due to hardware or time constraints.

I like flight sims, though they often take a similar amount of commitment to learn and enjoy as 4x strategy games. The X-Wing games are great classic Star Wars games and very immersive. FreeSpace 2 is one of the best space flight sims there is.
